A great place for hay, livestock and equine essentials! Locally established and easy to get to. Staff are quick and helpful, though not the "warm and fuzzy" environment that some of the other local feed stores in the area provide. Totally not a deal breaker for me, especially as I usually like to get in and get out, but I know for some, it matters. I got two beautiful roosters from Larsons. Very unanticipated purchase but so happy. The lady at the desk was super nice and the guy that helped me out both days with my roosters was amazing. I bought a house for them a day or two later, and they deliver that to my home very seamlessly, and I'm very happy. This place was like something out of a nightmare. When I drove up the driveway, I was thrown off by all the ramshackle broken down furniture and junk everywhere - I wasn't even sure where I was supposed to park. As I approached the front door, I saw a stack of wire cages, some with rabbits, some with chickens and other small birds (quail/guinea fowl?). The rabbits had very long nails (aka, they are not being handled and groomed), and one of the rabbits' water bottles was completely empty. The rabbits did not have hay, which is essentially to their digestion. Each rabbit was alone in a small wire cage, with no resting boards, no enrichment, a big bowl of pellets, resting on wire (which is bad for their feet, they can get infected). Three chickens were crowded in a small wire cage (smaller than what they'd get in a factory farm, actually) and had stepped on their waterer and knocked it over so they had no water on a warm day. I alerted the staff to the lack of water for the rabbit & chickens. A lot of the merchandise inside is old and dusty - a lot of it looked like it had been on the shelf for years. As I was leaving, one of the employees was assisting a customer buying quail/guinea fowl - they were loading them into a cardboard box with holes punched in the side. The cardboard box was a D-Con box -- aka, the toxic rodenticide that the EPA has been trying to ban due to poisonings of children and non-target animals -- I don't know if the box was the store's or the customer's. There was a disgustingly muddy small paddock with a bunch of cows - they should have had acreage for that number of cows, but instead they're sitting in filth and churning up mud. No shade. I can only guess they must be raising them to sell at auction for slaughter. We ran out of hay at home a few months ago, and in desperation bought a bale of Timothy from Larsen's - the hay was filled with what I first thought were weird stringy dirt clods...turned out they were dried out cowpies all throughout the bale of hay, potentially putting my animals at risk of contracting disease. I have never seen that in a bale of hay at any of the other places I buy hay - it was the worst quality hay I have ever purchased. Please, please, don't spend your money at stores that sell animals and that keep animals in poor conditions like this. read more

Went Into Larsen's feed store today to pick up some feed for our new sheep. The lady working there treated the costumers like they were a total inconvenience to her. When it was my turn I asked a few questions about salt licks for my sheep. She clearly had not time for me and responded with quick, rude comments. We left without buying anything and made the drive to the Sebastopol feed store where they greeted us with a smile and got us everything we needed. Much cleaner and nicer store. read more

Girlfriend went to the business to buy some feed for our horses. When she got home the type of feed in the barrel was not correct so we went back to exchange for the correct barrel. The young girl who was working the counter was very helpful, but the older lady chimed in and asked for a receipt. Unfortunately we didnt have the receipt, but the younger girl remembered the sale and was able to retrieve our customer card which confirmed the sale. The old lady became super rude, eluded that my girlfriend was lying and that the young girl was dumb. Bottomline: overpriced, rundown, and run by a a grump. Wont be back and hope that young girl has since left the business. If you like overpriced good and service with an attitude this is definitely your spot. read more

