Customer service was good, we were greeted upon entering and asked if we wanted hibachi or table- initially we said hibachi, but they tried to set us at a table that was obviously full, and that was already going, and everyone said it was going to have to alternate to give us two seats so we opted for a booth. They had two hibachi tables coming one an apartment room and one in the back, but no one else was sitting at a table or a booth. I ordered one roll and my partner order something that look like a bridge +2 Thai teas. The teas were horrible, they came in plastic cups like most to go places and tasted nothing like Thai teas. The sushi took almost 40 minutes to come out and they forgot our edamame- they brought it after the sushi. The sushi itself was good, I would order again- just to go. Extremely Unprofessional Experience - I Will No Longer Support This Business I've ordered takeout from Lampu Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar in Mount Dora many times without issue, but after my recent experience, I will never support this business again. The level of rudeness and unprofessionalism from both the staff and management was unacceptable. To begin, their posted Friday hours are 11:00 AM-2:00 PM and 4:00 PM-10:00 PM. At 9:30 PM, I called to place a takeout order and was told by the hostess that they stop taking orders over the phone at exactly 9:30. I asked if I could come in and order takeout since I live nearby, and she replied (with clear attitude) that they weren't taking any more orders--except for dine-in. I asked to clarify: "So, if I come in and dine, you will seat me?" Her response: "We aren't taking orders." The tone was dismissive and rude. Since I live less than three minutes away, I drove over to dine in. Upon arriving, I was greeted by two young hostesses I've seen many times before--one with black curly hair, one blonde. I asked to be seated, and the hostess with black hair said she needed to check. She loudly yelled across the dining area to ask the manager if they were still seating. The manager, an Asian woman, shouted back that they were not. I asked if the manager could come speak with me. When she approached, I asked why the restaurant advertises being open until 10 PM if they stop seating and taking orders by 9:30 PM. She simply said, "That's how we operate." Another staff member--an Asian man cleaning nearby--interjected, saying many businesses do the same. I responded that if that's the case, they should update their listed hours. Advertising one thing and operating another way is misleading and unprofessional. I also pointed out that the hostess I spoke to earlier had an attitude over the phone, and that it's not acceptable from someone whose role is to greet and assist customers. The hostess responded, "Sorry if you felt that way," and claimed she wasn't being rude. I explained that her tone was absolutely condescending--especially when she said, "We just aren't taking any orders." As I left and was stepping out the door, I heard the blonde hostess yell, "NOW GET OUT OF HERE!!" I walked back in, shocked, only to find the staff laughing. I asked, "Really?" and the manager--who might even be the owner--dismissively said, "She was just kidding." No apology, no accountability. When I expressed how unprofessional their conduct was, the same man who had spoken earlier jumped back in and said, "Yeah, leave it in the review." So here it is. As much as I've enjoyed the food in the past, I cannot support a business that treats its customers with such blatant disrespect. Laughing at a customer and making comments before they even walk out the door is wildly unprofessional. There are plenty of great sushi places in the area that value their patrons and conduct business with integrity--I encourage everyone to support those establishments instead. read more

I cannot express how disgusted I was with our service and food at Lampu. I came with my wife for date night and we ordered hibachi from a regular table. It took 40 minutes before our food arrived at the table, and it was cold. COLD! The fried egg looked like it had been dragged through the dirt and thrown on the rice as an afterthought. I pointed all of this out to my server and all he did was apologize. I mentioned it to the hostess when we paid as we left, and all she did was apologize. We spent $50 for cold food and slow service and for a stupid apology that means nothing. Add to that seeing a german roach on the table and it's an EASY decision to never come back. read more

Everyone who was having Hibachi looked like they were having a great time. However, we were there for sushi. My wife had the spider roll and it was decent, it had a nice crunch and the sauce was about right. I had the chirashi. And I'll admit it, chirashi is a meal for the true sashimi snob. It is simply a chef's choice of sashimi scattered and presented over a bowl of rice. It can be one of the best gauges of the overall quality of a sushi restaurant however it can also be a risky move when trying a restaurant for the first time. Well, first issue... 4 pieces of imitation crab front and center. I don't typically see imitation crab with chirashi and considering with chirashi you want to the best of the best from the chefs, most restaurants do not include it. Next, much of the fish seemed pale: tuna, salmon and shrimp, which can be signs of a quality issue. But it wasn't smelly(which can definitely be a bad sign). The taste was just mediocre: not great but not bad either. The octopus, however, seemed fine. Lastly, I would like to have seen some roe decorating the top and a piece or two of tamagoyaki(egg omelet) would have been nice. read more

