The food here is disgusting. They gave us spoiled and rotten food. When we asked the waitress what was wrong with the food she said that was normal. She took back our food and she only removed the bad food and bring back the same dish. It was so bad that I threw up at the restaurant and had a stomach ache the whole weekend. Do not come here! As a small town girl this was the first Ethopian restaurant I visited and needless to say I am in love. We frequent this restaurant about 3-4 times a year for the past 4 years. It is as close as it comes for us to a regular place for us, our wandering pallets keep us from frequenting any restaurant too much. I always order the vegetarian combination all are delicious but my favorites include the Yatakilt Wot, which are potatoes carrots and string beans and the Kik Alicha yellow split peas. it says it only comes with a few dishes but really it is 7 or more most. recently they added one that may have been beets YUM! Ben most recently got Gomen Besiga which was good. he gets something different most times and it is always good. If there are enough people he will get the combination. I had a birthday dinner with 12+ friends at the restaurant. It was the right type of food, GREAT for sharing and reasonably priced. not to mention with a coupon from restaurant.com we ate a lot. It was not conducive to conversation among all of us however everyone had a great time. The service is very laid back. So this review is overdue (I came in March) but wanted to give my two cents on this place. When I came here, I had never eaten Ethiopian food before so I didn't really know what to expect. I came here with a friend of mine who's Ethiopian--he said that one of his friends recommending this place. When we walked in, I immediately smelled incense (or something like incense) burning and there was a waitress standing further in the restaurant who motioned with her hand for us to come to her. I thought that was weird--shouldn't the waitress/hostess come to you? Perhaps it's a cultural thing. Anyway, we were seated and my friend picked the food items: kitfo and beef tibbs. I enjoyed the beef tibbs--it came out in something clay pot-like with a flame underneath to keep it hot. I'm not a fan of kitfo but I think it's more to do with the fact that it was prepared medium rare. I'll eat steak medium well but that's about as far as it goes. My friend told me that kitfo is normally prepared raw which made me nervous so he had them prepare it medium rare, but that still made me nervous (I don't have that many sick days...lol). I only had a bite or two and that was it. Clearly, I wasn't brave enough for kitfo. Also, we were there for the coffee ceremony (burning incense is a part of it) and got to try freshly brewed coffee which was cool. We also had spiced tea--nothing real memorable about it. My friend really liked the food but I wished that he picked some vegetables. I would like to try them again but instead of the meat, I would get the veggie platter. read more

Very good food. Probably the best misir wot I've ever eaten. The green salad was very fresh and crisp. Beef tibs, cooked perfectly. I'm not in MD very often so I'm not sure if I'd become a regular here, but the food is delicious. Langano's is wonderful. The staff is attentive, friendly, and quick. It's a small place (they have a second larger room for events, it seems), but with great atmosphere. You sit down and feel comfortable right away. The best part, of course, is the food. It's consistently the best Ethiopian food in the area. The prices are much better than the restaurants in town, particularly the places in or near Adams Morgan. We've tried a range of things now after a series of visits and haven't found a weak item on the menu. Highly recommend! read more

