This is a long overdue review, but it has to be said, I LOVE the care I receive here. I am that person that "woke up like that" or threw my back out randomly for no reason. I am also a remote worker, so being a keyboard warrior isn't doing me any favors. Neither are my long gaming sessions, but a gal's gotta have some fun. What can I say? Every time I've come in, I leave far better than when I entered. Dr. McTague has been the best. (I'm sure other providers here provide excellent care as well.) It's almost hilarious that my response to "how did this happen" is "me simply existing" & he just gets it. But I'm happy to report that I'm back to a maintenance level of care & more often than not, pain-free. If you're prone to sleeping weird & waking up unable to turn your neck, come here. It also must be said, their massage therapists are absolute sorcerers. Ken, JJ, & everyone do amazing work. I've had to sit in my car for a few minutes after to come back to earth after a session. I rarely write five-star reviews and sometimes question when businesses consistently get them, but Lakeside Spine deserves every one of these five stars. I've been suffering from severe chronic lower back pain for months and came to them in desperation after feeling like I'd exhausted all other options--having seen four surgeons and gone through PT at a well-known clinic with no success. They were able to get me in the same day I called. Dr. McTague was the first person I've encountered in my ten-year journey with back pain who actually listened to me, interpreted my symptoms and history, and provided me with a scientific explanation and plan that I understood. It was presented to me in a caring and understandable way. I loved the use of visual aids, from handouts to whiteboard drawings and models. I left and literally cried tears of relief, having been given a plan I could live with and implement on my own. Beyond that incredible initial experience, I've been blown away by how quickly the first exercise he gave me relieved the pinch, constant burn, and ache at my L5-S1 level. No weird pseudoscience or push to do anything I was uncomfortable with (he listened to my past experience with McKenzie therapy and how it had exacerbated my symptoms and adjusted to go slower)--just a practical exercise to directly treat what is happening in my back. At age 40, I was starting to feel like everything I love and live for was being taken from me. But not only do I now have realistic hope that I will get back to most, if not all, of those activities again, but within one week, I've already been able to start doing a few of them with the exercise plan he gave me and the stoplight system. I'm excited for my treatment plan, and even though I know there will be some bumps in the road, Dr. McTague already prepared me for this and gave me tips on how to reframe that experience. My experience is mine, and everyone's situation is unique and different, but I had to share this because I hope that someone else who is suffering can experience the care that I did and hopefully rewrite their negative experiences. So, I see the amazing Dr. Pare. I barely walked in several years ago in agony with back pain. Full disclosure- I gained a bunch of weight during COVID and still he was able to help me. He practices a really specific type of treatment which he takes time to break down for you. He's communicative, knowledgeable, professionally and friendly. I haven't had my backaches since. Sometimes I feel a little twinge and I know exactly which exercises to do to adjust myself. The office staff are all super accommodating, professional and uber friendly. I was 7months pregnant and experiencing significant sciatica pain (to the point where I was uncomfortable walking). I started to complete the new patient request online but the next available appointment seemed to be a week later. Ana, at the front desk, reached out directly offering to help. She was able to get me in 2 days later to see Dr. Kiper I met with Dr. Kiper who was trained in Webster technique (safe for pregnancy). He was so easy to talk to and took the time to educate me on why I was experiencing pain. I quickly learned that the stretches I thought would help relieve pain were making things worse. He gave me a very manageable treatment plan: practice two moves daily. My pain was almost completely gone in a few days. I continued to see Dr. Kiper and/or Dr. Mendez (both Webster-certified) throughout my pregnancy. They were both extremely patient and helped me understand ways to treat pain through safe movement. Typically, when I visit a doctors office, I'm left feeling rushed and dismissed. However working with Dr. Pare has been a breath of fresh air. Not only does he take his time to listen, he probes further with leading questions and ensures he gets to the root cause. Even when I get anxiety about a not so serious issue, I feel comfortable enough to reach out and confirm with Dr. Pare knowing I won't be judged. He even checks in once in a while to see how things are going. What doctor does that? Dr. Pare carries a holistic approach to healing and won't upsell you or try to get you to come in more, he encourages and supports you with lifestyle changes so you can be on your way. I now have the confidence to go to the gym regularly and actually love working out. I had a friend visiting who was in need of a temporary PT. I recommended her to Dr. Pare. This review has been a long time coming. I was looking for a chiropractor in my area to address lower back pain (all due to poor posture and sitting on my couch during work hours.) Dr. Kiper and staff came highly recommended online, and I will back that up to the hilt. He is, easily, the best chiropractor I've ever worked with and quite possibility the best physician too. My wife and I tried Dr. Kiper & Co. on the recommendation of