First and last time visitors (we left after ordering the appetizer). We had high hopes after finally finding a Japanese steakhouse...and we will not be back. We started with sweet teas, but the restaurant forgot to put tea bags in the water while making it (our sweet teas were clear sugar water). We ordered steamed pork dumplings for an appetizer while waiting for the hibachi table to fill up (dumplings were excellent). The waitress took our order for the hibachi (two filet mignon and lobster) and, 10 mins later, comes back to tell us the restaurant doesn't have any filet mignon. Originally this was no problem and we changed our order to scallops and lobster on the hibachi. 10 minutes later the waitress comes back and says that, because they don't have a "scallops and lobster" combo on the menu that she'd have to charge us for the cheapest combo "chicken and scallops" at $23 and then add an extra lobster tail at $19. We brought management over and explained that it was their issue that they ran out of ingredients and that we were trying to come to a substitution arrangement that worked both for us and for the restaurant without basically charging us each for two hibachi meals. The management said that there was "no key on the POS for scallops and lobster and the $42 per plate would have to do." I told them that we'll just pay for our sugar waters and pork dumplings and go. I was shocked when they just said ok and left the waitress to deal with it. The entire hibachi table looked stunned. We paid for our food and went next door to El Mezcal. My recommendation: skip Lampu until they get management that understands the restaurant business. There is a reason they've dropped from 5 stars in 2010 to 2.5 stars now. read more

Always passed this place up over the years and would get my sushi rolls in the downtown area. Well one night i decided to stop in for some sushi and this place has now become my go to for sushi rolls. I only order cooked rolls from any place around town for reasons of experience. The rolls are the largest in town, best prices and delicious. Sure to leave your belly happy. Staff is always friendly and pleasant. The owner likes to joke around a bit but in good taste. Be aware, probably the presentation of the place outside would trick you, but a soon you inside you get into an authentic Japanese restaurant. Price is really reasonable. My family loves this place. We try to visit at least once a month. We bring family who visits from out of state and then they request to return on the next trip. Great prices, good food, excellent staff, friendly owners. We always order as the menu states, but have overheard super picky people order with strange requests that they always graciously accommodate. This is a great place for a celebration dinner. Their chefs are excellent cooks, the food is delicious. My spouse had the shrimp and scallop combo. I had the steak with the rice & noodles, soup and salad with every meal. All of it was great. The prices are reasonable since the chef is quite entertaining, humorous and friendly. We went to Lampu the other night for a birthday dinner. Let me just say....1st and last time! We have been to Hibachi restaurants before and this was, by far, the worst! As for the restaurant set up, not bad. Spacious and plenty of seating. The cook did not interact with us at all. He read off what we had ordered and cooked and served. No flipping of the veggies for the guests to catch in their mouths. No Sake squirting. Nothing entertaining other than him cooking! The worst part of our visit was the server/waitress. Never asked if we wanted refills or anything else for that matter. Thank God there was a service station nearby where we were able to get our own napkins, drink refills(when we got tired of waiting) and to-go containers when we had enough. Oh but she did come running over when she saw us standing up to leave. She began to look frantically for the credit card book until we told her that someone else took the payment for us when we asked them too. Absolute worst service! Oh, and then they have the nerve to put 18% gratuity! I don't mind when they actually deserve it but that was definitely not the case. Would I recommend this restaurant? Hell no!! read more

Our whole family loves this restaurant. The food at the grill is great and watching them cook it is always fun. Some chefs are more entertaining than others, but that seems to be true about any restaurant of this style. You also get a lot of food. In reading reviews of Lampu, I think that my review is going to sound similar to the current/former California residents that have tried it: Lampu is surprisingly good. Surprising because it's in a strip mall, their presentation is anything but immaculate, and their menu is pretty standard... but the food is good, especially when you factor in their modest prices and FREAKING HUGE portions. I grew up in Leesburg, Florida (a short drive away), but spent almost a decade of my adult life in San Francisco, California. Even after having my culinary standards raised to snob-like levels by San Francisco's rich and diverse dining, I can confidently claim that Lampu is definitely worth visiting. I have a hard time understanding why those that give Lampu low marks give it SUCH low marks. If you rate Lampu on price, service, and (most importantly) taste, there's no way that you can truthfully give it a bad rating. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because it IS a little seedy, it IS a little greasy, and it IS full of fat rednecks most of the time... but what authentic place in Lake County isn't? When all else fails, remember the saying: "If you're looking for a good place to eat, start with the place that has the longest line." I've been to Lampu numerous times, and have never seen it remotely empty. read more
