Today we saw Dr. Fitzpatrick for our aging and ailing dog. I had called the clinic this morning to report a side effect from her medicine. We were given a noon appointment and were seen upon arrival. Dr. Fitzpatrick took care of everything during our visit. He and his team made sure our dog was comfortable and well-cared for the whole time and after treatment he kindly answered all of questions. I recently needed new blood work for my 14 year old dog and noticed a more elaborate website that I used to place an appointment for blood work with first available vet. I've been with Dr. Godwin for 30+ years and absolutely love her, but she wasn't available. We had a good experience with the vet we saw and accomplished more extensive blood work. I noticed a new sign that they are now charging the credit card fee of 3%. I was emailed my receipt and noticed my credit card reflected a charge of $20.00 MORE than the receipt. When I called the office, I was told the discrepancy was the credit card fee and they had no control over that. So buyer beware, if you use a credit card it's very possible your receipt and the amount on your card won't match. I was also told to avoid the fee they accept a debit card, personal check or cash. read more

I really like this practice. We took many of our animals to this practice. Dr. Fitzpatrick and Dr. Mckight are amazing! They were very helpful!! They explained what to expect when my dog had cancer and an amputation. We could ask as many questions as needed. Dr. Godwin does not have a very good bedside manner. Due to that, we would check which doctor was there. We stopped going there when my dog had a very bad ear infection. We were told that we had to wait three weeks to be seen. read more

What a disappointment. My beloved dog Bodhi was diagnosed with a mast cell tumor and since his age (13) and other health concerns, surgery and anesthesia is something that I really want to avoid. I am familiar with, and interested in, Stelfonta, a new treatment for mast cell tumors on dogs. Not every vet offers this treatment, including our regular vet, but I found Laytonsville Veterinary Practice on the Stelfonta website as a location that offers it. After confirming that they did, I was able to make an appointment for Bodhi. On Monday, December 23, we were seen by Dr. Giosa. She was wonderful with Bodhi and answered all of the questions we had and assured us that he would be a good candidate for Stelfonta. She told us she would need to special order the Stelfonta and that because of the holidays it might not be until Friday that she would be able to let us know when the medication would arrive and when we could schedule the appointment for the injection. I asked if I came up with other questions between then and the next appointment how to get in touch and was told that email was fine. We were sent home with the medications that are required before, during and after the Stelfonta treatment. The next day (Tuesday) I had come up with more questions that I wanted to ask Dr Giosa so I sent an email thanking her again for the appointment the day before and then my list of questions. The rest of the week went by and I hadn't heard anything back. On December 31st, I emailed asking if the email had been received and I promptly got a response explaining that the hospital had been inundated with emergency appointments but that they would remind Dr. Giosa of my email. I responded that I completely understood and just wanted to make sure that the email had indeed been received. It is now January 13th and I have not heard anything. No response to my email. No update to when/if the Stelfonta will arrive. No update to Bodhi's treatment. No answers to my questions. No phone call, no email, no nothing. 3 weeks since our original appointment. I am truly disappointed because Dr. Giosa seemed wonderful but if this is how they treat their patients then I want nothing to do with them. Bodhi deserves better and quite frankly so do I. read more

Dr. Dicello is pawsome! She is excellent at seeking to find the root cause -- is it physical or behavioral. We were so worried about Finn because he was drinking so much water. He has the best-enriched life & we thought the worst but after tests, it was confirmed behavioral. I'm not sure how many stars to put, so I'll be concise: 1. Boarding facilities, staff and care: second to none. Easy 5 stars. I couldn't be more pleased and impressed. 2. Veterinary care: no idea. I've only used boarding. I'm gonna assume they are like the boarding facility though. 3. Front desk: as others have said: grievously bad. It's a guarantee you won't get through - ever. And if you do they put you on hold I think assuming you'll hang up after 10 minutes. They are rude and unaccommodating and also potentially incompetent as they don't get charges correct and then create complication when (finally) realizing they've made a mistake. I hate to say it but if a faculty is good and professional, the front lines shouldn't reflect impolite incompetence. read more

