Came back in mid October for lunch. An influencer on instagram posted here and said it was recently renovated with cool decor and I thought she posted that they had these funky looking Indian "pizzas." I'm sure it looks better at night, for it wasn't anything special during the day. The velvet couch we sat on was nice though. Unfortunately we didn't arrive until about 15 minutes prior to lunch service being over. Hours posted for lunch were until 3:00, however upon arriving there was a sign on the door saying they stop serving lunch at either 2:30 or 2:45 (don't remember as again this was mid October). We felt bad walking in there because there was only maybe 1 or 2 other tables in there still, however they said we were welcome to sit and have lunch. We said we'd be quick.We really shouldn't have done this because it was clear they wanted us out quickly. The menu was a bit confusing. "Choose one protein, one sauce, and one bread OR vegetarian dish and a bread (Plain Naan, Garlic Naan, Tandoori roti)." Ok? We ended up splitting a Chicken Tikka masala and the cucumber appetizer (don't remember what it was called). He forgot to bring the cucumber app until we were done with the entree and we didn't realize it was a dip. We ended up taking that home. The last ten minutes of us eating our waiter was staring at us and clearly wanted us to wrap up. Again, I wouldn't come here close to 3:00 for lunch. That was a mistake. As far as the food, the Tikka masala could have used a tad more flavor (we asked for it mild but could have bumped that up a bit) and I didn't care for the cucumber appetizer. It was minty? and spicy. Overall I feel that House of Naan is better for New Haven Indian cuisine. read more

I've been hearing nothing but great things about Sitar so me and my bestie went to check them out since she also loves Indian food. You walk in and you're immediately met with the smell of delicious cooking that will instantly get you excited for the meal that's about to come. I decided to have a strawberry lassi because I've never had one before, I normally always get a mango one, and I'm glad I did because it was delish! We kicked off with the lamb samosas and veggie platter and WOW what FLAVORS. Each bite was an experience, and so so tasty. My friend got the chicken biryani and I went with the chicken tikka masala and can I just say how impressed I was that our food stayed warm the whole entire time? Like it was still steaming as we packed it away, I was so impressed with that because there's nothing I hate more than lukewarm food being brought out to me. Regardless of that, my masala was incredible and I was sad I had to stop myself so I could save room for dessert. Because then I filled up on basically all of the cheese naan and it is some of the best I have ever had and if you're visiting New Haven and want authentic Indian food, this is the place to go. read more

Sitar is amazing! We came here as a group of 3 for lunch. They have a great lunch deal which they say is served in "lunch portions" but I thought was still a good amount of food. For all their food, they ask for a spice level (I believe the options are mild, medium, and spicy). We started off with the Achari Gobi which we got as medium (I believe) and it was quite spicy! We all loved it. Each of us got a curry - Saag, tikka masala, and vindaloo. They were all great and the spice levels we requested (one mild and 2 spicy) were all very appropriate and delicious. Orderd takeout for lunch, and I am obsessed with how good the food is! I ordered the lunch special Chicken Tikka Masala & garlic Naan, to drink a mango Lassi and for dessert some kheer! One of my go-to Indian restaurants in New Haven! The first thing they gave us when we sat down were a few flavorful crackers with sauces as a snack and it was already off to a great start. We got my go-to orders of Bhindi Masala (a staple Indian dish made with okra, whole and ground spices, herbs, onions & tomatoes) and Saag Paneer (a popular Indian vegetarian dish made of spinach and other leafy greens (called saag) and paneer (Indian cottage cheese)) and we were very satisfied. It all came with a large side of rice. It didn't look like a lot when the food arrived, but it turned out to be a lot more than we expected. I think both dishes could have used some more spices + flavor which is why I give this place 4/5 stars, but it was still great. The two of us shared both and we even had a decent amount of leftovers to take home and enjoy later! Because of that, I found it was reasonably priced. The interior was home-y and next door, there was a even a family party going on (looked like a birthday celebration?) Would definitely come again in the future. 4.5 stars. Came here after touring Yale with my family and it was definitely worth it. We ordered off the lunch special menu, you can pick a sauce, a protein, and a bread (Naan, Garlic Naan, Tandoori Roti). For me, I chose the saag with paneer and garlic naan. The saag paneer was super flavorful and eating it with the garlic naan was so good. The lunch special also comes with rice and the quantity of rice you get was plenty. The vegetable samosas were also really good. Perfectly crispy on the outside, and inside is nice and fluffy and very well seasoned. They also come with three sauces, and I really enjoyed the tamarind sauce. However I do feel that the samosas were a bit expensive, $6 for 2, but the lunch special was around $13 which I think was really good value for the quality and quantity of food you get. The service was also really good; the waitress consistently checked up on us and even switched out our plates after we finished the samosas. I really appreciate how attentive our server was. I recently moved to Ct. and was thrilled to see Sitar on Door Dash. I don't know if it is related to the restaurant that used to be in Spfld, MA. We used to go there for lunch breaks and celebration meals. We were all very sad to see it go. I can now state that Sitar New Haven is wonderful! It's been a while since I visited Sitar and this visit back was nothing short of fun!! The nostalgic feel of being back here felt so good and Sitar still reigns as one of the best Indian restaurants in New Haven, and possibly in CT. My friends and I were very well taken care of by Vasanth (spell check) and the food was amazing. I got the paneer masala and garlic naan. They have plenty of options for vegetarians which is one of the main reasons I love them. I'm so eager to go back again this summer. read more

