Like some of the other reviewers, I had okay experiences here for a while, so I kept going. I heard horror stories from some of my friends, but figured I'd been lucky, the prices were right (sleepers for $4? Yippee!), so no harm no foul. So I bought some shoes there for my kiddo, who'd just started walking. One pair was fine, the others (sandals) didn't work out. Her heel slipped sideways out of them onto the ground with each step, and made her trip. Bad news! I misremembered their return policy and returned within 7 days. D'oh! But the nice and seemingly competent blonde gal behind the counter said no problem, I could still exchange them, I'd just have to come back the next day and talk to the owner. The blonde gal would be there too, and would explain things. So I come back the next day and the owner is totally rude to me, refuses to take back the shoes because they are missing the orange tag on the bottom, and basically accuses me of lying both about her employee telling me it would be okay, and that I even bought the shoes from her in the first place. She kept repeating, "I have no way of knowing these came from my store." And then she insulted her own inventory by saying, "I wouldn't have taken these anyway because they have scuff marks." She offered to take them in trade even though they were scuffed, acting like it was a big favor she was doing me. Now I'm not only mad because your employee wasted my time by telling me I should come back, you've also made me feel like a sucker for buying poor quality merchandise! Nice. I offered to exchange the shoes for a pair of less expensive shoes, and just eat the difference. Really, I just wanted a dang pair of shoes that would work, so what if I "donated" an extra dollar in the price difference. She would have made more money that way because she could have resold the sandals again. But no dice. She'd rather insult me and lose my business forever, I guess. I didn't give back the shoes in trade--I didn't want her making money twice on bad shoes. And I will never shop here again. I'll take my business to Fashion after Passion or any of the number of used kids' clothes places in Oakland. Sheesh. read more

Where do I begin??? I've passed this place walking down park st. quite a few time though I never had the urge to go in, as it doesn't exactly scream WELCOME!!! I have a 1 yr old baby boy and decided to sell some of his never been worn, worn once clothing. I came in with never been worn, tag still on, in original box, cute as hell, Burberry shoes, Burberry pants, Calvin Klein, Polo Ralph Lauren clothes & shoes, Puma shoes, Nike & Gap clothes.........you get the point. ALL NAME BRAND. So I gave the girl at the counter my bag and she asked for my name. (she called me Jessica afterwards which is nowhere near Nicole) As I was waiting for her to go thru my items I browsed their selection of less than mediocre quality clothing and nicknacks. Seeing absolutely nothing I would purchase for myself or my son. I wouldn't even purchase an item in that store for an acquaintance. Reminded me more of the Goodwill or Salvation Army (who will now be getting all my sons awesome clothing) Anyhow, the snotty girl who went through the clothes took absolutely nothing suggesting that those brands don't sell and that a few items were too worn. Apparently she is blind and has no sense of fashion judging by what she chose to wear today. Talking to me as if I were an idiot for even bring in my items. I really don't understand why this place is in business the owner must be a trust fund baby with nothing else to do so she has this place as a hobby (who knows) but let me tell you if that's how run their business they sure wont be there much longer with the economy the way it is, especially since they price things as if they were almost new. And as far as the little play area they have for the parents to abandon their children while they shop, Really?!?! No way would I leave my child unattended in their germ infested child play box. I like to patronize local businesses and so I hauled a big plastic bag of freshly washed, gently used, and nicely folded baby clothes to Lauren's Closet having seen the white board sign outside promising "cash for clothes". I figured I could make a few dollars and have some coffee at Peet's Coffee and Tea on Park Street with my earnings; Alas, it was not to be. Not only did they deny all of the baby clothes I brought (yes, including brand new, never worn clothes with tags) but they were extremely rude to me after I had waited around for 30 minutes. I had waited patiently only to be handed my bag and told "we don't want any of these". They offered no "thanks for waiting" or "sorry, we have a surplus on these items". I was shocked because I had seen similar items (same brand names and similar styles-I brought in Gymboree, Baby Gap, and Carter's clothing) and even some of the EXACT same clothes I had brought in on the sale racks! Worse still, the clothes I brought in were in better condition and not faded or stained like many of the items I came across on the racks. When I politely asked why the new items with tags were unacceptable the owner curtly said "I didn't sell many of those last year" and offered no consolation or "thanks for coming" or suggestions as to what they were looking for. My experience at Lauren's Closet was unacceptable considering how many nice children's stores there are in town including another comparable used clothes store on the West end, Fashion After Passion. DON'T SUPPORT THIS BUSINESS. They are building a track record of discriminating against People of Color!!! I called to confirm that they were indeed looking to buy women's clothes prior to coming in. Not only did these people failed to look thru my clothes after and then failed to inform me that they were done PRETENDING to look through my clothing. I waited and waited for them to call my name, 1 hour and $ for parking goes by. Everything was in the exact same order as when i brought them in -- meaning THEY DIDN'T TOUCH A SINGLE THING. Ugh. This place is just awful. Yes, you can get nice kid's clothing here for a lower price, but I'd rather cough up a little more money and get good service than shop at this dump! The teenagers that work there are rude and don't care about customer service, but who can blame them, the owner is awful! She has not patience with any kind of questions, she rips you off if you try and sell clothing, and once I was in the store when it was empty and they must have though I'd left because she said something very offensive which I do not care to repeat. As far as the things they have other than clothes, just go somewhere else. Toy Safari has had most of the toys they sell at Lauren's Closet, and for a longer time. I suspect the owner of LC does much of her ordering based on what the owner at TS sells well, in which I say to her "get a life and do your own work!" As far as stroller or cribs, Pippen Hill and Tot Tank have much nicer equipment and better customer service. Laruen's Closet, you suck. I brought in a bag of clothes to sell and they picked a handful of items and then said, "We couldn't buy more because of, y'know, the brands." I have shopped at Lauren's Closet once or twice per year for many years. I live about an hour away and do not visit Alameda frequently. I have never found the prices exceptionally fair, however, I do understand that one pays not just for the item, but the rent, salaries, insurance, etc. That being said, the prices are okay for a 'gently used' clothes store. My real problem is that I was in two weeks ago and purchased two summer dresses. One for a special occasion two days later. When I arrived home, I realized that the security tag was still on one of the dresses. I tried to pry it off, almost ripping the $10 dress. After 15 minutes of frustration, I called the store. I explained that I do not live nearby and the tag was still on. The clerk said, 'well just drive back and I can remove the tag'. I explained again that I live an hour away, gas is expensive, and this is only a $10 dress. Help! She repeated the same answer, 'well just drive back...' Really?! At this point I asked to speak to a manager. The phone was shuffled over to another clerk, very unlikely the manager. I gave it another shot though. This clerk offered the same 'drive back' solution. I said keep trying. She then suggested mailing it back, they would remove the tag, then return mail it to me. Too much trouble for me, the customer. She also said to try to remove the tag using a strong magnet or going into a local store and ask that they remove the tag. I do not own a strong enough magnet (yes, I tried). I also do not really have the time to drive all over town asking people I don't know to remove a security tag for an item from another store. The last thing I need is for anyone to think I stole the dress from another store. I asked for a refund, since the dress is useless. I was turned down. I was willing to send a photo of the tag on the dress to prove I wasn't just trying to scam Lauren's Closet. This experience, along with the rude, poor customer service will keep me frlom ever returning. read more

