Neel?) tried to make me pay for it before my insurance company even got the claims, as in my mouth was still numb and I hadn't been out of the chair for five minutes. Now this dental office is calling me. (I blocked the number.) And sending me emails insisting on being paid. It has been TWO WEEKS! The average health claim for any doctor's visit or dental visit is 30-45 days. I haven't even received confirmation of the second claim and what was/wasn't paid, and they're sending me emails complaining about pay. I'm changing my three-star review to a one-star review. I bought a brand new car off the lot and the car dealers were less pushy than this dental office. I cannot even begin to explain how much I regret coming here. Learned my lesson for sure. If this dental office is stalking reviews, you WILL be paid when I actually get PROOF of the second claim. Until I receive it FROM MY INSURANCE COMPANY, NOT YOU, your phone number will be blocked and your emails sent to spam. If you do not stop this behavior, I will be reporting this to the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Give your customers a CHANCE to get the results from their insurance company. No one is trying to stiff you on payments. If this was 45 days later, then fine. But it's TWO WEEKS!

I had 2 root canals done at a price which was my understanding covered the entire cost which was well over .$2,000. On the 2nd appointment the price changed so I received one crown and a temporary crown and I would have to pay another $1,000 for the 2nd permanent crown. Dr Gamalinda knew I couldn't afford the 2nd crown so it was left unfinished and I had to get an extraction at a different dentist. Based on this experience I would not recommend this place for dental care.

Cleanings have been fine, and I have gotten three fillings taken care of here. The first two were with Dr. Hagan. The one I got today was with a new dentist, I believe his name is Dr. Shah (I'm not positive of the spelling.) I have weird teeth. Other dentists have commented that I have long tooth roots and long nerves, and nerves that connect to each other in weird places. This means that over the years I have been able to feel a drill when I "shouldn't" be able to. This happened with my first filling appointment with Dr. Hagan. When I felt the pain he stopped and was apologetic. He left and took another look at my chart and x-rays, and confirmed that I have what he called a rare "extra" nerve that needed to be numbed in a different place. He numbed it, waited longer than usual, and continued. Everything was fine. At my next filling years later, I reminded him of what happened the last time. He confirmed that he had already seen his note in my chart and that he would give me the extra numbing shots and wait longer for them to kick in. There were no problems that time. Today I had a filling with the new dentist. I told him about my history and that I usually needed extra numbing and more time. I said that another dentist here had made a note of it and asked if he saw it. He was dismissive, saying something to the effect of "I'm very good at this/I've done this a lot". He didn't mention whether he had seen the note in my chart. I was not trying to infer that he isn't a good dentist, I was just telling him about my history. He assured me that the numbing would work fast. He then started drilling, which I fully felt. I cried out in pain and raised my hand and he stopped. He seemed shocked that I could feel it. (Like I said, I am aware that my teeth are unusual, but I told him about it to *prevent this from happening*. And I assumed he would have seen Dr. Hagan's note in my chart.) I was crying at this point. He said sorry and gave me another shot and waited a while. When he started drilling again everything was fine. He then had to stop and leave the room for about 15-20 minutes for what seemed like an emergency with another patient. Fine, that is not something he can control. But when he came back I could feel the drill again after a while. Again he seemed surprised and skeptical, but numbed me more before continuing, and finished the filling. I will not be returning to this office after this appointment. I am not exaggerating when I say it was traumatic. It is horrible to feel a drill going into your tooth. It is extremely frustrating to be dismissed and treated like you're being dramatic or lying about pain. I have no reason to make up the fact that I am not numb enough. I don't want to feel a drill. I just want the filling to be over with. I don't care how "good" you are or how many fillings you have done. A patient is an expert when it comes to their own body and their own past experiences. And medical professionals should listen to their patients. The dentist apologized at the end of my appointment, but the damage had been done, and if he had read my chart before my appointment, or taken me seriously at the beginning of my appointment, this wouldn't have happened and no apology would have been necessary.

They play up a sense of urgency and heavy handed tactics to get you to agree. My biggest regret is not getting a second opinion. For all their modernity, they are incapable of gathering an accurate estimate from your insurance. I have never had this experience with any other dental practice; the final bill has always aligned with the insurance estimate. At Artful Smiles, the bill was always, always significantly more than the delivered estimate. When I questioned the office on this, they told me to take it up with my insurance. Again, I have never had another dental practice (or doctor's office) do this. To give some idea of how absurd their pricing is, I was quoted $1,000 (with insurance!) for a crown. I am mortified to say I just accepted this without question. The final bill, however, was nearly $2,000 for a single crown. The crown broke down within a few years. I had a replacement done at North Shore Dental down the street for under $400. This office profits on scamming their clients and exploiting people in need of care. There are plenty of honest dentists in Evanston; I urge you to entrust your dental care to anyone other than these scam artists.

They convinced me to do Invisalign a few years ago. Not covered by my insurance, and the only discount they offered was if I paid in full up front. So, sure, I did it, and yes, I am glad I did it in the end, but the process was very frustrating. They said I would be swapping out aligners over the course of about 8 months, but that it could take a little longer. They did not explain that they would be placing semi-permanent attachments on my teeth until I was sitting in the chair. I felt like, oh, this is basically the same thing as having braces again. I followed all of their instructions, but it still took about two years to finish the process. At what I thought was the end of my Invisalign treatment, since they said it was the end, they had me sign a piece of paper that said they actually recommended further treatment. They'd been "fine-tuning" everything on the top, but apparently thought something else was needed on the bottom, but hadn't addressed that in the six months prior, so that I could have been wearing different bottom aligners, or something? I was vexed at this complete lack of information, only to have a hygienist sit down to put a wire retainer on the inside of my bottom teeth without saying ANYTHING. I had to ask, wait, what are you doing??? All of the Invisalign aside, they also recommended me for gum graft surgery to fix some gum recession, something that wearing those retainers for months/years actually exacerbates, yet another thing that was never explained. The last two times I have gone in for a cleaning, I really didn't like the male hygienist at all. He was very heavy-handed, poking my gums to measure each tooth for recession, and then "check for bleeding," like, yeah, my gums might bleed if you're jamming a metal pick into them. He also pulled up my X-rays and pointed at a couple of different spots and was like, "Yeah, these look like they're going to turn into cavities," before pushing some new spot-treatment. There was literally nothing on the X-ray to see, and I really wondered why the hygienist and not the actual dentist would be making calls like that. I've had one cavity in my entire life (of course, discovered and filled at Artful Smiles), so I was pissed off that this guy was pushing yet another expensive "treatment," yet again without any explanation of what it is, the cost or how long the "treatment" takes. After looking it up, I saw that it's very expensive, not covered by insurance, I guess approved in the US, but not widely used by dentists. Maybe it's great for some people, but I did not appreciate the aggressiveness. I shouldn't have to fend off unnecessary costs every time I get a cleaning.