We have been using this practice for over 10 years and 6 dogs. I have been happy in the past w the care, but recently it has slipped. I understand a lot of changes during covid, but the hold time and reception issues are ridiculous. For one visit I arrived early, called from the parking lot and waited almost an hour. When I called back they had never checked me in and said it was my fault. Today, my daughter took our dog in for routine shots and came home w a $450 bill. I have a westie. About 3 weeks ago, I took him here because he was vomiting and didn't have an interest in eating. After bloodwork, it was revealed his liver enzymes were extremely high. So, I was sent home with medication and had a follow-up to see if the medication was working. During the waiting period, I did extensive research and found it is common in westies to have liver disease from copper accumulation. I mentioned this during the follow-up and was rushed out (without all the medication I needed) of my appointment because (later to find out) the doctor wanted to leave early that day. After my appointment, I sent a message referencing scientific papers about westies and copper accumulation, and that reflected all the signs and symptoms my dog is currently having... and requesting the correct medication. It's been 4 days, I've been calling constantly and have left multiple messages, and Dr. Giosa still has not got back to me regarding the heavy metal medication he actually needs. I even asked the front desk to engage in a different provider, with no results. I'm slowly watching my dog die, and they can not even give me the courtesy of reading and replying to a message. read more

My young rescue dog was so traumatized by our last visit for a suspected UTI, that she pooped and peed all over herself. Vet, new to me and the third vet who has seen her in 8 months suggested a behaviorist. Not even reading our history with a behaviorist in NC for this dog. The dog hid in her safe space at home for 36 hr not eating or relieving herself. But they sure texted me my bill before they returned her to me in parking lot. It seems that this vet practice is more geared to generating income than caring for pets. The "behaviorist"who called me from their office to give me names of behaviorists to call - billed me for the call as soon as we ended the call. Found a more caring, understanding vet who is helping our dog overcome her trauma. read more

When I first went to Laytonsville I fell in love with Dr. Godwin and her staff. They always remembered my dog's name and knew the breed well. Dr. Godwin was blunt but very knowledgeable. The prices were fair and I always felt like the vet techs were kind to my pets and myself. I used to drive at least 45 minutes just to go to Laytonsville Animal hospital. But recently I have been very disappointed in their services. With the new COVID restrictions, my husband waited over an hour outside after checking in with the front desk only to be told that they forgot about him. And this was for an emergency visit. Our cat was seen and an exam was performed and they said the cat was healthy and sent him home. Our cat clearly wasn't okay since he was still lethargic and wasn't eating or drinking. We returned the next day and more tests were completed, and once again they said he was healthy and sent him home. We brought him back again and they then did a scan after we personally requested one and they saw he had an obstruction and needed surgery. He was kept overnight and we were told he was receiving fluids. When we picked him up the next day, he was dropped off outside on the sidewalk and his pee pad in the crate was completely drenched in urine. He was completely wet all over from sitting in the urine. Driving home even with the window open, I had to hold my nose because of the strong smell. I called their front desk and all they could say was that they didn't notice it. They didn't apologize. Nothing. After surgery directions indicated that he was not to get wet for at least 10 days, but we had no choice but to wash him since he smelled very strongly of urine. We also noticed that when we would make appointments that we would automatically be matched up with a new doctor there and not Dr. Godwin or any of the other vets. We will return to have the sutures removed but will be looking elsewhere for a new vet. We also did not appreciate the newer vet pushing for certain vaccinations for our dogs. We understood that they need to express why they feel they are necessary, but we shouldn't feel pressured or guilty for chosing which vaccinations we want for our animals. I also have a fearful dog and due to Covid, I could not go inside with my dog. When my dog was returned, she was covered in poop on her rear end and had obviously pooped from fear, but was not cleaned at all and was sent out to me to put in her car crate and have to wash her at home because it had smeared and smelled horrible. This is a dog that is all white, so I am very surprised that they would have not checked her temperature and noticed this! This was also with the newest vet there. read more

I attempted to follow up for an appointment for my new puppy only met with an online new client registration form with 2 days no replies. What's the point of patient care if you can't even bring the patient in? Writing this review breaks my heart because I have been with Laytonsville Veterinary practice for decades...they were located on Rte 108 when I first went to them. I have seen all of the vets except for the newest vet who just graduated and return to this practice after having been a tech there. All of these other vets are terrific and so are the usual receptionists. The techs are also very good. But they have a new young receptionist who deserves less than one star and for the first time, I had to put my foot down and make a scene. Let me explain. My 2 cats were very old and one of them reached the advanced stages of kidney disease. Dr. Keener (who has been treating them for years) and I decided to try a week of fluid injections for the younger cat (18 years old) but the older cat (20 years old) was doing okay. A week later the older cat had totally changed and was failing. I requested an appointment with Dr. Keener to see if they should be both put down - she and I had talked about it just for the younger cat. The day before I got a call from this new receptionist telling me that Dr. Keener had a family emergency and the receptionist needed to reschedule my appointment for a different time the same day. I explained the situation and said I wanted to be sure the same technician (Kelsey) was present so she can validate the dramatic change in my older cat since Dr. Keener would not be there. The decision was now whether BOTH cats would need to be put down. I arrived the next morning to find out she disregarded my request about having the tech be present. Also she scheduled us with the ONLY vet they had never seen. The decision was to be made and implemented that visit. I made a scene and she was able to have us see Dr. Fitzpatrick...who was absolutely wonderful. I have interacted with all of the receptionists and they have been wonderful. This one was horrid and was not apologetic. Dr. Godwin...you can do much better! I would never come back to your practice with my next pet if this is an example of the type of front desk person I have to deal with. I previously had a cat put down with this same practice so I understood the procedure but this person's attitude is unacceptable. Again, Dr. Fitzpatrick and the tech were wonderful and both cats were together their entire life and entered the next world together. read more

