I hate to post this but I can no longer have this review stand unchanged. After a great experience with Laura for our wedding in 2016, we hired her again for a maternity shoot in August 2021. It is now March 2022 and we have not received a single photo. We paid upfront. I was very ill during most of my pregnancy so we have almost no photos besides this photo shoot, and Laura has gone silent on us. Laura is amazing. We've only gotten a small package of our photos back and they look incredible. I'll update this when we get them all. First of all, she's a breeze to work with. She's sweet and lovely. She kept the kids (there are a lot in our family) entertained and kept the adults smiling. She nailed the entire list we gave to her ahead of time of what shots we wanted and I know she snapped a ton of candid shots that are going to be amazing. Her pictures speak for themselves so I won't speak to them here. What I will say are the things that are super important to me: 1. She took the time to try to learn everyone's names, there are 30 in our immediate families and she was doing a great job and remembering people. 2. She is just fun. It's so much better to work with someone who you genuinely enjoy being around. I've taken my fair share of headshots over the years and I wish I knew about Laura back then. I know, from our sample size and our conversations that night, that she was spending the time to figure out what was important to us. 3. She dresses nice. It's always so weird to me when you hire someone to come to your wedding and they show up in some ratty outfit they scraped off their floor that morning. She blended in with the group...it's so important. And now that I've implanted this into your brain you'll forever notice the vendors who screw up this, seemingly, easy task. 4. It was in the mid-90's. Super hot. It was even humid...which was not fair. So she kept things moving, she made sure to take the temperature of the people she was shooting (not literally) and move on from one group to the next when it was clear that the heat was dragging someone down. 5. She brought her sister as a 2nd shooter. I don't know how often that happens or even what we paid for it, but I feel as though I should mention that her sister was also wonderful, sweet, and well dressed (it's really a sticking point for me.) 6. My entire family complimented us on our choice, saying how wonderful she was and how nice it was to see her smiling when not shooting. She never gave any impression other than that she was very happy to be there. 7. She really seemed to understand our wants. 8. The test shots are gorgeous. Okay, I said I wouldn't talk about the pictures but just real quick, she made me look good. My wife always looks amazing but I looked good once in 1995 and I haven't looked good since that day. Yet, somehow she made me look good. Maybe even great! 9. All of my friends are comedians (not in the "they're funny" sense, I mean they all go on stage and say funny things at people) and she dealt with us with aplomb despite the overwhelming confluence of larger than life personalities. 10. Laura Ford was a major factor in making our wedding absolutely perfect, and we can't advise you strongly enough to allow her to do the same for yours. She is professional, creative, caring, patient, persistent, a joy to work with, really really smart and resourceful - and did we mention she's an amazing photographer? Every aspect of our experience with her was perfect. Rather than provide a run-through of the day, here are some highlights: 1) She understands the nuances of the event. For example, next to our chuppah, we had a table with photos of our late grandparents. In several key moments, she pulled out just enough to include them, without our having to mention it. 2) She finds tiny details that others don't see - whether an alcove in a wall, a pattern in a carpet or a view of a guest through the flames of a fireplace - that elevate the photos to the level of art, while avoiding clichés. 3) She provided two assistants, one of which was her very talented sister, Sarah! She made us feel comfortable and got us beyond our camera-shyness, giving us many great smooching and nuzzling shots from which to choose. 8) She was totally collaborative, brainstorming with us and making sure to ask us what we wanted before the wedding, and executing it during the wedding. 9) Her photos just pop; the subject matter, composition, colors, lighting and focus all coming together to create images that capture the emotion of the day. 10) We could go on and on, but we'll end with one final point. It is impossible to overstate how much we LOVE Laura Ford! Photography was one of the most important parts of our wedding, so we started searching for a great photographer early in our wedding-planning process. We loved Laura's photojournalism style: from her portfolio, we saw that she's great at capturing fleeting candid moments that encapsulate the joy of the day. We also loved how her photos were not heavily filtered. Her photos looked fresh and modern, yet paradoxically also timeless and classic. We knew we wanted to have Laura as our photographer, so we set up a meeting with her before booking our venue. Within ten seconds of meeting her, we knew she was the one. She was so warm, fun, friendly, and approachable, but still extremely professional. Some wedding vendors can make you feel like you're just going down a factory production line with no personal interest, but Laura wasn't like that at all. She showed genuine interest in us and made us feel valued. We did an engagement shoot with Laura so that we could get to know her style better and get comfortable posing for photos together. We found a somewhat secluded area of Griffith Park that had a variety of backgrounds, and spent two hours there. Laura immediately put us at ease when we began the photo shoot. By the end, we realized that we had been laughing a lot and having fun. She very promptly gave us a couple of sneak-peek photos, and then sent the entire set of photos soon after. Laura shot our wedding in late June. She. Was. Fantastic. She and her second shooter, Neil, met us for lunch months ahead of time to get an idea of what we were