When we signed the 12-month contract, I specifically asked what would happen if he lost interest. At his age, that's always a possibility. We were told by one of the coaches that early cancellation would result in a one- to two-month penalty. Based on that representation, we signed. After four months, we decided to withdraw him because we were not satisfied with the quality of his training. When I informed the school and the owner, Steve, that we intended to cancel, I was told we would have to pay half of the remaining contract balance. That was not clearly stated in the agreement as we understood it, nor was it what we were told at enrollment. When I raised this discrepancy, Steve stated the coach had been "misinformed" and "misspoke." After I remained firm on canceling, communication stopped. That raised serious concerns about transparency and accountability. The more troubling issue happened later at a NAGA tournament. After leaving Odin's Hall, there was a break in my son's training while we searched for a new academy. He then joined Cobrinha and registered for the novice, no-submission division (white belt, six months and under training). At the tournament, we were informed that a coach from Odin's Hall contacted the organization claiming my son should be bumped up to the beginner division (with submissions) because he had trained over six months at their gym and had prior wrestling experience. This was inaccurate. * He trained at Odin's Hall for four months. * We had email documentation confirming the cancellation timeline. * There was a gap in training before he joined his new academy. * The brief wrestling class he attended was actually a requirement at Odin's Hall for their competition team -- and all of their students participate in wrestling. What shocked me most was the attempt to move a seven-year-old into a submission division when they knew they had never taught him submissions. This tournament division was specifically six months and under, novice, no-submission for safety reasons. Moving him up would have exposed him to techniques he had not been trained to defend against. As a parent, that is extremely concerning. Youth martial arts programs should prioritize child safety and development above rivalry or competitive positioning.

This self-defense class took place at 9th Isle BJJ (stands for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu), which is close to North Las Vegas airport. I live in Henderson, so this martial arts studio was a bit of a drive from my house, but it was worth it! I was required to sign three different waiver forms that were emailed to me before participating. This place is in a complex that's mostly office space, but otherwise it's very easy to find off the main road. The inside is literally a warehouse, so while it was a little chilly when I first entered, I didn't feel chilly anymore once I started moving around. We were instructed by Professor Junebug (?), who owns 9th Isle BJJ with his wife. While I did have fun and got a nice workout in, at the same time it was a little difficult than the last self-defense class I went to, because most of the moves had so many steps to them and it was hard to process all of them at the same time. Three other instructors who worked there helped everyone guide us step by step and correct our moves if possible. Everybody there was very friendly and helpful and they all motivated me to continue taking self-defense classes in the future.

I had been searching for a Jiu-Jitsu gym for quite some time. I visited several popular gyms as well as some smaller facilities, but none of them felt like the right fit. I was looking for a place where people genuinely cared, where it was about more than just business. At one point, I started to wonder if I was asking for the impossible. I understand that gyms are businesses and need to make money, but at many of the places I visited, that seemed to be the main focus. There were different pricing tiers for everything, from basic packages with limited days to higher-priced options if you wanted to train more often. Then came additional fees as you progressed. It felt like there was a strong emphasis on costs rather than on the students. I don't mind paying, but I wanted the focus to be on building up my sons. I feel so lucky to have found Las Vegas Jiu Jitsu. It was another gym I planned to visit, but from the start, it felt different. We were welcomed warmly, without being pulled into an office to discuss fees. Instead, they simply invited us to fill out a waiver and let my boys try a class to see if they liked it. At other places, we were given tours or allowed to watch but actually participating right away was something we hadn't experienced before. Even better, there was no hard sales pitch afterward. They encouraged us to come back again, free of charge, just to see how we felt. My sons had no prior training and had never tried any martial arts before. They began training alongside kids of all belt levels in the same class. From day one, the owner, Professor Cresencio Zamora, encouraged the higher belts to look out for the new students. Those kids stepped up they guided my boys, practiced with them, and helped them feel included. I also really appreciated the structure of the classes. The coaches demonstrate techniques, and then the kids practice while multiple coaches walk around to give support and feedback. It creates an environment where everyone is learning and improving together. I truly believe that having students of different levels train together builds confidence, teamwork, and growth. It gives newer students role models and helps everyone push each other to improve. Since joining, my sons have learned so much and have built meaningful friendships at LVJJ. I have never seen any of the coaches act unprofessionally. What we found here isn't just a gym, it feels like an extension of our family. There is a genuine sense of community, support, and respect among everyone. Most importantly, I love what this experience has shown my sons. They are surrounded by people who care, who lead with integrity, and who lift others up rather than tear them down. If you're looking for a place with honest, hardworking people who truly invest in their students, this is it. Our family came to LVJJ after training at another gym, and the difference has been incredible. He's a unique, one of a kind person with great energy who always delivers. I love being a part of LVJJ. The environment is clean, I feel safe training here, they ARE and SUPPORT law enforcement, they make sure that everyone here is safe and taken care of inside and outside the gym.
