No stars. Ripoff artists and you will see the multitude of reasons why. 1) Approximately 2 months ago my small dog was in for routine shots. 2) Ripoff specialist Dr. Edelman said she really needed her teeth cleaned. That's it. He clearly noticed this needed to be done. He didn't say anything about extractions. 3) The estimate for the cleaning was $547.00. 4) I wanted to make sure I would get this done when I had about $600 to $700 to cover it comfortably. 5) Got a decent commission check on 3-13 and called to set the appointment for 3-18, the same estimate was confirmed. No mention of the fact there could be more work needed. None. (Not that I wouldn't have agreed to it because my dog is awesome and I knew clean teeth with small dogs is very important) 6) Get there in am and here come the forms. The questions aren't "if we think we need to do something else that will cost more money should we call you first". Nope, it's typical CYA garbage language. I knew what I signed to be clear, but in no way knew what this could entail, no examples like "common items that may show up could be extractions which could run an additional $400". Or "certain levels of loose teeth could cost $350 to $400 to be extracted". Or "we charge for medical waste for the cleaning and the extractions which could add costs". No examples, nothing, just their BS sentences, and they said absolutely nothing verbally about what extra items could cost. 7) Common courtesy, even If the extra work was on their BS form, if you KNOW the bill will be $1,215 dollars as opposed to $547, what would you do? I would call. Regardless of the paperwork, common courtesy, the bill was $1212.50. The extractions were $284.00. I don't know what "major surgery BS charge below is tied to the extractions, they explained nothing. I asked. I asked why the bill was $1212.50 and the extractions were $284. Simple math tells me $1212.50. - $284 is $928.50. So, why would the bill be $928.50 when the estimate was $547? 9) what made it worse was when the person told me what the bill was she was shocked. "Ooof" or something like that is exactly what she said when she told me the total. She can deny it but it's true. What does this mean? I doubt she knows the Dr. is a ripoff artist but man, something is up. 9) I made it a point to have $840 available on my credit card to be safe. I have other cards but to stay tight money wise I keep them home. I explained this to the POS Dr but no breaks given. I said to charge me $800 now and the rest on the same card first thing in the AM. I had already made a payment on the card today and you can't do 2 payments or I would have done it right there. You would thing a regular client giving this place business for YEARS can be trusted to pay $280 the next day after paying $800. Nope, I had to go home and get my emergency card that I keep handy. I used the emergency card and paid it all. They wouldn't let me take my dog home owing $280.00. Yeah. That's a great business practice for long time clients. 10) they threw in some BS discount of $133 the pre anesthetic profile. They didn't give me the results of the profile either. How the f--- do I know they took it? From what I read, these profiles are to ensure the organs of the dog are in good shape for anesthesia. Shocker the results were good huh? You think I would have gotten a call if they weren't? Why wasn't I given the results? It would have been good to know my dog was healthy enough. In summation, I am obviously done with this scam show. Don't trust this place. It's like taking your car to a garage for an oil change that costs $100 and them telling you there are 7 other things you need for a total of $1000. Clown show! Stay away from Layhill ripoff, scam show, we don't care what we told you as an estimate, no compassion for surprised long time clients, Animal Hospital. There must be better animal hospitals in the area. I am going to call around. It sucks that I have to but when the practice could really care less about the bill being $700 more than what you expected it is time to move on. Then they get upset that you get upset about a bill that is $700 more than they quoted? Wow. Complete scam! Stay away! Stay away! I have the bill to prove everything. read more

