Grew up in Milan and now live in Long Beach, CA. I can tell you when you move away from these parts one of the unrequited cravings you have is for an authentic Tennessee pulled pork BBQ sandwich with hot sauce and cole slaw (ask for that on a sandwich in California and wait for the funny looks). Milan and great BBQ are synonymous in my mind. From the time my family moved to Milan around 1962, The storied Silver Kitchen was the popular spot for the best pulled pig sandwich around. I'll forever remember the big hickory burning oven's you could see cooking up the next batch of perfectly smoked deliciousness. I also shall not forget the delicious feeling of naughtiness I got from eating in a place that served beer. OK, so after sharing my bona fides on Milan BBQ History this review is to recognize Smokin' Hot BBQ as a worthy successor to Robert and Joannne Appleton's legendary Silver Kitchen. Mark, the Smokin' Hot owner (LOL, I just called him that because I'm sure no one else ever has) is someone I've known since the first few months my parents settled in Milan back in '62. I've watched from afar all the hard work he has put into creating a great product and growing his business. On trips home my tastebuds always lead me to the SH drive-through. This trip home I've eaten several times in the new sit down restaurant and got great service and food each time. I'm sure they have some kinks to work out and I'm sure they will. Stopped at Walgreens to pick up scripts and saw this little place and since it was dinner time decided to stop in . Boy I am glad I did! I got the half rack of ribs beans and smoked cabbage. I got the regular bbq sauce on the side just in case I did not like it. They also offer a hot spicy one. Well the ribs were so tender they wanted to fall off the bone. The beans had chunks of brisket mixed in and the smoked cabbage was awesome. I loved the bbq sauce . If you are in the area you have to give them a try! read more

Unbelievable. Never have I been ignored and been treated so rudely at a restaurant. Stay away. Unless you enjoy an overcooked burger where the bun completely disintegrates in your hand. Was never asked if I needed anything else. Had to request a refill on my tea after slurping the last drops so I could swallow my dry food. Was never checked on at all. I've never had my food practically slid across the table to me with no comments and no smile. The two ladies working this evening acted as if they hate their job and hate anyone coming in to bother them. The cooks were the only ones that looked at me and acknowledged me. Never again. Used to eat there a lot, food is always good if you eat in! 3 times in the past few months got Togo orders, they can't seem to get a togo order right, or leave something out of bag! All three Togo orders were messed up! When I drive 20 miles round trip , it gets a little aggravating when you open a bag something missing and the order is wrong! I am a veteran with a service dog (very small) and was in there with my dog and we where sitting by the bathrooms and my dog was sleeping next to me. I asked for pulled turkey and was told they can't pull it, I ask why, she the waitress said because they can't weigh it. In town visiting a job site and decided to grab some Tennessee BBQ! The place was busy so that is always a good sign. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with hot bbq sauce, slaw on top, and a side of cheesy potatoes. The pulled pork was tender, had lots of smoke flavor and you got a decent portion of meat. I don't think I got the hot bbq sauce because there was no heat to the sauce. It had good flavor just no heat. The cheesy potatoes were good but just your basic cheesy potatoes could have used some smoke to give it a boost. The staff was friendly and I got my food quickly. Overall a good experience. Definitely a locals spot- When you go in you find an open table and the server will come take your order. This wasn't obvious and on a busy day/ we waited for quite some time before figuring it out on our own that it was first come first serve for the tables. I assumed people were waiting for a table or to go food, and realized after the 3rd table got taken by people who had arrived after us - that we should grab an open table. So not overly friendly staff, but also nothing negative to say. Food is hit and miss- sometimes the ribs are dry sometimes they are super fall apart tender. We get them with the dry rub, vs sauced. Sauce is Not spicy even the "hot". And it is very thin. All the sides are the casual canned style- even if homemade they are not super exciting. The white beans have pepper and those are pretty good. The slaw is crisp but nothing fancy on the side front. Brisket sandwiches and burgers are good size - but not homemade buns. Definitely look the menu over and order all that you want! I love their pulled bbq and baked beans but was not a fan of the pulled chicken or brisket. I haven't eaten in there, just have taken it to go. The staff was friendly and prompt getting order ready. It's usually pretty busy when I've been. I like that there is a drive through but it sometimes seems slow to use. I go in to get the food. read more

