This is one of the nicest places at the shore. The coffee is great, as is the food, but what really makes this place is the vibe. They have a group of cheerful, helpful order takers and servers who are not just a pleasure to see but who are also very efficient. They keep things moving, even when the lines stretch out the door -- which they often do. Sip your coffee and eat under the bright beach umbrellas out front. I absolutely love it here, as a local I must warn you that the wait times in the summer are slightly longer since lavallette is a huge tourist destination but all in all they rank as my all time favorite coffee place!! I go a few times a week and the staff is insanely friendly and fun - I love their eco friendly options (they'll let you refill your own mug and offer straw alternatives if you aren't into plastic straws). I haven't had the coffee here but I went here for lunch with my dad a few days ago. -My dad had: the tuna-fish sandwich, which you could get with a side of colelslaw, side salad, macaroni salad or chips with salsa ($7) - I had: Cobb salad ($10) - romaine, bacon, egg, cheese, chicken, avocado ($10) We ate in. My dad really liked his tuna sandwich, which came on rye even though he asked for multigrain bread. The chips and salsa were really good - the chips were warm and crispy, and there was a healthy side portion of salsa. My Cobb salad was a big portion, with tons of romaine, a single boiled egg cut in half by the sides for garnish, a healthy amount of bacon, a few slices of avocado, tasty, well-seasoned bite-sized pieces of chicken breast chopped up and fried on the grill and some multi-coloured Cheddar-ish cheese clearly from a bag sprinkled on top. I got two lunches out of it because I took it home. The reason I am giving this place 3 stars is for two reasons: 1) When you pay at the register, they pretty much force you to leave a tip. There is no waitress service at Lava Java, just people who bring the food out to you after you order at the register. And by force you, I mean if you pay by credit card, there is no way you can get out of it. The screen brings you to a page that asks you how much to you want to tip starting at 15%; there's no place to bypass it, plus the girl on the cash register is looking at you while you put in your selection. The prices are super cheap, but everyone in there should be getting at least min wage. At the very least, forced tipping is really tacky. Put your prices up if you have to, but gratuity is based on service, not because you dont pay your employees enough. 2) The Cheddar cheese in my Cobb salad was from a pre-shredded bag. Firstly - a Cobb salad comes with blue cheese (and tomato for that matter). Secondly, if you must put Cheddar, at least grate it yourself. Bagged cheese is not a 5 star experience. Plus, the hardboiled egg had a sulfur-ring center. But - the place has potential, I understand struggles of small businesses so I am trying to give some constructive criticism, and I wish them well! read more

It's definitely not a place for the people who want to get in and get out...it's cramped, loud at times, and a little unorganized, but none of this detracts from the overall quality.