looking for, our style, out must have shots, and to make sure we were comfortable with them before they tagged along on the wedding day. They were easy going and they had the experience to walk us through how they might fit into our day. Our wedding was in a church and our reception was on my folks property (a donkey farm). Laura really captured the relaxed, classic, hometown feel that we were going for. She was with us all day and got plenty of shots of our family and friends helping to get the tent up, hang tulle, set tables, put up lights, etc. They really turned out to be beautiful action portraits of all of the people we love the most. At the church Laura and Neil caught all of the major moments from various perspectives, which is amazing because I don't even remember seeing them! Following the ceremony Laura took a number of family photos which turned out beautifully. She had staked out the best places on the property for wedding party photos early in the day so as to be mindful of our time spent away from guests before the reception. She guided us through some traditional, some fun and funky wedding party shots. The entire experience was fun and stress free and we ended up getting even more photos than we thought we would have time for. Laura and Neil stayed for the entire reception and caught tons of precious candids of our family and friends in addition to many interesting shots of the food, center pieces, donkeys, property, anything to paint a picture of the day. I talked to a number of different photographers for our wedding before I sat down with Laura, and I immediately knew she was the right fit for us. Laura is the best! Our wedding took place in Topanga Canyon, but we live in Boston so it was important to us that our vendors were easy to work/plan with remotely. Laura was so responsive over email, quick to set up phone calls when needed, and we trusted her immediately -- even across the country. Laura obviously takes amazing photos (you can check that out on her website), but I think her biggest value add is in her personality. She is so pleasant to be around, and got along with all of our guests, family, and vendors. I wasn't great about knowing which pictures I wanted taken (of people, things, etc.) and she just jumped in there and took every shot I didn't know I wanted. I didn't have to give her any direction at all. Also, I was pretty nervous about having all of the attention on me on my wedding day, and she did a great job of guiding my husband and I through pictures (but not too much), in a really comfortable way. It's also worth noting that the Laura's assistant also had an amazing attitude (she was smiling ALL day) and took great photos! I am not a natural in front of the camera, and Laura was able to make me loosen up and feel comfortable with the entire process. She has a great eye and captured so many fantastic shots. Laura herself is very sweet and fun to work with. She is extremely talented, very responsive, and prices were reasonable. I would recommend Laura to anyone looking for a photographer. I was also on the fence about whether to do an engagement photo session. We eventually decided to go ahead and do engagement photos, and were so glad we did. We got to know Laura, have fun with her before the wedding, and get used to her shooting style. We have so many photos we loved from the engagement session, as well as the wedding. As a wedding coordinator, I love when my couples spend the extra time to vet and really choose vendors carefully and well to make sure their special day is truly amazing. Laura is absolutely incredible! I was initially drawn to her photojournalistic style, and when I found out that she splits time between California and the Midwest, it felt like a sign -- my now-husband and I are both originally from Southern CA, but have been living in Chicago for the past 5 years. I figured she would "get" us. I was right! From the moment I first contacted Laura, she made me feel totally at ease. There was a lot about our wedding that was up in the air -- we were only having 10 guests, and while we had a dinner spot booked, we were treating our ceremony as more of a guerrilla wedding type thing, since we didn't want to spend money on a venue when our ceremony would only take 10 minutes. Laura listened to our ideas and concerns, and answered all of the questions we had. She has an amazing "go-with-the-flow" attitude, while also being supportive of the decisions you want to make (and providing honest feedback and insight along the way). Her communication with us during the planning and execution of our wedding was fabulous -- she always responded promptly and thoroughly. On the day of our wedding, we had rain, trouble getting cabs, traffic etc...Laura remained positive and encouraging throughout. She is professional, but still friendly and fun to be around. She was adaptable, and thoughtful with regard the the photos she took. Our ceremony was maybe 5 minutes long, but she still managed to get a wonderful array of photos without us even realizing it, not to mention all the other photos of getting ready, first look, dinner, etc. Because we only had 10 guests, I was worried that a photographer would be the odd-man out, and make it a little awkward. That was definitely NOT the case with Laura. She was respectful, kind and engaging with our guests, while also making sure plenty of photos were taken. She pretty much blended right in to our party, and we loved having her there. She has a really fun spirit about her. She also makes the process of taking the more "staged" photos easy and smooth. At no point did my husband and I ever feel awkward or uncomfortable -- we felt like we could truly be ourselves in our photos. Laura was also timely in editing and getting our photos to us after the wedding. She even posted a little sneak peak on her facebook page so we could see a photo, which I really appreciated. Many of our guests commented to us after the fact that she was a joy to be around, and that we "lucked-out" with such a good photographer. They all loved the photos she took. I would HIGHLY recommend Laura to anyone looking for a wedding or engagement photographer. You will love her! read more
