I can't speak to the ambience as I used DoorDash, but I will say I appreciate their custom packaging and for stapling the bag to secure the contents. I actually tried calling the restaurant to make this request, but they didn't answer after a few attempts. Fortunately, they did it proactively. I ordered the Beef Thukpa (cold spicy noodles) and the Sha Khodhak. The cold noodles were good, and I appreciated the cake, although not too spicy. What I do like, even though it may not be the traditional way to eat it as you can microwave it if you choose. If I were to order it again, I might try it warmed up. But for me, the star of the show Sha Khodhak. The tomato sauce was so richly flavored. Absolutely perfect and spiced to perfection. They did not skim with the chicken and they did not add an unnecessary amount of bell pepper and onion. It was perfectly balanced. The leftovers came together even more the next day. It's not too often that you come across a Tibetan restaurant so I've had this place on my list for a few months. I would like to try more of what they offer, but it's going to be hard not to order the Sha Khodhak again. read more

Tibetan Kitchen is a cozy, welcoming, vegetarian friendly Tibetan Restaurant. We arrived around six o'clock and were promptly welcomed and seated. There are six or so tables in the space. The service was excellent and we were impressed by all of the vegan and vegetarian options on the menu. The vegetable momos were packed with flavor and served with a sauce. The iced chai was spicy and delicious, just perfect. Our waitress was kind and attentive. The whole experience reminded me of being welcomed into someone's home. We got Tingmo (Tibetan steamed bun) which was like a Chinese ManTou, Tsel Momo (pan fried veggie and cheese dumplings), Tsel Thenthuk (Tibetan noodle soup) -- the bowl of soup was HUGE, Veg Phing (veggie soup with rice) and the portions were all worth the price! The dishes were all so flavorful and delicious. We were completely satisfied. The service was also so great -- the staff were friendly and the food came out quickly! The service here was the worst I've had. On Thursday, my friend took me to Tibetan Kitchen for my birthday. The waitress was incredibly rude. She rolled her eyes when I said I was not ready to order. Then less than a minute later, she loomed over our table waiting for me to choose an entree. She cleaned off our table as we were still siting down, without a "thank you" or "goodbye." We had to leave in such a rush that my friend ended up leaving her wallet at the restaurant. The food itself left much to be desired in terms of flavor. I would not return. read more

Run, don't walk, to Tibetan Kitchen! My food smelled so good that I couldn't spare a second for a photo, I had to dive right in. Having only had Tibetan cuisine once prior, many of the dishes were unfamiliar to me. I ended up ordering the chicken soup and the Kewa Datshi, a dish of potatoes and peppers in a spicy cheese sauce. The chicken soup was delicious, the perfect remedy to my cold. I honestly think it might have healed me! And the potatoes.... oh my goodness! So delicious. The flavor combination was totally unlike any I've tried before. The sauce was richly savory, spicy, tangy, and creamy, and the potatoes were cooked perfectly. Everything was perfectly balanced. Like home cooking, but 3 steps above that :) V4 tsel momo (mixed veggies and cheese): I've never had a dumpling like this before! Would get again. The inside is similar to maybe a zucchini and cabbage blend with a melty cheese similar to mozzarella. The sauce it is served with has quite a spice kick, so a little goes a long way. (I'm a spice weenie slowly building up my tolerance, so I can handle like a decent amount of Truff sauce or Melinda's black truffle sauce for reference.) Ss5 thukpa dhrang-mo: This is basically a cold sesame chili oil noodle. Refreshing, not too oily, not too spicy either, but not bland. It's nice when you can get the flavor of the spice but not go overboard with it. Would get again. B5 mango dhara: This is like a more liquid version of your typical mango lassi. I liked it a lot, but too much ice. Medium sweet and yogurty. N8 sha khodak: I have a preference for sweet, so I enjoyed this sweeter savory dish the most. It is like golden curry with beef/chicken and bell peppers, but with a more rich tomato base. So good with rice! N5 jha-shah curry: This was good, but not my favorite and I don't know that I would choose this over other dishes. It is not sweet at all, just savory, and has quite a spice kick (spice weenies BEWARE ^_^). You will need a lot of rice! V10 kewa datse: They know how to cook potatoes here! If I had to compare this to something American, it would be a broccoli cheddar soup but it is very different than that lol It is a creamy soup with delicious, perfectly cooked potatoes. An absolute gem. This place offers a wonderfully diverse menu with something for everyone. I ordered the Shaptak (beef) at a level 5 spice (spice scale was 1-5). The heat was definitely there but not overpowering and was very enjoyable on the palate. My fiancé had the phing-sha which was super delicious. My brother had the same as me but had it with chicken and a level 4 spice. I think the chicken was the way to go but I enjoyed them both a lot. The tingmo is also a nice side to order. Some of the dishes here were excellent. I loved the butter salted tea to start, which was one of the specials listed on the chalk board. It had a subtle flavor that I'm sure would be hard to replicate if you don't have practice. The appetizers weren't the best part of the meal but were a nice addition. I didn't taste much sesame in the cold noodles, and the other appetizer, made with peas, tofu and potato was mostly potato. The dumplings were perfectly fried (lightly) and juicy, much better than your average fare. I ordered the beef noodle soup, which was very good, aromatic with a combination of shredded beef with ground beef on top. My dish was very hot and took a while to cool down, so I was falling behind the rest of my party in finishing my meal... Something to bear in mind if you choose this option. The waiter was attentive and made sure to ask if there was anything else we wanted to order before the kitchen closed for two hours. We went on a Saturday afternoon and didn't realize how small the dining room is. The place fills up quickly, so you might have to wait to be seated. The dining room is cozy with wooden tables, and the place is decorated modestly in Tibetan style. I would recommend going here and taking your time over a hot meal while enjoying the ambiance. read more

