I love Europeans, I'm a real big fan of dumplings, and I'm obsessed with Cafes. So naturally I felt compelled to check this establishment out. The dude manning the counter was patient and offered suggestions. It was food with names I had never heard but made with things I like. When he asked if the topping of sour cream and sriracha sauce was ok.. I shed a tear and said YA vdoma. And indeed I felt at home with all three dishes I tried. Top it all with cilantro add a glob of hot sauce hell yeah. We don't come down to the San Antonio area often and whenever we do, we always end up grabbing food at the same restaurant. This time we wanted to try something different. I've had this place bookmarked a while ago for the next time we were in town so of course we had to check it out this time. I want to start off by saying this is a quaint little place and can easily be missed since it's sandwiched between a sushi place and a larger afghan restaurant. They have tables ifront if people prefer to sit outside. For the food itself, I just got to say wow, it was truly incredible. The decor was festive with good lighting. The two servers were friendly. We ordered lamb dumplings. My daughter ordered water, and I opted for the kompot. The dumplings were steamed (I prefer them prepared in a skillet). The size of the dumplings was about that of tortellini. There were twelve little dumplings in the cup that were brought out. Even steamed, they did have good flavor. I did grumble about each tiny dumpling costing about $1.25 each. The compote was good, but it reminded me of watered down sangria. I was at the Botanical Gardens again and wanted to stop somewhere on the way home to eat dinner. I remembered seeing that this restaurant was right next door to the Japanese restaurant I ate at yesterday. I had gone home and looked it up on Google. It sounded like a place I needed to try. I have NEVER eaten Ukrainian food before. I had heard of borscht, but thought it was a soup made with beats. Evidently, that is only one version of it. The bowl of borscht that was served to me was more of a cabbage soup. I cringe saying that, because it was so much more than just cabbage soup. It was amazingly flavorful. I had shreds of cabbage and chunks of chicken in the savory red colored broth. I could taste tomatoes and carrots, but didn't see any. If they were in it they were tiny. It also had strong hints of garlic and onion. There was about a tablespoon of sour cream in the center of the bowl. I wasn't sure what I was supposed to do with that, so I just stirred it in. This is probably the best soup I have ever had in a restaurant. It was the kind that you would love to dip a loaf of really hard crusty bread in on a really cold day. I also ordered another dish called Vareniki. I had no idea what that was, but decided to be adventurous. I read the description on the menu and didn't see anything I wouldn't eat. (Who am I kidding, other than mangoes that I can't eat for allergy reasons, there is nothing on God's earth I won't eat.) When it came to the table, it was a small ceramic pot filled with stuffed dumplings shaped like pot stickers. The dough was thick and ooey-gooey delicious. The filling was mashed potatoes. They were covered in what tasted like a mix of onion and mushroom gravies. There were chunks of the mushroom in it. I didn't count the dumplings, but there were more than enough in there to satisfy me. Talk about comfort food! There was a man behind the counter who took my order. Later, another man who could have passed for his brother brought my food out. There was also a woman in the kitchen. I could hear all three of them speaking some language I don't understand. That tells me that this must be fairly authentic Ukrainian food. Of course, I can't really say. I can say that the cafe was clean, had a really charming decor, and friendly staff members. I know that I will be back to try the other things on their menu. It may not be right away. As I was leaving, I noticed an Afghan restaurant right next door. I haven't had Afghan food before either. A few friends came over and we decided to do some take out from here. We ordered quite a few things, but my wife and I had the chicken dumplings, Borsh, Piroshki, and Chebureki. The food was still very hot when we got it home (about a 10 minute drive). The dumplings were stuffed and very flavorful. The Borsh was excellent! The broth in it had an incredible depth of flavor, the only thing we agree was we wished there was more chicken in our portion. The Piroshki was probably the favorite all around. The bread was incredibly soft and the stuffing was very flavorful as well. The Chebureki was very tasty, a bit more flaky than expected, but very good. Their Instagram is really what caught me because everything looks so delicious. I got Borsch with Pampushka and omg.... this soup could make me cryyyy it was SO GOOD. It might be some of the best soup I've ever had. If I'm ever sick, this is the soup that would revive me lol. And the pampushka was so soft, moist, and fresh. Some of the best bread I've tasted. Wow. Found European Dumpling Cafe on Yelp for a late lunch. My husband is Polish so we thought it may be nice to give it a try. I've never had Borsh or baked Pierogi before but my husband has had both. We both thought everything was delicious. The Borsh had a very nice flavored broth. It came out at a perfect for my husband but I like my soups very hot (temperature-wise). The staff were very responsive and heated it up to my preference. Both my husband and I drank every last drop of the soup. I was surprised since my husband typically eats the meats and vegetables in soups and leaves the broth behind. Not today, he almost licked the bowl. He loves it! The Piroshski (baked Pierogi) were lightly crispy on the outside but soft and fluffy on the inside. Very nice texture and tasty. Ordered lamb dumplings, borsch, chicken skewer with cabbage slaw, pirozhki, and Nepoleon cake. Borsch is like a cabbage chicken soup, that's a little spicy. It's flavorful and homey. Lamb dumplings are pretty good, but I couldn't enjoy the other items. In both the pirozhki and the nepoleon cake, I found black hair. A long one, at least 6 inches, in the pirozhki and a 1 inch one in the cake. The chicken skewers reminded me of teriyaki and the slaw was lack luster. Overall, I will not be returning. Also, if you're ordering out, just know that the soup will soak through the paper bowl they pack it in. Update- I didn't mention the hairs in person as this order was through Uber Eats. My delivery driver had 1/4 inch of hair, so I doubt it's his. I'm very disappointed in this order as it was my old meal in San Antonio. Sure, I believe they wear hair nets, but someone had hair on their clothes or gloves because there was definitely 2 strands of hair in my order. And it's not like it fell in because I had to tear the pirozhki breading completely apart to get the entire hair. They were packed nicely in a plastic round container, which was perfect for them. They had a little garnish on top of cilantro and sour cream and some broth in the bottom of the container. Love this little food truck! Tucked in the parking lot by the big Alamo Fireworks in Potranco is a few trucks. Not to be confused with the Area 51 food trucks! It's in a different lot completely. This truck is owned by a nice family. They told us a bit about their bg as we waited for our food. They have family that they're hosting that are refugees from Ukraine. They even brought us a sample of their fruit juice concoction. I forge the name but it was so refreshing and different from anything we've tried. So I think we'll have to get a full order next time. We had the Potato Stuffed Pierogi, Dumplings with Garlic and Sour Cream, & Bosrcht soup. The pierogis are where it's at! They're crispy and buttery like the best crust you can get on a Little Caesars pizza. You know what I mean, but the whole piergoi tastes like that. It's a crisp but soft texture that is to die for.