Staff was very rude. Veterinarian was confronting and one-sided. Dog services were very expensive.I would never bring my pet there again The veterinarian Edelman has no concept of how rude his customers are treated by one of his staff. He just jumps the conclusion that the customer is wrong and doesn't even question the staff member. He has absolutely no people skills. I had a very good experience with this practice. The doctor was attentive and did a thorough review on my babycakes. The staff was great as well. I was in an emergency situation with my dog running a high fever and could not get in with her regular vet. I'm grateful to the help provided by this practice and was there for a couple of visits. I would definitely return to the practice. And yes, we all wish veterinary care was free but that's just not how it works in the real world. I found the rates charged consistent with other practices. This place charged me 350 for an antibiotic shit that my cat supposedly needed and he'd be fine. Then when I had to take him BACK when he got worse, charged another 350 only to tell me he now had a blockage and they couldn't help him and sent me somewhere else where he died. And when I asked to be taken off their email list,I'm still being sent a happy birthday text for him every year!! Insensitive and incompetent. Very unhappy patient. Minutes before closing on Saturday, November 10, 2018, I rushed in after calling first to get medical advice for my kitty. She was prescribed Capstar 2-25. When I found out the price $57, on a strict budget I specifically asked," Is this an over the counter drug or prescription only " and was told, Capstar is prescription only and only sold at a vet or hospital." I was totally shocked to find out when shopping at Petco for pill pockets to administer drug that not only Capstar IS a over the counter drug but can be purchased for as little as $19.99. I called Dr Adelman and he told me to return unopened and he would refund my money. I explained I already started the treatment. I also told him if I was dishonest I would have just purchased another Capstar and returned it instead but that is not me. I only wanted the difference refunded. Dr Adelman even after I told him it would be a shame to loose a patient over $40 but he seemed to care less. I have never written a review like this. I usually just take my business elsewhere because my time is too valuable and I work too hard for my money. If you don't mind being over charged and disrespected than Layhill Animal Hospital is a business for you and yo I ask again Dr. will you refund the $40 difference for the sake of customer service and to keep a valued patient ? I absolutely love this animal hospital, the Staff and Dr. Adelman! We had to bring in my moms kitty who is 17 years old and has had several health issues. The Staff is so professional, warm, caring and knowledgeable. I'm convinced Dr. Adelman is the has got to be one of the best Veterinarian in the world. I've had cats for over 20 years and lived in NY, FL, GA, VA, MD and Holland. I have no words for how grateful I am of him and the rest of the Staff. I relocated in Maryland and live further from their office. Due to not being able to get my moms cat in around my neighborhood I ended up at Layhill and so happy I did. My moms kitty had to get X-rays, labs and was blocked with fecal matter. We had to leave him there due to the amount of things he needed done. He's already looking better and much more comfortable. Their pricing is also very fair. They really care about their patients. Definitely will be taking my 2 kitties there from now on. Discovered the commute is super easy via the 200. My 11 year old dog was taken to this clinic when we noticed she seemed to be confused, was unsteady on her feet, and she was urinating in the floor. She's been potty trained since she was 8 weeks old and NEVER has accidents in the house. Even though she's 11, up to this point she's always aware, easy going, smart, and responsive. She's moved with me 7 times in her life to 3 different states and 2 different countries and never had any medical or psychological issues. Both my husband and I are physicians (for humans) and we recognize that human versus animal medicine isn't exact, but there are some similarities. In an elderly adult with these symptoms we'd be concerned first and foremost for seizures, and after that other neurological issues. So, my dog is seen by their vet and we clearly state our concern that she's had one or more seizures, the vet takes a quick look at my dog, diagnoses her with anxiety because she was panting, and sends her home with Trazodone. He refuses to consider our diagnosis, doesn't provide any helpful information. The techs did a basic blood pressure test and drew labs, he did a cursory physical exam. Only 1-2 hours later my dog had a (witnessed) seizure at home, was rushed to a 24hr vet ER, started seizing there in front of the ER Vet and required 2 different meds at high does to stop the seizure. The vet said she could have died, and likely would have of she didn't get to the ER so quickly. It's a scary thought because this happened as we were settling down for the night, around 9pm. If this happened when we were sleeping and went unnoticed... Now my dog is on twice daily antiseizure meds for the rest of her life. Not only did the vet completely disregard our concerns but they misdiagnosed her, she could have died, they charged $400 for this evaluation, including $92 for a blood pressure reading. For reference the AAHA (American Animal Health Association) states the average fee for a BP check is about $25. For further reference you can buy a BP machine for animals on Amazon for $75. I will not take any of my pets here again, and I would NOT recommend this clinic to any pet owners. It's ridiculously expensive and for poor quality services. read more

I discovered Layhill Animal Hospital a couple of weeks ago, when my 12 year old Lhasa tore a nail. I couldn't get to our normal vet before closing time...and they wouldn't wait. Mind you, we have 14 special needs rescue dogs and we are at the vet all the time! Anyway, the staff and the doctor were very gentle and very sweet to both of us...my injured baby and my borderline hysterical self! Coco is healing nicely and they have actually called to check on her. Over the weekend, we adopted a special needs pup in San Antonio. We have little information about him, except that he was beaten or run over at 3 months old and lost use of his back legs. We called from Texas and they got us in to see the doctor the day we got home. After examining Cooper (go ahead...roll your eyes now...he has wheels, so he is MINI Cooper), he said there might be help!! Cooper went back this morning for further evaluation. So far, we have had wonderful experiences with Layhill Animal Hospital and we are hoping that this trend continues. read more

