I just recently moved to the area and was looking for a new thai place to try out. We came here late (9pm) and ordered: - spring rolls: awesome!! the sauce was great, the ingredients were fresh (we had the vegetarian version, no prawns) and they had a nice assortment of veggies, not just the basics. - chicken pad kee mao: a spicy noodle dish, very good - vegetarian thai red curry (kang dang): a very good red curry, a little on the sweet side, but filled with the largest assortment of veggies I've found at any place, zucchini, carrots, eggplant, mushrooms... All in all a very solid meal, and the spring rolls were outstanding. The service was great, but we were the only people in the place (late on a Monday night). The waitress was very attentive and super nice. Didn't try the soul food, but definitely intrigued. Will be going back. read more

First time to Lao-Thai. Awesome mixed seafood dish. They don't hold back on the spice. Solid Pad Thai. Won Ton Soup is a winner. Prices are good, service is attentive front door opens up into the middle of the dining room, so if you're going during winter season, bring your jacket. But they will put out the space heaters to try to combat the cold. Portions leave plenty for lunch tomorrow. Many vegetarian dishes too. Cozy spot for a date or small intimate group, but not large parties. read more

Pineapple fried rice is a must have! One of my favorite dishes here -- a generous serving and plenty of nuts, pineapple, and other ingredients that I can't really remember. Their larb was spicy and pretty good. I tried the Tom Khaa for the first time and did not like it, mainly because I don't prefer a milky soup. I am more of a Tom Yum Ga kinda fan. It's a hole in the wall so don't be surprised if there are only a few tables but takes forever to get your food! read more

Went here last night (Fri) for some Thai and Soul Food. I was craving some ribs and cornbread and she was craving something "ethnic" The place was pretty empty when we walked. We were told to sit anywhere we wanted to. Fortunately, there was a table open right near the window. UNfortunately, the "sould food" was OUT. So, I was forced to eat thai..which was fine. We ordered the pumpkin thai curry, tom yum chicken soup, and the pad prik pow. They were all very tasty - and the pumpkin curry went very well with the coconut rice. I decided to get the mango sticky rice for dessert. The rice was a little bit hard and the mango not so sweet. Benefit of the doubt - maybe mango is out of season. The food was fairly good but the soup was a bit watery. The main problem I have is with the service. There were two servers working at the time we were there and neither one could understand what we were saying. I think it's great to have authentic Thai people working at the restaurant but a good grasp of the language is important too. We had to explain what we wanted multiple times before it got through - and I'm not talking about complicated stuff either. My companion wanted a REGULAR ice tea (and she was explicit about it) but we got Thai ice tea. She asked for a sweetener but that wasn't understood either. The creaminess and textures of everything going on in that dish is just to die for. the chewy texture of the rice and mango, complemented by the slightly crunchier sweet seeds (maybe lotus? not sure) on top, provide for an amazing flavor explosion. they are great with to-go orders, which makes dinner a cinch if you're in a pinch! read more

When I get Lao food cravings and am too lazy to cook it, I go here. It's close and open until a decent hour for its location. The Lao Papaya Salad is great! I prefer it over the Thai version. I always order the Larb (Lao style). The duck Larb is good, but whenever I try to order sticky rice they never have it and I have to settle for regular white rice. Bleh! There have been times when I walk in while the man/server is mopping. The chemical smell is so strong that I can't take it and I have to leave. I'm not one of those overly sensitive people who think all chemicals are bad, so believe me when I say the smell is offensive! The man/server is nice and attentive though. We ordered yellow curry, chicken satay, and pad see ew. All dishes were hot from the kitchen and were flavorful. I am used to seeing a little bit darker, more leafy Chinese broccoli so I'm not sure if that's the vegetable that was used. However, it still tasted just fine. Like many small businesses, there seemed to be 1 server and 1 cook in the kitchen. There were at most 2-3 other parties in the restaurant at the same time as us so the timing wasn't too bad. I could only imagine the wait time if the restaurant had been full. In terms of the ambiance, the restaurant had wood paneling and small decorations from presumably Thailand. The room was cold and we both kept our jackets on while eating. I would recommend ordering food and enjoying it in the comfort of your own home. I would order here again. read more

