I checked out Ovenbird for breakfast while visiting Austin. It's a great South Austin spot to grab a coffee, fresh baked goods, and a tasty meal from this scratch kitchen. I did all three. I started out with a Franzbrötchen, a German style cinnamon roll, and a cortado. Both were a great start while waiting for one of the best breakfast sandwiches I've had in a while. The sandwich I chose comes with bacon, beer cheese, fluffy eggs, and Russian dressing on a beautifully toasted Bavarian croissant. I also had to try a side of their duck fat potatoes, fried golden brown with smoked duck fat, whipped confit garlic butter, and fresh thyme. This was an excellent meal with great service, and I would highly recommend checking them out if you're ever in the area. read more

It's seems like a good place for coffee, cocktails and breakfast/brunch. You walk in and order via QR code. Not really my vibe but seemed like it was decently busy. Staff seemed nice. We didn't get much help when we walked in confused as we wanted to sit at the bar but there was no QR codes and we didn't know how that worked. Food tasted great tho! All the stars for the food and drink. The lemon cream cheese danish was light and delicious. The latte was perfect. Unfortunately, the service could've used some improvement. You can order from the counter or you can sit at a table and scan the QR code. I scanned the QR code from the bar and ordered my items. I waited an extremely long time for the coffee and danish to the point where I finally got up and asked somebody if they got my order. That's when they shared with me that their internet went down and they were finally getting all the tickets. They were all standing behind the bar, observing that nobody was getting food or drink and not working on making anything. At some point you'd think that they would've made an announcement or asked us if we ordered something. Taking initiative to let us know the service was down would have gone long way, instead we were all left wondering and waiting. read more

Trekked from the far great north of the Austin suburbs because my friend and I really wanted to go to the "May"azaki themed dinner. The staff were all attentive and nice; the table decor was obviously DIY crafted but it was still cute and creative! The flavor was severely lacking in all of our entrees. The portions were also really small, like, almost Lunchables-sized. My friend ordered Kiki's cake and it was pretty dry. There was not a non-chocolate option, as someone who hates it, which was fine. I was going to give my friend the other dessert but they were able to sub it for a pastry from the counter. The drinks, however, were very well done. I would love to see those as regular staples on the menu. Even though the calcirita was incredibly smoky, like, "coal in your lungs"-type sensation, it was at least still on theme. I would suggest doing cocktail that can be temporarily lit on fire or it comes in a glass dome with a "smoke-like" effect instead if repeating the theme. I will consider coming back one more time for their regular menu but I don't know that it was worth driving down again soon. read more

Very cute restaurant; limited menu; nice pastries. The biscuit was the best thing I ordered. I also ordered a couple of scrambled eggs and one carrot cake pancake. Strangely, the pancake was already cut in to bitesize pieces, piled up in the middle of the plate, and drenched in syrup and icing. Way too sweet for me, but tasty enough that I had a few pieces. Felt like a child whose parents had to cut up my food! haha! I thought $30+ for breakfast was a bit pricey, but I guess that's the way it goes these days..... read more

Enjoyable impeccable environment. We ordered spicy Bloody Mary's. R ordered chicken salad on sourdough and I ordered breakfast 2 eggs over easy, bacon and a biscuit for $3.50 additional. The chicken salad was large and outstanding. My eggs were cooked perfectly. My first bacon slice was undercooked and I should have sent it back. The second slice was cooked perfectly and was delicious. The biscuit was underwhelming. Dry. I can see how biscuits and gravy would be awesome here. The spicy bloody Mary's were excellent. I met a friend here for breakfast this week. It was my first time trying Ovenbird. I immediately found parking in their free lot out front, which is always nice. Gotta love easy parking! I arrived earlier than my friend, so I ordered a latte at the bar and then chose a table to sit at. There are a bunch of tables inside, so it was easy to find one. There were several people working remotely, and the Wi-Fi password (ovenbirdatx!) was displayed in several places. When my friend arrived, we quickly ordered from our table using the QR code there. We both ended up ordering the breakfast sandwich with sausage and pesto. The latte was good, but a little bit bitter. I still finished all of it, though. The breakfast sandwich was tasty and came out quick. It actually was somewhat bigger than I thought it would be! All in all, a decent place to meet a friend for breakfast or to do some remote work. read more