This is a small side of the road dinner. It not what you would call got to have BBQ. I would not drive out my way to get one of their Smoke meats. The good point is real smoked meat. They also have some other sandwich and side items I have not tried... The brisket is ok it has a smoked flavor it could use more rub flavor. It is still on the tougher side this why they chopped it. The BBQ pork is eatable. It not bad just plain. The side we had have no great additional value to the meals. Look to spend around $10 to $15 a plate. Service is on the lower side not bad just not great.it better than a fast-food restaurant and it on the main road if the drive-by. read more

Usually I love Smokin' Hot but have steadily been encountering issues. Today we ordered 'to go' 20 minutes before pickup and it didn't go well. Stopped to pick it up and had to wait another 25 minutes inside for the order to be put together. The drive thru was busy but only two tables occupied inside. Only one person seemed to even care That I was waiting and waiting... Got home with the order and didn't have the banana pudding we purchased. I would have let it go at that point but for the next thing. Two of the five sandwiches had small chicken bones in them. That's always fun to bite into those. Maybe it was an off night but customer service is definitely consistently slipping. read more

We've been recommending this place to people for a few years. We truly thought it was the best bbq we'd ever eaten. We ate there twice a week when it was just a drive up place because we passed by on our travels twice a week. We will never eat there again, not tell anyone it's the best bbq because it's the worst BBQ ever now since they moved into the bigger building. We we're literally shocked. We drove out of our way this weekend to eat on our way home from our of town. Ordered a jumbo BBQ where the meat literally did not even cover the bun. And it tasted like it had been held on a steam table. 3 Tbls of lukewarm beans were $2 and nothing but pork & beans with a lil BBQ sauce squirted in. No meat at all. Never been so disappointed in a place. Please consider a name change from Smokin Hit to Smokin Not. Sorry, but bad BBQ is not what we fondly remember. read more

In town just for the night passing through to Shiloh Military Park. Smokin Hot was close to my hotel so I thought I would give it a try. Very disappointed. Waitress never smiled until she brought me the bill. Had to get up to get utensils. Ordered a salad with hamburger steak plate and she brought the salad with the meal so I had to eat the salad while the steak and fries got cold. Other than the food was filling I can not say anything good. The waitress spent most of her time at the bar with the other waitress playing on her cell phone. I'd been here when it was a drive thru BBQ pickup place, but they've recently opened up a sit down restaurant. There is no signage to tell you whether to wait or seat yourself - so when a table was cleared (which took a few minutes,) we sat. And sat. And sat. Other tables were being cleared and other patrons were receiving menus but we got nothing, not even eye contact, and left after five minutes seated. Maybe they were understaffed? Overwhelmed? We seemed to arrive at the end of a rush, with a packed parking lot. Not a great lunch break choice if you have limited time. A sign explaining seating and menus left at tables would go a long way. Update summer 2017: Upon trying this restaurant again, they have added signage instructing you to seat yourself. I dont know how they win all the awards on their wall. Everyone else must have really bad barbecue. The brisket was tough and chewy and I had it chopped. I purchased $22 in food for my wife and i. I laid the remainder of $30 for her tip but ended up picking it up. That's how bad the service was! She had a snobby attitude. We asked for more sauce. Our waitress Kelli was friendly and efficient. The brisket and ribs were good but nothing special. My favorite part was the flavorful bark brisket end. The Sides of cheesy potatoes and were good but could have been a bit warmer and the beans were very good. The barbecue sauce was vinegar based, a bit on the thin side but it was very flavorful. Great BBQ in the best tradition of Memphis Style. The meat is super tender and juicy. One note is if you like the burnt edges, you'll have to ask for it. I noticed that SHBBQ throws away the browned outside of the meat. I especially like the sauce. It is a thin sauce, and is great to soak the meat while you eat. Stopped here on the way to family gathering in Trenton. Bought a couple of racks of ribs and several pounds of brisket. Traveling for work, staying in town at a local hotel. First night, I wasn't very hungry, so I ordered the sausage cheese platter. It was average and good, the sausage could use some seasoning but still good! The second visit I ordered the brisket platter. Very good brisket!!! I'm from southern Indiana and I have ate brisket from across the Midwest to the east coast.... this place is great for the brisket!!!!! Love it!!