The food was very tasty, the service was excellent and friendly, the atmosphere was nice and cozy and the prices were quite good compared to other restaurants in the area. Came here on Friday night after getting my nails done close by. This place is consistently good. I always order the same items though and haven't really tried any new items. What I like to order: Papaya salad-Lao style, larb-duck, pad se ew, and nam kao tod salad. I think this is my favorite place for nam kao salad. I love the texture of the rice and the ratio of lao sausages in this dish is perfect. I've tried this dish at other laotian restuarants but this is hands-down my favorite. Try some of these dishes when you are here. There is only street parking. The restaurant is small and it is a family business. Prices are very reasonable and portions are good sized. Wow! Lao-Thai Kitchen is yummy!! First off, the restaurant is beautifully decorated with cultural artifacts and wood walls. Secondly, the staff is very quick and friendly. Thirdly, the food is excellent. I went to Lao-Thai Kitchen for lunch last month and I've been salivating about the prospect of going back. I ordered the grilled chicken. The chicken was tasty and it came with many sides. There's a tom yum and tofu soup to start, green papaya salad (sweetened with shredded carrots), fried tofu, sticky rice and fresh greens. It was a span of tastes on my palette for such a quick lunch. The restaurant closes after lunch for two hours at 3pm and reopens around 5pm for dinner. Either lunch or dinner, Lao-Thai kitchen is the perfect choice. read more

It was cold and I needed eat something because I had to meet up with someone in the next 45 minutes so I went into this place and sat down. It was a little cold coming through the front door at the front area doesn't seem to be heated that much but I was probably waited on by a gentleman in the front. He gave me my menu and I sort of had an idea of what I wanted. So he went in the back ordered my meal brought it out. I would say that the service was average I was kind of the only person in there so I'm a little surprised at the lack of urgency to attend to me but aside from that it's a small place and I'm sure it's run as a mom and pop operation. What saved this review? The food. They serve me a beautiful presentation of fresh food that tasted like I got to Thailand and order the dish there. I looked at the menu and if everything else and what I did see them serve other customers that they arrived after I did I have no doubt that the quality is outstanding. I recommend this place for the meal that I ate. I ordered the kee mao chicken. The produce on the plate was fresh bright and cooked the exact right Christina and texture. I can't make them be truthful and greet a customer and warm the place up but I can be satisfied with the food that I ate. And everyone that came in and picked up take out which were quite a few people all were very happy that the order was there so I have no doubt that the food is of a high quality in the eyes of others. read more

Thai Food and Soul Food are my two favorite cuisines, although I never thought I'd be eating them in the same meal. I had to stop here while visiting a friend in the area and try it out. We were there for an early dinner on a Monday, so the place was totally empty; despite this we still received mediocre service. That was really the only bad part of our meal, though. The food was really delicious...comfort food from two continents. We ordered a Thai dish and a Lao dish and a Soul dish just to really experience the combination. The slight Asian tang on the ribs helped to tie all the meals together, but really, I found myself sticking to the Soul food. Decent ribs, fantastic collard greens, and sweet potatoes so sweet and good I ate them even though I don't like sweet potatoes. The Thai dish was good but unremarkable, and the Lao dish was very tasty; I really enjoyed the Lao/Thai menu combination. Overall this was a good meal, but more of a novelty than anything else. It feels weird to say that I went to a Lao/Thai restaurant and the best thing I ate was collard greens. read more

This place is a hidden delight along Solano Avenue in the Albany area. The area is overall very walkable, so you might miss it if walk by this place during the evening hours. They serve a great veggie egg rolls as appetizers. We had the Rad Nar which hits the spot, plus some Pad Prik-Khing (be careful of the leaves though). I give them a lot of credit for their Pumpkin Curry... the flavor is excellent, the texture perfect, and the spiciness was just right. I believe that dish cost $10, which is fine, because the portions were huge. However, the stuffed chicken wings and pad see ew were both less impressive. The stuffed chicken wings were $6.95, and there were two chicken wings, each split into 4 pieces. It tasted good, but not worth the $7 and there wasn't anything to accompany the dish besides one lettuce leaf and a slice of orange. Maybe a small side of cucumber salad would have been nice. The pad see ew was nothing spectacular. I didn't like it when the thick rice noodles are stuck together in clumps, and the noodles didn't seem well stir-fried. There was a scarce amount of veggies, which is unfortunate because that made the dish seemed less balance. I guess no one can compare to the pad see ew at Chabaa Thai on Irving in SF. Plus, the service was lacking when I went there Friday night. Two ladies worked the front and I saw 3 others in the kitchen. The food came out at a reasonable rate, but the ladies seemed to disappear at times. I had to flag them down both when I wanted to order and get the check. They don't seem to understand the concept of checking up on the customer. Parking is crappy on Solano Ave. and beware of all the jay-walking pedestrians. You will have better luck finding parking on the side streets. I don't think I'll make any special trips out here. I might stop by if I was in the area. read more

