I've stopped by this place for a haircut Sunday evening ~5pm. I went to Maxi hair salon before but didn't like the cut I got there so was looking for a new place for hcs. They employees were polite and friendly. I had to wait only 15 minutes as there were two other people getting their hair trimmed, which for a walk-in is reasonable. I got my hair cut by a Vietnamese guy, can't recall his name now. He was one of the few people who cut my hair the way I wanted it. I haven't cut my hair in 6 months and often when I wait that long the hair stylist doesn't quite know what to do with a knop of unruly blonde hair and usually needs additional directions and readjustments. But this guy got it right. It was close to closing time and they had no other customers, so he seemed a bit bored put in extra effort into getting it perfect. I got a compliment on my hair about an hour later after walking out :) The cut for women was $20. If you don't want to wait long as a walk-in, just don't go there at peak hours. read more

I Showed her a picture of my hair when it was shorter to give her an idea, and a few others I googled. She also gave her professional opinion to fit the frame of my face. Didn't have to make an appointment or wait very long, but I was a little sketched out by the time I had handed my nails over for a Shellac manicure. The last two times I had it done in much nicer salons. This place looks like it could use a thorough clean. I also noticed the tools were in a plastic box, not being removed from a fresh sanitized sleeve. I asked if they cleaned their tools between clients and what the process was like. Don't know if I believed them. Also, they soaked my hands in acetone for quite a while. I had to pull them out myself and recommend to the girl that filing the surface first would help remove the old gel. *sigh* I'm just terrified of getting my nails done ever again and hope that they really did clean their tools the way they claim they did.. read more

My acrylic nail literally fell off after a week. That should NEVER happen. I will be going back and asking for a refund. On top of that the paint job was funky to begin with, and the thumb nail was never fully attached. Place was not very nice, and she didn't have my wash my hands before applying the acrylics, or put a towel down. They also had me wait under the fan for half an hour while attending another client, even when I had to leave. Stars are for the manicurist being very nice and listening to my requests, and that they took me as a walk in. read more

Highly recommend this nail salon. Most nail salons in Berkeley are sketchy on terms of sanitation and customer service but this location does not exemplify those negative qualities. The salon itself is neat and clean in appearance and the implements used for nail care are unquestionably clean. Today I went in for a gel Manicure and was pleasantly greeted and worked on by a woman named My. She was quick, thorough, and had a nice personality. I got acrylics here and they are so pretty!!!!! Not too thick and painted very nicely. I showed the lady a picture of how I wanted them and they look exactly like it. The sign in the window listed a haircut as $15 which seemed pretty reasonable. There was no wait so I went in and was seen right away. I was VERY specific about my bangs. I wanted them BLUNT, not wispy, and not above the eyebrows. I made sure she understood and she said she did. She spent less than fifteen minutes on my hair total and I ended up with short, wispy bangs that were well above my eyebrows. I don't think she even knew what the word blunt meant. They were uneven, too, and I asked if she could fix one side and she actually argued with me and wouldn't fix them. Seriously? I got up to pay and when I asked the total she told me, "Twenty dollars". I told her the sign said $15 and she said, "That's the price for men". I asked why was there a different price for men and she said because women's hair is longer. I asked, "What if I had short hair?" She giggled and said, "I don't know". I gave her a twenty and walked out. Sorry, lady. Looks like my vagina ate your tip. I came home and did some research. Oh, gee, look at that? It's illegal to charge different prices for services based on gender in California and has been that way since 1996. Good to know. read more

This is review for Gina and hair cuts. I was finishing up some work in Berkeley and decided to get a hair cut since it had been ages. I was already on University Ave, and after decided between Lhasa and Lans, I went with the latter since I had heard more about it. I was a drop-in and luckily the only one in there at the time, so I was immediately seated. The woman introduced herself as Gina and asked me what I wanted. I was a little vague, as I told her I just wanted a trim, some layers, and to take off split ends. She told me what she thought would look good, verifying it by showing me many pictures from different hair books to make sure I liked it. I told her I trusted her and to do whatever looked good. She snipped away while making friendly chit chat with me. She didn't do anything annoying like poking fake nails in my eye or combing my ears like some other places, and my hair cut came out exactly as the picture she pointed out to me -- it looked goooood if I do say so myself. It came out to only $20 and I tipped her $5. Only minus is that for that price, I didn't even get a hair wash like some other salons I had been to, but the upside is that she did straighten and style my hair while other salons charge you for the blow-dry. I met up with a friend at Starbucks and the first compliment I got was on my hair, so I'd like to think that it was a successful trip. Went for an eyelash perm because the price was the cheapest I could find in the east bay ($35). No frills, kinda janky studio but that wasn't the issue. The whole thing took almost TWO hours when it should no way take more than one. I also grew super nauseous from the fumes because I was laying amongst them in a tiny shut room for such a long time. All of this could maybe be forgivable if the final product was good, but my eyelashes barely look any different. Definitely worth some more money to go elsewhere. read more

I am asian, have thick short hair. I was looking for a very unique cut but I brought in a picture of myself with the haircut and I came in with the haircut I wanted, just a little bit longer. I came out with completely different hair. Way too short in the front, thinned everywhere, and just a complete disappointment. Gina cut my hair and she asked a lot of questions. She showed me pictures of sides and backs. I said yes or no, thinking that she was still aiming for what I had brought in but I think she instead gave me what she had pointed to in the pictures. To be honest, I don't think Gina knew how to cut my hair so that it would look like the picture I brought. To be fair, I've had this problem with other places. It sees like thick hair is no longer in. Every hairdresser I go to wants to thin it. It just makes me look ridiculous though. And when I ask hairdressers not to thin my hair, only a very few will listen to me because they think I don't understand how to cut hair (which is true, but I know my hair and what I want) In any case, not the place to go to if you know exactly what you want. It could possibly be good if you aren't quite sure what you want but I don't know, this was so far off from what I wanted and I'm so unhappy about it that I don't think I'd suggest it to friends. I'm going back to Oakland Chinatown. It has $9 cuts and they'll do what I ask. read more