Best store ever! Great selection of designer brands & incredible customer service. I am so happy I went into this establishment & was able to find so many great designer items for the most affordable prices out there. I went in at 6:05 on a Friday night thinking they closed at 7,(they close at 6), & the owner was kind enough to keep the store open & told me to shop as long as I wanted to. Not only that, but she went above and beyond to help me find the perfect outfit for my party tonight. I'm so glad I spent my money at this local gem. I should've listened to other posts...brought in one large bag to trade and not one item picked because the items were "too old"...everything in that bag was bought 6 months ago, my sons clothes he grew out of and he's 6 months old...all nice things too mostly gap. I don't understand because even if my items weren't appropriate...why do they have 1) mostly old and tired/pilling/weird items for sale, and 2) such a reduced selection of things...ie I did not find a single long sleeve with snap crotch or onesie or pjs for 6-12 month old boy!! read more

I am going to give them about as much time as they took to decide not to buy any of the clothes I brought in: Quoting another reviewer (whose experience mirrors my own): "Came back in about [15] mins and the young girl at the desk said they looked through all my stuff already and wasn't taking anything. She looked nervous and wouldn't look at me when saying this, I'm guessing because of prior negative customer experiences just from reading other reviews. My box[es] [of] clothing looked [nearly] untouched." Seriously, there were a lot of clothes there to go through, and they barely scratched the surface. They might have looked part of one box and the top layer in another one, but given that I organized hundreds of items and lugged them in there (twice), they could have at least been more thorough. I would give them 0 stars. I used to love bringing my daughter's clothing here and she would take almost everything. The last couple of times she barely took anything or just passed on everything. Lauren's Closet - Store front to avoid. - Used, Vintage & Consignment Near Me - Alameda, California

