AMAZING! My mom and I were hungry for a little something before we went and painted pottery at Sunfire Ceramics and we happened to come by the Lawrence Farmers Market. It was filled with all sorts of treats, flowers, crafts, and so much more! We ended up getting a scone and muffin from a small bakery (I can't remember the name of it) and it was delicious! The Lawrence Farmers Market is huge and awesome. It was kind of a destination for me! We came from Manhattan and spent Friday night at a hotel. Though the market opens very early at 7 AM, we had some Free State beer the night before and slept in a bit. We got to the market after 9 and it was hoppin'! It is a very sizable market that had a maze to walk through to see everything. I started off the day with a peach-jalapeno popsicle for breakfast. Then Eric R. and I tried a coconut macaroon. We ended up also sharing a chicken tamale (not all at once but we nibbled whenever we found an interesting vendor). We almost dined at the Purple Carrot truck which had a lot of yummy menu items with beets and avocado, but we were filling up fast. HyVee had a mini buffet of items the chefs made with purchases from the market: fingerling potatoes, red long beans, and a goat cheese frittata. We tried to buy the red long beans but someone snatched them from under us so I had to buy them at The Merc once we left (but it was cheaper at The Merc!) I especially looked forward to Bimi Bakery's booth where we got matcha cookies, sesame coconut adzuki mini cupcakes and a red bean chestnut steamed bun. We sampled the sake cake but a lady came up and took the last one while we were there. We also had iced green tea and hot hojicha tea. I also picked up a shiso plant from here. I am very impressed with this market and would definitely return! read more

I came to The Lawrence Farmer's Market via the recommendation of former Lawrencian, Betsy K and let me tell you, Betsy K don't lie! This is everything a farmer's market should be. The star of the show is the glorious fresh produce sold by the farmers themselves, helpful and friendly folk who will tell you all you want to know about their offerings. In addition to that, you have the unexpected: the baked goods (I had a slice of the best jalapeno cornbread ever), the goat's milk soaps and shaving creams, the Ostrich eggs (which scare the bejesus out of me), the cooking demonstrations, the live music, the hand made knits, the jewelry/crafts and more. I would give this five stars, really I would, but for the fact that I can never get my act together on a Saturday morning to be up and at 'em in time to get the strawberries in June (you need to be there by 7am sharp, because they sell out immediately). OK, I'm gonna come even cleaner that that: I can't even get my act together to get there by the time they pack up for the day (11am). Every damn week I vow, "this will be the one! I'm setting my alarm, and I'm gonna beat the earliest of the early birds!" And it never, ever happens. Hence, we've only made it early one time, and two or three times we were able to catch the tail end of it (that is, we were able to grab the leftovers as the farmers were packing up their stands to go home). Been coming since the 80s. It's one of the coolest things about living in Lawrence that most of the town doesn't have a clue about. I'm just fine with that. Saturday morning is a ritual for me. Get my first cup of joe from the nice Peruvian lady on the east side of the market followed up by a pork tamale with hot sauce from the guy that co-owns La Parilla, Zen Zero and Genovese. I really think he comes here to experience being a street vendor and he has *great* stories about his grandmother in the mountains somewhere in Central America. A chicken and some eggs from Sweetlove Farms please, and all those terrific green vegetables, goat meat, lamb, flowers, homemade granola and other goodies, and on and on. Don't pass up a Clark family homemade pie. Pricey? Yes. The real deal? Absolutely. Can your momma make one that good? I bet against it. This market is about more than just shopping for locally sourced food. Whatever you do, whatever you DO, stop and spend some time chatting with the vendors. You'll make new friends along the way. The late spring leeks are just coming on and they're to die for. Julia Child leek and potato soup for lunch this Saturday at noon, my house, every weekend as long as they're available. But be warned: some prices can be pretty high. If you want cheap, poor tasting, chemically sprayed stuff from a greenhouse there's Dillon's, HyVee or Checkers. I'm writing this as a review of the LFM's holiday mart they had at the Holidome and so this may not be the appropriate place so if the YELP gawds decide to zap this review, so be it. ;o)_ Ok, we LOVED the holiday mart and we spent a lot of money. They had everything from fresh, home grown vegetables (yes, even in December there are Kansans growing produce in high tunnels), soaps, prepared foods, baked goods, pictures, crafts, artwork, you name it. This just encourages me to try to make a visit to the regular market next year. But, if you're close to Lawrence or like to make the drive, you've got to experience the holiday mart. read more

Of all the farmer's markets I've been to in the KC metro, this market always comes across as the liveliest and "organic", i.e. local. It's never slammed with people, you don't have to know someone to find parking within 5 minutes, and they always have a nice variety of offerings. Want veggies and fruits? Got it. Want baked goods and cooked food? Got it. Soaps and lotions? Find it here. Drink offerings, alcoholic and non? Yup, that's here. It's also just not one of something, which is nice for the customer to compare. I try to venture up (or down?) here once a month, and $20 always goes a long way, and that includes food to eat there. My only gripe is that it's not closer to KC, but then it would probably lose its vibe / feel, so it's for the best. read more

