Last time I came here was about 5 years ago and it was amazing! And i'm glad 5 years later it's still just as amazing. It was pretty packed for a Sunday night. The owners/servers here are really wonderful and all the food tastes great. The decor is nice too. They play columbian TV channels and have plenty of seating. I would definitely share a couple of appetizers and know that not all the arepas have something inside, sometimes if it is like sausage and an arepa, it'll be two separate items. The BEST Colombian restaurant around! I'm a big fan of the beef empanadas (just over $1 each). Especially with their fresh salsa and mayo-ketsup! On this visit we tried out the Arepa Hamburger and were very pleased. It was a little messy to eat but worth it. The cheese was perfectly melted into the arepa, juicy burger, more of the "pink sauce", crispy bacon pieces, and an added some more of the salsa. ¡Delicioso! Completely worth the $10... we had leftovers, too. On past visits I've enjoyed the vegetable soup. In fact, when I'm having a rough day at work I come here during lunch just to feel the "comfort". Keep in mind I only go here because my husband likes it here. There are so many other Colombian restaurants that have wayyyyyyy better food and more options. It have to admit, it was very busy this Saturday around the 3pm mark. My husband and I came in, got a table and at first, the waitress gave us menus and silverware...but she never came back. 3 other parties came in right after us and 2 of those parties got their drink orders before we did and then the 3rd party was having the same issues we were and just left. We were waiting for our friend to arrive but it only took him 5 min to get there. After our friend arrived. We were still waiting there a good 10 min just for someone to take our drink order. If your Colombian, you know when u got to a Colombian restaurant that it's supposed to fast service and the food needs to come out quickly due to the fact of eating everything nice & hot. I consider this place to be one of those hole in the walls you never really notice until you stumble on it by mistake. This is a small Colombian restaurant in a small lot with very kind staff and uncomfortable but pretty seating and decor. They have a pretty expansive menu but because their main logo was arepas, my friend and I decided to try them. I got the chorizo arepas with cheese and in all honesty I was not a fan of it for the most part. The arepas itself was good but the chorizo was not my favorite, it was chopped up but I felt it had more fatty and hard as rock pieces than actual meat. Thankfully everything was not bad. My friend really enjoyed her grilled chicken one and their appetizers were very tasty as well as their drinks. Another friend who we met there claimed that when the cook changes, so does the flavor. Maybe if this were in Miami, I would give it 3 stars. I think I am leaning more towards 3.5, but since there are not too many Colombian restaurants around here, I will have to give them support by pushing this up to 4. Bf and I went not too long ago and both got the arepas con carne mechada (arepas with shredded beef). Pretty good with a nice serving of meat and cheese. We also ordered fried plantains (pronounce this to rhyme with mountains, please, as it should properly be said) and pandebonos. I am especially in love with pandebonos and found these little pockets of love made of yuca and cheese when I briefly took up residence in south FL. The ones from Las Arepas de Julia were good, don't get me wrong, but since they are not flying out the door, these were not fresh and I am quite certain that they were nuked before coming to my table. I have been coming here 11 years. The service and food are hit or miss. If there are issues with the food, they do not like to replace. They want to charge you to fix their mistakes. Today, I am really angry, though. I ordered 8 empanadas to go. Three were obviously burned, but they still intended to sell them to me. My arepa de chocolo was obviously way overcooked. I asked about it and showed the owner and she assured me that it was not. I got it home, and it is the driest, disgusting concoction of flour, corn and hard cheese that I've had the displeasure to taste. It is under-cooked on the inside and a nasty burnt outer crust. This place is magic. It is very delicious. They have fresh squeezed juice. I usually get "tomate de arbol" juice which I fell in love with when I visited Ecuador. I also get their beef and chicken empanadas with their fresh table salsa. It's probably my favorite appetizer of all time. For the entree, I get the shredded beef arepa with fries. I love the pink sauce at the table for the fries. If it were closer to my house, I'd be there for breakfast, lunch and dinner :D You do need to know a little bit of Spanish. But if you check out the menu ahead of time, you can point at whatever it is that you want. They also might have someone there who speaks English but I speak Spanish so I've never asked. For the people that are unhappy with the timeliness and service. The service at the restaurant is typical that you would see in South America. In most places, aside from the US, eating out is a time where you enjoy the time with your family. If you are in a hurry and need the check, simply ask but if not, they'll leave you alone to enjoy catching up with family and friends. We had actually driven all the way out to Lilburn for some BBQ but the place I wanted to try **cough, cough** Tipsy Pig **cough cough**, was actually OUT of ribs and after we aited for 45 minutes for the owner to come back with more from the smoke house, we started looking for another place. Anyhow, we had the good fortune of driving by this place and it was totally worth it. I love Colombian food and so does the wife (she's from there) and she swears this is the best Colombian place we have been to in the metro area....and I agree with her. We both had the had the bandeja paisa and if you aren't familiar with Colombian food let me put it this way...if you can eat all of it, you're a man,LOL. It's a lot of food. The service was friendly although not quite as fast as we would have liked although maybe thats a good thing since it usually means they are cooking everything fresh. For dessert we had brevas (figs) with arequipe (sort of like a caramel pudding) and cheese....it was outstanding. I almost forgot....no matter what you eat, make sure you get some of their sausage. It's hand made on premises and its damn good. If you are looking to try something different or if you're Colombian and want a (really good) taste of home, you should definitely drive out to this place in Lilburn. it's VERY GOOD. read more

