I had an odd experience at Lavender Retreat a couple weeks ago. I scheduled my appointment several days ahead of time, communicating with the spa over phone and email. The woman I communicated with - who I think was the owner - chose my appointment time, but when I got to the spa it didn't seem like anyone knew I was coming and didn't treat my appointment as I expect they normally would. I emailed the same address that I'd previously been in communication with after my appointment, and never heard back. I'd booked a 50-minute facial and 50-minute massage. When I arrived for my appointment, the woman behind the desk thought I was there for acupuncture, and when I said I was there for a facial and massage, the masseuse asked me whether I'd like a 30-minute or 50-minute massage. They rushed me through the check-in process, and I wasn't offered anything to drink or to put my coat away. I hadn't even finished undressing before the masseuse asked if she could enter. When I said I was still undressing, she asked again 10 seconds later. I was very unrelaxed when the massage started. The masseuse didn't ask me what type of massage I'd like or if there was anywhere with specific pain. The pressure was good, but it didn't seem like it was cohesive. I've had several massages, and she was moving her hands very fast and was jumping into different parts of the body, rather than it flowing. She also never had me turn over. For the facial, we didn't discuss my skin before she started and what she would be doing. The only thing she asked was whether I was allergic to anything. When I checked out, the girl at the front desk seemed extremely rushed. I mentioned that I'd given my credit card over the phone, and asked if it had already been charged, and she said in a tone, "Oh, you made your appointment over the phone?" Which again made me think they weren't expecting me. I asked about packages and she pointed to a sign, and said in a very annoyed tone that I could read about them there. I saw the masseuse and front desk woman lock up while I was waiting for my Uber, so I checked the spa hours and saw my appointment had been scheduled to run past closing time. Again, I didn't choose my appointment time, and it should have been communicated to the front desk or not done if a customer wasn't going to be treated the same for it. I've been looking for a spa in the neighborhood that I could rely on. Massages and facials aren't cheap, and I was treating myself. I was disappointed with my experience. read more

I am a bit of a spa junkie. This week I had the distinct pleasure of enjoying three services at Lavender Retreat. Where do I start...the spa itself is calm and relaxing. The colors, decor and seating space on the first floor are very appealing and calming. The service rooms are lovely and calming. It's been more than 8 months since my last massage and the masseuse got in deep and provided much relief to my aching neck & shoulder. I had acupuncture and the therapist was very kind and gracious. My husband and I found this place on a whim, looking for an afternoon of reiki and massage near our home. Jaime, the owner, somehow pulled together a masseuse, an acupuncturist, and a reiki healer together for us in a few hours and it was so relaxing. We've been seeing them for all of these services ever since and it's truly a wonderful place. I was referred to Lavender Retreat by my neighbor who had previously had a few accupuncture sessions. She raved about the quality of services and the beautiful enviornment. She was exactly right!!! Frances is the best accupuncturists that I have ever come in contact with and the physical environment is exquisitely decorated. I did their integrated package and it was a fantastic experience, well worth your money. With the integrated package, I got 5 weeks of acupuncture as well as at least one visit with every other member of the staff and I don't have a single complaint. I came down with the flu with 102 degree fever. I couldn't make my scheduled massage, and I called the morning of to try to reschedule. As it didn't fall inline with the 24 hour cancellation policy, they charged me full price. They refused to work with me or understand the situation that flus can come on very rapidly and it's hard to predict the future. They did try to offer a 50% discount on a future massage (after they already took my $170). I find this really lacking in customer service and turned me off completely from ever going back again. Lavender Retreat would rather keep the $170 for the one time vs having a repeat customer that can recommend the place to other friends. This is truly poor business practice and not smart. Additionally, purchased a 10 package deal for 90 minute massages. I realized after purchasing that there was no incentive to purchase this package as the massages were not discounted and there was not an extra massage provided. Save yourself the large upfront cost and don't purchase the package. They make it sound like it's a deal and they will give you a longer massage, but that is not true. Pay for your massage as you go. It's the same price. They want you to buy a package so they can make a large upfront profit. read more