our trainer and have had a completely eye-opening experience. Both of us have different lingering joint pain issues that Dr. Kiper was able to rapidly address. He provided basic, quick daily stretching routines that have significantly helped our issues and put us on a path to long term comfort. Their approach to healthcare is extremely refreshing; he will tell you in your first appointment that his goal is to teach you how to be healthier and establish a routine on your own, to the point where you no longer need his help down the road (which he admits is a horrible business model, but the absolute right thing to do!). For a few months we saw him and his team regularly for check-ins and advancements in our at-home stretching routines, and as we improved the appointments were less frequent. We're now at the point where we have infrequent check-ins for ongoing maintenance and have been extremely happy with the results and care provided. We are also regular users of Ken, the in-house massage therapist, and we have nothing but high praise for his work. Dr. Kiper and the team all communicate well across different services / patients / providers, so Ken is always up to speed on your latest aches and pains and can get down to business right away. I heavily rely on Google/Yelp reviews for life decisions, and Lakeside Spine & Wellness deserves the praise. After getting into a car accident, I began seeing Dr Pare to help me alleviate lower back and hip pain. He's gone beyond just listening to and validating my concerns, and has truly been a cheerleader throughout my recovery. Lakeside's use of PhysiApp is super helpful to keeping track of which exercises and stretches I'm meant to do. Being able to refresh my memory of proper technique with the videos on the app is SO hepful. And Dr. Pare's check-ins between appointments through the app shows genuine care. In addition to physical therapy, a few massage appointments with Ken were also included in my care plan. Ken is a fantastic masseuse, and incorporated feedback from Dr Pare and myself into the bodywork. Although he's super intuitive with the pressure and style he uses, he still checks in throughout the massage to be sure everything is comfortable. I know these types of reviews can sound like over-the-top gushing, but to be honest Lakeside has earned it. They are A+++++. Highly recommend! read more

I have had scoliosis with back pain all my life and have been seeing chiropractors and physical therapists on and off for 30 years. I was attracted to this business by the good reviews, but my experience was meh. Each chiropractic session involves like 5 minutes of talking about how you feel, 15 minutes of practicing stretches and like 7 minutes of chiropractic adjustments. This chiropractic center follows the McKenzie method which is probably a good choice for people who really want a combination of good physical therapy stretching and chiropractic work rolled into one. In fact, if you don't know how to stretch or have never seen a physical therapist, then I would recommend them and the McKenzie method. However, if you have already been through physical therapy a bunch of times and already follow a good regimen of stretches on your own then you will probably find learning the McKenzie variants of the same stretches about as tiresome as I did. When I explained to them that I already knew these same stretches and was practicing them on my own, they were dismissive and made no real effort to tailor my experience. My criticism is more with the McKenna method not being the right fit for me. I should have better researched what I was getting into. My therapists were all fine and professional. The actual chiropractic adjustments they gave were ok but not above average in my experience. If you are like me and looking for more chiropractic adjustments and need less help with the stretching, look elsewhere. They are also more pushy than I like about selling your their special McKenzie cushions and vitamins/supplements and stuff. read more

I had spent nearly 10k in treatment at other chiropractic offices and pain management for cervical radiculopathy that was pinching my brachial nerve causing loss of sensation in my left forearm and thumb for almost a year. I was at a loss as as what to do. My acupuncturist, Sarah Bartle, at Uptown Acupuncture recommended this clinic as she had had good results in the past. I had a call with Dr. Kiper and he was able to tell I was hurting and frustrated and not sure as what to do. He was very compassionate and worked with me and was able to tailor a custom recovery plan as he had dealt with many patients suffering from the same issue in the past. He was also very up front with me and made it clear he wasn't trying to take my money or keep me coming back like other offices that abuse their clients. Simply 1.5 months of steady treatment and I was off my pain meds and muscle relaxers and felt like there was a light at the end of this dark tunnel of pain that I'd been in for almost a year. Dr Kiper had me work with Dr Roman Lahr since he specializes in rehabilitation therapy. They both worked in harmony as they leaned on each other's knowledge and expertise and were very gentle and precise in their care. I received custom, personal tailored care and was given custom exercises to help keep me out of pain and increase my strength and mobility. What I loved about this office is they know when to work with your doctors for pain management meds or with your PCP to identify an underlying issue such as a change in BP mediation. They also recognize that drugs aren't the solution. The attention to detail and organization is on point. Kudos to Dr Kiper as he runs a tight ship! I am now back to longboarding, in no pain, and am back to my happy self. Highly recommend this office for disc issues. My wife also had back issues and she is