I came here with 5 friends on our annual trip to Michigan and we went further than usual to try this place. Nice vibe and some decent wines tasted, but the experience was overridden by the terrible service we got. We were the first group there when they opened and the girl behind the counter almost seemed annoyed by us being there. We asked for advice on their wine and her response was "it's personal preference." We tasted and left quick in disappointment but we could have had such a nice time if service was better. We would have stayed longer and bought wine but were so floored by the terrible service we got. So bummed and hoping it was just an off day for her (or maybe her first day and she just needs training on customer service and people skills). read more

I've probably drove past this place 100 times, and today I finally stopped in. My official recommendation is to have everyone STOP JUST DRIVING BY. They've got new owners as of last winter and have put some $ into the tasting room. The wine is good and it's all from southwest Michigan. An unassuming little place with really great wine. If you usually go down the road at St. Julian's--please think about coming here instead. We loved the dry reds and the whole tasting experience is so much better when there are just a few people in the room and the winemaker is right in front of you. The one detractor of our visit was a strong sulfur smell (part of the winemaking process) but we still walked away with two bottles. Do not skip this stop on the wine trail! read more

Did a private wine tasting event yesterday and it was off to a rough start. The regular tasting counter was packed and the women took a while to get to us. Finally another woman came over to us but didn't really tell us that she was going to prepare our cheese plate. So it was another good 20 min before she came back. But after we got all that and they started the tasting, we loved Judy!! She was so friendly and even tried a few wines with us! She explained the grape process and the fermenting of different wines. I came in with a party of 10 and they speedily accommodated the entire family! We came to buy some bottles as gifts for other family members who stayed home and to enjoy each other's company! They brilliantly have a food truck come to serve food while you taste wine, and tonight was the spicy and delicious Curry In A Hurry truck! I would suggest the Just Peachy wine to go with the chicken! The Just Peachy also comes in a can which is a neat new way to be served. And for me I instantly fell in love with the Cherry Red wine! Sweet, very fruit forward with enough legs to satisfy my inner sommelier. 2015 Two Handed Red was a favorite for the rest of my family and they consumed multiple bottles. I really appreciated the points system they have with a hole punch card method that allowed us to get a bottle of wine for free after a couple of hours of drinking wine and buying some to go! I respect the ownership and am excited to go again later this week! Clean establishment, there is something cozy in the atmosphere about the barrels as decor. Perfect for a date if you get there early and want to sit at the bar to do wine tasting. I will say the menu was VERY confusing. We have been to Lawton Ridge a couple of times and really enjoy their wine. Although the wine is relatively inexpensive, the flavors are awesome. We have traditionally been white wine people, but Lawton Ridge offers some "easy" reds that I can say that we really enjoyed. I think that this is a hidden little gem kind of out of the way and unassuming. The staff could be a little bit more on top of their customer service skill set, because it seems that they are either not as knowledgeable as they could be or perhaps they are just too busy when the spikes in traffic come through the door. Overall, it is a cool little place to go and taste a little, buy a bottle and either drink it there or take it home. I definitely think that they have a good product at a fair price and look forward to visiting again soon. read more

I wish this local treasure were on my side of town. If it was in my neck of the woods, I'd pop in all the time. Few local businesses do as much as Lawton Ridge to keep things interesting for their patrons and to partner with cool local businesses. They bring in food pairing partners weekly on Wednesdays, and offer a wide range of pairings from crepes to pizza, quiches to tacos. My husband and I had a brilliant time at their Valentine's Day wine and chocolate pairing, and I also loved the eclipse party they held last summer. The sparkling wine and the merlot are our favorites, and we love the warm welcome we always receive from the stellar staff. Definitely a local gem. read more

A friend gave me a gc for up to 8 people. There were two fabulous ladies working and they were both so knowledgeable and nice. We made reservations on a Sunday at noon, right when they opened. Always a favorite place of mine for wine tasting. But last night was especially awesome. I attended their 3 course wine dinner (from Feed the World Cafe) paired with Lawton Ridge wine. The food and the wine were very thoughtfully prepared. The 1st course was Fruity Curry Chicken Salad Tartine on grilled sourdough, paired with Unoaked Chardonnay. The 2nd course was Savory Herb Roast Duck with Golden Beet Puree and Balsamic Berry reduction paired with Two-Handed Red. And the 3rd course was French Vanilla Cheesecake with Warm Berry Jam Sauce paired with Traminette. Everything was delicious. The chef spoke about each course and the vintners described why they chose each wine. The evening started at 6:30pm and concluded shortly after 8:00pm. Perfect! It was a wonderful evening and I definitely would do it again. Lawton Ridge does host a lot of events - pizza night, crepe night, quiche night, and food pairings like I attended. I Absolutely love this winery! We have lived in Mattwan for over 22 years and driven past Lawton Ridge so many times I can't even count and I'm so HAPPY I finally did!!!! What a charming little winery! Very welcoming and the wine was fabulous! We stopped in when Top Self Catering was serving up Souping it up! (Which was also fabulous) Wonderful pairing with the wine. Wonderful winery! Very helpful staff and excellent wine. My mom told me this was her favorite winery so I had to stop in on the way back from Chicago. You get 6 samples for $5 but the lady had me try more than 6. All the wine was great from the dry whites to the sweet reds. Ended up buying a whole case which they give a 10% discount on. read more

Test driving cars with the Mrs. a week or so ago and since we were sans kids decided to hit this place on our way home to quench our thirst. The owner/vintner was very friendly and full of information on the wines and the area. We each did a tasting and based on his recommendation went to another local winery after we left. We purchased two bottles thought I can't recall off the top of my head which ones. I can tell you though we've already finished both bottles and will be returning soon to get more. A great venue with friendly, informative staff. When you visit, ask to see "the back," and you'll get a tour of their production facility. In addition to delicious wines, you can also purchase glassware, chocolate, honey, maple syrup, and lots of other locally sourced items offered in their shop. When I discovered Lawon Ridge, thru the brother of one of owners, I was truly surprised that excellent wine is made in Michigan. Then probably equally people are amazed it is being sipped in Alabama. The Lawton Ridge 3, 2011, was blind tasted with a $139.00 bottle of wine and was chosen as the best. Very smooth and drinkable, and reasonably priced. I would recommend it highly. My wife and I love this place. Wines are great and the servers are friendly. We especially will Wednesday food truck nights but just dropping by for a glass of wine is a good time. My favorite is Traminet my wife enjoys AZO Red. We both enjoy Just Peachy for dessert. Tasting fee is $5 for 6 samples. Size of sample is around 1 ounce. None of the wines are bad. They just didn't stand out on the date of visit. Tasting room staff were not very helpful or knowledgeable. It was more of a figure it out as you go approach. Labeling for estate bottling was confusing. Some had it others did not but all are on site except bubbly and cherry. The tasting room had enough space for about 12 people. They offer crackers and some nice wine accessories. Two Handed Red won over my son-in-law who claims to hate wine - but he asked for it a 2nd time over Christmas. They have added an outside area with tables - perfect for snacking after a tasting or for sharing a bottle of wine (we packed a small cooler with cheese, crackers and sliced meats). There is now a small charge for tasting, and I have always found the staff patient and informative as the groups I've gone in with had lots of questions as we are learning about the various area wines.