We visited Ovenbird the Monday after the recent ice in Austin. The staff was beyond friendly and the ambiance calming. The London fog on their menu is what drew us in. We ordered the breakfast sandwich, French toast and breakfast plate. The syrup on the French toast was phenomenal..you will eat every last bite. As for the sandwich it had a fresh pesto and sausage to die for with a perfectly cooked egg. The London fog was the star though. Its flavor was packed and every sip a journey. My husband and I decided to go to breakfast at Ovenbird while in the area. We parked, walked in, looked around and chose to sit outside. The Restaurant is bright and big with lots of seating inside and outside. We sat down at a table and there was a little sign with a QR Code that said to scan with your phone and place your order. We looked at the menu and ordered. It was quick and easy. We grabbed some cold water that was set up on a stand where you could get your own. After getting water we sat and waited for our food. After about 10-15 minutes we got our food that was brought out to our table by a kind woman. The Food My husband ordered Hoppel Poppel which is a bowl that has steak, peppers, onions, potatoes, dressing, an egg, and green onion. I tried it and it was good. The steak pieces were a good size. The egg was good. It was sunny side up which is my favorite. The potatoes were thick and soft on the inside while crispy on the outside. The peppers and onions added flavor. I ordered the Chicken Schnitzel Sandwich which has fried chicken, apple slaw, and dijonnaise on a braided bun. It came with a side of Potato Salad. I ordered a side of Bacon with my meal. The Chicken Sandwich was yummy. The chicken itself was tender. The apple slaw in the sandwich added texture and flavor. The Braided bun was soft. It was a really good sandwich. The Potato Salad was different from what I am used to as it was made with Fingerling potatoes but they were really good. I liked that the potatos were a good size and very flavorful. The Bacon was really good. It wasn't crispy, it was thick and soft. It was a savory side. You can definitely tell that all of the food is fresh. Overall it was a pleasant experience. The atmosphere was nice inside and outside, the service was good, and the food was delicious. An extra note we went to eat breakfast at 8:45 AM on a Saturday morning and it wasn't crowded but it may be packed at other times. read more

I got the hoppel poppel here. I didn't get a coffee but kinda wish I tried one. The venue is super cute and it was packed. I was a little underwhelmed by the hoppel poppel. I think it would've been better if they drizzled more sauce of some sort. These hash type dishes are better with sauce otherwise the potatoes make everything a bit dry. The beef was also a little tough and dry as well. I really liked that you can order at the table and pay at the table. All in all, the 3 rating is for the food only. read more

I can't believe it's taken me this long to try such a great place that's practically in my own backyard! The coffee was bold and the perfect sweetness. I got a pfeffernüsse cappuccino since they're one of my favorite cookies, and I was not disappointed. It tasted like the iced-ginger cookie had been liquidied into my cup. The only thing was it was a latte rather than a cappuccino. My friend got the raspberry cheesecake blini's and I got the bacon jam tart. Both menu item's were fabulous and hit the brunch spot! It does get a little crowded, but there is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. You also might have to travel down the lot for parking since a lot of the spaces are reserved for other businesses, but it's definitely worth it! read more