now doing yoga and able to touch her toes for the first time in 2 years. Awful experience. I wish I could give zero stars. The front desk woman explained my insurance to me in a private room, but did not tell me what the out of pocket cost would be. She just explained my deductible to me and how I didn't hit it yet, which I already knew. She then moved on from cost and went into the cancellation policy, etc. and tried to hurry me into the appointment. Before she could do so, I asked what the out of pocket cost was. I'm used to around $35 out of pocket, but was willing to pay up to around $100 since we're in Chicago. After I inquired, THEN she told me the out of pocket cost for me today would be $250. I'm not rich just so we're clear lol. This number was shocking to me! I looked at her, feeling so uncomfortable, and said "this is really awkward but I simply cannot afford this. I'm so sorry" I even offered to pay the $95 cancellation fee she just spoke about. She then went on to say it would actually be $200 to cancel today because "other people who are in pain could've had this slot". LOL. I'm not sure about anyone else, but the only person I care to get lectured by is my mother. I then went on to say "I won't be paying $200 for nothing". And walked out. I had a panic attack in the car from the confrontation and the embarrassment. 0/10 will never go here and will do the opposite of recommend it to everyone. read more

Did not even check what is wrong with my back and see what might be reason of my pain, but jump right in and ask me to do all kind of workout with my already painful areas.... got worse when he is done ordering me to do all kind of excise that creates more pain and discomfort to my back. and After I reach home I could not even sleep because the pain got worse. this place is money sucker, try to make me to make appointment for next day, because don't have available slot after a week, and force me to pay $27 for a sit cushion that cost maybe $2. by the way it is a piece of junk. I came here a few years ago and saw Dr Kiper Who is fantastic he helped me with my low back pain and sciatica. He taught me exercises to alleviate the pain I was feeling and to keep it from coming back. I was so convinced before coming here that I was doomed to be in pain forever but I was being a bit dramatic. Recently I had some chest pain that was actually stemming from my shoulder and neck. This time I saw Dr Koch and he is also amazing he really listens to your concerns encourages you to ask questions and I always leave feeling refreshed and my pain has greatly improved and so has my mobility. When I first came into Lakeside Spine & Wellness, I could barely get up from sitting or laying down. The pain I had been experiencing was incredible. Dr. Pare was so kind and understanding of the issue. He took the time to explain what was happening and how to fix it. Recently I was reviewing my health insurance policy and saw I have 30 yearly chiropractic visits. I thought I had to take a look at my options because I've had back pain for years and never have found substantial long term relief. I have scoliosis and was having some sciatic pain. I went to ZocDoc and found Dr.Mendez. I have been seeing her for about a month but noticed improvement after my first visit. I have almost no pain mode and I forgot what this felt like! The office is also nice and clean and they provide my favorite lifesaver mints in the waiting room so that is a huge plus. Dr. Mendez has done everything to make me feel comfortable with my treatment and explains it all to me which I really appreciate. She is so friendly and always keeps a nice conversation going if I feel like chatting. I've also told her I've been tired on visits and she respectfully always takes it at my pace! read more

Recently I "threw my back out" for probably the 3rd time in my life. Excruciating lower back pain. Despite the pain and inability to move like a human being, I had the fear that it would take weeks if not months to get better -that had been how it was in the past. A friend suggested Dr. Kiper. I got in to see him within two days. My pain level at that time was a solid 9. Dr Kiper assessed me, explained what was going on in words I could understand, and then showed me a very simple exercise I was to do 3 times a day. 24 hours later, my pain had gone from a 9, to a 2 or 3. I won't say it was a miracle, because he clearly explained the science behind it. What I can say is that what has taken months to partially fix in the past, was fixed very quickly. Once in a while you find a medical professional who puts your health above all else. Dr Kiper is one such medical professional. I highly recommend seeing him for back problems. Dr. Kiper is an absolute savior! I came in with what I thought was a sprained cervical spine. Which at the age of 23, I thought that was a bit extreme. But at our first meeting he told me that my neck wasn't sprained at all. After hearing that, I felt relieved instantly! What I had was very common and easily treatable with consistent exercises that he gave me to do at home. I've been seeing him for less than a month and my symptoms have completely disappeared. With the exercises provided along with massages and a little physical therapy for breathing and rebuilding strength, I'm no longer in pain and have full range of motion in my neck. My experience with this team has been nothing but a positive one compared to other chiropractors I've been to. I went to see Dr. Kiper for chronic neck pain several months after I took a fall and split open my chin on the pavement. Prior to finding Dr. Kiper, I had already seen a neurologist and tried 3 weeks of physical therapy to no avail. Being stuck sitting around during quarantine was killing my back and neck, I am so thankful I found Dr Kiper. He does things differently than most