When we took her to Layhill Animal Hospital, Dr. Adelman gave her a thorough exam and immediately treated her. In one week, she came back 110%. We also received various phone calls throughout the week from the staff and Dr.Adelman checking up on our dog, Mel. You can tell that they truly cared and have a passion for saving animals. Staff seems nice, but I've lost confidence in the the vet. After close to $2000 the vet is finally prescribing a steroid that may fix my cat within a few days. He could have done that 6 weeks ago and spared my cat suffering and additional weight loss. When I described my cats symptoms to friends that are experienced pet owners, many had disbelief that the vet didn't try antibiotics or steroids much sooner. I am looking for another vet as I no longer have faith in this one. It seems like this office just wants to keep you coming back for expensive services. read more

I've been coming to this vet for over 7 years. I found it to be reasonable in cost ( compared to other vets I visited), the staff is friendly and the vet is very calm and knowledgeable, which I admire. He knows my dogs and is very general with them. When ever I visit before any work is done the Dr. always discusses prices and has never pressured me into services or "extras". I have had emergencies in the past with my dog (allergy related) and the Dr. was very kind and patient with us which helped in our state of panic and took my dog right away. Anytime we have had an issue or concern the Dr. takes us the same day and even answers questions over the phone. I love that he calls back with follow up information as well. As far as the facility goes it is kept clean and allows space for more than just one big dog at a time which is great. I'm glad we decided to use this vet. It's one Dr which makes it feel more homey and not like your pet gets lost in a shuffle and because it's not to big you don't have a lot of commotion going on. I also love that you can get grooming done as well. Having everything in house is not only convenient but also reassuring because I know if something happens the vet is there. read more

I tried to make an appointment to have our elderly cat euthanized after several agonizing months of thinking about it, and after talking with the vet at this facility during an appointment about the possibility of euthanasia being the next step. I called to make an appointment (which took us days to work up to). I was questioned about why we wanted to put our elderly and ailing pet down, (which I understand), but then I was informed that I would still have to speak to a vet before I could make an appointment. I never got a call. I never got an explanation about why I needed to consult the vet. In another lifetime I was a vet tech. Patients who came in with pets to be euthanized (with appointments or walk-ins) were treated with the empathy and understanding that a person who is helping aid their pet in the transition deserves. We've been taking our fur baby (rescue dog) to Dr. Adelman at Layhill Animal Hospital for about 5 years now and really recommend him. When we first adopted our pup, the vet office we took him to was very popular (crowded), had numerous doctors (we got a different one every time we went) and charged insane amounts (I think *every* visit was around $200 - whether routine visit, quick trip for a vaccine, etc.). I was unhappy and looking for someone else. A friend recommend we try Layhill and we've been very happy since. We take our dog 1-2 times a year for vaccines and well visits, and usually have about 1 sickness or injury that requires a couple visits over the course of a month. Dr. Adelman & his staff have been knowledgable, given good advice (on food, weight, and behavior issues), followed up on prior issues, and helped guide us through injury/illness issues -- all at fair rates. I was referred to Layhill Animal Hospital by several friends and acquaintances that had either always brought their pets to that facility, or who had decided that switching to Layhill Animal Hospital would benefit both their pets and themselves. I never really had many complaints about the medical care that was provided to my pets from their previous animal hospital. However, a couple of months ago, I began to notice several small issues that I believed would lead to more serious problems within that practice. This made me weary about staying with that practice. Additionally, I recently moved to the Aspen Hill area in Montgomery County from another nearby county. Layhill Animal Hospital was not only great for me logistically, but more importantly, the facility had awesome reviews regarding both medical care and bedside manners. Before switching my pets' medical care into the hands of people that I had never met, I decided to experience Layhill Animal Hospital first-hand. On June 13, 2018, I made back-to-back appointments for both of my cats (Precious and Spookey) on June 18, 2018. On June 15th, the receptionist personally called me to remind me of the upcoming appointment. It was very nice to actually have a human call me directly instead of the text and e-mail reminders that most physician offices send out. Plus, on the day of the appointment, I was running eight minutes late, so a very caring staff member called me to see if I was okay and still coming to the appointment. Even though I was 10 minutes late to the appointment, I WAS TREATED WITH THE UPMOST RESPECT BY EVERY STAFF MEMBER FOR THE ENTIRE VISIT. Also, the staff members that I encountered (the receptionist, vet tech, and Dr. Robert Adelman) were extremely knowledgeable within their areas of practice. When I initially made the appointments for my cats, I had asked the receptionist if she could try to get all of Precious and Spooky's paperwork from their previous animal hospital. When I arrived at Layhill Animal Hospital, I was so relieved that complete charts of both cats were already on her desk. Now, Dr. Adelman would know what vaccinations were due and what medical treatments had been done in the past. This responsible action done by the receptionist would make the appointment more efficient and smoother. Spooky's appointment was for an annual exam and routine vaccinations. He received his Rabies, Distemper, and Feline Leukemia vaccinations even though he is solely an indoor cat. Dr. Adelman did a great job educating me about the pros and cons of a 1 vs. 3 year Rabies vaccination. He also enlightened me about why indoor cats need distemper and feline leukemia shots. The sources for these horrendous illnesses aren't just found outside. Before, Spooky received his Feline Leukemia vaccination, Dr. Adelman suggested that he due blood work to make sure that Spooky didn't already have the disease. He explained that Spooky could have developed feline leukemia even after he tested negative for the disease as a kitten, which was when I brought him to the veterinarian right after I rescued him at about 12-16 months old. That was his first vet appointment that he had ever received. Precious' appointment was more complex. Since we moved into this rental house in Aspen Hill, Precious has been continuously licking the fur off of certain parts of his body and then gnawing at the skin in that area. He is also continuously scratching. NO FLEAS AND SPOOKY DOESN'T DO THIS. Both Dr. Adelman and the previous animal hospital agreed that he was having an allergic reaction to something in the new house, but what??? So, Dr. Adelman agreed with giving Precious an antibiotic injection, but instead of the steroid injection that Precious had been given in the past, he suggested an oral systemic steroid, Prednisolone and oral Benadryl twice a day to help the itching. I have never succeeded in giving Precious oral medication. He would always manage to spit it out (cannot even mix it in his wet food), and I would end up being scratched and bitten. BUT Dr. Adelman took the extra time to show me how to position a cat's head when administering medicine orally. It has worked perfectly at home by myself! Another TERRIFIC thing about Layhill Animal Hospital is that Dr. Adelman is the owner and ONLY VETERINARIAN in the facility. Therefore, you and your pet get to know him and he knows your pet. Your pet isn't seen by different vets (especially ones you aren't fond of). It infuriated me when Precious would be seen 4/6 times for his skin condition by one particular veterinarian, but then the other two times by another veterinarian who said that they would rather do other treatments. If you don't take my word for how wonderful Layhill Animal Hospital is then you should really try it for your pet's sake!! read more

