One of the wires inside my trunk hinge assembly got cut, causing my Ford Focus' "trunk unlatched" idiot light to trigger along with constant beeping that would not shut off no matter how far I drove. And since I was about to drive 300 miles from Shasta I needed to fix this problem before I left town. I took the car to two or three mechanics in Shasta, and since it was the peak of tourist season in August nobody could do the repair within the next couple of days. A friend suggested I call Larry, and within an hour he met me in the parking lot of a local auto parts store. The repair itself--splicing a cut wire back together--is about as easy of a mechanical job as you'll ever find, and any competent auto mechanic can do it in five minutes. But the real issue that needed attention wasn't the cut wire, but the underlying problem of *why* the wire got cut in the first place. There was obviously a problem with the engineering of my trunk's wiring assembly, and Larry wanted to identify the problem and fix it so that none of the associated wires would get cut again. For some auto repair tasks, you need a second person, and since I was standing there Larry crawled into the trunk of my Ford Focus, and asked me to shut it on him Billy Batts style until just before the trunk latch engaged. He had me open and shut the trunk on him twenty or so times. The whole time he was lying inside my trunk shining a flashlight on the hinge/wiring assembly, watching which way the wires moved as the trunk opened and shut. Over the course of about five minutes of this, he was able to see which way the wiring needed to be positioned in order to avoid getting caught in the hinge. He then put a stiff protective wrap around the wiring that would permanently hold the wires in the right position. If Ford had done this when the car was manufactured, my hood sensor wire would never have been cut in the first place. So not only did Larry repair the cut wire he ensured the problem would never occur again. For all this he charged me $50, which is probably what anyone else would have charged merely to splice the wire while not spending a moment diagnosing or correcting the problem's cause. Larry's a friendly, funny guy who obviously cares that any repair he does is going to last. When it comes to auto repair, there's invariably a right way and a wrong way to do the job--and it's clear that Larry is one of those mechanics who insists on always doing it the right way. read more

Larry was so helpful to my friend and I. We were driving up to Shasta and had some signs our car might be having some good problems. We drove to the address and called. He nicely told us to come drive in. We didn't know he didn't work on Mondays. He had a great welcoming attitude and was more than willing to help us on his off day. A review from several years ago before I had Yelp: Larry: "please hand me the largest wrench in my toolbox" *wham* and my '79 VW bus roared back to life, getting me all the way back to San Jose, where I promptly bought a replacement fuel pressure regulator and installed it based on his instructions. I broke down quite a ways north of Mt Shasta, and persuaded the tow truck dispatched by AAA to get me all the way to the nearest town, Mt Shasta. Larry answered the late night call, told me where to park overnight, and met me early the next morning. Our car's alternator belt broke on our road trip from San Francisco to Portland. We pulled over outside of a grocery store in Shasta to see if we could find an open repair shop. Everything was closed (since it was saturday). It was 100 degrees out and we had our dog so we were rushing to find some help. We called Larry and he quickly rolled up on his motorcycle to assess what was wrong. He then went to the auto parts store (twice) for us and was able to get our car fixed within 20-30 minutes. We were travelling to Oregon from Reno, Nv in our motor home and while we were leaving McCloud, Ca heading towards I-5, our motor home started overheating, we smelled coolant very strongly, started losing power, and the check engine light came on. We were able to make it to an exit off of I-5 and pull over on a side street by a Best Western Hotel. It was about 6:00 at night, and dark outside, and raining. But I needed to try and diagnose what the damage was. I opened up the doghouse to the motor and coolant was everywhere. I finally found a hose that burst. We figured there was nothing we could do that night so we checked in to the hotel. We asked the man at the counter if he knew anybody that worked on RV's and he said he had a guy that had done work for him before. He mentioned the name Larry's Mobile and said he would get the number and leave it on our bill for the next morning. I went to the counter at around 7:30 the next morning to get the number and discovered that he had not left it. I found the number on a google search and called the office at about 8:05. The lady was very nice and told me that Larry was out of the office and she would have him call me. Larry called me back in about 10 minutes and we discussed the situation. He said it would take him about an hour to get there. Larry called again in about a half hour and said he would be there in 15 minutes. Larry showed up and assessed everything and took off to the parts store. He came back with everything he needed and got the repair done. He wanted to check the engine warning light but with where they put the connection on my RV, it is next to impossible to get at (just ask the guy who had to smog my RV. If he hadn't done a smog on a similar coach he would have never been able to figure it out). Larry was confident that it was just a burst hose and that check engine light was on because of the overheating. I asked if his repair was a temporary fix but he told me it was a permanent fix. From the time I called Larry to the time we were back on the road was just under 2 hours. If that is not excellent customer service, I truly do not know what is. He charged a completely fair price. I forgot to mention that it was raining pretty heavily that morning, and Larry still came out and did the repair. We completed our trip to Oregon and back home several days later with no problems. Larry is a GREAT guy -- oh, and did I mention that he is an amazing mechanic, punctual, honest, thoughtful and fair? He taught me a lot while figuring out why my 1980 Westfalia van engine would turn over but not start. It was flooded (duh!) -- not only did he diagnose and treat the problem, but he taught me how to avoid flooding it in the future. He even spoke with my Berkeley Buslab mechanics to verify some info and to be sure we were all on the same page. My girlfriend and I went up to Shasta on Friday. On Saturday as we were on the freeway the check transmission lights came on and we pulled over. It was clear that something was wrong so we called auto repair shops, but they were all closed during the weekend. we were driving n. on I-5 10 miles s.of Mt Shasta when our battery light came on. We noticed that it was not charging. We rolled into town in front of Baxters auto parts store figuring we would be lucky to find a parts store open let alone a mechanic. It was July 3 on a Sunday at 2 o'clock in the afternoon..well sometimes you just get lucky. While my husband was in the store I happen to call Larry. Well Larry was in the store too and he said are you outside in a white van. I said yes, I am.. he came on out and diagnosed that it was indeed the alternator. 15 minutes later we were down in a parking lot under a big shade tree getting our new alternator installed. 1 One hour later we were on the road. Larry was professional knowledgeable ,fast and well worth any money that you would spend when something happens like this . It would have cost a lot more to stay in a hotel. this is one of the easiest auto repairs we have had done all on the side of the road.
