I came for dinner. I left hoping Lana's Café becomes an Austin institution. Anton, the head waiter, recommended the tuna tartare, and Nara took wonderful care of me all evening. Both are from Ukraine (not siblings, despite my being completely convinced they were). Their warmth made eating alone feel like having dinner with friends. Lana's was having an amazing night. Apparently not every restaurant in the area had that same luck tonight. "Somebody burned some food," Anton said. "We need eight fire trucks for that?" Me. "Slow day. Not us--them." Nods to some other restaurant outside the doors. I laughed so hard. Anton also introduced me to the Hugo Spritz. Think somewhere between a mojito and an Aperol Spritz--but lighter, sparkling, and finished with elderflower. Unfortunately, I can't tell you much more than that because I was thirsty. It was fantastic. Clearly. Ten minutes later it had disappeared, and somehow I was ordering a Cosmopolitan. Friends, how did I make it to forty eight years without having a Cosmo? Won't be making that mistake from hence forth and forevermore. As we talked, Anton shared that he fled Ukraine hoping for a freer life. Lana's is a woman-owned business, much of the staff is Ukrainian, and many have over fifteen years of culinary experience throughout Europe. Every dish reflects that level of care. He quietly said something that stayed with me: "Lana's needs to survive." If you care about supporting people rebuilding their lives after war, come eat here. Just a suggestion :) I ordered the tuna tartare which is layered with mashed avocado, mango purée, shallots, capers, chives, parsley, cilantro, a citrus-soy dressing, and finished with extra virgin olive oil. This dish made me irrationally happy. The tuna tartare was incredible: hand-cut sushi-grade Ahi tuna with avocado, mango purée, capers, chives, herbs, and a citrus-soy dressing. Every bite was perfectly balanced. I also learned the "chopsticks" were actually toasted crostini after one snapped in my hand. We both got a good laugh out of that. Every bite somehow gets sweeter, saltier, brighter, and richer at exactly the same time. I didn't even need to reach for the salt. Which if you know me is HUGE. Anton insisted I come back for the traditional Ukrainian borsch, served with all the traditional accompaniments because, as he put it, "It's home." I'll happily take him up on that. Probably next week or the one after. Grandkittens always need to be cat-sat. One tip: don't leave without your receipt. The QR code on it gets you out of the parking garage with three hours of free parking. Ask me how I know. Finally, Lana's reminded me of my daughter Maddie, who lives nearby on South Lamar. Lana would adore her. Then again, most people do. If you can't make it to Lana's, I highly recommend having a daughter like Maddie--just be prepared for a three-year-old to snatch your Barbie and announce, "No, Mommy...that's not what your Barbie says." Came here recently with a friend for dinner and had a very nice experience. It was part of their soft opening so there was a limited menu. My friend went for the Mushroom Ravioli with cream sauce, I went for the Caesars Salad. There was an option to add chicken for $6 but I opted to keep it all greens. We tried the Matcha drinks and I requested less sweet and he did a perfect job. The concoxion was right in my sweetness range which I appreciated. The service here was very attentive and I liked how he was very patient with us while we asked questions. Well the ravioli looked appetizing, and my Caesars Salad not only looked aesthetically pleasing, but it was appetizing as well. I liked how the salad was evenly coated with the perfect amount of dressing as some places put in way too much dressing. I believe it was around $16. Afterwards they walked by our table with a tray of warm chocolate chip cookies right out of the oven and offered us a complimentary sample. Oh my - superb! Very nice, small quaint place to hang out, get some coffee, they have wifi, and enjoy some unique dishes. I believe he said the sandwich was a popular menu item offered for lunch. Came here for brunch and was excited to try some Ukrainian food. There's validated parking in the garage of the retail center so that was convenient. The set up here is that you order up front and then seat yourself at a table. It's partially self service as they do still bring the food out to you and clear your plates once you're done. I got the strawberry matcha with almond milk which was surprisingly refreshing, the breakfast sandwich and the cottage cheese pancake. The breakfast sandwich was solid and the hash browns that came with it, delicious! I wasn't too fond of the cottage cheese pancake though but it was just not my taste. I can't wait to come back from lunch or dinner sometimes as I haven't been able to find any this type of cuisine since the Russian house closed down. read more

I had the chicken kyiv (new), boyfriend had the borscht, we shared honey cake and the smyrni (cottage cheese pancakes). Both were so good, but we both agreed the smyrni won by a tiny edge. Stumbled on Lana's Cafe by scrolling on IG. (I find the best places on that platform) Been following them for a week or so. Finally had an opportunity to check them out. So glad I did. What amazing attentive service. Such hospitality. Everyone was so nice, and helpful. Mike our server, is the young son of the owner, Lana. (Who by the way is stunning) He greeted me and sat me at my gorgeous table, with a candle and a fresh pink flower, beautiful water glasses. Just an elegant, intimate table. I was given water and a menu. I looked over the drinks. And the food menu. Another gentleman came over to ask if I'd like a cocktail. I didn't see mojito on their list of drinks. But he did offer to make one, and that it was actually his specialty. Mojito was really good. A little different than what I have had before. But it was refreshing with fresh mint leaves and a lemon slice. Also ordered the strawberry matcha as well, and I'm not an expert on matcha, but the strawberry matcha drink really was good. And the young man, Mike made that drink. Placed my food order of the portobello mushroom ravioli. Which was outstanding. The mushroom had a nice tender earthy flavor. Loved the al dente texture of the pasta.. outstanding meal. The sauce was really good. Towards the end of the night the chef came out and offered chocolate chip cookies! Yes! They were hot out of the oven, soft, hot, chewy, chocolatey cookies, and they were like grandmas cookies! Loved everything. Service- 5 stars easily. Food- 5 stars. clean, light, filling. He was so polite and so helpful and kept checking on us to see if we were doing all right. We went to Lana's Cafe during their grand opening and it was so busy we decided to wait to try out their menu. We returned the next day for breakfast and I'm glad we did!! The indoor atmosphere is relaxing along with plenty of outdoor seating. We were warmly greeted and our service was excellent. We ordered coffees and croissants with avocado toast and a mimosa and a mojito. Our food and drinks presentation is on par with an upscale restaurant. We were fortunate to meet Lana and chat with her for a few moments. This is an authentic Ukrainian cafe. Simply wonderful. We will be going back! read more

My partner and I walked in and asked how seating worked and a waitress told us that we could sit down and then order. We sat down at an open table that had no reserved sign, whereas other tables did have them. We were about to order when another waiter came and told us that our table was actually reserved. The original waitress saw us get kicked out without saying anything. So we just left, feeling as if they could've been more polite in addressing the situation. It was an uncomfortable situation for both us and the people who ended up being seated at the table. We were very excited to try this new place. read more

This Café has a feel exactly like Kyiv! I had the traditional Ukrainian borscht and a refreshing Gira! Every item, and every detail was delicious! It came with a splash of vodka, green onion, and toast, and everything was arranged beautifully on a tray. I also got a cappuccino which was tasty as well! The atmosphere was bustling and welcoming, and all the food was beautiful and delicious! They did forget my spoon because I was seated outside and there were no places set because of the wind, but all I had to do was ask for one. read more