I was pleasantly surprised to discover this healing space when i relocated to the area in 2015. Now my weekly regime includes going to this space that Jamie created to restore myself. The therapists are wonderful; these days, I go to Dr Nathalie (Reiki and Reflexology), Frances Lutz(acupuncturist who led me there), Linda and Bonnie for wonderful massages. I called to book a 90-minute Couple's massage. When we arrived, I thought the decor was nice and relaxing. After filling out our forms we were called back individually by our therapist. I didn't think much of it, as I figured we would meet back in the couple's room. When I got upstairs, I realized that I had my own room and not be joining my husband. When I mentioned the mistake, my therapist went downstairs to check and said they only had us down for individual 60-minute massages. The massage was rushed. Also my therapist would often leave me to go get lotion for longer than it should have taken. She also didn't seem to have focus...she would rub one body part, then another, and then come back to the same area. It was the worst experience we have had. My husband concurred. After the massage, no offer was made to remedy the situation, even after we expressed our disappointment. We recently moved to the area and was looking for a place to get regular massages, and after reading the reviews was hoping to find a peaceful spa. This is not the place for us. Edit: I just received a phone call from the owner moments after leaving this review. She offered 50% off our next visit. I appreciate this, as she is trying to make it right and she also apologized for the mix up. After dropping over $300 after tipping, and not being relaxed, we are not willing to go back. read more

I am a recent client at the Lavender Retreat. I was suffering chronic foot pain that affected me whenever I walked. My podiatrist diagnosed "hammer toe" and recommended a different kind of shoe and offered only surgery as an option if that did not work. After the new shoes gave only limited relief, an acquaintance told me about Lavender and their reflexologist who works miracles with foot ailments. I called and made an appointment. When I met with Mr. Kong, he listened carefully to my complaints, asked questions, and examined my feet and legs. He said the problem was not just in my feet but also in my muscles, the alignment of my lower body, and my circulation. Dr. Natalie Boulaware turned me into a Reiki believer. Prior to my session with her, I tried Reiki with someone else and didn't feel anything. I was disappointed and left wondering why it even exists. This time around, I discovered Lavender Retreat and decided to book a session with Dr. Natalie, a naturopathic physician. As the session proceeded, I felt the energy flow inward, outward, and throughout my body under Dr.Natalie's skillful guidance. There were certain areas of my body that felt really stimulated and during our debrief she confirmed what I felt during the session without me even mentioning it. She explained to me the correlation with the chakras to the internal functions of my physical body and explained how to heal the chakras that were deficient. Why choose this service? Because sometimes we don't realize we are ill until it's too late. Now, I understand the meaning of integrated and holistic medicine. I will provide an update next year. read more

Seeking and searching are a staple of the human condition; it's why I chose to schedule a Reiki session with Dr. Natalie at the Lavender Retreat and Spa. I scheduled a 90 minute session on a Friday evening and could not have been more pleased with Dr. Natalie's professionalism and grace. I have an Ivy League PhD (Go CU Lions!) and didn't know what to make of this "wonky" therapeutic experience before going in; however, it far exceeded my expectations and I would recommend Reiki to anyone -- just don't go to the Lavender Retreat and Spa if you're a young in appearance woman of color. The bookends of my service (i.e., greeting and close) were so sullied by the owner Jaime Bohl's implicit biases that I will never return. In the spaces of mere minutes upon entering and departing, Jamie displayed micro aggressions toward three of my most critical and intersecting identities (i.e., gender, age, race). I'm aware that this may be an unfamiliar or distancing term to my fellow Yelpers, so allow me to explain the damaging effects this encounter had on my Reiki experience. Chief among the cumulative harmful effects of Jamie's micro aggressions is that I left the Spa with what several textbooks conclude is the wrong energy for next steps after the session. So that I may continue writing this review assured that we share a common understanding of the term, "microaggression" was used by Columbia professor Derald Sue to refer to brief and commonplace daily verbal, behavioral, or environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial slights and insults. This is precisely what I experienced from Jaime. For example, Jaime failed to provide the most basic welcome / first time guest niceties such as an offer to take my coat, water, or providing instructions on where the restroom was EVEN AS I overheard her doing this for two other customers. After the session, she suggested that I stole her pen. Yes, it's bizzare and no, I didn't take the pen. It would be laughable if it weren't so offensive. Jaime's poor interpersonal skills continued as I explained to her that I was not quite receiving the level of service I anticipated. Her reply? She not so politely told me I was welcome to never return. *GASP* Shame on you, Jamie and don't worry-- neither I nor nary a friend will ever set my precious, soft, delicate skin in this place again. Best in class service was not provided to all customers regardless of age, creed, race, or ability. It's 2016, Jaime; it's time you learn a thing or two about equality. read more

I was looking for a massage since I hadn't had one in a long time. I work in the spa industry but the place I work is always busy so the massage therapist never have time to do one for me. I googled massage places on Capitol Hill and this one came up. I had Jason and he very good. He greeted me on time and took me upstairs to one of the rooms. He was professional and did not say much during my service. I got the 90 mins massage and was glad I did. He is very strong and I was in need of a massage. I will definately go back to see him again.
