There was quite a wait on a Sunday morning, however, the food made up for the wait. The decor and vibe are really cool. The location is a little unusual, being part of an old mall turned into an artsy shopping hub. There is a door outside of the mall to access the restaurant directly. Two notable dishes from our visit were the breakfast quesadilla (soooo good!) and the biscuits with mushroom gravy. The service was slow, however, it was a Sunday. We loved the place so much we booked a reservation for our next visit down to see our son at U of I. The restaurant also has a coffee bar where you can get special coffee drinks, and some random handheld foods. The seating area is eclectic and inviting. This place was within walking distance of my cousins house so I walked down for a quick bite. I was quickly seated. The menu looked delicious but I choose the Ruben based on the servers rec. it was great. The corned beef was tasty, the cheese was the perfect amount. Nicely warmed on a seedless marbled rye. The salad was so fresh with an incredible greed goddess dressing that is house made. The restaurant has a cozy cafe feel. I do feel it's a bit pricey for a college town. I know if I were a student that I couldn't afford over $20 plus gratuity for a sandwich, side salad and soda. The biggest pancake I've ever seen! I loved the ambiance and service of this restaurant, which I only went to for the signature large pancake. I wish I had more of an appetite to try some of their other dishes! The pancake was what you would expect. It was pretty good! What a pleasant surprise! I came here looking for a simple breakfast and left impressed with the food. Though the spot isn't as fancy looking as other popular breakfast spots, this restaurant was packed and the servers did a good job of serving everyone at a reasonable speed. This spot is slightly pricey compared to other breakfast options, but pretty reasonable given the quality of the ingredients and the portion sizes. The trusty plate is a great option if you want to try a few different options. The chorizo'd tofu is delicious, seasoned well, and has just the right amount of savoriness if you're looking for a change of pace. The sausage is very juicy and flavorful, one of the best that I've had at any breakfast restaurant. The pancakes are done well and enjoyable as well. The caramelized leige waffle is another great options, maybe slightly on the sweet side for me -- but I really enjoyed the batter and mix of flavors. I was so excited to learn that there was a new spot in town! It was such a letdown that this place is meh! The set up is fairly intimate. I guess the black and white floor could be considered charming. Listen, I love a good breakfast/brunch spot and unfortunately, this place does not deliver. I've tried on two separate occasions and both times I left disappointed. The first time I tried the Liège waffles with hash browns and sausage. The hash browns were literally the worst I've had (see pic). Had to send them back a few times and finally just said forget it. Either they are too soggy or they're burnt to a crisp potato chip strings, golden apparently is not an option. The sausage was also not my favorite. Hearing they made it fresh in their kitchen intrigued me... if I go back, I'll just stick with the bacon. The biscuits and gravy (not pictured) are also BLAND... The waffles had this weird twang to it that I struggled to get over. It's something between the ingredients in the waffle and the syrup, not a cohesive match, despite all the butter... and butter makes everything better (usually). The second visit I had eggs, bacon and pancakes. The eggs and bacon were fine enough. The pancakes -- I stopped after the first couple of bites. I just could not get over the weird taste, it's definitely not buttermilk. The texture is great, the taste is not! Perhaps being a newer establishment, these are growing pains. I sure hope these folks get it figured out as Champaign has a few solid contenders in the breakfast/brunch space and I can't say this place has a spot in the ranks. read more

Picturesque spot to have your brunch. Consider going on the later side, since the lunch menu is more promising. The meal we ordered was very uneven in its preparation. The strongest item was the GrünBaum salad, which is massaged kale (and chard?) served with toasted seeds and nuts. The greens were tender and the nuts gave it a delightful crunch. (The dressing was mostly vinegar and oil with tahini to bind it. Go lightly since it doesn't add much.) We also ordered the "trusty plate" with hash browns and veggie sausage. It was competently prepared but not memorable. However, we will not forget to avoid the pancakes. We ordered the short stack from the kids menu (which we were told is the same batter as the giant pancake on the regular menu). The pancakes were both dry and dense. Bathing them in syrup helped the first issue but nothing would help the second. They just needed more baking powder in the mix (or perhaps it had stood too long). The decor is cute so you'll want to find a dish worth coming back to sit down again. You may find it on the lunch menu since it has a wider variety of ingredients, textures, and flavors. read more