I used to go to Larsen's with my Dad 30 or so years ago and I loved the big parrot that greeted customers back then, so I might be a bit biased. But I like Larsen's a lot. The whole property has a charmingly ramshackle quality, which some reviewers apparently found appalling but seems authentically farm-oriented and non-pretentious to me. I just went to get a 50lb bag of rabbit pellets for less than $15, which is about what I'd pay for a 5-10lb bag at most places. The gal at the counter complimented both my shirt and my hair during my brief transaction. I've been helped by her a handful of times and she always has something nice to say. She handed my receipt to the guy outside and he asked me to pull up to the barn and by the time I did, like 30 seconds later, he was waiting with the bag of pellets, which he loaded into the back of my truck. He wished me a good day and I was on my way. Easy, fast and pleasant way to get inexpensive rabbit pellets for sure. On a previous visit, I stopped to look at a horse on my way in and my straw hat blew into his paddock. I mentioned it to the guy working inside, and said I wasn't concerned about the dollar store hat, I was just concerned that it might not be good for the horse if he ate it. Two minutes later, a young guy from outside handed me my hat with a smile. I have heard from a couple people that there was indeed a grumpy older woman who worked there but I've been going there every few months for the last year and a half and haven't run into her. Larsen Feeds has the best bales of alfalfa and orchard hay consistently. I have tried other feed stores and their bales pale in comparison. Their delivery option is for a very reasonable charge and well worth it considering the delivery persons are farm wise and will rotate and stack your supply while you just stand to the side and watch. My kinda service ! Faline and Duncan, my two horses I host most of the year look like they are ready for the show ring with all the great feed. As far as price is concerned, I have never shopped for price because when it comes to my babies, it is only quality that counts for me. read more

They have a very respectable tack area and are priced better than Jay Palms (albeit Jay's is much fancier in appearance and Jay's stuff is very high quality). They have educational books and wormers, too. The staff has always been quite nice to deal with and ready to assist with the larger orders. I like Larsen's. read more

By far the worst pet supply store. My daughter and I showed up to get some stuff for our animals and decided to take a look at the baby ducks and chickens. Wrong. We looked into one of the outdoor cages and there were some that were not looking good. I pointed out this to some of the staff outside and they referred it to their "hospital". Well it wasn't working. I would guess they put them in there to die. I shooed my daughter away. The conditions of the other birds weren't so good. They are stuck in a large shipping container with dirty cages and little to no circulation. I saw the staff outside and watched them on their cell phones. To top it off, one of the employees was talking about how he "couldn't wait to get out of here". It seems as there is little to no care about their jobs and especially the animals they care for. read more

I have been going to Larsen's for 15 years. Their customer service, quality of feed, and supplies have improved tremendously. Their store, yard, and employees are organized and friendly. I can remember past employees being unfriendly and it made me uncomfortable, especially when they were loading my truck with hay. Now, the guys in the yard are happy, friendly, and polite. Ryan, especially, is always smiling and makes you feel welcome, appreciated, and he doesn't act like he hates his job. They are all super hard workers and I appreciate them and their service. They deserve all 5 stars in this rating. read more

Uneven hay quality. Mostly ok but I've gotten the odd dusty musty bale. They also make the guys who load the hay run back and forth to the store to pick up loading tickets which wastes time and wears them out! Similar prices to all the other suppliers so I keep coming back because it's convenient. read more

This place is a petaluma staple that carries tons of stuff that is hard to find (Like horse vaccines for instance). I have been coming here for years and always have a good experience. They hire local folks who are very helpful and kind. I'm guessing the only reason their rating is so low is because people who shop here don't use yelp. read more

This place is a disgrace to sonoma county. This was years ago but it is but was seared into my memory. In the room where they cook the chicks in a non ventilated room with no circulation, there was a bucket of about 20 dead chicks that had been taken out of the cages. I was shocked but none of the staff seemed to care. Also the 100 year old lady who works there, maybe the owner, is rude and takes about 10 min to ring up a transaction. Some of the food was past expiration dates. I would love to see this place shut down. read more

I went by this place on July 4th to look for a leash for our dog. We were out of town and had lost his leash. I took a little walk around the property since they were closed for the holiday. I discovered a very small enclosure filled with male and female peacocks. It made me very sad to see these beautiful birds confined to such small quarters with barely room to move around in the blazing heat. It appeared that they were intentionally placed in an area where the public would not see them. read more

