I had a disappointing experience when it came time to pay my bill. My server rang me up at the register, but the total amount quickly disappeared from the screen as I was prompted to scan my card. I started entering my email to receive a receipt--something I always do to track my spending--but the server hurried me to sign a paper receipt instead and never gave me a copy. Later, I checked the digital receipt and realized a 15% tip had already been added before I manually wrote in an additional 20% on the paper receipt--meaning the server received a 35% tip. Totally forgot to check in, but I'll explain why. I ended up ordering curbside pickup for my food. I'm a huge fan of authentic Mexican tacos and according to Yelp, this was the place to go in the area. Being from Chicago, I'm a pretty tough critic. I ordered online, selected the curbside pickup option, put my car details in and arrived at the designated time the food would be ready. Upon arrival I waited about 10 minutes and still no food. I could see food sitting on the counter that was packaged and ready to go. Finally after about 20 minutes of waiting I walked in and sure enough, my food was sitting to the side. So, this would have been a 5 star review, but since I not only had to wait, but also had to go inside, I deducted a star. Just being honest. NOW FOR THE FOOD. It was fire. I got the steak tacos with a side of rice and beans and a large margarita to go. The tacos were delicious. The sauces were flavorful. The beans were good, but the rice was a bit too mushy for me. The chips and salsa came with the meal and were delicious as well. You could tell the chips were homemade and salted to perfection. The margarita was STRONG. Highly recommend that! Overall I will be back, probably won't do curbside pickup and just walk myself inside, but I will be back, especially to try those birria tacos. read more

Tried another Mexican restaurant in the Champaign/Urbana area, and La Mixteca and overall it was average. Glad they made their salsa in house, but unfortunately it was too salty. Taco meats were ok, the meats could have been a little bit more tender. There's a mix of traditional Mexican food and Americanized Mexican food on their menu. If you eat here, then make sure you go to El Oasis just across the shopping plaza parking lot to get some Mexican dessert. read more

I'm in town visiting my family and friends and decided to try some new spots! Had the Birria Quesadilla and it was soooo good! The meat was tender and the cheese was gooey! I love birria tacos but the quesadilla was so much better. Next time I'm going to have to dine in so I can have it fresh out the kitchen instead of out of the box. It always gets soggy but they were still good. It comes with beans and rice, and some lettuce and sour cream to put on top of the quesadilla. I dipped them in the sauce with the lettuce and sour cream and without. BUT MAY I SAY, I do not like refried beans but these were pretty good with the cheese on top. I also loved the chips and queso. Their chips tasted so fresh and airy.. like the chip had a nice width and crunch. It wasn't like most places that have the flat crisp chip. Definitely a new spot I will be visiting whenever I come home to visit! read more

The food here is okay. Fairly pricy for what it is (mostly, generic Americanized dishes with a few more "authentic" things, if you know what to order), but I'll never go back for a couple reasons: 1) the service was a joke, and 2) there are way better places in town (try Maize, Hauraches Moroleon, Los Hidalguense, or Fernando's). I came at lunch time on a weekday. The restaurant had one server and four tables of people. After taking our order, I saw him only once when he brought the food. I eventually had to walk to the counter to ask for the check. All in all, I was there about 50 minutes, which is just not workable for lunch on a business day. The food was okay, but again, there are much better places in town. The salsa were unique, but they came in little to-go cups that made it difficult to dip chips into. No excuse for this when someone is dining in. The combination of average food with poor service was enough to write this place off entirely. My lunch partners felt the same. read more