A small little restaurant on the quieter side of Chapel St. Feel free to spin the prayer wheels (clockwise) as you walk in! I came here with two other friends on a Tuesday morning, and it was really cozy. We had the whole place to ourselves and we ended up all ordering the same thing in different spice levels. 3 is comfortable, 4 is enjoyable, and 5 is a bit much unless your tastebuds have already died. There is also extra chili on the table so you can add more to your liking. Flavor was great, no complaints about service. Will be bringing more friends over. read more

Hands down the best restaurant in downtown New Haven in terms of taste, value, and service. The staff members were so attentive and patient, especially in providing suggestions. While my partner got the lab-sha (fatty beef with rice), I got the thenthuk (a noodle soup with radish, bok chow, and beef). In both dishes, the broth was incredibly rich and the meat tender. The thenthuk was definitely our favorite. We also loved our cold dish appetizer, the thukpa dhrangmo with beef, which had hints of chili and sesame oil. Beware of the spice levels though -- the waiter was stunned at my desire for the thenthuk with spice level four (I got a three which was a good decision in retrospect). Also, try the hot chai or the dhara (a mango yogurt drink). The only regret I had after my meal was not discovering this place sooner. We will definitely be coming back! read more

Just visiting New Haven for a day and looked for interesting restaurants near our hotel. This restaurant had gotten a great write up in the New York Times (before when they were in their former Middletown location). We had an amazing dinner here! We had the chicken momos (handmade dumplings), a chicken dish with a flavorful red sauce and peppers and a dish with tofu and vegetables in a broth (sorry I didn't remember the Tibetan names). Portions were good and the entrees came with rice. They adjusted to our spice levels. Every dish was delicious! I also had the coconut rice pudding for dessert which was light and refreshing (not too sweet but I like that). Service was great and friendly. This review is long overdue as I dined here the week they moved to New Haven from Middletown. I have always been a stan of this place, good portions, everything is labeled vegetarian (the vegetarian items without cheese are vegan!) and everything had excellent flavor. I braved the rains to get the Tsei Thenthuk (tofu noodle soup) from here and reader, it was definitely worth it! Bonus because if you use their website to order pick-up vs the apps (you know the ones), you get customer loyalty pricing so the food is even more affordable. The Tsel Momo looked gorgeous but was just okay. The dining space is a bit small but you won't be too on top of other diners. Definitely come here and dine, the food is presented lovingly and it's at a prime location near the British Art Museum and other sightseeing options. read more

Wonderful! Four of us stopped in at 6:00 on a Saturday night and were seated immediately, as there was only one other occupied table at that time. This changed pretty quickly, as the place is TINY! The restaurant is lovingly decorated and cozy. The drink options are non-alcoholic, so we all had various kinds of tea. I had the ginger tea, which was lovely. We started with some shared starters, the Himalayan Ne-zom (tofu and veggies in tomato sauce) and Thukpa Dhrangmo (cold sesame noodles).Very flavorful, although both were labeled "spicy" and I've had much spicier food in other Tibetan places. This was remedied by using some of the crunchy pepper condiment on the table. (Think a bit like Chinese chili crisp, but without the oil.) That stuff is a revelation and luckily available for purchase, which I happily did. Our shared mains included Keema Thukpa, a noodle soup with beef and bok choy in some of the most intensely flavorful broth I've ever had. We also had pork and vegetarian dumplings. (Friendly warning: the pork ones were soup dumplings which let out an unexpected stream of broth.) The veggie "momo" was full of a beautifully-seasoned cabbage that reminded me of the best pierogis I've ever had. Desserts were simple, Tibetan rice pudding and Gulab Jamun, an Indian-style cheese dumpling with syrup and spices. Both light and just what we needed to end the meal. The place fills up quickly, so come early, and they don't take reservations. There were lots of people waiting to be seated by the time we were done. Luckily, the service is efficient and super-friendly and warm and it never got noisy, even when full. When we come again, we may bring more friends so we can try even more dishes. Was excited when i saw that there was a Tibetan place! We pick-up the food. Honestly, id give this place a 3.5 Good: had the sha-momo pan fried dumplings. Very savory and juicy! The fried rice was soft and flavorful, with chicken. The chilli chicken was spicy and savory, and the veggies really brought a crunch to the dish. The noodle soup (Thenthuk) was cooked well but had a predominate salt flavor and nothing much else. In addition, the noodles (gyathuk ngopa) were excessively oily and needed more seasoning. It was a fine place to try, and we sampled the menu with some diversity. I am open to give this place a chance again, and will likely try other items to get a more comprehensive scale of Tibetan cuisine read more

I came here on a Saturday evening for dinner after have a few drinks at a place down the street. It was small and very cozy inside and decorated nicely. We were greeted right away and given a menu. The food was AMAZING. I had been wanting to come to this restaurant for a while since the food on the menu isn't very common and was so glad I did. High quality ingredients, well cooked, and all reasonably priced. I will say the dumplings they have are the best thing to get. The ambiance is what first strikes you, feels intimate and very reminiscent of Tibet/Nepal... the door handles, buddhist gongs and prayer bells. The food was fantastic, and lots of vegetarian options... and plus you can choose the level of spiciness, awesome!
