I have been going to Latham's since I was a little girl. My grandfather used to ask my brother and I if we had any money we said not then he said let's go get a hamburger. Back then the hamburger was 50 cents and we got a Coke from the cooler in the floor against the wall. It was so good. Then he helped us on the stools. We thought that was the most swanky restaurant anywhere around. To us that was the ultimate experience in food! I usually got 2 and my brother did too. Let me tell you it has not changed a bit and I am 70 years young. So that is a long time to continue to achieve excellency. I get a burger every chance I get. Old school burger joint at its absolute finest! This place has been bookmarked for a good while now. I always seem to forget about it when I travel through New Albany or I will show up and they are closed. It took C driving me here to finally make it in. I like to make stops in NA to visit Sugarees Bakery around the corner. I wrote them a 5 star review a couple weeks ago, but the Mods pulled it because they said I knew her. I hate that. They even pulled down decade old pictures as well. I digress.... But wanted to vent. No one cares. The day we came to eat it was packed inside. They had a big flow of to go orders along with every seat at the bar filled. We got lucky and slid in right as someone was leaving. Score! They seem to know almost everyone that comes in and their normal order. Love that shit! They sell something called a "Dough Burger". It's similar to a "Slug Burger" in the fact that it has stuff in it that cuts the amount of actual meat that is in it. This was a descendant of what poor folks were eating during war times I believe. Now for me, I would rather eat all beef rather than whatever the stuff is they put in there as a substitute. It's a simple place with great burgers. I have only had a burger and fries so I cannot speak to anything else. Now that it's on the radar mentally, I will run around the menu. Inside its lime time stood still and the world did not progress past 1982. This is so great and I am so in love with the whole vibe man. Food is great, god is good, let us thank him for making hamburgers food! They are well seasoned and cooked properly. You can't order by temp, but it's gonna be a juicy burger!! You bet your ass on that!! It has a unique taste to the meat. I think I know, but need to try it again to see if I can guess the spices. Just passing through and found this nostalgic place on Main Street. Great Southern Hospitality and a great Dough Burger.

Service was prompt and courteous. Clean Very nice atmosphere. Food taste great. It's been a favorite of mine for years.

The "doughburger" of "slugburger" is a must-try when in the area. This restaurant has a really interesting and storied history and there are tons of cool gadgets and antiques on display. Prices are very reasonable but when I went it was cash-only so be prepared. In my opinion there are better ma & pa burgers shops around, but for the history and unique experience Latham's can't be beat. read more

I was super excited to eat here for the first time in like 15 years. I sat at the bar and saw the cashier was busy and thought I would walk down and place my order there to help her out. This Karen that seems to be hoarding the burgers for herself snapped at me and told me to sit down she would be there in a minute which has been days now because I walked the hell out and went to George's down the street. So glad they have reopened under new owners. Same great hamburger though. I have eaten at Latham's since I was a kid back in the 70's when it was across the street. Fortunately the only thing that has changed much is the location and this one is pretty neat too. The crispy crust and the delicious center brought back good memories. Onions, pickles and mustard dressed is awesome! I like just a little mayo to boot. The restaurant has been redone including the kitchen and it is very clean. The "old" decorations on the walls are still there also. So glad they are back in business and look forward to going back my next time through New Albany! read more

Latham's is not your ordinary burger joint. THey have been around for decades and serve a regional delight known as a "slugburger" or "doughburger". Don't worry, there aren't any slugs or other invertebrates in the dough, it's called that because back during the depression the burgers sold for a nickel, aka a "slug". The burgers are made with a mix of beef, spices, and dough (it's a secret recipe) and are then fried crispy on the outside. It's definitely an acquired taste, but they are oh so good. Get them dressed - mustard, pickle, and onion. They also offer steak and cheese sandwiches and chicken tenders. The food is good, cheap, and served up quick. If it's your first stop make sure you let the guy behind the counter know so you can get your picture up on the wall of fame! Inside the seating is salvaged from the original railroad dining car location. Stools and the original counter complement the coke cooler (they still serve it in glass bottles). The wall behind the counter is lined with plaques with various sayings, see which one is your favorite. All in all it's a great place for a little local flavor in every meaning of the word. read more

This is a great, tiny burger shop. The type of burgers they serve are called "slugburgers". Don't let the name scare you, there are no slugs. According to Wikipedia, a slugburger is unique to the NE Mississippi area, consisting of a patty made from a mixture of beef or pork and an inexpensive extender such as soybeans, it is deep fried in oil. The burger tasted great and unique. The side of fries were ok. Atmosphere: long bar and a few 2-top tables. Many people were getting lunch to go. I ate in, the staff were polite and friendly. Love this place! What a wonderful surprise for me today - looking for a local restaurant to try and after seeing the reviews on Yelp, I decided to give it a try. I'm so glad I did! After speaking with the owner, I took his recommendation to get a burger fully dressed and a half order of loaded fries. What a delicious burger, crunchy on the outside but deliciously tender on the inside - very flavorful and juicy. And those fries!! Loaded with cheese, bacon and delicious ranch dressing to dip them in - sooo good!! I struck up a wonderful conversation with two ladies who were sitting at the bar, and then learned interesting facts about the city. Best slug burger place around. A local landmark and mainstay. They do have more standard fare now, but the slug is why visitors come. It's on par with any slug in the South and the famous Bourrum's in Corinth doesn't hold a candle to it. read more