When my husband went back they didn't give him a refund or a new chick. He had to purchase another chick. Not right and the people didn't even care that she had died!!! When I was pregnant I went in to pick up a 50# bag of rabbit pellets and I was told that I would have to carry it out myself because the girl behind the counter couldn't do it for me! I was soooooooooo angry i turned around and walked out. went back again on another trip hoping for it to be a better one. this time i bought a heat pad for my reptile cage. when i got it home a realized that it wasn't going to work out i decided to return it the next day. this time i was told that they have never sold them and that i must have bought it somewhere else. I don't know why even I'm writing review about this place. Compare to other feed store, price is higher. The owner have no sense of customer service. They look gurmpy all the time. The only reason I keep going is it is next to my property. Just to be precise, i have been buying things in this place for past twenty years. And I things has not changed. Same grumpy owner as if we are there to get things for free. Amazing and then you talk about immigrants taking over the business. Smile little bit. It helps. For some reason, my review was hidden.... I was a customer of theirs for quiet sometime. Here is the original review I posted: I used to buy my horse feed from here. It was low quality with super high prices, and don't even get me started on their grain prices. Through the roof! I looked at some of their tack- wow! Way over priced and the stuff was sitting there for so long that the leather was cracking.... really? I had to return a fly mask that didn't fit my horse, even though I was told by one of the owners that it would definitely fit and I could return it if it didn't fit. I tried it, big surprise, didn't fit. I returned the next day to return the product I was told I could return, and since I went to another feed store and bought the correct fitting mask, since Larsens was closed by the time I got home, I was told I could only get store credit... really? I didn't really need anything and everything there is so overpriced! I was told they were "knowledgeable", so when I asked about a grain to feed my mare who had recently foaled, I was treated with such disrespect. Like I was the idiot and how dare I ask for advise on what product I should purchase from them! Never go here. I have tired that place 3-4 times, and every time I was treated horribly! read more

Absolutely awful! I spent $400 on a chicken coop and they only gave me half of it, then when I realized what had happened and tried to get the other part they were rude, tried not to give me the other half of the chicken coop that I had payed for, and even went so far as to try to tell me they didn't sell that type of chicken coop. They did eventually make it right but their staff are completely uninformed and incredibly rude. I'll be spending my money at WESTERN FARM CENTER on west 7th in Santa Rosa from now on!!!! read more

This Feed Store does't even deserve one star. Not only is this the most filthy store I have ever been in, many of the products that are sold here are outdated or completely covered in dust. The one thing that bothered me most, was the complete lack of concern or care for the animals that are being sold there. This is a feed and pet supply business am I correct? You would never know this by the way the poor animals are cared for. Rabbits in filthy cages, filthy water, and improper food. (FYI Larsen's, Rabbits need hay for proper nutrition, you do have it there...you sell it right?) Never mind that they are housed out in the elements. NO shield from the sun or rain. What about the roosters (yes roosters) and chickens that are crammed 3 to 4 to a cage. Barely any room to turn around. They are housed out in the elements also. It's absolutely horrific how these animals are not cared for. These people should know better. Maybe they do and just don't care. I will never ever give this store my business. I hope you don't either. There are plenty of other feed stores to buy your pet and farm supplies. Stores that take excellent care of the animals they sell there, and have excellent knowledgeable staff. Larsen's is one big huge disappointment. read more

Okay, I just found this place and I was very impressed. They have everything you could possibly need for your home/smaller farm. I went in to get some chickens and the staff was very, very knowledgeable and friendly. They were very eager to help me out. I walked out with a bunch of chickens and supplies. Prices were very reasonable and they keep a good inventory of everything. Chickens, livestock, dogs, different bird varieties...they have it all. Definitely worth a trip out there if you are near this area. Just be careful that you don't run over their dog or any of the animals free grazing in the "parking lot." read more

I've been getting chicks at Larsen's for years. Last set of 8 chicks I got all had mites and I am still dealing with this so I am really disappointed. Also, I had two of their barred rock chickens just drop dead withing a few week of eachother. None of the rest of the flock was affected. read more

The reason I am giving this place one star- is because I am HORRIFIED by the way Larson's keep the animals they sell. The animals looked sick and terrified- in hot, hot sun and kept in wire cages. One rabbit had painful long nails (from being kept too long in in a wire cage) I was so heartbroken and sickened from seeing all of this. There was only one other customer in the animal area with me and he was also disgusted. The animals are somewhat hidden away- I'm guessing that is on purpose. I think they know it's wrong. I wish Larson's would just not carry animals as they CLEARLY do not treat them well. The rest of the place would be fine if it were not for that. Until then, I certainly will not be back. read more