Im giving this review a month late after seeing my hair in the mirror and feeling so fabulous and realizing I forgot to leave a review. I had such an amazing haircut from GINA! I came in after cutting my own hair and giving myself a mullet :( and some pretty ugly looking bangs. I felt terrible. I was staying a place near by and decide to take my chances on a neighborhood salon. I walked over and begged Gina to take me and she actually felt so bad at how desperate I was and called one of her scheduled appointments and pushed it back. I didnt expect much because I had already done so much damage buuuuuuut my haircut turned out GREAT! Well, the cut was only $25! Staff was very nice so I wanted to love it. But honestly, my haircut is horrible. My hair is easy to manage and (was) pretty long so I've never had a "bad haircut" before. Now it looks really choppy, is most definitely lopsided, and 3-4 inches shorter than requested. Okay, trying to think positive here... I finally understand what a bad haircut is like! Side note: the woman who accepted my payment said something about how bleaching my hair makes it unhealthy. Nice in theory, but I've never bleached my hair in my life. My hair looked like burned out crap after the cut because the stylist used a flat iron+hair spray on my completely straight hair. read more

I've been going to Gina every since August! I don't think I'll change hair stylist ever again! Unless I move far far away... To maintain my short hair, I've been going to Gina every 2 months, and she does a fantastic job every time. Now I am trying to grow out my hair, and it is at this awkward stage where its not short and its not long, its just kind of weird....so today I thought why not do something fun with this shortish hair! I have been coming here for years. They do haircuts, style, wax, and nails. I get my grooming needs met in one or two visits. Lan usually does my hair but they are all great. As a bonus, they are very reasonably priced; which helps when you are a broke student. I think my haircut costs around 15-20$, for medium length hair. They are conviently located near bart. parking can be somewhat of a pain but if you park on a side street there is no fee. (meters need to be paid, parking police are really bad in berkeley, beware). there are also a ton of great restaurants near lan. So make a day of it. hair and dinner/lunch. read more

I found myself on Shattuck desperate for a haircut, and this was the first result on Yelp. There was no wait, and Gina was awesome with my hair. She did a fantastic job with the razor. I have Indian hair, really curly but I style it straight, and I am rarely happy with haircuts. This was great. Lan and her staff were nice to me even though late on a Sunday I came in for a pedicure. Although the massage on the legs were just lotion then rub off I was thankful I wasn't going to get a leg massage after my pedicure because 9 times out of 10 it always hurts. Lan was very courteous and asked each time if my nails were short enough and also told me I had to ingrown nails which she gently and carefully removed. My feet never felt better and loved the massage chair. I booked a future appointment with her because of her awesome customer service and knowledge in letting me know of any issues. Just went here for a manicure and had an awful experience, and I'm incredibly salty about it. I had an appointment which all started well. The lady was super nice, I picked a color, all good. A few minutes into the appointment a guy walks in to get his hair done. I immediately feel some tension since this lady is the only one who seems to be working the salon. A few minutes later he almost walks out and she calls to him 5 minutes. She RUSHES my appointment to accommodate a walk-in. It really screams that this place values quantity over quality, I suppose I should have anticipated this out of a cheaper-priced manicure. She puts me under the fan and accommodates the walk-in, again, all fine. Here is the part that makes my blood boil....she completely forgot about me! She worked on the guys hair cut for 35 minutes, not once checking in with me when my nails were incredibly dry at that point. 35 minutes is incredibly long time to be under one of those fans! Not only that but when she was done with the guy's hair cut she didn't acknowledge me at all and took on the other person waiting for a hair cut. At this point I had been under the fan for at least 40 minutes and I was incredibly pissed. I spoke up and said "Can I please pay and get out of here?!" Only then did she acknowledge me and I paid. Wow....never going back to this place again. They have lost me for good as a customer. Come here if you want a cheap manicure which is great but TERRIBLE service. read more

I've been going to Lan for more than 15 years for my pedicures. They have the best nail salon in the Bay Area, with totally comfortable massage chairs, and excellent service - and still the same price! I've tried many places, especially since I moved to the Sonoma County and work in San Francisco, but Lan is worth the drive to Berkeley for my regular pedicure!! read more

Gina cut my hair and she was great. I walked in asked how much for this and was sold. They are friendly and fun here.

I came towards the end on a Sunday for a pedicure and the lady who gave me my pedicure was a little rough and she seemed like she was in a hurry... Then another client complained about her nails and then my manicurist switched with her to go fix the work... I did not appreciate that they switched in the middle and then I has the girl who the client was complaining about finish my pedicure... Then the staff started talking amongst themselves and it wasn't very respectful. I don't think I'll be back... I started treating myself to a regular mani pedi ~once a month when I moved to the neighborhood 1.5 yrs ago. I always come to LAN! They have great service, super friendly, super clean, comfortable massage chairs, and very reasonable prices. They are a bit slow and not that many manicurists on staff so plan to spend at least 1 hr if getting a mani pedi. Everyone is friendly and makes me feel super welcome - I get hugs whenever I come in. Once they even stayed open 1.5 hrs late for me when I showed up at 6:40 for a mani pedi. They always offer water or hot tea and often they bring you snacks like fresh baked cookies, home made egg rolls, or chex mix. They almost always have walk in appointments, and the prices are very reasonable - I think they just upped the price a few dollars - it's $32 for a mani pedi. Great nail salon! read more