Like other reviews it pains me to write this. I have been a client of LVP for eleven years and drive 45 minutes to get there. Over the last two years my cat has experienced more health problems and we need to go to Dr Godwin quite frequently. The bedside manor and overall service has declined significantly, and not just due to covid. I understand new protocols and safety precautions. The wait times are ridiculous, then when it's time to get your pet you're rushed. The front desk staff is short, rude and hold times are insane- sometimes 20 minutes. I feel like they're overbooked which ultimately is not the level of care I want for my pets. Thinking about looking for a new Vet. Definitely not going back in the future with new pets, starting over just stinks. read more

The medi cal care continues at a high level, but like several other reviewers here and elsewhere, I have experienced a continuing drop in the level of customer service. I am sympathetic with the additional burdens on the staff caused by COVID precautions, that doesn't - or shouldn't- cause being forgotten while waiting in the parking lot. This happened at least three times. The biggest problem, however, is difficulty in getting prescriptions refilled. In January, I was provided with the wrong dosage, and it took several back and forths to get this resolved. The last time I ordered two refills at once, and was notified they were ready. When I went to pick them up, only one was ready. It has been three weeks and still no word about the second prescription. Finally I wrote to Dr. Godwin to ask her to resolve this, but. was not given the courtesy of a reply. read more

We have been taking our dogs here for sometime now. The office is really nice, tho the exam rooms could be a little better as in more room. The officer workers to the tech are really wonderful and care about each pet as if they were their own. The vets are pretty good and will answer your questions and let you finish talking about your family member. The price for treatments to meds are pretty good, I havent found cheaper without going way out of the way. The website is really nice and user friendly. The parking could be wider and lit better. Not only have the doctors been great, but the staff went above and beyond helping me brainstorm crate training ideas and ways to keep my energetic puppy stimulated when he couldn't play after a surgery. This place is a bit out of the way but it's completely worth it. Dr. Godwin is amazing, she goes out of her way to make sure the client's needs are met. One time our bichon had surgery to remove two cysts. A couple of days after the surgery, he licked off a couple stitches and the wound started opening up. I called the hospital on Saturday and Dr. Godwin offered that I bring my dog in on Sunday at 10:30 so she could restitch the wound to prevent the possibility of an infection. And the place doesn't even open on Sundays other than for boarding. Again, don't be discouraged by the out of the way location, and ask for Dr. Godwin if you can. I am sure you wouldn't regret it. We have been bringing our pets here for about 10 years. We switched from the practice we used prior to that when we were quoted what seemed like a very high price for a routine dental cleaning from them. We had used Laytonsville for boarding, so decided to get an estimate for the dental cleaning. It was hundreds of dollars less! What an easy switch! I took my cat to the Laytonsville Veterinary Practice for boarding and she was also a patient. It's really very simple. She came back sick and tested positive for Bordetella. So on top of the $300 boarding fees I had $500 in tests and medication. Many people have complained about this practice and I should have listened, but they are close to my house and I had hoped that it would have worked. I asked for a refund and received a note back with no mention of the refund. I guess its implied... No Stay away from this practice. read more

We have 3 feline "children" in our home including a 24 year old female, and 2 males who have received expert care from Laytonsville Vet. We trust them totally in giving our pets the individual attention they deserve. Our male was recently diagnosed with diabetes and they were wonderful in walking us through the steps of doing our glucose testing at home and Laurie (God Bless her) even gave us her home number to call her on weekends. We did call in those first two or three frightening weeks and appreciated her help. Dr's Godwin, Paynter Keener and Fitzpatrick have been helpful in coaching us along the way and returned our calls with helpful answers on occasion, that have avoided us having to have an office visit. We have also boarded there on occasion and know they will get the best care we could ask for anywhere. read more

