My face was breaking out like crazy at the start of the year so I knew I needed a facial ASAP. A quick YELP search led me to TuSuva. I called and booked a reservation for a natural facial the following afternoon. I was happy to get an appointment so quickly; however, I was surprised at their antiquated phone-only reservation system. I arrived at the building a few minutes early on the day of my appointment and ascended one flight of carpeted steps to enter the spa's waiting room. The room had a great aroma with spa music playing at a low volume. I was greeted by a staff member who checked me in and offered me some strawberry water. I could see the staff feverishly moving in an out of a supply closet to grab towels and hear the conversations of other clients as I sat in the tiny waiting area. I was escorted into the facial room after a short wait time. My esthetician applied each product with care and only explained each product she was applying to my face after I asked her questions. The extractions were more painful than I've experienced during other facials. Also, the facial steamer was incredibly hot at one point and I had to ask my esthetician to turn it down. I could hear the conversations in the waiting area during my facial so it wasn't the most relaxing experience. I left the spa with soft, glowing skin and a reduction in breakouts which was great. Can I please give 10 stars?!?! My massage with Derrick was so so so AMAZING! Let's start with his philosophy of wanting to help heal the body rather than just rub oil on it. Backing up a bit, 2 days ago I was limping due to severe right hip pain. My tennis coach recommended I visit TuSuva to get myself straighten out. I am so glad I listened. The entire experience was lovely from start to finish. Parking was amazingly easy. I found a metered spot directly in front! Signage perfect, easy to find the spot. The woman at the front desk was so happy and helpful. The spas was clean and inviting. I waited no time to get started. The bed was nice and warm, music perfect. And THEN came there massage! I considered gatekeeping and telling no one about how awesome Derrick was and how much better I felt during and after. That is thankfully not my style and everyone deserves to have the issues in their tissues worked out. He listened well and did a phenomenal job releasing my tight fascia. Kana was amazing. I had an unbearable soreness on my back. I must've had pulled a muscle and it was almost crippling. Thankfully, they were able to accommodate me on a very short notice. As I entered the parlor I was greeted warmly by what ended up being my masseuse. The place was covid cautious and assured customer safety which was a big plus. The massage room and the ambience were quite inviting and soothing. I immediately felt calm and comfortable. Kana was very attentive as I explained my problem areas: she laid out a plan to address it. She employed what she labelled as "heirloom" techniques that she had inherited from her parents. It was very unique and effective. She was also able to easily discern my problem areas and address them. Thanks to her and the techniques I am almost pain free. I do have lingering muscle pain for which I plan to schedule another session this coming week. $2 parking at the parking garage (Colonial?) with validation from FLOW as long as you leave before 6pm. This is important to know as street parking in the Adams Morgan area can be difficult to find. I've only had tourist trap massages in Thailand and China that were dirt cheap, at dirty hole-in-the-wall places, but nothing dirty went on like many people like to think happens. In addition I must have been shown very little affection as a baby because I probably didn't get touched much, and as an adult I'm very ticklish practically all over my body. Anyway about FLOW....there's NO SIGNAGE outside. If you aren't looking for this place you'll never find it. Even if you are inside the building and never heard of FLOW, you wouldn't know they did massages. My first impression was that of apprehensiveness. As I walked into the 3rd floor "studio" I thought I was walking into someone's HOUSE and thought what did I get me and my wife into. It wasn't the spacious, glamorous, studio I thought it would be when you look at various website pictures of massage studios. It essentially looks like a home-operated business. Our masseur and masseuse for our couples massage were very friendly and professional though. They offered us some water, closed the door to give us privacy as we slipped under the sheets on the heated massage tables. Felt nice and comfy. We opted for the signature instead of the deep-tissue massage, but we were asked how firmly we needed the massage and asked if there were areas they wanted us to focus on. I told him I was fine, but as he worked through the massage he found knots and worked them out. While on our back they basically worked from the top of the head to the soles of our feet, flipped over, then worked back up to the shoulders. Not once did the case of the tickles hit me, I thought for sure once he got down to my feet I'd be