The ladies at the front desk our nice, I gave them a star because of them. Physical are now every 4 months, as if Oct 2013. My cat has a hyperthyroidism, which she is on Tapazol daily for since 2008. Blood work taken in June 2013, would not refill tapazol subscription without another blood test. I was in form it now will be every 4 months. Also, could not find my dog's records, the receptionist that was there in June was no longer working at Layhill hospital. I was also informed they under charged me for my cat bordering a month later. I disagreed, but paid it anyhow, new to the area, did not know of another vet yet. The place is dirty, the vet is abrupt, and seemed to be in a bad mood, and wanting $$$. I have been in the reception area several times with angry customers. I do not understand the four stars rating. According to previous reviews, there use to be another vet in the same office, but he is no longer there. Ii now have another vet. read more

Called on 10/19/20 to ask how much it will cost for 2 vaccines for my dog, specifically bortadella and influenza. Dr. Adelman was the one who picked up both of my calls to inquire and schedule the appointment. I was told that the "TOTAL" price was $80 something and he needs to do the check up as well since he has never been there before which he said was $59. I went ahead and schedule it for 6PM the same day but called and did it for the next day instead. I even told him that my mom will be taking him instead. My elder mother brought him this morning for a 10 minute exam and over charge our dog for $137. I called right away and the lady who picked up said that the vaccine are actually $43 and 37 respectively. She said that she will double check with the Dr. since I clearly asked the "TOTAL" cost before scheduling it. I should have stick with PETCO who charged me way less than $137 for multiple test and vaccine. WE will NOT be returning back because of the Dr./ Owner being adamant that I did not understand him on the day I spoke to him originally. read more

I got a new puppy on a Wednesday and he was scratching his ears a lot so I called a few vets to see if they could see him. I even called the first vet I had called to set up his first physical. No one would see him until the following week. Then I found Layhill Animal Hospital and called them on Thursday morning and they were able to see him at 5:40 that day. I took my puppy in and he was diagnosed with yeast infections in both ears. Can't imagine how much worse they would have gotten if he couldn't have been seen until the following week. Dr. Adelman did his new puppy exam and a few tests and another vaccine and I immediately called and cancelled the appointment I had with the other vet for the following week. I also had Kip groomed there on Friday.....he looked like a different puppy when I got him back! So glad I found Layhill Animal Hospital! read more