Here is my story: I have a rescue Scottie, who is my emotional support dog (I have MS), I was going to travel with him to Europe. I called this office (my Scottie is 11, we come here since I got him, 5 years now) a month in advance to make an appointment to get ready with my dog's passport. The assistant told me I have to be in 10 days frame, so she made an appointment for us 4 days prior to our trip. She was not correct, we needed 21 days: "Any rabies vaccination that occurs prior to microchip implantation is not considered valid regardless of whether the animal was up-to-date on its previous rabies vaccines. In this case, the animal must be revaccinated. 21 days must have elapsed after the first (primary) vaccination after implantation of the microchip before the animal is eligible to enter the European Union." So we went there yesterday, he had a microchip implantation (luckily they had a 15 digit type) he got his rabies booster and then they told me to come back (we drive 45 minutes to get here) because the paper work is going to take "very long". I told them about the distance we have to drive to get here, so we waited and waited and waited, and then Dr. Patricia Keener called us into her office she told us that she cannot sign my dog's papers because the 21 days must have elapsed after the first (primary) vaccination after implantation of the microchip. They charged me 138 dollars, and said "sorry", and bye. My problems with this: - I called in advance. - They go ahead and do the microchip implantation they don't do their homework, they knew why I've made that appointment in a month in advance. She greeted me as an "international traveler". - They ask me to go away and come back. - When I ask why is that 21 days thingy, Dr. Patricia Keener said the authorities want to make sure that dogs didn't get switched .... I have visited many websites about this, this 21 days was not a black-and-white statement - Dr. Patricia Keener talked down on me, treated me with a rush, a non-important case. She told me that she had an experience with an Australian case like this, and that was a "nightmare". So Dr. Keener, you made my experience with you a nightmare. Now here I am with my little emotional support dog, whom I have to leave behind for a month! I have to find him boarding (minimum 1000 dollars) and I will be in a hospital, and I won't have my dog. ----------------------------- My overall experience was okay with this office, but they really screwed me this time. __________________________________________________________ UPDATE: august. 2014 Dr. Robert Fitzpatrick euthanized our beloved rescue Scottish Terrier. I adopted my two cats from this practice in 2006. I have tried a couple of Vet Offices close to my house and was not impressed with the Vet, the staff and the offices were not clean. I drive 15 miles from Silver Spring to Laytonsville Vet and highly recommend them!! The office spaces are clean, the staff are professional and Dr. Godwin is very thorough and friendly. The only downfall is boarding for cats, they are housed with the dogs. I do not recommend for boarding a cat. read more

I take my dog here. The office is always very clean. They have excellent prices compared to every one else and I feel that they actually care about my dog. Dr. Fitzpatrick calls when he says he will and doesn't play games with my dog's health and when I need prescription refills through an online pharmacy not associated with this practice. I don't ever feel that I am being guilted into agreeing to unnecessary medical tests and procedures, like other veterinary practices have tried to pull off. RThe Mid Atlantic Chinese Shar Pei Rescue Operation has used Dr. Godwin and the Laytonsville Veterinary for many years. When ever we get a rescue in, the first place they go is Laytonsville. We know they will get a full exam to determine their condition even though we do not usually have any background info. Most dogs come in frighten and confused. They are all treated with compassion, kindness and soon understand that they are being helped - no longer abused or hurt. Physical problems that other veterians did not identify have been discovered and treated at this practice. After adoption most owner who live locally, continue to go to Dr. Godwin. I have been taking my dogs to Dr Godwin for almost 20 years. I have been through many situations and Dr Godwin has been great. I find her honest about treatments, trade offs, and costs. I don't board my animals so I cannot comment on that part. It is a busy practice so I have always had to wait past my appointment time to be seen. That is a bit annoying (thus 4 stars) but the care is worth it. As far as cost,the office visits are not much different from anywhere else in this area. The thing that drives up the cost are things like Heartgard ($100 for a 12 month supply for a large dog). However, that is the price so when comparing costs, one needs to compare apples to apples. read more

Our dog has issues with nail trim and Dr Fitzpatrick and his staff did a great job and even after a bit of sedation, our dog was not over medicated and in really good condition when I picked him up. 2nd time there and it was the same as before. The worst vet experience I have ever had. The receptionist was rude on the phone when making the appointment, and even ruder in person. I arrived with my pet 30 minutes before my appointment and was checked in, and after waiting an hour after my scheduled appointment with still no word on when my pet would be seen, I eventually asked how much longer the wait time would be. I was then told that there was still three people in front of me and it would be at least another hour at the minimum to be seen. Making an appointment served no purpose whatsoever, and the entire staff at the front desk was awful and unprofessional. Not even apologetic in the slightest. They couldn't have cared less that we were already waiting over an hour, and had no courtesy to tell us that it would be even longer. My pet was in a room full of loud barking dogs terrifying it for over an hour for absolutely nothing. I immediately left. I didn't want anyone who worked there to come near my pet. read more