Didn't dine in so can't rate the service, but can rate the food! We called ahead and the food was ready in a timely manner. When we went in to pick it up, the staff was also so kind to give us a free chicken quesadilla since the customer who ordered it never showed. As for the food, the fish tacos were the star! Fish was still crispy and the sauce on top was delicious. A wonderful mix of flavor and textures. My friends had steak and al pastor tacos in both mexican and american style; they were good but not exceptional. Steak was a little dry. The chips and salsa variety's were really good. And lastly, the quesadilla was cold when we tried it (obviously not their fault) so nothing exceptional either. Overall though, a great experience for the first time. My second time here, my boyfriend got the birria tacos and they were good as well! A bit dry to me. But, the rice and beans were a good compliment and the dish was definitely worth the price. Blown away by how amazing the food was! We ordered takeout and got a couple of items because we were so excited! We got the Birrekeka , the Seafood molcajete and the Carne Veracruz meal. Typically the food we've gotten here is good. The service however is insanely bad. When dining in, my husband and I ordered food and when we received it, the server told me sorry, we didn't have what you ordered but here's this. We can make you something else if you'd like. Who doesn't ask before they bring the order out? And another time I ordered via Toast. I received an email saying there may be a problem with my order and to call the business. I called and inquired if they received the order. The guy asked what I ordered and said they had it. Then asked when I'd be there. I told him toast said it would be done at this time. He asked again, when are you coming? I said 5-10 minutes then he hung up on me. I go to get the order and they wanted to see my receipt. Toast was down for them, so they'll start making it now. I was surprised this showed up on the local facebook feed before Yelp so I decided to go here on Father's Day. It has only been opened a week or so. There has not been any significant advertisement around town. As always new restaurants have a lot of kinks. When we entered, the wait staff told us to seat ourselves. After 10 minutes, no one came with a menu so my wife went up from to get a menu to review. There are a lot of traditional mexican food options including huarches which is a very traditional mexican dish served on masa dough with beans and other toppings. I went with the traditional order of steak, pork, and chicken tacos (mexican style with cilantro and onions on a corn tortilla). While waiting, they gave a basket of chips and salsa. The chips are tortillas they self fry and quite oily as well. Unfortunately my tacos were not different. The flavors for the protein were spot on, but the dripping greasy left something to be desired. After your meal you go up front to pay. Unfortunately I do not share the same enthusiasm as some of the other reviewers, however the dishes appear to be home made and more traditional than other restaurants Pros: home made dishes, free chips/salsa Cons: very slow service, food is super greasy Hidden deals: None so far Health code rating: A. Stopped by for a quick meal on my way through town. I am super happy I did! Wait staff was fast and friendly, and the menu had any different options, all authentically Mexican and some with an American twist. They also had a long list of drinks, including Margaritas and Mexican sodas. Their chips are definitely homemade, and while a little greasy were delicious, was was the salsa. I got a Pastor taco plate, which came with beans and rice. The pork was mildly spicy but not overpowering, and was juicy and flavorful. The beans and rice are tasty. My friend got a quesadilla, which was surprisingly covered in a cheese sauce, which was delicious and was a good balance of fillings and cheese. first off the waiter was smug and rude as hell should have left right then, but we went here a couple of times and it was pretty good. this time however service was atrocious, pushy and again rude. ordered a chicken chi chonga which to me is always fried, but what i got was a burrito with what appeared to be some busted ass chicken tenders left over from a child's meal...covered in queso cheese sauce, was mooshy and so gross, got our food..no fkn silverware, my friend had to go and ask for it as our food sat while waiting on the waiter, the chips were like the bottom of the barrel crap not a whole chip in the basket and greasy, salsa come in some bunk little condiment portion cups like a 2 oz shot cup w/ lid. once we got our food never saw the waiter again, had to flag down a waitress to ask for a refill on my coke and asked 3 times still no refill.. got a coke had to pay $3.00 says free refills...no refills...asked again for a coke and our check, took 20 minutes to get the check which was unreadable umm printer ink out? could not even see how much or what i was paying for. said to the waitress that i could not read it she started reading what i ordered and obvious language barrier, then it took another 15 minutes to get my card and receipt to sign and leave. should not have paid, should have sent the caca burrito back, and left. won't be back to this hole for crappy food, crappy service and spend twice as much time waiting to pay as it did to look at the menu, order and eat. sad all the way around. they were not even busy, obviously treated like crap because of our race, could tell by the waiter who sat us and his piss poor attitude, should be fired and the waitress was just as lacking in her sense of service, do not see this place lasting much longer, word of mouth will get around and i will have absolutely nothing good to say about this place. all my students, and employees ask where are the good places to eat? i start by telling them where "not" to go... in closing i would like to say the place was gross dirty table, food on the floors, tripped over a broom as i was looking at desert case, and the back of the place looked like a garage sale chairs stacked and pushed around the back door, and the bar covered in plants. preparing for a weekend of diarrhea and nausea. read more

I've been there twice already, but I believe this will be my go to for mexican food. I really love the taste of their margaritas and tacos. Plus, the atmosphere is great. I feel like it's a family own, or at least it comes off that way to me. I like the set up. You just walk in and sit down. They come to you and ask what ya need. Super simple and no waiting around. The people work hard here. Food is good. I hope it gets more popular for them. Wonderful place. Also, the chips are the best chips I ever had. They're not stale like the other places I've been. Decent food -- a solid step above most so-called Mexican joints in this town. Usually a good sign when they greet you with tortilla chips made in-house -- that alone was enough to nudge me toward 4 stars when I was debating between 3 or 4 stars. When they told us to help ourselves to a table, the only one that wasn't blocked off for "social distancing" requirements and didn't need busing was seating for 8, which was overkill for our party of 3. Margaritas were a bit of a letdown. The lime margarita tasted like they use off-the-shelf margarita mix and mango margarita tasted like straight mango puree and little else.