Lazy Daisy Cafe & Diner is exactly what downtown Urbana needed! Good coffee and tasty food! We ate here on Easter Sunday for brunch and it was hopping! I love that they use an online reservation program so we were seated shortly after we arrived. We had a variety of entrees including Shrimp & Grits, corned beef hash, lazy stack, cheese omelet, and a couple of trusty plates! Everyone was happy with their entrees and had plenty of food. The waffles were good but the fruit that came with it was very small. For caramelized waffles, they were not very sweet. My husband ordered the trusty plate. The sausage was excellent. SKIP THE CORN BEEF SANDWICH unless you like square chunks of corn beef - I imagined it would be more like slices of CB. The accompanying potatoes were not well seasoned. The Trusty Plate was decent - hashbrowns were a bit brown and greasy. Definitely try the flat sausages. The water tasted funny. There is a wait during lunch hour. But at least there is a flea market (If you're into that kind of thing) that's inside the strip mall, next to the diner that you can peruse while waiting. The decor is kitschy. We've eaten here twice and I just love the place. The vibe is so funky and laid back. My first experience I tried the corned beef hash and it was really good! Not the best I've ever had but definitely still very good. Our second trip we went as a whole family and everyone enjoyed it! We shared a giant pancake and my kids absolutely loved it. Set alongside an entrance to Urbana's vibrant community space, Lincoln Square Mall, sits the new, much needed, Lazy Daisy Diner & Cafe. My husband and I decided to take our adult niece to breakfast for her birthday on a Saturday, so we could eat and then walk around the Urbana Market at the Square, and to do a little shopping at Common Ground, after. When we arrived there was a short wait, which we expected being a market Saturday coupled with the popularity of this new breakfast spot. We gave our mobile number and left to walk around, not even ten minutes later, we received a text stating our table was ready! The folks at the host stand weren't overly friendly, but no matter, they stayed on business and got us to our table, and made sure we all had menus. Job well done in a very busy diner! We got a corner booth, which was comfy and quiet. So cute. Menu is not extensive, but it is diverse and creative, so there is something for everyone. If you are looking for a standard skillet and omelette place, this isn't it, you might want to try another local breakfast place, but if you want fun, new creative possibilities, this is it. Also, I liked that there were both sweet and savory options, which is nice for those who do not particularly care for traditional breakfast fare. Coffee came quickly, hot, delicious. It is from Columbia Street Roasters, so not bad, not stellar, just fine. Not my personal favorite, but it served the morning need for caffeine. We finally made our menu selections, I ordered the Trusty Plate with two eggs over easy, hashbrowns, bacon, and a side of their sourdough (which I asked for extra toasted), my husband ordered the Everything Bagel Sandwich with a side of fruit, and my niece ordered the Chickpea Salad Sandwich with a side salad. Our food came out in less than ten minutes. Everything looked great. Our server was amazing. Here is where Lazy Daisy lost me, and where it gets hard to describe my issue with this establishment. The food was good, but not excellent. Nothing tasted like it was supposed to taste. Let me try to explain, the eggs were cooked in some kind of oil that was not pleasant to eat, and were definitely cooked either in a pan used to cook other eggs on repeat or on a griddle with the same issue. They need to clean out the pan/griddle after each cook - or the eggs will taste like smoke/fried oil. Then the hashbrowns, which were cooked to perfection, but didn't have any seasoning whatsoever - there was absolutely no flavor of anything, not potato, not oil, not butter, and definitely no salt or pepper. Just potato texture and the crisp we want, but no flavor. The bacon, thick and crispy, but bland - not smoky or sweet, and lacked any porky flavor. I kept trying to figure out if it was me, or if my senses were really going through this bizarre lackluster experience. I became more and more disappointed. I put salt and pepper, and hot sauce, and in the end even put ketchup! The toast was not extra toasted, as I had asked, and if you know anything about sourdough, without toasting it crispy, can become gooey, or doughy when just warmed. Who wants that with their breakfast? The bread is homemade, not one I had tasted before - it has a very sour taste, and not a very good one. It leaves an aftertaste. Not sure what was up with that, but it was unpleasant to eat. I brought the rest home to see if actually toasting it would help - it did not. My breakfast was the four star meal - and should be their anchor meal. My husband's bagel sandwich was excellent. I will order that next time! My niece said her sandwich was good, but she had the same complaint about the bread. Her salad was excellent! The price was a little high for what we ordered, and considering the quality of the items served. Bottom line: If you are going to have a small artisanal menu, make it the highest quality, and get folks who know how to execute even the most basic of breakfast items, like an over-easy egg. I should not be hunting for flavor on a plate of eggs and hashbrowns. I wanted to love it. We will go back, but maybe just to try the cafe. read more

The location is in the vicinity of the U of I campus and had good reviews, so we decided to check it out. It is a nice space, clean, and the food was great! You definitely get your money's worth with the portion size. We ordered a giant pancake for the table to share and it was delicious. Slightly crispy on the outside and really good flavor even without butter and syrup. There were several corned beef hash orders, biscuits and gravy, and BLTs. Everyone was happy with their food. We were invited to the soft opening today and had an excellent meal. There were 6 of us so lots of different menu items were sampled. The Reuben's are huge and tasty - served with waffle fries. Two of us had the corned beef hash and eggs with a side of roasted root veg (which was super). I had the Daisy Burger which was perfectly cooked and served with fresh pickles, lettuce, and tomatoes. The interior is very cute and quirky. The adjoining cafe serves wine and coffee drinks and will soon have seating in the mall. There is a new diner coming to Urbana and I just had the honor of getting a sneak peek. From the funky decor to great food to friendly staff and owners, you are going to want to get there as soon as they are open. The coffee was solid the mimosa was everything you want for Sunday brunch. I started with the Breakfast Charcuterie Board which was a great way to get to taste a variety of things--eggs, sausage, toast, mini pancakes, fruit. All was delicious but the sausage was the best with a really great flavor and perfectly cooked to be covered in good caramelized bits. Out of curiosity, I ordered the Giant Pancake--it was the size of a pizza. It was tasty and served with butter and real maple syrup. It was way more than I could eat but it would be perfect to share with a friend or feed to a hungry teen.
