We've been through the whole process of getting quotes and browsing through Yelp for contractors and I can definitely say that the next time we have a landscaping project come up, we're going straight to Jeff. We received 5 estimates for our backyard - from companies large and small - and Jeff was the only one who actually listened to what we wanted and then gave thoughtful suggestions based on his expertise and actually had a vision for the space. Nearly every other company asked what we wanted but never asked any follow up questions or showed any interest in providing an expert opinion. That would be fine if I was a landscape architect and a botanist but... I'm not!! Jeff is extremely valuable not only for the high quality work that he and his team does, but for the knowledge and expertise that he brings to the table, and the fact that he actually CARES. Early on in the estimate process I mentioned to Jeff that we recently had a baby and that part of my motivation for updating our backyard was to make the space more functional as a fun play space for our son as he grows up. Jeff constantly tweaked the design and approach to accommodate this ultimate goal for the space. He purposefully laid out the plants and trees so that our son could run through the landscape once it grows in (which is tricky because the hillside is steep), he brought in extra boulders to give him something to climb up on and jump off of, and consciously steered us away from any poisonous or dangerous plants. Now, with the design that Jeff laid out, we are so so excited to see our son enjoy the backyard for years to come!! I should also mention that I have strong opinions when it comes to the design and layout of our home which made Jeff's approach even more impressive. Great design and installation of tasteful spotlights, mushroom lights, and some custom lights in the paver patterns. The Black Diamond team workers were fast, clean, organized, courteous, and their craftsmanship was excellent and the finished front of the house was a very custom and professional job. They were also flexible, which is probably most important. It now has a very modern, Tuscan look. What a transformation from cracked concrete! They also carved out a lovely hillside with custom stairs, a spacious terrace, and game trails perfect for enjoying the view. LEI works with YesPlease.Garden (YPG) who managed the design process and Fresh Coat Restoration who completed the new fence. The partnerships were well integrated and it felt like working with a single team. See my Google Maps review for more on YPG. We are very happy with our project and would recommend LEI because they were professional, courteous, reliable, and provided clear and upfront pricing. Documenting decisions in writing proved helpful for keeping everyone on the same page. Any problems we had were resolved fairly, such as correcting the direction of our stairs. Aaron is a man of his word but prefers to conduct most of his business through texting. We first contacted LEI and they promptly scheduled a time to visit our property with YPG to see what was possible within the budget we set out. We completed the design with YPG and LEI scheduled a time for the project demolition. A later approximate time for planting was set, but that was dependent on the availability of the various plants we had selected. Everything scoped in the design was completed within the budget and any add-ons we later requested were priced separately and fairly.

The quality of the work was excellent throughout. The paver patio, carport, and front entry all turned out beautifully, and the plants, irrigation, and lighting were installed with great care. We were especially impressed by the rock and pebble work, particularly the dry creek and front mow strip. The mix of stone sizes gave everything a natural, detailed, and polished look that really elevated the final result. Aaron also has a strong eye for detail. Randy was such a pleasure to work with as I juggled our HOA approval process and requirements in applying for an EBMUD lawn conversion rebate. He managed through fixing our broken water pipes, help in selecting plants, keeping to the plan/vision we had, while staying in budget. The job took three and a half days from start to finish. We love it! Rebate approved. Happy customer.

I have mixed feelings about the work that was done. We hired him to put in concrete in the backyard…read moreof our new build and was relying on his expertise as to what would be the best set up. He came by and took initial measurements and said he would provide drawings of what he would do. I never received the drawings. I don't know why he decided to move the drains out to the sides instead of leaving them in the middle. As you can see in the pictures, now there's areas where water pools where if there was a drain there wouldn't be an issue. I'm also surprised he didn't put a drain where the pipe for the water tank comes out, which is causing discoloration. These are things that I expected an expert to know about and to provide upfront. Now that the concrete is put in it's too late to have the drains installed in the middle. Btw moving the drains to the sides was an extra $1k. We also added the concrete path to the front of the house, and when he did that he cut the water pipe so now there's a dead patch. He didn't consult with us prior and that was not something that was agreed upon. Now comes the payments. He asks for payments in installments up front. Reason being that he said he needs to pay for the materials and his workers. I have always heard that you should never pay and should wait until work is done, but he seemed trustworthy and it was in installments so I didn't have too much of a problem with that. These were paid via checks. When it came time to pour the concrete, I was told it would be a certain amount and I provided payment directly to the concrete company. Later on after it was done, I was overcharged and I asked him to call them to verify and ask why the difference. He never followed up with them. Luckily this was through my credit card so I was able to submit a dispute. When we gave him the final check, there were some remaining items that he still had to take care of before the project was completed. I had to keep texting him to ask when he would be back to finish the job. It took weeks since he kept pushing his schedule out. My overall sentiment is that this was just an OK result. I do appreciate that him and his team worked during the summer through the 100 degree weather to get this done. But at the same time, I'm not too happy with the drainage system that they did.