I went in here with my children today, we're from out of town so we're exploring this neighborhood wasn't adventure and this is one of our stops. Everything was clean and orderly, priced fairly considering most of the items are used in somewhere, but the new items are a nice addition to a typical resale shop. Very cute knickknacks, lots of things for the kids to ask "mom I want it I want it!?" I've seen many unpleased sellers on yelp, I don't think that people understand the nature of buying for a store, and that what you're bringing and my not be what they're looking for, just because something is new doesn't mean that's what they want in the store. I can't say I'll return again, cause were not from the area. But if I ever happen to be in the area again, and have time to browse, I will definitely make it a point to stop in. As a buyer, I give them 4 stars. The clothes are hit or miss, but usually you can get some cute stuff for affordable prices ($4-$8). They have a fun mix of clothes (perfect for newborns with $1 onesies), toys (pretty pricey), books, games, etc. for a variety of ages. They even have some maternity. As a seller, I give them one star. I went there today with a huge bag of clothes (some of which I had actually bought there previously) that were clean, in season, and some brand names. The woman told me she was only taking a few items for $12.60 store credit. I was a bit shocked she was giving me so many back, including a ton of short-sleeved onesies, you know perfect for summer. The warmer stuff I get because it's out of season,but short-sleeved onesies? I asked what criteria they used for next time, and she said they buy combos instead of single pieces. Really? Well, then why is most of the stuff I buy from you single pieces? And how would anyone present a combo outfit, if they're gently used? It just doesn't make any sense. read more

The first review for Lauren's closet in 2012 and it's sad to say that not much has changed. I first stumbled upon the closet after I had my little one and was even more surprised to find they purchased used clothing. *SCORE* So, when the time finally came, I brought my boys clothing down and hoped for the best. I walked around the store for about 2-3 minutes and It took all of 45 seconds for the blonde manager to reject my clothes stating "we only take Gymboree, GAP and clothes like that." Well, in my bag I have Rocawear, Polo, Ralph Lauren Polo, Rocawear, and Timberland brand clothes as well as Disney and other well known brands. Didn't matter. She didn't want them. Didn't look. Didn't care. I asked her again what it was that she was looking for as I had called the store the previous day to make sure I had what they were "looking for" and she turned and gave me this look. I told her that before I had come to her store, I had read the reviews on YELP and was hoping that I wouldn't experience what others did as far as the way she treated her customers. She took this to offense and began to walk away even though I was still talking to her (in my inside voice) I never once raised my voice and I actually feel sorry for this woman if she IS the owner. Whatever it is thats going on at home could possibly be surfacing at work. Its unfortunate that such a gem of a store has such a grinch of an owner, but hey, there are more stores and more than enough opportunities to sell my stuff individually. I wish Lauren's closet the best, but I won't be returning. Take my (and others) advice. Save yourself the aggravation--go shop somewhere else. This is a bit redundant, considering how many other reviews we already have for this shop, but... I have to add my 2 cents. As for the quality of the clothes, toys, and the shop in general: 4 stars. I often find many adorable, high-quality clothes to buy; I enjoy shopping here. As for the costumer service: 2 stars. I often find the young women working here to be friendly (although that isn't always the case... Sometimes there's a bit of a "we're too cool for school" kind of vibe with them). Lately I've had consistently positive experiences with them, though. The owner lady is completely hit and miss. Just as others have said... I do believe that she's simply not a genuinely kind, friendly person. She may have a good head for business, but not so much for people. As for selling clothes, I have had a MISERABLE time trying to sell anything! It's actually been a huge downer. I, too, have waited for long periods of time only to have them take NOTHING that I brought in. Today was the final straw. I will never bother to haul in bags of clothes (plus my two little kids!) only to have them take not one single item. It is a ridiculous waste of my time, and frankly it is now pissing me off. Today they said that my stuff was too outdated (that might be true, most of it isn't that *new*) and too "worn" -which is NOT true! All the clothes that are too worn I donate to charity or turn into rags or play clothes. I would never attempt to sell anything that was old, faded, stained or thread-bare. That was ridiculous and insulting! Honestly, it must have been a "line" they use, because that was not at all true of my two bags of clothes. (Some of the items were cute handmade sweaters by my friend's grandma. While others were new baby clothes from Europe that my 10-month old barely even got a chance to wear. New items from France, Holland, and Belgium are too "out-dated and worn"???? I think not.) Ugh. I love the shop and I will continue to shop here, but I'll never bring in baby clothes or maternity clothes again. I have (finally!) learned my lesson. read more