While I go for the arepas and chicharones, my husband has been hunting for mondongo in Atlanta since we got here and Julia's is the only one we've found that keeps mondongo cookin' all week long. It's a small place, probably used to be a fast food joint before it became Julia's. We got two orders of full meat, fat and skin-on chicharones, two orders of mondongo, and a container full of arepas for $30. Which is great, since mondongo is such a commodity and hard to make. They don't speak English on the phone, so have a translating friend order for you on the phone if you don't want to wait around in the shop for your food. Initially we were really excited to go.....unfortunately once we got there the experience changed for the worst , service was really really poor.....we figured ok the food would be good. That also was not good. Going back to the service let me tell you that it was horrible. The server would take forever to react to any requests, it was so bad that we decided to order our drinks, appetizer and entree all at once in fear that if we did not it would take forever to get our food. Once the food arrived we were disappointed with everything extremely over cooked and poorly served. I've been hearing about this place for a long time and finally have a chance to sample the food! I ordered a pandenoro and arepa paisa. The pandenoro, a cheese bread is just ok, mainly because it wasn't fresh out of oven. I would give it a 2 star. The arepa paisa (a puffy pastry made of corn meal, stuffed with plantains, avocado, beans, chicharron and beef) is out of this world! The ingredients gives it a great combination of flavor and texture. I especially like the slight cruchiness of chicharron. Sweetness from the plantain gives a surprisingly pleasent flavor. I heard the arepas chocolo is good too. I'll have to try it next time. In short, it's a great place for casual dining and good food at a great price. read more

Best Colombian food in town! The Bandeja Paisa or Típico is the best I'd ever tried; flavor is very homey and size is humongous. OMG! The first time I ordered I almost faint! Huge, but I ate everything, including the super bowl of beans that comes with it. Empanadas are excellent and pan de bonos are delicious. I recommend the passion fruit, sour sup or blackberry juices, or the creole Gatorade/ thirst quencher: "Agua 'e Panela con Limon". Service is good too and place is always clean!!! read more

We have been to this restaurant many times. Today it was TERRIBLE!!! The tamal smelled and tasted ROTTEN! I returned it and was terrified to order anything else! The COOK and the SERVER DO NOT HAVE THE ABILITY TO SMELL! You could smell that it was ROTTEN a mile away. As soon as the dish was set on the table I could smell the ROTTEN. The tamal looked dry and the color was terrible!!!! At the end of the meal(my husband, the other person that was eating with me) we were brought the bill and were being charged the tamal that was ROTTEN??? My husband explained to the server that we should not be charged for ROTTEN food and she had no clue!! After a long explanation to the server of what a GOOD restaurant does about the bill if something is wrong. I get my car washed next door. I stumbled upon this one by accident. I work in a puro latino environment and I've embraced the culture. I've learned that one great way is to sample the food. From tacos to pupusas or caldos to arroz con (take your pick)...etc, I love the food. I like to make it too. With that being said, I can honestly say I like this restaurant. I go for the arepas mostly. Specifically, the arepas de paisa. The pancake is fresh and fluffy. The chicharron is crispy and the sauces add great flavor. They have a picoso one that is great too. Ask for it. I wash it all down with a soda de tamarindo. The meseras are very friendly and attentive. They remember me and make me feel at home. It's an overall great experience. The only negative is the location. Not because its in Lilburn, It's tough to access from US29. The parking lot is small too. That being said, I recommend you try it. read more

So upon arriving here the atmosphere felt off and I mentioned it to my girlfriend. We waited for 10 minutes to tell the cashier that we were here to eat while we saw other people getting seated and served before us. Then our waiter came and she wasn't friendly nor please at all, it was our first time there and she wasn't having it at all as if we did something to her. After ordering we got our food and we noticed the flavor of the food was half at best, but there was some sliver lining such as the rice and the Mano drink. There plate that was on the Atlanta Journal was underwhelming and overwhelming at the same time. There was not a care for the quantity of food on the plate, there just too much on one plate. Authentic, pleasant atmosphere, great quantity, nice extras. I went with Colombian relatives who have been there before and recommend it. The restaurant had a lot of other Colombians too, which must be a testimony to the authenticity. Compared with other Colombian restaurants, this had a more lively feel, helped by the brightly colored walls and decor (prints of Botero and Medellin scenes, chivas, and novelty items like candy and sodas from the home country). And the food--lots, and all the dishes you would expect--arepas, sancocho, ajiaco, pandebono, juices--all in great quantities and tasty. A youngster in our group had the "small" portion of bandeja paisa--ha! It was the size of an adult order, and when my order of the "regular" portion came out, it was huge! Definitely two meals' worth. The chorizo was tasty and everything else too. The beans weren't that warm, so that was one shortcoming, but overall, plentiful and delicious. We arrived today and someone took our Order then disappeared. Had to wave down another server. We got half our food and waited for about 15 min for the other half. The food was delicious. No complaints there. As we were leaving I gave them my credit card. About 10 minutes goes by and they came to the table said the system was down. They took the card again and after another 10 or so min wait I walked to the counter and asked about my card? Granted I understand this is a Colombian Restaurant but no one spoke English. She continues to speak to me in Spanish. Which I thought was rude . Knowing that I don't understand. Luckily there was someone a" customer " that translated for me. They wanted me to pay in cash. I had no cash. So they asked me to go to the atm. After a major inconvenience and a waste of quite a bit of my time. I returned back to the same person. Speaking Spanish to me.
