I hesitate writing this review for Las Marias - as I would hate for the word to get out how great it is!! This family run authentic Mexican restaurant is the picture of a local gem. Food prices are low and far less than they are worth - everything is wonderful! I usually go with the three soft shell alfresco tacos - choose your meat and my favorites are lingua, pastor pork, and chorizo. Love this place!! read more

OMG! This was fantastic! Passing through and stopped in based on the 5 star review. It definitely met and exceeded my expectations. A hole-in-the-wall location, Spanish music videos on the tele. Las Marias is a welcome change from all the cookie-cutter Mexican places that litter the area. Most of them offer more or less the same fare, which all tastes about the same. Las Marias is a little different. It's in a pretty dumpy looking little hole in the wall in downtown Athens. If you didn't know to be looking for it, you'd probably miss it. Inside is nothing fancy- But it's clean and comfortable. But we didn't come here for ambiance, we came here for FOOD. Las Marias prides itself on the Authenticity of its' cuisine. One thing that I have noticed here is that the crowd is usually mostly hispanic- Which is usually a sign of good food. They hand you a menu, which is in Spanish with english translations. At first glance, it looks like every other Maxican menu out there, BUT. Let's say you want tacos. You'll get a nice fresh soft tortilla, and bowls of chopped onion and cilantro to put on as you please. And, a choice of meat. Sorry, no ground beef- They do have Asada(Steak), Chicken, Pastor(spicy pork), Chorizo, and Carnitas (Pork). Or, If you're feeling extra adventurous, you can try the Lengua (Tongue, a personal favorite!), Cabeza (Cheek), or even the Tripa (Tripe). I have yet to try them all, but plan to (though I may skip the tripe). They've got a lot of other options as well- Of course they've got the obligatory Fajitas and Chimichungs to keep the "gringos" happy, but if you're feeling a little more adventurous you can always try something a little different like the Chicharron (Pork rinds) en Salsa. If you like fresh, authentic mexican food, you won't want to miss this place. read more

Yum! My boyfriend and I were starving after watching the solar eclipse, we stumbled upon Las Marias and were not disappointed! This little hole in the wall serves freshly chopped cilantro and onion along with chips and salsa. I had the chicken tacos; they come plain, with just chicken on a grilled corn tortilla so I added the onions and cilantro...delicious! My boyfriend had the cheese enchiladas: also delicious. How have I just discovered this place??? The food is excellent, and the people are super nice. The cabeza tacos are the best I've ever had. The guacamole is amazing!!! This little hole in the wall has the best Mexican food in Athens! The staff were very friendly and accommodating. First start out with chips and salsa. 3 different choices for salsa. I went with the mild red salsa because I'm a sissy when it comes to really spicy food. I ordered 3 tacos with the extra cheese lettuce and tomatoes. It cam with a little cup of creme fraiche and I could only eat 2 of the tacos but I sure took the other one home! Very authentic food. read more