We are regulars here, and my only complaint is that it's sometimes tough to get there early enough to get dibs on all the goodies. I absolutely love the Lawrence Farmers Market. Supporting incredibly hardworking people who charge fair/inexpensive prices and tell you exactly how they grow their crops/bake their pastries/raise their animals/make their art? YES please! Lawrence has an impressively extensive market with fantastic variety. Go early (the Saturday market opens at 7 and the opening bell is the time to get the best selection, though they are open until 11) and often (you can also go Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-6). The well-kept website offers a weekly newsletter that comes to your inbox every Thursday or Friday to keep you apprised of all the products that will be available at that week's market. PLUS, the market often has musicians, singers, free samples, and guest chefs! Also, once a year in early/mid-December, the Market reopens indoors and offers a vast selection of their best products along with some extras for holiday shopping. Stock up then! I. Am. In. LOVE. My first excursion to the farmer's market was this weekend. Which, wut. I've been living in Lawrence for almost three years now and this is the first time I've ever been to the market? That's just sad. It's like a vegetarian's paradise there! We wandered around for about an hour, taking in all the vendors' offerings on our first trip 'round the market and then actually buying what we wanted on our second loop. I really wish I'd written down the names of the farms we bought our goods from, because all of them were stellar, priced reasonably, and produced delicious food. I ended up making probably the best salad we've ever had from a bag of micro greens, a couple of tomatoes that were to DIE for*, some homegrown mushrooms, and a delicious little cucumber that was so crisp and juicy it made me want to cry. We also decided to grab a block of fresh honeycomb from some local bee farmers, and holy Hannah is it good! I've been breaking off small chunks to suck on all week. Fresh, local honey really is where it's at--no more little plastic honeybears in MY house! If I didn't have a black thumb, I would have totally been excited about all of the floral offerings I saw on display. Beautiful blooms as far as the eye could see. I didn't dare walk too close to any of the flowers, though, lest they just decide to give up on life and wither in my presence as every houseplant I've ever gotten has done. If only one of the growers would just come to my house and be my personal gardener... One of the neat things about the market is that it's not cash-only, as many of them seem to be. You can use your plastic to purchase market tokens, which you can then use like cash at any of the vendors. Genius idea, since a lot of people (self-included) rarely carry cash. My only regret is not stopping by Hurtz Donut for a Cap'n Crunch donut (yes, I'm serious), but I hear they show up every week. I won't be skipping their booth again! While I fully intend to join a CSA for produce this year after we move, I'm definitely planning to visit the market as often as possible for whatever we don't get from our weekly allotment. I can't wait to go back each week and see what else is available as more fresh fruits and veggies come into season! *Confession: Only one of those tomatoes went into the salad. I ate the smaller one like an apple, with just the teeeeniest sprinkle of salt on each bite. SO GOOD. read more

Happiness. The LFM is fairly big and has just about anything and everything you could want from a farmer's market. Breakfast? Yes. Pastries and baked goods? Yes. Honey? Yes. Pretty floral arrangements? Yes. Chicken, duck, beef, pork, elk, emu meet? Yes. Wool? Yes. Lavender? Yes. Plants for sale? Yes. Handmade soaps? Yes. PRODUCE & HERBS? YES! Even if you don't buy anything, it's beautiful to visit, and sometimes there are special themes. But, it will probably be hard to go home without something that catches your eye. The smaller markets on non-Saturdays are also a pleasure, just smaller with less variety, of course. Go, grab something to eat, and plan your meals for the week. read more

Usually a fun outing, but not comprehensive enough or with enough vendors to make it a substitute for the supermarket or a proper food cart. So, good but not compelling. The okra guy does great lemonade and the flower ladies are a hoot, but I can find the same or better local honey in area stores and the produce isn't that that exciting. As far as I can tell, there is no must-have product which compels one's attendance. For example, there's no awesome fresh bread in the whole set-up (sorry Amish ladies). They'd need more bathrooms and more picnic tables to really make this a destination. read more

This is what a Farmer's Market should be...you can get delicious local ingredients ranging from freshly picked produce, to locally made cheese, farm eggs, locally raised and butcher meats, and fresh baked goods, not to mention other delicious foods, beautiful plants and flowers, and food to eat on the spot (I've been told the tamales are great). The local musicians that are present at the Saturday event lend a lively atmosphere, and this is a great place to go out, support your local agricultural economy, and see some great Lawrencians. I highly recommend the butter horns from Flory foods (Mrs. Flory has been baking these same delicious rolls since I have been attending the market and they are delicious), as well as the goat cheese that is aged in local caves (the Swiss is to die for), and the...oh, who am I kidding, this is fresh off the farm goodness, I doubt that you could get anything bad here. read more

This is a great farmer's market for this town. You're not going to be able to get a week's worth of produce and will probably still have to hit up the Merc or Hyvee but you can get a lot. You can also get you're whole chickens and eggs for the week or order some pastured pork. I'd rather get my meat here where I've met the farmer and talked with him or her than from the store even if it is labled ethically. I love picking up some fresh cut flowers for my table and some kind of treat like a scone or brownie too. read more

We're so blessed to live here in Lawrence and have the opportunity to frequent the Saturday morning market (the weekday evening option is much smaller and far less exciting). Grumpy 40-something alert...Color me disappointed in the 2015 version of the Lawrence Farmers' Market. It's crowded, not the variety that I expected (although I will write some of that off to it not being full veggie season yet), and more interested in charging organic prices for what we just used to call homegrown. Hard to believe that Topeka seems to have a leg up on Lawrence this time--better parking, better prices, more variety, and more space to move around. I wish Topeka could get the same SNAP benefit program that Lawrence has, because a lot of the people who could really use that fresh produce actually live near the market in Topeka. read more