Although I have been a solid regular at Gordo Taqueria across the street, this small place never really caught my eye. Fast forward to a couple of months ago when I was luckily introduced to this place by my (vegetarian) friend. Now, one caveat: it seems there is only 1 server, so you will have to flag someone down once in a while. But as this restaurant is so small, they respond quickly. Food: The Pad Thai here is some of the best I have had, with the noodles being not too dry or too wet and a noodle to ingredient ratio that's just right. The Yellow Curry (and tofu) is also tasty with some rice on the side. The Pad Kee Mao is s-p-i-c-y, which is how I like it. I also had a fried fish entree that was topped with some sticky sauce that was to die for. Although I am positive there are better Thai places out there, in terms of quality of food, presentation, etc. the food here is CONSISTENTLY good. I always leave this place feeling satisfied after a meal, which is how it should be. read more

Good Thai food experience here. I know it says Lao-Thai, but the food we ate was definitely on the Thai side of things. The green curry beef was very tasty-- as advertised, it came with lots of veggies (eggplant, bamboo, zucchini, onion, garlic, chili, and fresh basil). We ordered spicy on the curry and it actually came that way, which was nice given that even when we order spicy we usually wind up with something closer to medium (perhaps the white man adjustment). The heat on the curry was good, it had a decent viscosity, and the portion enough to share. We also had the Pra Ram (mixed veggies in satay sauce) with chicken. The meat was nicely moist and the stir fried veggies crisp and fresh. The price was reasonable, service was quick and friendly. The place is pretty small so we could hear our food being cooked to order. Nice. read more

For the price, it's a fairly solid little take-out joint. I ate in one time but was a little turned off by the nasty carpet and space heater. Overall, the food is pretty solid thai food, particularly the soups (tom yung and coconut curry). I haven't tried the Lao food yet, but will be back for more thai soups. A hidden gem on Solano, I almost don't want people to discover it. But, now I think people need to know. I've been here at least four times this year. Their entrees are consistently delicious and the service is great every time. Try the Lao sausage with sticky rice (sides) and the Angel or Stuffed Wings. Addictive. I order them every time. Also, the owner, Boua, treats you like family. She's super friendly, hospitable, and definitely takes pride in her restaurant, which she took over from family about a year ago. Another little thing that I'm peculiar about: the dishes, utensils, and glassware are crystal clean. read more

I was excited to see that this restaurant had Kao Soi (a somewhat hard to find Northern Thai dish), but it was totally off. The broth was clear and the meat was ground with wide noodles. Maybe this is the Lao version? Anyway, I didn't care for it at all. My brother-in-law got the fermented pork. He didn't like it at all either. My husband had the fish larb. He said it was just ok. The soul-food menu was pretty sparse, and it didn't look like you could order the sides separately. The Thai dishes we got were good - panang curry, hot basil and a noodle dish. The mun tod was some of the blandest I've had, but the dipping sauce was pretty good, I even ate all the shredded cabbage using it. A great small Lao/Thai food restaurant. I came here with my girlfriend and we order 3 different entrees and 2 Thai teas. The price was pretty reasonable and the portion size is good. Our total bill was $35.62, that is pretty good now days for Thai food. They are located in Albany on Solano st. There is also a lot of small shops in the area to check out before or after dinner. Definitely will be back to try other dishes. Only reason they didn't get 5 stars this time was because the food takes longer to come out compare to other Thai restaurants. read more