chiropractors... which means you don't have to go back every week for the rest of your life for temporary fixes. He does do adjustments but he assigns compensatory stretches to help you get your body back to neutral; that's where the real magic is. He performed a thorough evaluation, gave exercises, adjusted me and did soft tissue work. I have been to many different chiropractors over the years and they have told me some incredibly outlandish things about how adjustments would solve everything from stomach issues to mental clarity....if I continue to go to them for the rest of my life.... Dr. Kiper backs his claims with science and explains everything in a really digestible way. He and his team want to get you the correct care and give you the tools to heal properly as quickly and inexpensively as possible. I think in total my treatment plan was 8 appointments(2 being massages) and even after the first one my pain had decreased tremendously. Throughout treatment I have been given various exercises that I use currently but can also use in the future when my pain reoccurs. I wish that I could give this office a glowing recommendation. Unfortunately, I cannot, because I personally had a pretty negative experience here. However, I am giving them three stars because Dr. Kiper and his team are in fact very skilled. Birgitta is hands down the best massage therapist that I've ever worked with, outside of instructors at the massage school I went to in California. She's amazing. Her, I can definitely recommend. Let's start with how I ended up here in the first place. There are many, many chiropractors in Chicago. When my back started hurting, I could certainly could have picked a place closer to home. I went here, because when I first moved to Chicago, I got a like and follow on Instagram from Dr. Kiper. I saw pics of him and his hubs, and I thought if I ever needed a chiro, that would be the place to go. But it turned out that Brenda (the receptionist) had probably been the one to do that, and also, they had done a follow-unfollow. That is, where they follow you first to get you to follow back, then they unfollow you. I find that so cheap and annoying. Should have been a red flag. (For me, maybe not for you). Red flag #2 for me was when Dr. Kiper stopped me during our first visit, when I was trying to give him some information on my background so that he could work with me better. He said that if I kept talking, then we wouldn't get any work done. Fair point. So I stopped talking. However, that meant that I wasn't able to relay some information that became very pertinent later. (I'll get back to that.) During that visit, he also mentioned something about a "fat pad" at the base of my neck. Honestly, I think my neck looks pretty normal, and I really wasn't concerned about that, but he just kept talking about how "so many women" have that. Ok, I guess? Red flag #3 was in my second visit, when he brought up the fat pad again - again, unprompted. "So you're telling me I have a fat neck?" I joked. "Hahaha," he laughed, as if to say, "darn straight, I was." He then proceeded to give me "exercises" that would "correct" this very dire problem of a fat neck which was seriously not at all the problem I was there to see him about, nor did I care. Then, at some point, he mentioned how large my breasts are. Yeah, I get it. Sometimes big boobs can contribute to low back issues (which was/is my issue, BTW). But I didn't go in there complaining of big boobs and a fat neck. And if he had listened to me tell him about my history, he would have known that my low back issues predated my breasts being the size they are now. So basically, he was standing there, mansplaining my pain to me and giving me "solutions" to "problems" that aren't real issues for me, while ignoring what I actually have to say about myself. Great start. And speaking about what I have to say about myself.... there is a certain boundary issue that I have in bodywork, which I mentioned to him in part (not fully, because he cut me off), and had spoken to Brenda about multiple times when booking massage appointments. Yet when I came in for my third visit - which I had been told was kind of a quick check, just to make sure I was doing fine - I discovered that they had planned for me additional services that had not been communicated to me beforehand, and which involved certain aspects that went directly against this boundary that I have. That made me a little upset. So I took a breather, and was ready to at least see Dr. Kiper for my check-in (and was willing to pay the full price of whatever they were going to charge me). But it wasn't to be. Brenda actually had me check in. But it was a ruse. It turned out that Dr. Kiper actually asked her to have me rescheduled. Well, I didn't want to reschedule. I had traveled over an hour to get there. I was exhausted. I just wanted a little adjustment and to be on my way. But Brenda kept smiling while lying to my face, and Dr. Kiper refused to see me. Eventually, I left, angry, unsatisfied, never wanting to go back there again, hating all chiropractors. I give Dr. Kiper one point for calling me after this all went down. That was decent of him. However, I can say that I would have given them (many) more points if he had been willing to speak to me that day about what happened, and/or go through with my appointment. On the phone, Dr. Kiper said he doesn't think they can "accommodate" a patient like me. Well, I don't want to go back. A patient like me is someone who enjoys up-front communication about bodywork, respect for personal boundaries, and dislikes having their body judged and being given unsolicited advice about things that aren't problems. So yeah, I guess he's right. It seems they really can't accommodate a patient like me. Maybe your experience there was or will be wildly different from mine.