Purchasing Baby Clothes: I really like coming here to find clothes for my daughter. Of course it can be a hit or miss shopping trip, but Spending $30 on numerous pieces for my daughter vs. 1 or 2 outfits is well worth the time and value. Trying to Re-sell: Not Happy with this experience. I brought some pretty cute pieces, even some I bought from there. I recently cleaned out my daughter's clothing (I had 2 shopping bags full) most items were worn just 1 time. My daughter hit a growth spurt, so I thought Lauren's Closet! I went in on Tuesday, around 10:30am, and was told the buyer was on vacation, and would return tomorrow. I waited until Thursday, as I came from Oakland. I went in (being told she would be in) and was told the buyer was not in. I seemed upset enough I guess, that the worker asked me if I would like to leave my items, the owner would go through them, and call me when she was done. I agreed, and left the bags. About 3 hours later, I was called and told the owner had gone through the clothing, and did not want to purchase anything. When I got to the car, I realized she had only looked at the top clothing pieces, all of the clothing from half way down to the bottom was still folded, the owner didn't even look at everything! I will never shop this store again, and if any of my friends ask me, I will tell them of this exact situation. It is a complete inconvience to be told to come back again, and again. The store and owner has zero courtesy for customers. In all the years I sold/traded with Lauren's Closet, I had never had every single item rejected. I would avoid this store at all costs if you have any items to sell/trade. It is not worth paying for parking, ironing and folding all of the clothing as she requires, just to be told she doesn't want anything. read more

This is such a mixed bag! Sometimes the owner's scowl could curdle milk. Sometimes she's really nice. You know the old saying... "If Momma ain't happy - nobody's happy." Sometimes they buy DD's used clothes. More often they don't, even those barely worn or unworn-with-tags, even seasonless items like jeans. I learned a long time ago not to get my hopes up. Sometimes we find major scores - the abercrombie sweatshirt, the Juicy jeans, the coveted Ruby Slippers back when DD was 4. Sometimes the pricing is great. Sometimes they ask $6 for a used T-shirt from Target or Kohl's... and it probably cost $6.99 new. Sometimes we find holes, stains, rips, stretches, busted fasteners, and scuffs. How could they not see them, with such stringent standards? I'm baffled. DD loves this place because she is young, naive, and full of hope. Bless her little heart. We usually leave with at least one item. I miss the chair by the dressing room. I used to spend a lot of time there. Now I stand, or wander off to the bookstore for 1/2 hour. All in all, it's worth the trip, but not great for popping in to get something quickly. Takes time to sort it all out. A recent positive move - bringing in the florist -seems to have perked up the mood a bit. At least, my mood. :-D The floral designs are lovely. Alameda definitely needs places like this or, considering the wildly varying reviews, it would have shut its doors long ago. A consistently friendly manager, clearly stated policies, and more professional staff would make this place a lot more successful. The shop is huge, got huge selection of books, and used clothes and used shoes. However, the pricing is kinda outrageous. $22.50 for a raggedy Mini BOden dress???!!! I can get that online right now during their summer sale!!! Lots of good brands, like, Gap, Mini Boden, Land's send, some are not in very good condition and for the prices, I can actually get them at the retail stores when they are on sale! I was gonna get the Harujuku lovers t-shirt for $5, but it was a bit raggedy, so I passed. read more

Whenever I read bad reviews I often wonder if the writer just has some axe to grind, but just like so many others I'm really surprised by the poor attitude of the staff at Lauren's Closet. I've been in this store at least 20 times and have purhased plenty of items. I've always recieved an attitude of indifference or apathy. This weekend was the final straw. I came in the store with my 22 month old son, and after buying him a toy I had the apparent nerve to ask if they had a bathroom with a changing table (imagine that in a store for infants and toddlers), the young women working the register acted like it was some kind of insult to even inquire. Just really rude for no reason I could detect. So, I crossed the street and was able to use the restroom at another, much friendlier children's store where I'll shop from now on. So why 2 stars? The place does have a decent selection of new and used items, but with at least three other similar stores within just a few blocks, it's not worth the hostile attitude. Do I wear a size 2? no. Do I need 20 hello kitty key chains?? no. But if you are 13, then this place is a treasure chest filled with stinky gems. Lauren's prides them selves on having the brand names for a fraction of the cost- thus only accepting only the prime of the thrift that actually comes in there from the public. To go with those thrifty finds, you can also pick up some hooker heels and a pimp daddy cell phone charm with a few other nic naks that find their way into this store. Nether the less, I always find my self shuffling along into this store to pick out some new sun glasses and perhaps a bracelet or two. read more