The latke nest tastes solid, but is tiny. Not worth the price. Same thing with the little pfaffernoose cookies, 2 dollars for a cookie the size of a walnut? Never again. The drip coffee was honestly just not good. Their service style is also "seat yourself and order online", so the wait staff just drops the food at your table. Not necessarily a problem but when you have questions you have to like wave down whoever you can find. Once I got ahold of a waitress she was very nice but that doesn't redeem the place. A spacious place to grab breakfast on the weekend south of downtown! They have such intriguing seasonal latte flavors, breakfast sandwiches, tacos, pastries, and more! For Saturday breakfast, I had the Medovic Latte which was sweetened with burnt honey and salted caramel flavors. I was also able to customize a breakfast sandwich with an egg prepared over easy, layered with beer cheese, and all sandwiched between a flaky, salted, crispy layered biscuit. The latte was incredibly sweet, so I was only able to tolerate it through mid-cup. I would definitely come back to try other options! read more

Stopped in for brunch since my friends in the area now. Grabbed a cherry Arnold Palmer and bacon egg taco. The rye tortilla will throw you if you aren't prepared but I really liked the touch. The cherry Arnold Palmer was more like cherry lemonade. It was way too sweet in my opinion. The service was decently quick. They messed up our friends order but quickly brought the fixed blt which was full of thick cut bacon. The feel is fairly casual and easy in and out. This is the CUTEST place to study or have a coffee date! The inside is spacious and there's an outside patio area to sit at too. Inside, there's outlets literally everywhere so I was able to find a spot to sit and do work at. Outside, there's umbrellas to keep you in the shade and it's great. Tried for the first time today. The space is nice, has a casual vibe but the food here definitely is not just average casual breakfast/brunch fare. We came on a Sunday and so their brunch menu was also available. Ordered two cocktails, two coffee drinks, the Hoppel Poppel, a Reuben sandwich, and a shakshuka breakfast taco. The cocktails were both really good (a strawberry marg and a watermelon cocktail, I forget the name) and were a surprisingly great price at only $10 each. The Medovic latte was also delicious, the burnt honey and caramel flavor really comes through. Food was all really top tier. The Hoppel Poppel is a really hearty and satisfying hash of home fries, steak, peppers, onions and an egg on top. I love that their potatoes are properly crispy and not underdone like a lot of breakfast places. The Reuben had really juicy and tender corned beef and the kraut and dressing balanced out the rich beef really well. On par with similar sandwiches I've had in town (ie: Pieous and Mum foods, although I know their thing is pastrami). The Shakshuka breakfast taco was super unique. I love Shakshuka but never had have it in breakfast taco form. The eggs are cooked really well, a nice soft scramble mixed in with spicy tomato sauce served on a super unique marble rye tortilla, which I've never seen anywhere else. I added sausage, which honestly wasn't even necessary. The only caveat I have for this place (which is a minor thing and doesn't deserve taking off a star or anything) is that the service model can be confusing for a first timer like I was. When you walk in there's a walk up counter to order like any coffee shop, but also signs that say "seat yourself and order via QR code". We sat and ordered everything using the code, however we didn't realize (and there's no signage or anything) that indicates that while they will deliver your food to the table, you still have to pick up your drinks and coffees from the bar. Also, coffee and alcoholic drinks come from separate places. So both our coffees and our cocktails were sitting on different counters waiting for awhile before we realized we had to get them ourselves. Not a big deal, but I feel that process could be better communicated. Overall a really excellent spot that I am happy to have finally tried. Even happier that it's in South Austin which can be a little more challenging to find good spots to eat. Very much recommended. read more

I've been here on both weekends and weekdays. Weekends are great because they offer more brunch options, and the outdoor seating is nice if the weather is favorable. However, on weekdays, the menu is quite limited, mostly consisting of pastries and sweets, which are pricey $$ . You order at the counter using a QR code, and they bring the food to your table--that's pretty much the extent of the service. Overall, I find this place more expensive compared to others, and there are many great brunch spots in Austin that are much more affordable. read more

