If you don't understand how a bout works you may have a little trouble. What I liked about it was the enthusiasm from the crowd and a couple of times the rowdiness of the skaters. There was a lot of lulls and not a lot of action so that makes it hard to want to pay attention to. What I didn't like was it was kind of hard to see especially if you were sitting down in the rows of chairs...so I actually chose to sit on the floor right in front of the rink which I wasn't crazy about. They play music the whole time which is cool but then the announcers try to talk and give you updates on the game and it's really hard to hear or understand what's actually being said. They serve beer drinks and even snacks but my suggestion is eat or get drunk before you go because they charge an arm and a leg inside the ballroom. You can't bring outside food or drinks in so if you go to the casino you can get a beer for two dollars Or stay in the ballroom and pay 7 to 10. It's not rocket science. I'll have to say it is fun to meet up with some friends hang out laugh and talk while watching something sort out on the side. It was their last bout at the Riviera as we all know it's going to be torn down so that was kind of cool in a little nostalgic. Hopefully the skaters will find a new venue to continue their tradition.

If you were ever lucky enough to catch RollerGames (1989-1990) on late night TV (as I did as a preteen), you know exactly what this game is all about and you can easily get hooked! On Saturday, April 25th, the Husband and I experienced our first real live roller derby match at the Las Vegas Roller Hockey Rink. It's located in the corner of the Commercial Center and can easily be missed, but it's there! Doors opened at 7 pm and the bout begins at 8 pm. You can choose to sit inside the rink on folding chairs, along the side on the floor, or safely behind the glass. Seats are up close and personal and they do promise the possibility of having a rollergirl in your lap! After the game, you can get autographs from your favorite players too! (There's a snack bar available too.) If you don't understand the game, they give out a handy little program with all the details, but the MC will also explain the game as it goes on. There's even a mini duel right at the beginning to give you a visual of what's about to happen. That evening, they played against the Arizona Roller Derby Tent City Terrors. Sure, we lost but it was a very exciting game and you never really knew who was going to win! Advanced tickets are $7 (although we tried purchasing such tickets the night before, but no luck), and $10 at the door. Kids under 10 and EMTs are free! This is definitely an athletic and family-friendly event, although a few of the players' names may be a bit suggestive. It looks like they have two local teams - The Notorious VIPs and the Tommy Gun Terrors. But when they play against another city, they combine into the Sin City Rollergirls. (Correct me if I'm wrong please!) The team colors of the Sin City Rollergirls are orange and black. We're definitely looking forward to catching at least one more game before their season ends!

I've always used what I've learned from their classes to two-step at Stoney's and Gilley's here in Las Vegas. However, at least half the time I've ever asked a girl to two-step, they don't know how, and I have to teach them on the spot. So, I've always wondered why these folks don't come to the two-step classes held every Tuesday at Rhythmic Souls. There was always this discrepancy wherein most of the people two-stepping at Stoney's and Gilley's were not in the Tuesday two-step classes. Fast-forward to today, and it's no wonder that two-step has been almost entirely abandoned at Stoney's Rockin' Country, and completely abandoned at Stoney's North Forty. I never understood why Stoney's and Gilley's never referred people to Rhythmic Souls to learn two-step. Now, all you can hope is that the current craze for country swing will run its course, so that two-step can return as the next big thing. When two-stepping at Stoney's or Gilley's, it's easy to teach a girl on the spot upon asking her to dance. This is why it's such a great social dance. It just requires the lead to know how to two-step, to guide the follower, whether she already knows how to two-step or not. I don't think this is the case with country swing. For the beginner, I think country swing is more dependent on lessons than two-step is--contrary to popular opinion. If it was up to me, Stoney's and Gilley's would have a list of local places to take two-step and country swing dance lessons. They should have been doing this from day one, then maybe we wouldn't see the near extinction of two-step at Stoney's and Gilley's today, in which country swing has filled the void. It seems like it would be mutually beneficial for the local honky-tonks to provide a list of local businesses that specialize exclusively in country dance instruction. Likewise, for the local country dance instructors to provide a list of the local honky-tonks where students can take what they learn in class and use it in the wild. Since this has yet to happen, Gen Z country swing now rules the local honky-tonks.