Decent. I walked in once with a friend during live music; I had tea, he had a beer. (I don't recall him liking the beer especially much; me, my tea was nothing authentically unique or special, but it wasn't entirely atrocious, either.) The music was cute: the performer was smiling and the patrons were dancing or singing along, or simply smiling from their seats; everyone seemed to be having a good time. I've walked past a few times and peeked in; never have I been particularly drawn towards joining the festivities. (A lot of natives seem to enjoy the place, though, which is refreshing -- if it weren't any good, I imagine they wouldn't bother. It's not as if there aren't other Ethiopian restaurants and markets down the street.) I went recently for lunch during the week. Again I ordered tea, and again it was nothing special: a hot translucent tea-colored liquid was delivered in a glass mug (I liked the mug) along with a Lipton tea bag; I gathered the liquid was pre-spiced in some sort of traditional Ethiopian manner to go along with the standard black tea? Anyway, at least giving me a tea bag meant I could make the tea as strong as I wanted. Our server was very sweet and very accommodating to our questions and requests. My mother ordered a dish that is described as containing raw ground beef, yet she requested it be cooked; and, I suppose I half-expected our server to half-express some hesitation, some sort of appalled shock at having someone try to mess with your authentic traditional dish, yet there wasn't the slightest indication that such a request was absurd or out of the ordinary. (I did not expect our server to react like this based on her character, but I must have had some idea that an unintentional reaction might be evident...as perhaps one might experience if ordering a ham and cheese sandwhich served on a blueberry bagel with cookies 'n' cream cream cheese from a traditional bagel shop....anyway, I imagine you get what I mean.) The food: My mom's food she said was good, but the meat was too spicy for her. (Now she knows for next time.) (Our server had asked if she liked spicy food, and my mother said yes; so, now YOU know: even with a warning, it can still take you by surprise.) I ordered a combo plate of various vegetarian dishes: lentils and potatoes and tomato-based purees. Both of our lunches were served on huuuuuge plates atop a large round injera along with a basket of 3 or 4 rolled-up injera. I liked my food just fine and had to take at least half of it home to finish later (which I did -- yum!). My mom's portion was also big enough to take home for a second meal (which my father ate and enjoyed). Atmosphere / ambiance: Not awful, but not amazing, either. Cool mural painted above the bar. Would enjoy more color, better lighting, more effort put into decor. We sat next to the window, covered by normal vertical blinds (slanted to let in some light) and a bit dirty. I think they must have taken notice of the unfavorable comments about their service , because yesterday I had probably the best service I've had in an Ethiopian restaurant. They were very attentive and friendly. The place is very nice inside, not too noisy, with a spacious interior. The restroom was minimalistic but okay when I was in there. The food was only average though: my mom had lamb which was overcooked and a little tough (however, the dish was supposed to be "rare" lamb and my mom did ask for it to be medium). I had the veggie combo platter, of the 5 samples given, I only really liked 2, the shiro and the greens. The others were underseasoned or extremely hot/spicy. The food is average, and the staff mistreat their customers of other origin. By other I mean non Ethiopian. They have a very colonial mindset; the white customers always receive preferential treatment. In fact, white customers always receive the smiles and their food first. We've been trying out all of the local Ethiopian restaurants (and there are a lot!), but we keep coming back to Langano. It's the cheapest place we've found, but it's also reliably good. Whether you're looking for vegetarian or meat-laden dishes, they always deliver. We usually hit Langano for dinner. Food is served family-style on large rounds of injera (a crepe-like pancake bread used to pick up the food). The vegetarian sampler is a must, very delicious and almost certainly the biggest bargain on the menu. You'll get several different dishes with lentils, peas, cabbage, greens, carrots, potatoes, etc., all well-seasoned and served with a spicy oil-and-vinegar topped salad. For meat dishes, they offer a variety of beef, lamb, and chicken dishes. If you're feeling brave, try the kitfo - this seasoned, buttery, lightly warmed raw beef is amazing. They always ask to make sure you know you're ordering raw meat, and you can choose to cook it to any level of doneness. We do love it raw! If you order something on the menu that they think you won't like, they will make suggestions. It's good customer service. They are usually good about coming to the table to replenish injera, water, napkins, etc. The tastiest part of the meal is the injera under all of the dishes, which has soaked up the yummy juices of everything you ate. Don't leave that last bit of injera behind! At lunchtime, Langano features special bargain-priced meals - a break on their already rock-bottom prices. And they've just recently added breakfast hours! We visited recently and ate breakfast, which included a tasty scrambled egg dish, a meat-and-injera mixture, seasoned fava beans, and some interesting grain-based dishes that were tasty but difficult to pick up with the injera. A very unique breakfast experience! Langano becomes a "nightclub" at some point in the evening, which is why they are open for hours after other Silver Spring restaurants have closed. Many nights feature live entertainment, often some crazy synthesizer stylings of vaguely recognizable pop songs and funky Ethiopian music. Both the recorded and live music can be a bit overwhelmingly loud at times, and the lights get turned down low. Don't expect to clearly see your food or be able to hear your date after 10PM. Just groove to the synth and stuff your face with injera. read more

