This is a conflicting review, as the masseuse was actually VERY good and his name was Paul. But here's where the issue is. My husband and I walked in for the $30/hr foot massage. When we came in and said that was what we wanted they escorted us to the back to a table for a massage. I said to the women again, I wanted the foot massage. So at this point we felt trapped and like we couldn't leave as they forced us to the back area of this establishment. We laid down for our massage, and enjoyed the actual massage. It seemed like Paul actually understood the body, and it did feel good. At the end of the massage they asked us if we wanted our feet done in addition to the hour we just got. We said yes.... thinking it would be an additional $10/15 in addition to the $30. We met the lady and man who did our massages at the front after and she said $120 for both. Well that was quite different than what we came in and asked for $30/hr x 2 = $60. I tried to explain to the 4 people standing in the front that we came in and asked for the foot massage and they gave us NO choice but to do what they wanted. All I wanted was an acknowledgement. They all pretended that they had no idea what my husband and I were saying. And we both felt completely taken advantage of. Shame on you. I am the type of customer that repeats and tells others. The massage was surprisingly good! She used elbows, fore arms and strong thumb. Worked the whole body, with good pressure. Very relaxing. Took a star off because no one at the joint could speak a word a English and then at the end they waited to clearly inspect and judge my tip level, which sadly is common at Asian massage places, but never a nice send off. Went there yesterday. At first, they were going to give me a male masseuse. He was nice enough to sense my discomfort at the thought of a dude's hands on me, and got me a lady - a rather beautiful lady named Mimi. It was the best massage, I think, I've ever had. Mimi was very thorough and worked hard (with those tiny Chinese fingers) to relieve every single muscle in my body. In fact, one of my knees was sore beforehand, and had been for a couple of days, but honestly when the massage was finished no more soreness and it still feels well today. After reading some of the negative reviews I realize that the uptight women who wrote them have obviously never had a Chinese massage, and should probably loosen up, or go to a Christian massage place (if one exists) and stop judging the Chinese. read more

After suffering so much pain from my day job and intense workout, I came to Lao Yu. They are having their 5-year anniversary sale right now. 1 HR massage is $45 as opposed to $50. It is about the average price for other Asian massage parlor. I do like this place a lot. My massage lady, Cindy asked me where I have pain and she emphasized on those areas mostly. I felt so relaxed and my pain is almost all gone as I am typing right now. Shoulders and arms feel lighter. The rooms are not completely sound-proof and I could hear the customer next door. However, there is at least a "room" instead of curtains in some places. I would definitely come back. read more

