Since a number of our friends have been to this establishment and left great reviews, I really wanted to do the same. I really wanted to. However, I'm struggling to do so. It started with our table not being ready yet, no worries there, we understand. The host took us to a lovely little alcove and sat the four of us down and we were quickly approached by the Sommelier. This establishment obviously takes their wine very seriously, almost to the point of being pretentious. But not all of us are wine drinkers. Due to an allergy to sulfites. When we looked at the list of available mixed drinks, nothing really appealed... So my wife asked for a simple vodka and tonic. She was informed that that was not one of the "APPROVED" drinks that they offered. What !?! They have vodka, they have tonic... Why can't we get what we want? When my friend requested an IPA he was informed that IPAs don't pair well with the food offerings, consequently, they do not have that option. Frankly, shouldn't that be HIS decision what he feels pairs with HIS palette and not the restaurants? Just a bit pretentious. Did I mention I really wanted to write a great review? So we sucked it up and ordered two glasses of overpriced white wine ($18 for a glass of mediocre wine) and two of the "approved" drinks offered. At this point, I'd like to state that the service we received other than the initial pretension exhibited by the wine Sommelier, was amazing. Our waiter was attentive and well trained and the support staff made sure that our water glasses were filled. Thankfully, I can leave a great review with regards to them. Now to the food... the dumpling sampler was delicious. The four of us ordered the ribs, the duck, the beef and I ordered the Dan Dan noodles. Honestly, almost all of the dishes were deliciously prepared, albeit a bit modest on the quantity of food presented. Our waiter initially suggested that these could be shared... I'm not sure how we would do that with the smaller plates offered as entrées. My noodles, however, came out as a solid chunk of over microwaved noodles, the kind that you get if you forget to take your Costco ramen out of the microwave in time. It was a solid block of dried out noodles. I was about to call our waiter over and ask that they give it another shot. When out of the corner of my eye I saw my wife giving me "the look", don't make it a thing her eyes said to me. So I took my chopsticks and pried the noodles apart, and tried to mix them with the sauce as best as I could. So to summarize; *A little too pretentious on the whole drink thing. I think they're trying too hard. *Service was great *Three out of four entrees were a success * $17 for a mixed drink is pricey but doable, $18 for mediocre wine not so much. As I mentioned, I really wanted to leave a good review... sadly other than the waiter and the support staff I find it difficult to do. Thank you

One Pot is excellent, the food is high quality, the decor is exceptional and the experience is all kinds of fun. Prices are reasonable, $20 at lunch and $30 at dinner for all you can eat. Service is great, the food comes out quickly and they pay attention to the little things, clearing extra dishes, replacing the grill cover, refilling the fluid in the hot pot. If you haven't done this before the food comes out raw and you cook it yourself at the table either on the grill in the center of the table or in the boiling pot in front of you. Cooking the food can have a bit of a learning curve and different food can be easier or harder to get right, but even so most of the food comes out great. Some of the proteins come out premarinated, others can be enhanced with the sauces, oils and seasonings at the back bar area. The protein choices include meats, chicken and seafood, there are a nice variety of vegetables, rice and in the hot pot noodles and various dumplings. I really need to call out the decor; One Pot has a great Korean pop art style that is amazing. My friend Dan did a trip to Korea this spring and he said that it really reminded him of being in Korean. If you want to have a great high protein meal that is fun and a bit of an adventure I would highly recommend giving One Pot a try. Previous review: I finally got to try One Pot for a Friday lunch and boy did I enjoy myself. One Pot is located in Coventry Village in a free standing building next to the parking garage. From the outside One Pot looks upscale and conservative, that changes as soon as you walk in the door, the front alcove has a giant silver spaceman and multicolor bears plus plenty of chrome. Inside you get even more of the Pop art bears along with other great décor touches; this would be a great stop before or after going to the Murakami exhibit at the Art Museum. One Pot offers a choice of either all you can eat Korean BBQ or Hot Pot. The menu is clear and allows you to choose what you want with pictures to assist. I choose the BBQ even though I was a bit limited with only the fish, seafood and vegetables. The tables are all set up with receptacles for the hot pots in front of each seat and a grill in the middle of the table. Ordering was easy and they also have QR codes that allow you to order directly on your phone. The food comes out incredibly quickly, of course no cooking is necessary to slow things down. The grill on my table took a bit of time to get heated up, but once it did I was ready to go. The actual cooking is fun and easy, you place your food on the grill, keep an eye on it, flip it over and when ready you take it off and eat the fresh, hot food. I stuck mainly to the proteins: garlic shrimp, giant shrimp, spicy calamari, spicy fish and mussels. I did also get some eggplant, oyster mushrooms, sweet potato and white rice. There are a couple of little buffets with sauces, toppings, kim chi and some daikon and jalapenos. I went through quite a bit of shrimp, calamari and fish all of which were great. Among the best were the garlic shrimp, the spicy calamari, the jumbo shrimp, eggplant and mushroom. A couple of things to note, the giant shrimp were excellent, but they do come still in the shell and with the head on, not a big deal for me, but some people could be grossed out; I could not get the sweet potato to cook properly on the grill, just a bit disappointing. As a Korean place I was also a bit disappointed that the banchan (side dish) selection was so limited, but that is just nit picking. I do have to shout out the service, it was attentive and helpful, without being rushed. One Pot is a great experience and it is great to go to an AYCE place and have delicious high-quality food yet still not feeling overstuffed. The décor is outstanding, the menu is clear and concise. Despite the grills in the table I never felt overheated or had any issue with smoke from the food cooking. Really well thought out all the way around. While not inexpensive One Pot is a good value for what you get. I will be going back both to try the hot pot selection and to do the Korean BBQ again. This is your place on the East Side if you want some great Korean BBQ or just feel like protein loading. Get yourself to Coventry and enjoy.