This is my favorite Ethiopian restaurant in all of DC. I lived in Silver Spring for a bit and ate here fairly often. After moving to DC, I've eaten at a bunch of Ethiopian and Eritrean spots here for years, and I've found some good ones, but I still haven't found a place I like as much as Langano. The food is always incredible. Service is always good, sometimes a bit slow, but that doesn't bother me. Really good coffee. Love the lighting and vibe and the live music. Definitely go. read more

Langano seems to run better when the owner is around. The owner needs to make sure his place runs if he is around or not. His employees need more training. Tonight, I went to the place around 9:15 PM. I was sitting close to the bar adjusent to the entrance. Almost for 20 min. no one acknowledged me. Then, I had to stop one of the waitress to serve me. She did not apologize nor did care what I wanted to order. Simply, she said, "I thought you have Been served." I have asked if I could get a dark beer, specifically, Becks. Again, after 5 min. She showed up and told me they are sold out. Then I have requested a regular Becks. In 85 degree weather, she brought one from outside which was as warm as a cup of tea. I really do not know why she did that. I simply walked out from the place and I called my friends to meet me somewhere else. We canceled our dinner and decided to meet some other time. I suggest, his waitresses to get better training. It may not cost him money. Simply they can watch the waitresses from next door, a place called Lucy. read more

I ordered take out and got terribly sick. The quality of the meat looked and tasted old. We ordered kitfo, tibs and, Alecia wot for the kids. The next day we all had food poisoning. After going to the hospital, I called and asked to speak with the manager which they said was not there. The lady asked if there was something she could help me with and I explained the situation, she simply said "oh sorry, feel better". I asked her to take down my information and have the manager call me back, it's been almost 2 weeks and I'm still waiting for that call. I work in the food industry and food poisoning is something we take very seriously, especially where there are young children involved. I used to eat here all of the time years ago and it never disappointed. The place has now become some sort of a club and the quality has gone way down. With all of the new great Ethiopian restaurants around I would not recommend this place to anyone. Of course, unless you want to take the risk of getting food poisoning and miss days out of work. read more

Fun place to visit! The staff is really friendly and so are the customers. The only reason I'm giving them a 2 star is that at the end of the night I could no longer get a drink... but other, and I'm guessing regulars, people got several more drinks after I was closed out. Also, as probably the only white person there, every time I went anywhere (bathroom or to smoke) I was chased down to close my bill. Even the other smokers were amazed that the head bartender was looking for me after 30 seconds of me being outside. A great place if you have thick skin. read more

This is probably the restaurant that really (I mean really) made me fall in love with Ethiopian food. We generally order the filet mignon beef tibs (sometimes lamb) and the veggie platter and it's plenty of food for two people. We always bring some home and have lunch for two the next day. Everything is very fresh and high quality. Try the Ethiopian beer--however, they sometimes run out. The honey wine is a nice treat too (it is sweet as the name suggests but very different from your typical sweet white wine). My husband and I have tried many Ethiopian places in Silver Spring and DC and this is hands down the best one (authentic, tasty, and non-greasy food, clientele is mainly Ethiopian or of other African background unlike other places that cater to tourists etc). Service can be a bit spotty, so hence the 4 stars instead of 5. read more

I have tried Ethiopian food in a number of places, and Langano beat other places by far. Don't expect anything special in terms of decor or ambiance. Do expect a generous portions of excellent food! It looks like the place is also favored by local Ethiopian community, which in my experience is a good indicator of the food quality; I am always suspicious of ethnic joints that is avoided by people of the same ethnicity.