Been here twice and both times everything was better than expected. The breakfast tacos (particularly the sausage and potato ones) are SOOO GOOD. The jalapeño crema is delicious so make sure to add that to the tacos. I think they make their tortilla recipe from scratch, because they are unique and not like regular flour or corn tortillas. Love that they serve the tea in a pot with a mug and also really liked the kale and bean soup which is not pictured here. The only thing I didn't love was the bacon was very thick cut on the BLT so it was a bit dry. I think the mayo to sandwich ratio was a bit off. I ate my sandwich with the jalapeño crema so it was still tasty though and everything else was scrumptious. Also enjoyed the hot chocolate, not tooo sweet and very tasty. read more

I was meeting a friend here for brunch. Neither one of us had been here. There was ample parking. It's a large and seems to be fairly new strip center. There is an outside patio which is dog friendly. It was much too chilly to sit outside today. You wait in line to order but they bring your food to you. There is a bussing station for your dishes but it seemed to be hit or miss whether people actually did it. Someone took our plates but I saw several people bussing their own plates. When we stepped up to order, I noted that the person waiting on us said hello and made solid eye contact. It made me feel quite welcomed. :) I ordered a flat white and my friend got a cold brew. We didn't order any pastry but everything in the case looked great. Skye, my barista, made my coffee perfectly with a pretty little flower on top. Our food was brought out fairly quickly and they looked fantastic. We both became members of the clean plate club. I had the breakfast salad and the only thing I have to comment was that I wished there were a little more of the "good stuff" in my salad. The good stuff being: sweet potato, onions, white beans. The ratio of kale to "good stuff" was a little off. That being said, I loved it so much that I might try and replicate it at home. My friend got biscuits and gravy. It looked amazing and it tasted as good as it looked. :) I will definitely be back and hopefully it will be warm enough soon so that I can bring my cute doggo for some patio time. read more

My new favorite spot in South Austin before the sun goes down, I've been sleeping on Oven Bird and this place is way more than just another coffee shop. They're doing something special down here in South Austin. First off, I had 3 pastries that I cant say enough about. You can tell they use high grade flour and source quality stuff for everything. The menu isn't some tiny board with 3 sandwiches either, they've got options that rival some of the best spots in town.What got me most excited is the space they're creating. The staff actually goes above and beyond and you can tell they're trying to build something bigger than just slinging coffee.Oh and apparently they do drag shows on weekends?? Haven't caught one yet but that sounds awesome and exactly the kind of thing this neighborhood needs. Really rooting for this team to thrive - South Austin needs more spots like this that actually care about what they're doing. Cant wait to visit more once they extend hours of operation. read more

Their London Fog (regular) changed my world! They slightly burn and cook their honey in it and it's to-die-for! Also, their breakfast options are outstanding - good vegetarian options and some vegan as well. The pastries are super fresh and delicious. I find that the staff is always incredibly helpful and knowledgeable about all the items on the menu and the coffee and tea. The ambience of the place is lovely. It's decorated nicely has great artwork displayed and there's lots of great outdoor seating. This is one of my favorite places in Austin! read more

Upon coming to Austin for a visit, I discovered this culinary gem! In my week stay I've been 4 times because the chef is truly gifted. Not just from culinary training, but an inate gift. She understands flavors, baking and old forgotten traditions. Her Pork with spaetzle was just like i had in Germany. Her French toast, made of her own thick cut bread is the best I've ever had. South Austin restaurant with downtown vibes (and prices). Ovenbird is one of my favorite breakfast and lunch restaurants in South Austin. I have ordered seasonally flavored handpies, like s'more's and pumpkin cream cheese, other assorted pastries, salad, breakfast sandwiches, and a scotch egg from here. I have never had a bad meal from Ovenbird, and their coffee with creative house made syrups is excellent too. It is a great place to meet up with friends or to spend a late morning working on your laptop. Depending on what you order, like the Scotch egg, the portions can be small for the price. However, the quality is always high. If you visit for breakfast I recommend trying one of their seasonal coffee beverages and the breakfast sandwich with sausage, Boursin, and pesto.
