First Power (hot) Yoga of 2024
Edelyn C.

Love, love, love this place! It's kept very clean and the staff is super welcoming. I've attended a variety of classes with different instructors and I've enjoyed every single class for its own uniqueness. The facility is super clean and on the 2nd floor of the building. I would highly recommend everyone to give hot, warm, really warm yoga to detoxify your skin and challenge your body for 2024!

Welcome sign for us newcomers!

We took the Restore Yoga class with Zevi and it was absolutely amazing! I'm a runner and have been having s problems with my knees over the past few years, and of all the yoga classes I've tried out, this was the most beneficial. My knees were hurting when I walked into class, but relief came tumbling in as soon as class began. I woke up this morning (the day after class) feeling incredible!! The Restore class focuses on deep stretches using blocks, pillows and straps. Zevi disclosed that he's a nurse by profession and that he's a "nerd" when it comes to the body and how it functions, which gave me confidence that he would lead us in the right direction. Sure enough, he did! This was definitely a very beginner-friendly class and we felt welcomed from start to end. While my boyfriend (who attended with me) and I aren't new to yoga, we were new to a few of Zevi's techniques and found them to be very effective and practical. Thanks for an awesome first class! We will definitely be back in the future.

This class is so relaxing.

The yoga instructor was charismatic, welcoming, and made the class enjoyable for first-timers. The only downside was how crowded the class was. Mats were basically side by side with little to no space in between people, so you definitely have to be comfortable sharing personal space. Aside from that, the energy and instruction were great.

I enjoy going to Black Swan--not only for the affordability but also because they often run monthly specials, which I always take advantage of. Parking can be a pain if you're going during busy times (after work), but the classes I take around 1pm, or even 4ish, I can ALWAYS find parking on the street. I try to get there 10 minutes before for space and a spot in the yoga room. The White Oak location has a small room that can fit about 60+ people. It can get a bit cramped, and you're definitely up close and personal with your neighbor, but honestly, it doesn't bother me anymore. I enjoy the classes and the community! I especially love taking classes from Jose--he's hilarious and makes every session such a blast. His classes are not only fun but also an incredible workout! Definitely check them out!

We wanted to continue this once we returned to Houston, but we didn't want to find a studio with 30+ students and the Pilates classes at our current gym didn't give us any feedback on whether we were doing the positions/moves correctly. We turned to yelp for help :) We were looking for the following in a studio to supplement our gym membership: 1) small classes 2) personal attention 3) encouraging and attentive teachers This studio has all 3 of these things, but it's not limited to Pilates! They have yoga and cycling classes that meet the above three requirements too! We've only been members since October, but we look forward to our weekly classes. What's really nice is the class feels tailored to us. My husband and I have different bodies (height, strength, flexibility, etc), and the teachers really adapt to us! They'll change certain routines to ensure each student is getting the most of the session. It's a great personalized experience, and your body will thank you. I've already noticed better posture and just awareness of how I hold myself when doing everyday things at home or at work. What a neat find - thank you, yelpers!

The drop-in rate is a suggested donation of $10 to $20, and yoga mats are available for a $5 rental. Black Swan also offers monthly and annual memberships. Colorful lights and music throughout the space created a pleasant atmosphere for our practice. They also have clean lockers and restrooms, including showers. Free lockers are available to secure your belongings during class, too. This morning's class was taught by Eugenia Davis, who was warm with a bright smile. When I go to this location, I park in the parking garage or parallel to the empty lot across the street on Fannin, where street parking is free. Then I went rock climbing with some of my friends who are yoga teachers. And they climbed those rocks like monkeys. Me? You could say I was more of an elephant trying to clamber up a steep hill. I made a resolution to do more yoga. Robert Boustany developed the Pralaya Yoga System to help develop maximum functional strength. The instructors excel at isolating the parts of the body that require most attention and working through exercises with you to strengthen them. The studio is one room, usually flooded with soft natural light. It's in the Montrose area, serene and beautiful for practice. The instructor made me feel at ease. Unlike other yoga studios where you start to feel like it's a fashion and flexibility competition, Pralaya makes you feel like you are there for your body and mind. And isn't that what yoga is all about? The instructors don't take themselves too seriously, and there are moments when you have to just laugh at frustration about the challenge- in a good way. I won't divulge the powerful secrets of Pralaya yoga, but after my first and second classes quietly and resolutely kicked my a$$, i lay on the ground in savasana and felt restored. My back felt happier, my mind felt peace. Even my fingers and toes felt like they were smiling. FYI- This isn't your typical vinyasa or hatha class. Expect to work hard on strength training and flexibility in muscles you didn't even know you had.

If you want a typical yoga studio/community, this is not it. The class I took a few months ago was with Robert Boustany and he rubbed me the wrong way, with his constant talk about his time with monks in the Himalayas and singling me out during the class. It's also delivered as a hybrid class, which means that there are laptops set up in front of him as he teaches, which took me out of the moment. The people were definitely friendly though.
