I'm a regular at Southern Hands and will recommend them any day. But on my last visit I'm assuming wasn't a good day for the team and my chicken taste as if it was prepared in burnt grease. The greens and yams were prepared perfectly. The service was a bit slow giving it was a Sunday after church and they were about to close within the next 45 minutes. This is a good place to get some home cooked food. Be warned, this is soul food and not the healthiest of options. It is not a grease spoon type of place put it may be hard to find low calorie options. Also, this place is quite busy but they lack servers and waiters so the wait will be longer than usual. If you love southern-style food, this is the place to be. I went to the Winchester location. I ordered the Catfish fillets with Mac and cheese and Yams. The Mac and cheese didn't stand a chance, I ate it up so fast it was cheesy and sweet. The yams were cooked to perfection, they melted in my mouth. The catfish needed more seasoning but it was crispy. Our waitress was nice but she kept complaining about quitting, the entire restaurant could hear her. I recommend Southern Hands if you want a decent Southern meal at a reasonable price. I ordered the smother pork chops with okra and bbq spaghetti (it's a weird Memphis thing, sweetish and meaty spaghetti--odd) plus a a fried chicken wing and filet of fried catfish. It was a lot of food (2 meals) for around $30. You can order online for pick up which I highly recommend since the dining room, area and service isn't great. Restaurant is located in a lot with a big event space--looked like it was out of business, but the good news is a lot of parking. Area is a little sketchy, but overall safe. From the outside the restaurant looks like a converted Dennys, but inside it looks like what I imagined the set up was for the pandemic. Most of the dining area is closed off and full of take out supplies. You order and pick up from a center counter, but get directed to check your order on a side table. Good thing I checked since they forgot my cornbread which got rave reviews. Maybe it was an off day, but I thought it just tasted like ordinary cornbread nothing like the buttery, sweet heaven other reviews mentioned. The food was great! I even liked the slimy okra, but will past on the spaghetti in the future. Their specialty is definitely fried foods. I ordered delivery twice. It was great. I get the three or four vegetable plate and an hour Xtra cornbread. I have also had the peach cobbler which is great. On one time the delivery service would not refund my money for the peach cobbler which Southern Hands were out of. I called and spoke with Rocky. She said if I am ever in person at the restaurant tell them Rocky said they owe me a peach cobbler. Now that's the character of a business. I recommend you try it. Call if you have a problem. Southern hands serves very, very, good food and cannot be matched for its southern food goodness, the cornbread is a perfect golden brown, chicken tender were breaded, fried and seasoned to perfection. The only complaints i ever have is the hours of their restaurants, you can never quite nail down the hours as they are constantly changing without being updated online or on their voicemail and getting them to answer the phone is near impossible. The cabbage has changed to a spicy recipe that is awful and the greens are gritty, as if they were not clean properly. The spaghetti has also changed to a really spicy dish (it's horrible). 1st time trying Southern Hands. I placed my order online, due I have a friend that visits here and from his talking about. You would like to call in! So i placed a online order, i received notification back stating order ready 30 mins. I left my house about 15 til on way there got notification order ready for pick up great I was about 3 mins out. I arrived there was a line inside at register, a worker aske was I placing or picking up , I told her I was picking up so she stated to proceed around to the other counter. I was thinking in my mind o yea finna get in and out. When i walked to other side the lady had asked for online order and walked off. The wait began i was there waiting to give name for at least 10-15mins. When she walked off, she was gone I understand they were busy but good grief comaback and check for names at least. I really think people are sleeping on Southern Hands but I love this place. It is consistent with food , and service. I can only think that maybe it's not promotion or due to location but it's great. People could get thrown off by the location if they want to,but the inside is nice , clean, very pleasant, music isn't blaring. It's just an overall southern sound food restaurant. The food there truly makes me feel like I'm back home in the southern most part of Mississippi where the candied yams are truly just that lol. The pork chop is filled with flavor and you want to be country and eat it with the mashed potatoes lol. I haven't gotten the sweet tea because I eat so bad that I get water so I don't feel bad for the southern eating u partake in lol. The last couple of times I've visited, service has been a little slow, so keep that in mind and bring a little patience with you. If you like soul food, then you'll like this place. I always enjoy the food and leave happy and full! My usual is the pork chops, but this time I tried the blackened catfish. It was very good and I'm glad I tried it. I had the pleasure of visiting this establishment during my visit and it was an absolute pleasure. Upon entering, the environment is very casual and the southern hospitality is in abundance. The hostess greeted us with a smile and was very pleasant with her greeting. We decided to order out so we took a seat at the wait counter and enjoyed the environment. The cashier was amazing. Her service was stellar and her charisma was infectious. She provided great customer service while allowing me to learn the history of the family owned restaurant. As far as the food is concerned! Babeeeeeeeeeeeeee! When I tell you everything on my plate was phenomenal. The meatloaf was moist and flavorful. The Mac and Cheese was soul food to the core. The rice and gravy took me back to my grandmothers kitchen and the kicker was the cornbread. I am so glad I ordered 2 of them. The cornbread was moist, perfectly golden, perfectly sweet, and bomb! The food is WONDERFUL; the service is THE WORST. This used to be my grandma's go-to spot, at least once a week. Sadly, Southern Hands has prioritized their own (monetary) interests over the service they provide their customers (in all honesty, I don't live in Memphis so I'm not exactly sure when the shift to 'online ordering only' happened (maybe covid?) but I used to call in orders for her and have family pick it up.). I know it's the way most businesses are moving these days, but it's utterly disrespectful that you cannot speak to anyone at this establishment unless you go to the restaurant itself. If you want to place an order, you MUST go online to do so (or go inside and wait for it). This method leaves many, if not most, senior citizens without the ability to place an order for themselves. This is an awful business practice, and it has left such a sour taste in my mouth that I am making it my mission to find other options in the area for my grandmother to patronize. Another thing that bothers me is that when you place an order online, you are bound by what they allow! They refuse to let you request modifications (e.g. I'd like my chicken fried soft, or my fries fried hard, etc...), whereas if I were able to speak to someone, I could ask for those things. Ordering online forces you to take your food how they want to prepare it, not how you'd like. Finally, you can only order delivery through DoorDash and pickup through an ordering service on their website, but here's the gag: the two menus are different! So, if you want to pickup your order, certain items aren't even available to order, forcing you to pay more for delivery or go without. In conclusion: I hope someone reads this, decides to make a change and take Southern Hands back to the good old days when they provided, not just great food, but great service to ALL their customers. read more
