If you like Indian food, they are really good. This is my go to Indian place. They are never busy but that's just all the restaurants in the 9th square area. It isn't for lack of anything else. Their Indian food definitely meets the mark with the flavors and spices. I like their Indo-Chinese menu, especially their Hakka noodles. I think their Hakka noodles might be my personal favorite dish here but my traditional go-to at any Indian restaurant is tikka missala or butter chicken. The staff here is always friendly. On this visit, we got their fried cauliflower (Gobi Manchurin) and it was very hot but so tasty. Just be warned that it's SPICY. We also ordered Saag (spinach) but it's not my cup of tea. A super subtle detail but all of their tables have different spices and ingredients built into it which add to the vibe of the restaurant. It was also very cozy and good for groups and families. The service was also great! For food we got Tikka Masala, Dhaba wala kadai Chicken, and Cheese Chili Garlic Naan. The meal came with a side of rice. All the food was delicious! A little too salty for my liking though. However, the flavor was there. I wish the naan was a little thicker but if you like think and crispy you will like this one. We ended up getting lamb biryani, Hyderabadi gosht bahar, chicken korma, garlic naan, and mango kulfi for dessert. Everything was delicious. I forgot to get the name but I believe it was ras malai. You can see the crushed pistachios and the saffron on it. Lazeez sits directly across from the well-respected Japanese restaurant Miso on George Street. Its bright and colorful signage above its door greets you like the sun and the interior is just as warm and pleasant, with a lovely mural of a woman painted on one of the walls. It may not have white linens, but the table tops have an interesting decoupage sort of design with various shades of dried lentils and spices that looks hip and modern. I came here to meet and catch up with a special someone I hadn't seen in a while, and we both enjoyed our meals. To start, we shared the chickpea salad, which was simple but delicious. My companion had the lagan ka murgh and said it was very good. I had the chicken biryani and while it was very flavorful and good, I was a bit disappointed in the amount of chicken that was in it. There were maybe 5 or 6 chunks of chicken in a very large bowl of seasoned basmati rice. But it did all taste very good and I ended up taking half of the bowl home with me because I did get full. Apparently, one of the co-owners of Lazeez used to be a manager at Thali, so no wonder the food is so good. The staff is friendly and attentive, politely asking if they may clear plates, if you need drinks, etc. If you come on a weeknight, you'll be likely to find a metered parking space on either George or Crown Streets. If there are no spots along the street, there are some nearby lots and also a garage on the other side of Cafe Nine off of State Street, but I'm not sure what the situation is with those. Lazeez Indian Cuisine is an authentic Indian restaurant that opened in New Haven, Connecticut in September 2020. It was founded by business partners Mohammed Ayub and Aman Kant. The name Lazeez means "delicious" in Urdu. Ayub had previously been the general manager at the nearby Indian restaurant Thali for 10 years. Kant was a regular customer at Thali while it was still open. Once the former restaurant closed in 2017, the two decided to go into business together and make Ayub's long-term goal of opening a restaurant a reality. Ayub wanted to put a modern "foodie" twist on classic Indian dishes. His concepts are turned into realities by chef Bishno Sammar Khadka (also formerly of Thali). Rounding out the restaurant team is Amit Jaiswal (yet another former Thali employee) who serves as the manager-server-bartender-delivery man. Recently I was fortunate enough to be invited to an exclusive local foodie tasting event at Lazeez. Ayub talked to us for a while about the different dishes that we would be sampling as well as his vision for the restaurant. Jaiswal was also there to serve as our bartender for the evening and he was quite the character. We started off with some small plates which included Avocado Bhel Poori, Chilie Crab, and Dal Kachori. Bhel Poori is normally prepared with potato, so preparing it with avocado is Ayub's Modern foodie twist on the classic street food. From there, the dishes kept on coming to the table. Some of the other delicious dishes we sampled included Dilliwala Butter Chicken, Gobi Manchurian, Hakka Noodles, Langarwali Dal, Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Biryani, and plenty of Naan. My favorite dish was the Chicken Tandoori. Not only was it very flavorful but the presentation was perfect! To drink, I decided to do as the Indians do and try some Indian lagers: Kingfisher Premium Lager and Taj Mahal Premium Lager. Overall, all of us had a fantastic experience at Lazeez. What a delight! Delicately prepared Indian fare simmered in aromatic sauces. Each dish has a unique flavor enhanced by natural ingredients. For example, in the chicken korma, you get the flavor of ground cashew that is just delectable. The ambiance is casual chic and even though the dining room is not huge, we got a sense of privacy. The service is prompt and friendly. The servers wanted to make sure we were happy with our food and checked in with us repeatedly. The dishes were cleared the second we were done and the leftovers packed. While dining there, I noticed a lot of people coming in for takeout, so that's another popular option for customers. There's plenty of free street parking and a lot across the street that's free after hours and on weekends. Great new addition to Orange St! The restaurant wasn't particularly crowded this past weekend but we made a reservation just to be safe. Staff was very friendly and came around often. The menu here is a mix of Indian and Indo-Chinese food. Our party of four decided to split all the dishes rather than order our own items. We split an avocado (bhel puri I think?) which was a little small for 4 people as an appetizer, but very good. For our main dishes, we shared chicken tikka masala, laal maas (lamb) and a spicy shrimp that was under the Indo-Chinese list. They all came with rice as well and we got 2 orders of garlic naan. All the dinner items were quite tasty but we were almost about to fight over the shrimp - it was SO good. I might go back just for that! It definitely had a Chinese takeout kind of flavoring to it and was so good - nothing like what I've had in other Indian restaurants. As I mentioned earlier, our waitress was very friendly and came around often to give us more water and drinks. I felt good eating at an Indian restaurant after quite a while. I liked the location with ample parking options and potential for outdoor tables during warmer weather. Indoors is quite cozy and tastefully decorated, quite different than most Indian restaurants. Menu was perfect. Not too big, but enough options to satisfy most pallets. We ordered drinks, apps, main course and deserts. Drinks and deserts were quite standard, but the apps and main course were outstanding. Try the avocado bhel. We ordered pahadi kebab - very small amount for $11. Also, the chicken wasn't soft. The mutton Hyderabadi curry was $20 but there was hardly any mutton. Too much tomato. I have tried most of the Indian restaurants in New Haven, and this one is definitely up at the top of my list for favorites. The food is absolutely delicious, and I would strongly recommend the gobi manchurian and the langarwali dal (I have tried all the dal in New Haven and this one is the BEST). I'm knocking off 1 star for 2 reasons. First, the service is fairly slow. I understand it's a newer restaurant so perhaps the staff isn't used to a faster turn around time between ordering, getting the food, and getting the check. Second, we asked to sit outside at an empty table and were told there was a reservation so we sat inside. The reservation party did not show up until we were leaving, plus the staff accommodated other parties who wanted to sit outside by bringing tables and chairs out for them. read more