I've only ordered delivery and takeout from them. They were my go to place throughout the pandemic. Everythimg was always delicious and on time, with generous portion sizes. Their lamb is the most tender I've had at any Indian restaurant. It melts in your mouth every time, which is hard to do, since lamb can overcook quickly in curries. I got one of their lunch deals delivered on a winter weekend. It was very quick. The lunch menu is short, but the prices are those good ol' lunch deal prices. I got the chicken tikka masala, and Tim M got the lamb saag. Both dishes were just ok. I know lunch sizes are meant to be smaller, but the lamb saag only had three pieces of lamb in it. Flavors were good, but I was a little irked that the dish wasn't more green. The chicken masala was also ok, though I found the chicken a bit chewy, as if it was over cooked and/or once frozen. Overall, the food here is definitely on the lighter side for Indian, which I definitely appreciate. It seems that they aren't as cream-based as many other Indian restaurants I've tried. The garlic naan was piping hot and delicious, but could have used a tad bit more salt/garlic. The shrimp was tender and juicy, but the curry it was in was a bit too tomato-y. Finally, the chicken vindaloo was savory but missing just a little bit of that signature spicy/savory taste. Overall, the portions were very generous. There weren't a lot of people in the restaurant at all, which is very spacious. This made for fast/frequent service. Location wise, it's a little past the Whitney/Grove intersection off by itself down the street on Grove, so a bit random, but definitely not far from campus. In summary, I would say the food here is solid but lacking a little special something that makes it irresistible. This place is a solid traditional American style Indian sit-down restaurant in New Haven. It has everything you would expect from one of these places with above average service and food quality. The menu doesn't have anything too special, but has all of the classic dishes you would be looking for. All of the food I had seemed fresh and well-seasoned. The samosas and onion bhaji were hot and crispy. The chana masala I had was delicious and very spicy as requested. The poori bread is also hot and fresh. The waiters were attentive and nice. They can accommodate vegan customers on many dishes by leaving out the ghee on things like chana masala, bindhi masala, beigan bartha, aloo gobi, etc. Sitar is a good option for a reasonably priced Indian comfort food meal. This is the lunch buffet designed for your entire office (even the picky eaters), your parents from a small town in a state with a lot of vowels, and your best friend who moved to California to study holistic therapy. Though short, it is an ideal lunch buffet for diverse parties. The day I ate there: 1. Both appetizers and at least two (possibly three) mains were vegetarian. (There is also salad.) 2. The chicken tikka masala was made with all white meat, for eaters who are scared of everything. 3. The tandoori chicken was all dark meat, for eaters who scoff at the white-meat-only crowd. 4. There is goat curry, for eaters who are scared of nothing. (You know that one guy who'll tell you all about goat.) 5. Everything is extremely mildly spiced (with the possible exception of the goat curry, which I didn't try because I'm not that one guy who'll tell you about goat). A baby would not be overheated by the lunch-time spice levels. The atmosphere is pleasant; the service is pleasant; the food is pleasant, if conventional. It's all so extremely pleasant that I feel a little guilty about being uninspired, though a lot of that can be chalked up to the low spice level and very basic buffet selection. If you're in the area and want very safe, very pleasant Indian food with no surprises, Sitar is a great pick. read more
