You would think the city and LAX would make cleanliness a much bigger priority, especially at an international airport that is one of the first and last impressions visitors have of Los Angeles. It was horrible to see the pickup area at Tom Bradley looking this neglected and dirty. For a major international airport in a city that welcomes tourists, there really is no excuse for it to be this bad. Someone needs to be regularly cleaning and maintaining this area.

This is a matter of fact update and is based on sole experience of my recent visit. Hmmm, where to I begin? OK, my story will begin at my experience of checking into a departing flight out of LAX, Terminal 4, the terminal for American Airlines. Preface also by saying the terminal is under massive renovation and has been for some time and when will they complete it? Who knows? OK- Now Pay clear attention- I get dropped off on LEVEL 2 which is the departing level for all flights. My boarding pass is on my phone so I need not stop at the check in counters. I tried, TRIED to be smart and follow the signs as I weave my way through the terminal to get to the departing gates This starts my journey! 1- Signs take me from LEVEL 2 to LEVEL 4 where the TSA check in sites are albeit Pre Check, Regular, Clear and the like. Keep in mind this is just through the security where they check your identification 2- Once past the TSA check in lines you then take the escalators or elevators back DOWN to LEVEL 3 where you then go through the screen machines. 3- once past the screening machines you take the escalator or elevators BACK DOWN to LEVEL 1 (Level 1 is street leve, the place where you normally pick up your luggage on arrival then go out to curbside) NOW I AM CONFUSED. I'M TRYING TO DEPART AND I'M AT THE ARRIVAL STATION???? I look around for signs and there is none. I so I decide to be like a LEMMING and follow the other walkers.... You walk through the tunnels going back in towards the gates and there is counter foot traffic with the arriving passengers. What a mess! Once you get to the end of the tunnel, you will take the escalator or elevator UP to LEVEL 2, the walk to the next bank of escalator and take it UP to LEVEL 3... WAIT Not done yet!!! Then take the escalator UP to LEVEL 4 where the gates are! Did you follow all of this? Do you need a map? Footnote-it was 3643 steps (Yup, counted) ok my watch counted the number of steps it took from the point of getting dropped off at curbside then situated at my departing gate... Walked to wahoo's fish tacos for a restaurant that had breakfast offerings past screening. Only other option that I am aware of is Starbucks which always has a crazy long wait and line. Waiting for our group to be called for boarding the public address system is hard to hear and words were difficult to understand. It is what it is. LAX is never my first choice of airports but is often the only airport that offers non stop flights to locations that i want to visit. I'll continue to fly through LAX.

I used to arrive at LAX (Los Angeles International Airport), but in stopped because Hawaiian Airlines got moved over to Tom Bradley Airport (International Flights) instead of being at Terminal 5. I strongly disliked dragging my luggage from Tom Bradley Airport to Terminal 5 where the rental car shuttles were. I tried Long Beach Airport, but they close early and so do the Rental Car Companies... then I get stuck without a rental car if my flight is delayed. I switched to Ontario International Airport, but this time, I needed a red eye flight which LAX had because of the merger with Alaska Airlines. It's complex, but there are some benefits (such as more flight chouces) to switching back to LAX. I'm super happy that we landed at Terminal 6. Why? 1. The rental car shuttles stop here! 2. There are several restrooms between the gate and Baggage Claim 3. Directional signs are clear and numerous 4. The environment is modern, bright, spacious, and clean. Perhaps I will return to Terminal 6 in the near future!

When I know I'm flying out of this terminal, I don't think about getting to the airport early. Whereas if it was another terminal I absolutely would. Staff generally are annoyed but not as bad as JFK. They ain't winning awards for customer service but they do explain things pretty well. This time around I flew out of gate 52D. If you're in any of the 52 gates other than A or B, know that you need to get to the 52 gate and then you'll have to chat with a gate agent, scan your boarding pass, then take another bus to your gate. Thats how big LAX is. You need to jump on another 5 minute shuttle ride to get to your gate. The 52 gates aren't world class. It's pretty old. Probably just neglected since most of the flights here are regional / short distance flights. There's flights to Seattle, Bay Area, etc from here. Overall verdict - you could certainly do worse. But for how big it is, I think it's a pretty well oiled machine. And that in of itself earns a 3 star from me.

TERMINALLY BUSY…read more Thanks to Southwest and Jetblue, Terminal 1 at LAX is bustling. Expect a bottleneck outside this popular terminal due to so many drop-offs and pick-ups. If you take a shuttle, they have an exclusive lane that lets them navigate faster. TSA usually moves fast, but sometimes the lines are long. Mid-day, I waited less than 5 minutes. Pre-dawn, can be busy. Food options include Urth Caffe & Bar, Einstein Bros. Bagels, Chick-fil-A, and Rock & Brews. Restrooms tend to be clean, and there are water refill stations near them. Gates are often overflowing with people, so I'll find a quiet spot with a view as soon as I've reached the concourse. It's usually peaceful until someone inconsiderate puts their phone on speaker. Dude, NO ONE wants to listen to your nonsense. NO ONE. If only Southwest had a club lounge!

Meanwhile they shortened the runway to limit jet flights! By the way, this is where Harrison Ford crash landed onto Golf Course instead of a runway! This general aviation airport, naturally long favorite of celebrities & biz heads, had its share of public scrutiny just like many other non commercial airports in California. Like my San Carlos Airport SQL or Palo Alto Airport PAO. Historic significance lays in the fact that famous DC-3 & military aircraft was produced by Douglas Aircraft Co in Santa Monica at the airport before it had moved to Long Beach. Famous tenants like Harrison Ford, Tom Cruise & Arnold Schwarzenegger, along with others, average daily 250 takeoffs & landings, that's a lot of noise! Neighbors in Santa Monica didn't want harmful exhaust, emissions, fueling, lead & carbon, pollution, and noise! At the same time, its use during WWII for military purposes had federal agreements for FAA to allow operations. So various aviation interests contended with the City of Santa Monica over its ownership. They reached the agreement after endless litigation to return the control of the airport land to the city. Met with Oliver and Jorge and they gave me all of the information I needed to begin my journey into aviation. Prices are very reasonable and the school is going through lots of positive changes. I was also impressed with how many of the staff members are bilingual. 非常好 Great fleet of airplanes to learn from: Cirrus, Cessna, and SportCruisers.