screaming in laughter. For his safety I probably should have warned him, but everything was done perfectly. Since Reggie was finished for the day after our massage, he even offered his parking space to us, since we planned to stay and have dinner in the area. I've gotten facials and massages myself since then and I always leave happy. Today, SO treated me to a facial just because (spoil me forever please). I saw Tatiana and I left feeling great. We had to modify the facial a bit and she was awesome about it. She made it work with the time (stretched it out a bit since we were eliminating some steps) and kept the same price. She took a good amount of time extracting my face (it was so necessary) and gave me some good advice. In short: the facials at this place are so good that my sister comes from Atlanta just to get one. Generally a very relaxing experience and all the staff is so nice and receptive. What makes them stand out to me is their vast knowledge of different skin types. After a few stressful weeks I needed an emergency massage as my shoulders felt like bricks. I asked a friend who she went to and she recommended Derrick. I was lucky that he had a same day opening and I'm so glad it worked out. Derrick has a style that is pretty different than most deep tissue massages I've had. It involves what my non-expert self calls a mix of stretching, deep tissue, and trigger point massages. He's so strong but not overly so - great balance of precision and strength. The stretching techniques felt so good he joked that I gained an inch after my massage. I also love his music selections (not your typical new age meditation music). Small small nitpick is that the face pillow is kind of uncomfortable somehow. I couldn't tell if it was too stiff or high or the seam of it was digging into me or something but I felt like I needed to adjust my neck and head every so often to relieve the discomfort. She is very knowledgeable and pays attention to the unique nature of my skin and what it may be going through at any particular moment. I chose TuSuva for my first facial experience after reading all of the great reviews on yelp. Compared to other places, like red door, they offered a slightly longer facial for less. I can't remember the name of my esthetician but she was great and talked me through the whole facial experience and what she was doing for my skin since it was my first time. The massage portion of the facial was just a brief shoulder massage but it was a nice addition. You can also choose to do an all option with natural products which I loved. Maybe it's b/c we've been spoiled by massage places at resorts and even at Turf Valley, but my wife and I thought that Flow was just ok. Let me explain. It was the wife's final Saturday before going back to work and after all the stress from managing various family functions through the holidays, she had a nagging headache, likely the result of referral pain in her shoulders. I diagnosed that her shoulders were in fact tight, and attempted a massage, but for the life of me, I can't give a good massage or back rub -- well, save for ribs and other meats, which I can rub and massage with the best of them. But I digress. Since the wife was accompanying me to the Brunch Bunch meeting, I figured it'd be nice for her to have a massage in DC, so I looked up 'massage' and DC. Flow was the 2nd result after Joy's Spa, which is located in the same building. Remembering their name advertised for the Election Night Soiree and seeing a 4 and 5 star review from Kathleen and Stef, respectively, was all the convincing that I needed. I called around 10:30 and left a message, hoping that they'd be able to take us. They called me back shortly after opening (11am) and I was able to secure an appointment at 3:40pm. I'm pretty sure I spoke with Yana on the phone and she was really sweet and even informed me of the $2 validation for 2 hours of parking at the Colonial garage. So I went into Joy's and asked if they could let me into Flow, or if she knew how I was supposed to handle payment. This whole exchange was likely marred by my general ignorance in terms of how Flow and Joy's Spa work, or do not work, together, and I ended up rather confused and waiting in the "lobby" area, a.k.a., the doorway to Asylum. As far as the actual massage, my wife thought it was ok. Charles did focus quite a bit on her shoulders, which she appreciated. The price was definitely right ($75 for an hour), and I'm grateful that they were able to take us on such short notice. Still, the entire experience gave the vibe of getting a massage at someone's home and my wife's the type that enjoys a relaxing environment, you know, candles, a bath robe...all that stuff you can find in Romancing Your Wife for Dummies 3rd Edition. The massage did achieve it's intended effect of relieving the tension in her shoulders, but it certainly wasn't the relaxing experience one would associate with getting a massage. So if you're in need of a massage in a pinch (somehow, that sounds like a bad pun), Flow will definitely get the job done. But if you're looking to spoil your