Well, I read the other 2 reviews, if they are giving out pets to unemployed persons, that's questionable. I wanted a chihuahua and it was taken off their photos, that was because he was being saved for me! But I remember being worried. My little Harley is doing great, they made sure my other Chi's were up to date on shots and they all met to check compatibility. The adoption fee for the Chihuahua was quite steep, ~$200. That alone should prevent someone without $$ from adopting lightly. But cats are cheaper, and for 'farm' cats, even cheaper. I thought everyone was super nice, super helpful, and the pets were clean, and the shelter smelled and appeared very clean. What more do you want? Harley had been neutered while there. As an RN, I was able to remove the sutures myself. No one is perfect, instead of leaving ONE * star, talk to them. Maybe leave 3 stars, it'd be more realistic. They are not bad at all! I adopted Bentley a LhasaApso August 2020 and he is everything I wanted as a pet and friend. I drove over 100 miles to get him. They held him until I could get there. Bentley had been well cared for and showed it. The Lakeshore Human Society was very professional and organized. They told me his history and why he was given up. I am his third owner. I adopted my little furbaby from Lakeshore Humane Society in October, and I couldn't be happier. He was happy and healthy, very friendly, and I could tell they had treated him with love. All of the other animals looked very happy as well. They had all of the necessary paperwork and full medical records for me of all of his vaccinations, neuter date, and microchip information. They were patient with me as I filled out my adoption paperwork, answered any questions I had, and were very personable. I'm planning to adopt another cat so my little buddy can have a friend when I have to be at work. It's a fantastic animal shelter and I wholeheartedly recommend them as an adoption facility. They are a no kill center and really love the animals they care for. We adopted two adult cats and they are a great fit for our family. We couldn't ask for better-behaved animals. They frequently run "kitty adpotion specials" because of the large amount of cats they recieve. If you are looking to adopt please consider a shelter pet and don't overlook the adults. Most of them were just given up because the owners simply could not afford them or like ours they did not feel they had enough time for them anymore. read more

I have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for the folks who work here. They put their hearts and souls into the care of homeless and unwanted animals. Knowing full well that no one can save them all. This is a well kept and managed facility. Pets for adoption are health checked, vaccinated, neutered, and micro-chipped. After three Siamese cats in my life, the last one dying at 17, it took me a few years to be ready to have new furry friends. I got Rasta (shelter name Velcro) after he gave me a head butt through the cage. His cage partner Isis (shelter name Beverly) gave my wife a beseeching silent meow. That's all it took, we have two lovely tabbies (yes, their personalities are way different than Siamese). Because I am a senior citizen, the adoption fees were half price. It's nice to get perks when you're old. I stop by this place periodically and give them a twenty dollar bill. You should, too. They need all the help they can get for a truly noble cause. Or, better yet, take home a new fur friend. read more

I am very disappointed in this non-profit organization. Their adoption procedure is unbelievably unorganized and unacceptable. Lakeshore Human Society received a dog that they were not supposed to receive. They were in contact with the breeder of the dog which was supposed to get it back if the owner did not want the dog but instead, it ended up in the shelter. The breeder advised the Society who they would like the dog to go to but instead, they did the opposite. Not only did they ignore the breeder they ignored phone calls and no call backs when messages were left. Their excuse is they are only volunteers. Isn't that part of volunteering and your job? I understand not calling back same day, but still 5 days later no call back?? I have heard a lot of complaints regarding this organization, and I am not sure why it's still up and running and they are still taking in animals. I truly feel bad for these animals that are in this shelter. They all deserve a special home and taken care of. They should not be treated like puppets and prizes to bring in more money for the shelter. read more

Nobody is perfect. I deal with this shelter often enough and never had a serious problem. The place is always clean, the staff has always been very helpful, polite, and treated me with respect. Sometimes there is a miscommunocation. Possibly the "completely botched adoption" was that the cat was already promised to the people if the 3 day trial worked. It probably worked or they would have called you. As for the mentally unstable person, I don't believe the shelters can do medical checks-its called HIPPA. Check it out. And its quite possible some other person actually adopted the pet then gave it to the unemployed mentally unstable person. Give these shelters a break, they can only check so much. I adopted a dog from the shelter last May. Her name was Lucy and she is still up for adoption. Please read this if you are considering adopting her. After I had her for four days she attacked me. She pushed me down unto the ground, got on top of me and grabbed my arm and would not let go. I finally got her off of me long enough for me to crawl into the house. I was almost in when she latched unto my pants leg. I kicked out and she let me go. She was in a fenced back yard so I didn't worry about her hurting anyone else. My sister came and took me to the emergency room where I had a CT scan of my head, wounds cleaned and bandaged, antibiotics and a tetnus shoot. The doctor called the police. I wanted them to help me get her back to the shelter, but, they told me to call the shelter. I called the shelter and they told me to bring her back. How did they think I would be able to get Lucy in my car after she had already attacked me? I insisted they come to get her and they finally did. Make sure you get all of the facts before you get a dog from the shelter. read more

My Girl Scout Troop visited there because a parent said she had adopted two cats, and another adopted a small dog from the shelter and were very pleased with the adoption. They were very informative for the girls and allowed them to view all the animals and to interact with the cats and 1 dog. (I asked that the other dogs not interact with the children just to be safe since these were not MY children). One cat had a problem when we were there and I pointed it out to the staff and she went right in to check on her. I believe they do care about the animals there. The shelter is very clean and the animals appear to be well cared for. read more

They completely botched our cat adoption. We had a cat, in our carrier, ready to take home when we started doing the adoption paperwork. The employee helping us paused and then left, returning with the manager, to tell us that they had already set our cat up to be placed into a foster home on a "3-day trial basis" later that day. We pleaded with them to let us take her as we were willing to adopt her permanently, no strings attached. They promised to call us after they discussed it & we never heard back from them. I noticed later that evening that the cat we wanted had been removed from their Petfinder listings. I left a comment on their Facebook page expressing my disappointment with how they handled the situation and I was blocked from commenting on their page and my post was deleted. We have supported LHS for the last couple years with hundreds of pounds of food and monetary donations, but will no longer support a rescue that would rather place animals into temporary foster homes instead of permanent adoptions. We've heard from other people that their communication skills have really suffered with new leadership. I hope, for the animals' sake, that they get this resolved. It cost us the cat we wanted and they, in turn, are losing two supporters. Given their inability to call me to discuss the matter, however, I'm left with the impression that they don't really care. read more