Despite your occasional find this place is terrible! The employees are in no way helpful and are extremely pushy and rude. The moment you walk in, they stare at you. One time I found a shirt from Wetseal That had rips in the side. Its amazing how they take piles of crap, then when you try to give them your unused holliter clothing, They rudely tell you it isn't fashionable and won't "go". (True story happened to my friend) Some of their stuff is really too pricey for what it is, and for a used clothing store some of its prices are more expensive than it would be at the actual store. Once more I would like to tell you how bad the employees are. There are a bunch of ugly little 16 year old girls. Preps to be more exact, and the couldn't be more bitchy. They follow you around and immediately fix things that you put out of place. I once asked one of them if they could get me something from off the wall and they told me to hold on. I love the concept, but the quality of the resale clothing is sub-par. I purchased two dresses for my daughter. Once was grossly mis-sized (the tag said one thing but she wasn't able to get it over her head), and the other had a huge 3" tear. I called the store to ask if I could return, but was told I could just have store credit. Thanks, it took me an hour to find these two "jems", and now you're telling me I have to search through more crap to find acceptable replacements? Hmm... Maybe your staff should inspect the quality before you put it on the shelves to begin with. Other than two completely unusable items, the rest was great. Friendly staff, nice selection of new toys, larger space than I expected. There's even a play area to dump your kids while you shop. Just double check all your purchases before paying. read more

Recently stopped by after being recommended by some moms I know to pick up stuff for my future little one. The store was nearly organized and the clothes were easy to sort through. Most onsies were $1.50 and socks only $.50, the girls and boy stuff were next to each other but sorted by age group - mostly around $4-$6 range. I was literally on a mission to find what ever I could. The woman working were polite to those who had questions and I felt comfortable taking my time. There was no pressure on me to buy anything, even though the adorable clothes I found seemed to fill my basket up quickly. I was able to find a maternity jacket, two skirts and a nice top. I can see how the selection would vary day by day, or week to week. I plan to stop by a few times more before my baby is born. read more

Not bad for a small shop! Has potential and room to grow into something cool and hip. I stopped here before a mani-pedi from Lisa's Nails next door and was pleasantly surprised at the variety of choices in clothing, accessories, gifts and shoes. I got two pairs of dress shoes for $20! First is a strappy silver number, the second is businessy black pumps with kitty heels. The clothing selection seem lacking at a glance- not quite the Cross Roads caliber. I am among the (seemingly) few people that have had positive experiences here. The owner and her staff have always been pleasant enough (I'm certainly not expecting over-the-top fake friendly, which it seems like many people want in a store) and helpful. We've purchased one of their new strollers (which was quite a good deal) and various baby-related stuff here; I've also sold maternity and baby clothes. When I sold, I went into the store knowing that the buyer was going to be scrutinizing my things...to be fair, wouldn't you do the same thing if you were a business owner? She rejected quite a few of the baby clothes, which were very cute, but on close inspection, they had minor flaws, so I get it... she's just doing her job. She did take a lot of the maternity stuff, which I will admit was nice (I am a working mom, and have to look decent at work) which has been put on consignment--something you should know if you are thinking about selling maternity here, i.e., you don't get any $$ until your stuff sells. As a result of her choosiness, second-hand shoppers have a great amount of things to pore through, and good prices for very gently used baby and kids' clothes. I can't really speak for the maternity (except for the stuff I just sold, which is awesome, duh) because I didn't shop there when I was pregnant. The new toys and baby gear are on the pricey side, but go on a good day and you may be able to find a great deal on a used Baby Bjorn, sling or stroller. The owner definitely doens't have the best customer service but they younger girls that work there are always really friendly. This place always has super cute baby clothes in the best brands only! They are a bit picky with buy backs, but I guess that positive when you are shopping! It's easy to get over the so-so customer service for the cute clothes I find here. Updated 5/09 I have been to Lauren's Closet probably 20 more times since the first review. I go here about once every two weeks and like it a lot. I shop in the junior's section, and almost always find at least one thing I like. The prices are usually reasonable (but can get somewhat high depending on the brand). I find the employees helpful, although I haven't had any run-ins with the owner. Whenever I try to sell clothes here, they rarely buy them. It's hard to believe because I only offer them name brands I see around the store (such as Abercrombie & Fitch, Old Navy, and Hollister). read more

I went in the other day for the first time and bought a cute sun dress. If I'd had the patience I probably could have found a few more items, so the selection was ok although certainly not dazzling. The woman behind the counter was extremely friendly. The two lacking stars are for the fact that Lauren's is missing a certain "je ne sais quoi" in both the store layout and the selection of clothing. Don't know why this place doesn't get better review. My friend who lives in Alameda builds her wardrobe from this place. I like the mix of different items for the whole family. Everything is neatly laid out. Hard to believe that it's consignment. Great deals, so this will be one of my regular shopping stops in the upcoming year. read more