SO, you may want to look elsewhere. I was a bit anxious/nervous about what to expect.. did i need a robe? what should i wear? 60 minutes is a lot of rubbing and another 60 mins treating my face?!??! I got past that and just went for it; no makeup, loose fitting clothes to get in and out of quickly. The spa is modern and clean, very professional, and soothing. Helen was my masseuse. She was very nice and friendly. She asked me a few questiosn to help personalize my experience as well as made sure I was comfortable. The pressure of the massage was great, but she did almost make me cry uncle twice. I figured she was working out some knots I didn't know i had. I didn't mind since she wasn't rough about it. I was falling asleep in comfort even as she squeezed pores on my face. I was so relaxed. When she was finished I really wish i had 30 minutes to get in a nap, but I felt loose, refreshed and carefree.. seriously...loose baggy clothes, no makeup and I didn't care. I FELT great! Cool, this means the foot traffic is reduced, and your experience can be even more peaceful. When you first enter the sitting/ main area, you are already at ease - welcomed with a beverage and a smile as you are asked to sit comfortably and await your service. The ambiance was soothing, peaceful and professional. The decor was pastel-hued relaxation with a modern, clean yet not antiseptic feel. I had high hopes from Yelp reviews, and the hopes continued as the time passed. The aesthetician was careful, gentle (as gentle as can be for a facial with extractions), focused and rhythmic. All in all, the consultation from the beginning to the start to the middle to the end and the check out, the experience was perfect. Despite paying full price, I still felt like it was a bargain. During the experience, I was not prodded or poked, everything was quick but efficient, towels and products were soothing at the right time. Massages incorporated appropriately. Conversation at a minimum and focused on improving the experience. I was regularly aware of what was happening and up next due to the constant communication of the process - though most of the time, it was silent relaxation time. Prior to a weekend trip in D.C., I researched prices and reviews of day spas in the area like a mad woman. I desperately needed a facial as my face was tripping out on me. It was time to call on higher powers and show this acne who was boss. TuSuva was the only place with good reviews where prices for a 60 minute facial seemed reasonable (relatively speaking... NYC is so much cheaper!). I came to TuSuva with my cousin early on a Sunday morning. She opted to get a massage. I of course got the facial. My facial was very pleasant and cleansing. The extractions hurt like a mother but I knew that was coming. At the end, she gave me tips and suggestions to keep my face clear. Very sweet girl and also very professional. She also gave a great head and neck massage too. By the next weekend, my face had cleared up dramatically. Hallelujah! I liked my experience but the only aspect of it that bothered me was that you could hear people if they talked too loudly in the lobby. I think I also heard a vacuum cleaner at one point. TuSuva located in what feels like a cozy apartment, was such a pleasant and welcoming experience. When I entered the cozy place, I was immediately greeted by the receptionist (who may be the owner.) He took my temperature and ensured I filled out a COVID questionnaire. After that, the massage therapist took me into a room and started working. I scheduled a 60 minute deep tissue massage with medium pressure. He was gentle and had really soft hands - no complaints. I had many knots in my quads that he rolled out and it was well worth the pain. The masseuse used lotion and hot stones to massage by back, legs, and feet. (What a bonus! I didn't know that was included in my deep tissue.) Afterwards, I put my robe, tube-top dress, slippers and went inside the Esthetician's room. I highly recommend a microdermabrasion by Ina. She was so friendly, and made me feel comfortable right away. She asked me what my facial routine was. For me, its pretty basic -- Wash my face with Cetaphil sensitive skin bar soap. Apply Lemon Toner by Clean & Clear and top off with Bioderma Sebium Hydra moisturizer (2x a day). Ina noticed that I had a mild case of rosacea on my cheeks and recommended that I look into IPL and try a different moisturizer to see if I noticed any difference in my skin. Overall, the whole process was soothing and pain-free! Ina cleaned my face and exfoliated my dead skin cells. Next, she applied a coconut hydration gel and other cooling masks. She removed my black heads (called extractions) and applied a lip hydration serum :) Then she put me under the LED light for a couple minutes. This place is amazing! It's clean and staff is very friendly. I had Microdermabrasion with Glycol acid treatment with Ina. And..... wow!!!!! It's been three days post treatment and my skin still feels and looks good. I highly recommend Ina and this place overall. She also gave me lots of samples of skincare products.