If you're thinking of taking up dance, I don't think you'll find a better studio in all of Vegas. Long Review: Where to start?? First off, I love love love Rhythmic Souls. From the first time I walked in, I felt such good vibes. Donnie and Regina are so nice and all the regulars at the studio are great about welcoming new people. I was insanely nervous and any negativity would have sent me running, but everyone was so incredibly nice that I kept coming back and now I'm a W/F West Coast regular. :) While I focus on West Coast they have a ton of other dances you can learn. I feel like the prices are very reasonable and the more you go, the better the deals are which is perfect for when you inevitably fall in love with the dance and decide to practically live there ;) Along with lessons, there are weekly trips to Stoney's, dance camps, insanely fun trips to dance events, potlucks, birthday celebrations, theme nights, etc. etc. To me, it feels more like a family than a dance studio and I am so glad I decided to take those first lessons. All I can say is if you're looking for a great, fun, positive environment to learn to dance, you can't go wrong with Rhythmic Souls, and if you're there on a West Coast night, come say Hi :)

I only found out about ETA from a buddy of mine who I used to play baseball with (he's an infield trainer here). He posted a couple videos here and dropped the name ETA on his instagram. Well, my son has one more year of middle school and then he will be going into high school baseball, so I thought why not get his some extra training here at ETA with my buddy. It's kind of hidden and out of site, but if you're in the baseball world I am sure people know about this place. ETA was pretty busy to say the least. All the cages were being used and my buddies infield clinic was going on too. The cages were full with one or two of them being used for the parents doing hitting with their kids, other had hitting instructors, and other infield instructors. After taking a walk around and taking a look at he place, I give it 5 stars. It's clean, its baseball decor is awesome!! They have a stadium on the wall with a scoreboard and some fans, its pretty unique and sets a good tone when you walk in. It doesn't have some of the fancy things I have seen at some batting cages but since the place is fairly new, I would only assume that will be coming in the near future as they continue to build the place up. When I say fancy things, I mean simulated pitching screen, etc etc. Either way, its a great start to the place here because everyone in here seems happy with their instructors, staff, and its a pretty friendly environment in general. If you're looking to start lessons for your kid (s), or looking for a new spot and you live in the SW part of town, look this place up and give it a shot. I think you'll be very happy with ETA and the results it may bring your child grows here at ETA.

It's a great annual event if you're a climber. The other reviews give you a pretty good feel for…read morethe event, so I'll just throw in some PROTIPS.... * If you want to get some real climbs in, come a week beforehand and let the party cap off your week of climbing, instead of expecting to get a bunch of climbing in during the event. * All the classic and easily accessible multi-pitches will be occupied during the event. No matter how early you get up. It seems like the whole West Coast climbing community comes out for this event. * Stay either on the strip in vegas or at the dude ranch and carpool on in to the event. No sense in camping with a bunch of snoring peeps, and people tripping over your stuff in a crowded makeshift campground dirt patch when civilization is less than 10 minutes away. * The actual red rock canyon climbing area (with the big scenic driving loop) is a separate state park from spring mountain ranch, where the event is held. If you arrive there for a clinic via an event bus, you're golden but if you drive yourself in for some climbing on your own expect to have to buy a day pass to get in. * If driving in to said area on your own and expect to exit after dark, ask the rangers that take your money for a 'late exit' pass so you don't get your car towed, especially if it's a rental. Let me tell you, getting a rental car out of impound will take all of your money and the rest of the weekend. You don't want that to be you. * Calico Basin doesn't really have any multi-pitch but it sees a lot less traffic than the other areas. You can successfully climb here before/after clinics during the weekend of the event. Trad climbers will be off doing stuff like cat in the hat and noobs will be over at the first or second pullouts doing sport routes. Come here to Calico for some easy to moderate TR's and some peace and quiet. * Register early. The best clinics don't have many spots and they fill up fast. * Get afternoon clinics so you can enjoy the all you can drink beer without having to get up at 7 a.m. * Bring cash. Lots of good deals to be had on climbing gear on-site and at the auctions. Unless you've got a REI 20% off coupon or some Moosejaw rewards points burning a hole in your pocket, I'd wait to pickup optional gear you might want until you get to the event. Ropes especially, man some of those Blue Water ropes were half off retail at the Blue Water booth. Obviously, bring what you need to climb - but if you were thinking about swapping out that crusty old harness or rope, you might come across some deals.

This is an annual event dedicated entirely to rock climbing outdoors, and brings in top climbers…read morefrom around the world, top instructors, and top climbing merchandise to buy. And, it all takes place in one of the top places to climb in the world, Red Rock Canyon. This event is great for all levels, as it provides a variety of classes and opportunities to climb. Many participants camp right there, so you will be able to meet other climbers as well. The classes range from multi-pitch efficiency, to rock rescue, to traditional climbing, to sport climbing, to beginner climbing, and to building traditional anchors. You can also hire guides to do climbs throughout the valley. The cost isn't much, especially for everything you get. The event also has food vendors, and there is a party Friday and Saturday night. The plush green grassy field hosts all the food trucks, and merchandise vendors, as well as a slack line pit, a miniature climbing wall, and areas to do yoga. The weather during this time period can be volatile, so make sure to bring warm clothing just in case, and make sure you stake your tent down, as wind sometimes happens. The event isn't always run the most efficient. Every year the buses to take you to your workshop have run late, but It is a minor inconvenience.
