There is no doubt about it this is the place to eat. Their barbecue sandwiches are absolutely delicious. But they have other options to choose from and I had the meatloaf, mashed potatoes and green beans the other day and that was the best meatloaf I have ever eaten. The whole meal was fabulous. I had a few other things and so far everything has been amazing. They also have meats you can buy and take home to cook yourself. The service is good and they are friendly. It's not a fancy place but it ids a nice clean place and you can eat right there. They have tables and chairs for eating right there. Check this place out you will not be sorry. read more

I found myself in Memphis on business and I'm a big bar-b-que fan. This was the second of 3 different bar-b-que joints I visited, for 3 straight meals. This was lunch on day two. Latham's was okay. It's a step up to the counter - cafeteria style joint. You move on down the line, and pick your stuff. Then you go and fine yourself a table. You also help yourself to the drink station, so there really is no "service" so to speak. I got a rack of ribs and a couple sides. May have overdone it. The food was good, but not as good as Reggie's. Ribs were a little dry. I can now say that I am not a big fan of Memphis Style Bar-B-Que. I didn't (until now) know the difference. Memphis Style is Vinegar based. Very watery. And the Ribs aren't cooked in it. They cook the meat in a dry rub. Then you squirt the bar-b-que sauce on at the table. I prefer the southern tomato based sauce, where the ribs are cooked in it. I also learned that there is a Carolina mustard based sauce (haven't tried that yet). read more

On a recent Saturday day trip to Jackson, TN, I was looking for a whole hog BBQ establishment and Latham's Meat was the only one that looked promising from YELP reviews. A new book by Rien Fertel called the One True Barbeque mentions Lexington, Henderson and Jackson, TN, as the location of a dying breed of BBQ establishments which specialize in cooking whole hog on open pits. I didn't have time to drive to Lexington so I gave Latham's a try. I tried the whole hog barbeque plate with the standard sides of barbeque beans and slaw. The barbeque was very well done with a smoky taste and barbeque flavor throughout the meat. It had a nice texture to go with the taste. The slaw was a sweet vinegar based slaw that complimented the BBQ. The beans were ordinary pork and beans, somewhat of a disappointment. The next time I visit, I will try other sides. The sauce is a thin vinegar pepper based sauce, more commonly used on whole hog style and found more often in South Carolina than this close to Memphis. It's a nice place, organized cafeteria style and has a very authentic looking pit out back. read more

While this place presents as a meat market on the outside, they serve a killer lunch. Huge portions. The BBQ is pretty darn good. But as a buffet style restaurant, it's almost like the school lunchroom. Not the cleanest, not the most comfortable, and not always the most inviting... but worth stopping in for the food. read more

Southern California-born, I have recently realized that the food I called barbecue my whole life is not, in fact, barbecue. Shocking, I know. What you do on Memorial Day outside with your family is *grilling.* I digress. From the outside, I was a little skeptical about my family-in-law's claim that we were going to have amazing barbecue. I glanced around the austere surroundings, and ordered a pulled pork sandwich with beans and mashed potatoes. I brought it tentatively to my table and took a bite. Okay, I can get used to this. The barbecue was good, though not amazing. The sauce, as others have said, is a bit watery and could use a bit more flavor. So why the four stars, you ask? Because I could have eaten and ENTIRE PLATE of their potato salad and beans. Ah-mazing. The staff was friendly, especially considering our huge group coming out of nowhere, and I would be thrilled to get a great sandwich and sides when I go to the butcher for my meat. read more

Solid Random BBQ joint in Jackson. I got a pulled pork sammy for $3.00 with a side of baked beans and couldn't have been more pleased. The pork was a little on the fatty side, but the smokey flavor was there. The hot BBQ sauce was pretty dang pleasant, not firey hot, but noticeable. The only drink size is jumbo, which I indulged in a sweet tea. (I felt my teeth rotting from my head as I drank it). Everyone here is really friendly, which is a huge perk. We drove into town to eat lunch with an old friend of my husbands and I asked if he could recommend a BBQ joint, he is a local after all. So glad he chose Latham's. The place is a bit of a whole in the wall but isn't that were all the good food is! We arrived shortly after 1 on a Wednesday and there was about 30 people waiting in line for to go orders. Lucky the line for dine in was short. I chose the 1/2 rack of Ribs plate ($14.99) and my husband got the same with a pulled pork sandwich on the side. Quality at Latham's has gone down hill very fast. Twice this year I've had bbq so salty I couldn't get through it. Sides are on a buffet. All fried sides are soggy from the steam. While I think it was a good attempt at being different, the overwhelmingly strong raw meat smell on the side of my bland bbq with watery more bland bbq sauce was not so great. So it's a butcher shop + bbq restaurant + corner store + deer proceesing/skinning place... cool yes. but the food was not so much. I think I was nauseous for a full day after. The people were nice, the mailman, police officer, etc -- everyone eats here. But the meat was flavorless and the bbq sauce was runny (I know it's a TX vs TN style thing...but just wasn't a fan). It wasn't until our office manager here in Nashville chose to have Latham's catered to a business event I attended in Jackson, TN that I even knew this place existed, even though my parents live there. I had to tell them about it. The spread was immaculate but it wasn't heavily advertised as being from Lathams; I looked on the sauce bottle to find that out. A southerner, I've tried a lot of BBQ in my life and I have to say, this rivals some of the best. Melt in your mouth pork, delicious baked beans, slaw, and potato salad almost as perfect as my mom's-- not too mayonnaise-y, and just the right amount of mustard. Complete with thick, warm cherry or peach cobbler for dessert. I do not live in Jackson, but when I visit there I may have to hit up Latham's for some good BBQ action. read more

Ordered the rib plate and was disappointed to say the least. The ribs were cool to the touch and tough. They had good smoke flavor but were not seasoned at all. Slaw was very good and the pulled pork was average with the spicy sauce. They pulled turkey was not good at all. We took a bite and none of us wanted to finish it. It was stringy and dry. Overall I was very disappointed with this place that had mixed reviews but took a chance anyway. Should have kept going west to Central BBQ or Germantown Commissary. read more