The office is clean, the staff are friendly and kind, and the prices are competitive with other veterinarians in the area. Dr. Adelman is approachable and will listen to all concerns, and provide options to treatment. The practice is small, which means as a patient you receive personal care, unlike some of the larger clinics which often feel focused too much on making a profit. I came to this vet hospital because it was recommended to me by a close friend. Although the friend only had routine stuff done with her doggie, i decided to give the dr a try. I'll have to be honest in stating the dr doesn't have the friendliest bedside manner. He is also very to the point. Our dog had a tumor on his spleen and the doc said he was 100% sure it was malignant. From what i have researched and found, is you cant be 100% sure unless you operate and find out (stats say its 75% chance malignant, 25% chance benign). So I went for a second opinion and had the surgery done elsewhere. The diagnosis was correct, the tumor was malignant and my faithful companion had to be put to sleep. Dr. Adelman at Layhill quoted me $5000 for the surgery which is why i went to Kindness Animal Hospital where they quoted $2500--big difference. read more

I truly feel like our pets receive the best care. I really trust Dr. Adelman. I am also very surprised at how consistently fair the pricing is. I have used vets in Rockville, Gaithersburg, Keningston, and Sandy Spring. I have left some of these places feeling like I was overcharged, or taken advantage of because I care for my pet. I can not say enough about how well we have been treated by Dr. Adelman and all of the staff at Layhill Animal Hospital. When I brought my rescue cats (bonded pair) to the vet for their initial visit, Dr. Adelman gifted them with a scratching post that is still in use today. When my cat had a lump, Dr. Adelman was professional, compassionate, and realistic when going over the course of treatment options and cost. His referrals were spot on and also professional. When the time came to send my girl over the rainbow bridge, Dr. Adelman made a house call. I was even more touched when I received a card from the feline dept at Cornell University -- Dr. Adelman had made a donation in my cat's name to further research into feline cancer. First off, Dr. Adelman probably saved my puppy's eye. Her eye suddenly got very swollen one morning and looked painful. I had saved a brochure that came in the mail a couple of weeks previously from Layhill Animal Hospital (because we don't have a local vet yet). I called the number on the brochure and had an appointment for that same afternoon! I really wanted things to work out here, because he is a good vet (if a little sloppy: eye drops went everywhere). But. If you go there, don't try to talk money. And whatever you do, if you get the mailer DON'T TRY TO USE IT!! I did, and the Dr.'s response was to send his technician out to the receptionist to say, loudly right there in front of me: "Dr. Adelman wants to know what makes her think she should get a discount." Well, could be his mailer that says, "bring brochure with you and receive 10% off next doctor's visit" in big bold capital letters. The receptionist went ahead and gave me the discount (News flash: 10% of $96 is $6.60 at Dr. A's). My next call to the doctor didn't go well, we failed to communicate, he was obviously still angry with me. For the followup I just went in and got my puppy's records from him to take to our previous vet (an hour's drive away. But neater. No eyedrops all over the place). We're still looking for a local vet: one that is pleasant and fair as well as capable. read more

I've been taking my two dogs here for 2 years and had a nice experience (but nothing exceptional), the staff is friendly, the prices reasonable, and scheduling is easy (plus they do boarding). However, my dog recently became quite ill (twice in ~4 months, both requiring long term care) and Dr Adelman had been great. He's very caring, takes the time to explain the issues, and provides great referrals to specialists. The staff has been exceptionally friendly, know my name, and are very sweet to my dog (even when she has her 4th accident inside in one visit). If you care about your animal at all, DO NOT BRING THEM TO THIS DIRTY, AWFUL, INCOMPETENT place. It's so bad here that you would think you are watching a Saturday Night Live skit. You will be overcharged, your animal will be poorly cared for and the vet himself needs to go back to school. Do not go here. YOU WILL REGRET IT. The ladies at the front desk are kind, and that's about the only positive thing I can say about this place. read more

Compassionate quality care and the most reasonable pricing of any vet in the area.

[This is the second time I have tried to post this review - something is wrong with Yelp...] I have taken my dog to Dr Adelman at Layhill twice now, and both times I have been very pleased with how patient and gentle the Doctor and his staff are. The second time was an emergency visit; my dog was having severe flu-like symptoms, and they squeezed my in, and then very carefully looked over my dog, sending us on our way with instructions and meds. I was somewhat surprised by how high the charges are for blood work, but I haven't used vet services for a long time and maybe that is just how much it costs. Dr Adelman certainly seems competent, and very caring. I will be using Layhill for my dog's vet care. read more