It won't be by regular takeout destination. AMBIANCE: China Gate is a takeout only place. The restaurant is very small and not so clean. Half of the restaurant and seating is obstructed by random boxes and storage. There are three tiny tables inside. The chairs and tables are affixed to each other with little room between the two. It's impossible to sit comfortably. It was very uncomfortable to even sit and wait for takeout. Dining in is not a good option. FOOD: The menu is multi-page containing options like combo plates, soups, fried rice, lo mein, and other familiar favorites. Spicy dishes are clearly denoted in the menu. There is a pink sheet with up charges for items - oil, soy sauce, fortune cookies, and others. I ordered Sesame Seed Chicken Combo Plate ($14) and Wonton Soup ($6.50). There were plenty of problems with my order. The main one being it wasn't quite my order. Sesame Seed Chicken Combo Plate comes with pork fried rice and egg roll. My order came with small white rice, no egg roll. There was a generous portion of chicken (container full) but it was awful. It was not a cohesive dish. Some pieces were very dry, others too soggy. Some were sweet, others a bit sour. The chicken was not evenly coated in sesame seed and honey sauce. So it was essentially half sauced. The sauce tasted like honey from honey bear container that was extremely diluted. The sesame seeds tasted slightly burned. The entire dish was bland - not sweet, not salty, nothing. Won Ton soup was not good. The broth was considerably darker than similar soup at other places. There was too much onion. The won tons had a lot of dough and teeny tiny meat pieces inside. Single pieces of meat were nice but they were too fatty. Overall, the soup was too concentrated/dark soup base but also lacking flavor. SERVICE: Service was chaotic. I walked in to place an order in person. The employee took orders of multiple people calling in before acknowledging me. I was standing right in front of her. She was raising her voice at customers on the phone and almost arguing about what the orders contained. I will say that there were lots of questions asked to ensure that the orders were right on the phone. Average wait time provided was 10-15 minutes. My order was up very quickly. Overall, I found service to be very unwelcoming and too animated. SOUVENIRS: Cute glass and ceramic Chinese horoscope figurines are available at the counter. It is unclear if they are for sale, no prices are listed on them. PARKING: Large parking lot is available at this plaza. Plenty of places to park. I was pretty disappointed with my visit. I didn't get the right order. My order was not tasty at all. I'll sound silly, but after tasting my meal, I strongly considered immediately going to another Chinese restaurant for another takeout. I will not be returning because no part of my visit was satisfying.