I just left Lao Yu's and just wow. I've gone a few times before and have always been happy. But this one take the cake, Anna was my masseuse and while she was STRONG, she checked in to make sure it wasn't too much pressure or pain. She got out every single knot in my back and I feel like a new person. The room was a little cold, they had a space heater and it was my fault for not asking to turn it on but I think I was too relaxed to say any words. Will definitely come more often. I would have to say overall I enjoyed my experience. A and I walked in here after our night of happy hour bliss, dessert at Milk bar, and thought we'd end the night is a quick reflexology for our feet. We ended up getting the 60 minute full body massage. In case youre wondering 60 min massage is $50, pretty standard pricing for a chinese massage place. There are no frills and thrills, no special amenities such as steam/suana, but its clean. This place does use oils on your skin and require you to take off your clothes. (I've been to chinese massages where they've asked you to keep your clothes on or used a thin blanket instead of massaging directly onto your skin.) Also, they have makeshift rooms with doors better than some others that are just curtained off into sections. If youre into deep tissue, I would definitely check this place out. These ladies may seem small and petite but dang, they work your back like crazy. I'd like to think i have a high tolerance for pain but I think i may have shed a tear. Yes, I'm sure i could have said something but i just lay there silently squealing in pain. However when she moved on away from my shoulder blades, I did have a nice relaxing massage and I actually dozed off for a couple of minutes. I will have to say this though.. my back does feel better today so maybe the saying... "no pain, no gain" applies to massages as well! Oh... i had brought in a frozen icecream dessert from milk bar and had asked them throw it away because I was done with it. There must have been something lost in translation because when i was done with the massage they brought out my icecream. This place is a gem. I needed a massage after a 6 mile hike around the city hitting my favorite shops. I stumbled on Lao Yu's Body Spa and decided on the 1hr massage. I had Linda who was fantastic. She could tell my back was really locked up and worked tirelessly on my shoulders and back. I really didn't want it to end and would have signed up for another hour if I had the time. The people were friendly, the establishment was quiet and price was cheap. The only negative I have is that it was a little stuffy in there. So this was my first time coming in here after walking by it countless times before. I got the 60min foot massage with Tony and holy baby Jesus was it good! This man is strong and isn't afraid to get in there. I'd say he spent 30 min per leg - 15min intensely at each foot and 15 min at the upper and lower leg which was heavenly. He also finished it up with 5 min extra of hip and low back stretching and a scalp rub which felt invigorating. I'm so ready to put on my heels and head out for the night! Definitely one of the better massages at this price point. They focus more on the pain points rather than a "general" massage which worked well in my case. For all the females out there - seems like they only have male masseuse's (fyi incase you have a preference) There are three things that annoyed me: 1) The main door and doors of the customers around me kept opening regularly (and it was loud) 2) The masseuse's phone kept ringing - and he had frequent chats in the middle of the massage 3) In terms of cleanliness, it could have been better...the massage bed smelt a bit of dust Basically, it was what you expect at that price. I got a 45 minute massage here for the first time today and came out of this place feeling very gross and creeped out by the male masseuse. Looking at other Yelp reviews after the visit I see a lot of other people feel the same way re him. I've gone to a lot of Asian massage places in NYC and this was the first time I've ever felt like this. This guy didn't drape like people normally do, my butt was hanging out a lot of the time and I kept re-draping myself. He spent an insane amount of time on my butt and then kept massaging my inner thighs increasing close to my vagina. It was all super borderline and I kept trying to figure out in my head if it was sketchy or not. Note to everyone: If you're trying to figure out if it's sketchy or not, it *is* sketchy. It became clear when he thwacked the f- out of my back at the end in a really aggressive way and then laughed and walked out of the room that he was a creep and knew how uncomfortable this made me. Note: I like a *very* strong massage, this was not that. I discourage anyone from going to this place in order to avoid being harassed by his creepy dude who clearly gets off on this. My boyfriend and I came in for a 60 minutes couple's massage & it was far from the romantic, relaxing and intimate experience you'd expect it to be. We are not the pickiest of people, but after only 18 minutes in we got up and walked out. First, they switch his masseuse after 10 minutes from a female to a male. From the beginning he mentioned he preferred a female. But, we continued. Both masseuses were talking to each other the whole time, also, chatter from other employees was very loud. The door was open the whole time with people walking in and out, while we were both NAKED inside. Soo extremely loud outside. It was horrible! I think I would have enjoyed my massage if I wasn't forced to listen to the man in the room next to me receive oral sex for the majority of the time I was there. I waited about ten minutes into my massage just to make sure I wasn't being paranoid or rude, and when I started hearing "I'm going to come!" as if it was in the same room as me (all we had was a half divider wall between us) I had to make the man massaging me stop. I don't judge sex work, but please don't put me in a room next to someone with no filter. They focus on knots better than anyone else, and use a good amount of pressure, but it's targeted in a way that doesn't leave you sore the next day. I've been coming here regularly and always had a good experience. The people who work here are knowledgeable - I knew I was in good hands when, the first time I came, the woman working on my back could tell I had a knee injury. This was the MOST INAPPROPRIATE and UNPROFESSIONAL experience I have EVER had in one of these Asian storefront massage/bodywork places - and I've been living in the EV for over 20 years. The woman VERY inappropriately touched-caressed my leg; each time she adjusted the waist band of my shorts - she laughed; I told her not to touch my neck which she indicated she understood, but then I had to stop her when she started to massage my neck, she would enter the room WITHOUT knocking, and THEN stand there with the door open looking at me while I was changing. When I made it clear that I wanted to go she offered me more time and when I said no she badgered me so many times I had to finally raise my voice. Then, with the door open another massager came up and proceeded to start talking to me - WHILE I was changing, the door completely open to the hallway where people were walking by. And when I complained to the manager no one apologized, I stupidly paid for it, but I'm going to put the charge in dispute with the CC company. I'm glad not everyone has had a bad experience here but if you look at the reviews there not only many. many bad reviews... but if you read what those reviews say you'll see how extreme the situations were... I have been here prior for an awesome foot massage so I expected it to be equally as good for a back massage. Upon arriving, there were no female masseuses available so I went with one of the male masseuses. Although the massage was good, I was uncomfortable the entire time. It felt very intrusive and violating. There were times during the massage where I felt he went way too close to my female parts. As a woman who has been massaged many times I would advise other women not to get massaged here by the male masseuses. I cannot speak for the female masseuses, but the intrusiveness and abrasiveness of the male masseuse was enough for me to run home and literally hop in the shower to scrub away the yucky feeling I felt. read more

However I would suggest that they hire a customer service person who can speak English or at least understand English.
