Everything I read seemed in line with what everyone else was saying. They were all really good things. The fact that Ben wasn't going to give a relaxing massage is exactly what I desired. Booking was super easy and I went yesterday. He was not what I expected. Though professional in his knowledge, he has a really great and shining personality. I can't wait to grow our rapport and get back to a healthy and functional me. The wisdom he shared regarding what triggers what and what needs to be released and adjusted where was really eye-opening to me. It all let me know that I've been really hard on my body for the past few years (especially since I don't remember the last time I even stretched)! but, what gave me great hope is that Ben has no doubt in his mind or expertise that I can get my body back where it needs to be. Maria did an outstanding job of working much of her time on my problem back, but also on other problem areas. My first visit was very good and my stabbing back no longer stabbing. I thought I'd go back for a second visit before I left town, and Maria said she had a slot open, so I went and now I'm hoping the loss of pain will hold off until I get back home, where I can see my regular massage therapist. I read some other reviews and there were complaints of the door being locked. I noticed that the ladies (Therapists) did not have a receptionist the times I visited and they lock the door because there is no one there to handle walk-ins. I am assuming the locking of the shop is for safety reasons when there is no receptionist on duty. I will return here the next time I'm in Houston. The place is clean, the prices more than reasonable ($75/hour, and Maria worked on me for 63 minutes, not the usual 45 at my place at home), and the people friendly and most important capable.

I've done this before so I know the score - I'll need someone to unknot my body-in-training after those long weekend runs in the fall and winter. In pursuit of a solution (using Massage Envy is a bit like playing Russian Roulette here) I started to "audition" massage therapists. I first looked for a convenient location near where I work in the Galleria Area and found that the first Google search result for "Houston massage" was Houston Massage by Sonya. I inferred from her website that at least she knew what she was talking about and scheduled an appointment via her online tool. I was more than pleased when, two days later, she got her hands on me. In the big scheme of things for a 53-year-old, I'm in pretty good shape, but she immediately sensed and understood where my trouble areas were (a minor misalignment of the pelvic girdle and somewhat shortened deltoids) and modified her approach accordingly. The massage was simultaneously effective and pleasurable, a result that more often than not does not occur when the therapist is working with deep tissue. They specialize in neuromuscular massage, so don't expect a spa-like experience with the usual Swedish massage. It starts off with a simple massage table in the office which is decorated with sports memorabilia. You keep your clothes on, a bedsheet is draped, and then he works on you through the bedsheet to your muscles. But like a spa, there's relaxing music playing (through a CD player!), and I usually end up dozing off at some point because the massage feels so nice. Afterwards, I always feel relieved of my tightness-- so good! John is obviously very good at what he does, understands anatomy, and accommodates to preferences (pressure, focusing on specific areas, etc). His clients range from well conditioned high school athletes (and of course Carl Lewis) who come for performance and recovery, to "normal" people like me with a bit of stiffness, to others with chronic pain or problem spots. He is also a really friendly man with an old soul and a good heart. MT and I have told so many friends about him and some have become regulars. His other team members also offer the same neuromuscular massages, and his wife, Ellen, offers physical therapy too. And if you're lucky, you might meet the pet bird, Dexter! He's a sweetie :) You can choose sessions from 30 min to 2 hours long. Definitely pricey-- 1 hour for $110, but it's definitely worth the money (health is wealth!). I wanted to keep Massage Therapy a secret but they deserve the love and 5 star rating over and over. They're located in a professional office building with ample parking, so definitely give them a try if you're looking to relieve your tightness or pain !