Lao Sze Chuan Pinecrest - A Memorable Dining Experience I had the pleasure of dining at Lao Sze Chuan Pinecrest with friends, and from start to finish, it was one of the best restaurant experiences I've had in a long time. This upscale, pristine Asian restaurant delivers not only incredible food but also top-tier service. The highlight of the evening was our server, Josh Y. - hands down the best server I've ever had in a very long time. He was warm, attentive, and full of great recommendations that elevated our meal. It's rare to find someone so in tune with both the menu and the customer experience. We had a 4:30 PM reservation and were seated right on time. We began with a delicious round of appetizers including a crispy scallion pancake, a variety of dumplings, and a standout spicy Chao Shau - beautifully presented and full of flavor. For entrees, I ordered the prime beef with Shishito peppers, which was tender and flavorful. My friends enjoyed the Kung Bao shrimp and a rich, aromatic duck and black truffle fried rice, which Josh had recommended - and it absolutely delivered. A special touch was when the owner personally stopped by our table to check in on our experience and chat with us for a bit. It made us feel genuinely welcomed and valued. We ended the evening on a sweet note with their crispy rice in brown sugar sauce - imagine an Asian twist on a churro. Me and my husband had dined in last night and we had a amazing experience. We had the Xiao long biao and the Tony's three chili chicken with the Sze chaun string beans and my server Christian along with the whole staff did a fantastic job. Even though he had a extremely huge party and that can be very demanding in itself. The ambiance of the restaurant is a mood in itself it truly makes you feel like you stepped into china town. My friend said that they might have done some remodeling and might be "off line." Their website and my phone call confirmed that they were open for business. Thus, going here was then easily agreed upon. I don't write too many reviews for Chinese restaurants. That said, allow me to be a jerk and bring up some dynamics I see - not so much with Asian food - but with consumers of Asian food. In the tech suburbs on Portland's west side, I have been in eateries where WASPy and "boring as watching paint dry" techies come in for a take-out order of lunch. These same guys sing the praises for Thai and Indian food, which they order with a high spice quotient, and I wonder if it's to counterbalance their lack of personal pep. I have eaten spicy food from these regions on a few occasions that I ordered in "dumbed down" form, my nose ran the entire time, and I wound up later going home sick. Back to King Wah. I'm open to ethnically diverse food. It just cannot be spicy. King Wah serves up the broad spectrum of Cantonese staples that Americans often choose and love. They might offer some menu items beyond Cantonese ones. Spicy items on the menu are clearly identified with the "hot pepper" icon. For me, ordering in a Chinese restaurant is a no-brainer. Is it going to be cashew chicken, lemon chicken, or beef broccoli? I had the cashew chicken. My friend ordered one of the fish entrees. We sampled each other's food and both dishes received the nod of approval. I liked my cashew chicken because it was a very satisfying larger portion that was also very tasty. The interior is clean and features some of the decor you may often see in Chinese restaurants. The service was excellent - low key, polite, and informative. Because the fried rice is "sold" separately, the overall tab might be a tad higher, but not by much. I will now go off on another tangent. I ponder some strange angles to situations. It's obvious that the management and most of the staff at King Wah might hail from China. I wonder what it must be like to come to the U.S., open a restaurant in a catchment area that is mostly non-ethnic Americans, and become the greatest thing since sliced bread to your customer base. I'm just trying to process their perceptions and acclimation along a trek that non-ethnic Americans will never experience. (For what it's worth, my foreign-born parents certainly went through this, albeit not as restauranteurs.) It's all good because it happens to every immigrant group that opens up what become popular restaurants in the U.S. and Canada and it's an interesting thing to watch unfold ... at least to me. Again, I don't partake in this cuisine often, but when I'm ready to go, I'm ready! I'm not giving this restaurant 5 stars because I was hoping that that dollop of fried rice would have come with the meal, but King Wah is clearly a 4 star experience and I would recommend it highly to aficionados of more mainstream Cantonese Chinese cuisine.

Food was ready when I arrived, and the woman at the bar who handled the takeout orders was pleasant. The problem was the food itself. My son enjoyed his Orange Chicken, and the crab Rangoon and egg rolls were good. However, my General Tso's chicken was not very good at all. Mostly breading, and what chicken existed was overcooked and tough. I will not be ordering that dish again from here. I'll try another one of my favorites next time, but I can make better General Tso's at home using my air fryer.

Recently went here for dinner…read more I ordered the Chang Mai noodles and completely had my socks knocked off. The dish was a wonderful mix of flavors bright, spicy, fresh, acidic yet rich. The lady running the place was very nice and you can tell she is proud of her food and culture. Place was completely empty on the inside around 6:30pm, which was somewhat surprising for me. It seems most people do takeout there... anyway, its a true 10/10 and I really recommend giving them the business.

Always a good thing. The food, however, was a mixed bag. First, I ordered beef and snow peas (I asked for it to be spicy), and the dish was among the best I've had in a long time. The peas were crunchy; the beef was melty; and the sauce was rich -- and spicy, just as I requested. Because I don't eat a ton, I ordered the upgrade (to fried rice, wonton soup and an egg roll) to share. Meh. The broth was nice, but there really weren't wontons in it. Rather, they were ribbons of way overcooked pasta. Not a deal-breaker, but nothing memorable. The egg roll was the typical freezer-to-fryer variety. Not terrible, but hardly plump and definitely not rolled in-house like the good ol' days. Finally, the fried rice is missing something. Not only do I believe that it was never cooked in a wok, but it also had a scant flavor of sesame oil and little else. I'm not usually one to tell people how to do their business. This time is different though, since I am not the only one to mention the bland 'fried' rice here. Use some soy sauce. Use the wok -- and not the microwave. And perhaps, use an egg and a little garlic. But hey! These guys have been in business for a minute, so we 'fried' rice detractors must be in the minority. All of that to say, this place does an outstanding job with the beef and snow peas. But next time -- if there is a next time (I live in Houston) -- I'll ask for the steamed rice and dress it myself.
