This is a cozy small place but somewhat spacious enough to accommodate a group of 6 people. Very good warm baguette is served complimentary (refilled as well after they are ready from oven!). Portions are good (=big), even the side orders! Calamari and baked goat cheese toast were very good. Pasta with clams, escargot (not typical as you can choose the sauce) were good as well. Sangria was really good but not much alcoholic as we weren't buzzed at all after sharing the pitcher (=3-4 half glasses for each person). Get the chocolate cake (wait for 15 min) as this was the best chocolate cake I've had and I don't like chocolate cake. Overall, very good restaurant, attentive service and good ambiance. We decided to give this restaurant a second chance after a terrible first experience ..... and were happy we did. The owner came out to say hi to us and thanking us for coming back despite the past visit (thanks again for everything Derek). It was the same waitress but this time she was very sweet, served us quickly, and paid attention to us whenever we needed anything. I'll also assume the service is better when the restaurant isn't as full though because she seemed a lot less distracted compared to last time. The food was delicious, definately the tuna tataki to be recommended as well as their pastas. Warm ambiance with a mixed older crowd.. Oh did I ever enjoy myself! As soon as I walked in I felt like I was at the Old Port which surprised me for the location (in a strip mall far from downtown) Got a seat at the bar and was impressed that although the place is not huge and was completely packed- it was not cramped in the least. I did see a few people try to get in before us but had no reso so they couldn't. It was full and I've heard it's like this every night- so make a reservation! They have a nice range of entrees (we had spicy peanut dumplings) although it was a tough choice between that and the beef carpaccio! And I felt the rest of the menu- including the table d'hôte, offered something for everyone. I had the Waldorf salad (my 1st) which was refreshing and the filet mignon that almost melted in my mouth! Top that with a nice selection at the bar (although I always order a Crown- and they had it) I was really happy with my meal. Ambiance wise- great music- everyone was having a great time, not too loud. A few people even started dancing at one point and it didn't bother anyone including staff. Nice atmosphere, well decorated. Seemed a bit on the loud side when fully packed but still able to carry on a conversation. they started things off right with fresh warm bread and butter. service was a bit slow but again it was packed. We ordered the peanut dumplings as a starter. It was a good mixture of sweet and spicy with a nice peanuty taste. after that we order the tortellini with prosciutto and mushrooms. The tortellini seemed pasty and store bought. the prosciutto made the cream sauce a bit to salty and seem to lack that rich creamy taste . as for the mushrooms just seemed lost in the dish. over all still a good dish it just missed the mark. Dish two was a Vegetarian stir fry with added shrimp. Well cooked a bit of lemon grass would have been a nice touch as the ginger that was a mention ingredient seemed absent. and had a bit too much soy for my taste. still over all a good dish. read more

The couple who run this amazing restaurant are two of the nicest people on the planet. The food is constantly changing depending on the season. The ambiance outside (a tiny strip mall) belies the warm and chic atmosphere within. Reservations are a must as this tiny perfect little piece of heaven is busy! read more

Terrible service. Had to ask for menus and bread. Reservation was at 8pm got the appetizers at 10pm!!! Main course is still not served and its 10:30!!! I wish I could rate -5 stars!! Never coming back. They didn't even check on us once if everything was ok or if we needed anything meanwhile we waited!! Garbage place. It was a terrible place to celebrate someone's birthday. (Order punched in at 9:15 not because we were late as were were all seated at 8:15, but because the waitress never came around!! If you are travelling from the Montreal airport to Ottawa, this is a great place to stop to have a nice meal. This place is more French than Italian, but the food is great. Escargots come in three different varieties. We had them with mushrooms, and it was delicious. Liver mousse was quite good, although it was served refrigerator-cold, and I am petty sure it would be better if it was served at almost room temperature. Cheesecake was really flavorful without being too sugary. Coffee was very good too. The menu is pretty extensive, and if everything else there is as good as what we had, then this place is a very easy choice. read more

The restaurant is in a shopping strip and looks unpretentious. Upon entering the restaurent, the decor and lighting felt very welcoming. It's the kind of place where you leave your stress behind. There is a good selection of music which doesn't scream at you. Our waitress was very attentive to our needs and the timing to serve each platter was well spaced out. Even though the place was busy we never felt rushed. The food and food selection, exquisite. The salmon salad was delicious. Each of us had different selections and we were very happy with our choices. You cannot leave Le Balneo without trying one of their incredible desserts! Even the bathrooms are nicely decorated and very clean. I would definitely recommend Le Balneo to all. read more

Terrible service. Called to resolve an issue and the Manager yelled at me and hung up in my face. I bought a coupon from here and they didn;t even serve me food! Not impressed. Now they have my money and will not serve me. Pathetic! read more

I don't even know where to begin. We decided to try Balneo for a family dinner and within the first few minutes, we just had a feeling that things were headed downhill. We were seated in the corner of the restaurant, beside the window, perfectly aligned with the ceiling vent which released a steady breeze of cool air. If this was the summer, it might have been pleasant but being mid-February, we were frozen. They did nothing to correct this. We ordered our dinner and two plates came out incorrectly. Two of us ordered the Smoked Salmon Linguine and were brought a salmon plate and a smoked salmon penne. When we explained that it wasn't what we ordered, the waitress tried to get us to take the plates because "they were really good". I particularly didn't really care too much if I had the penne or Linguine (I was starving) so I took the penne pasta plate. My mother, who loves linguine, asked for the plate that she ordered. 15 minutes later, a plate arrived. Smoked Salmon Penne. We were confused. They informed us that it had something to do with the fact that, because we had ordered from the Table D'Hote menu, we were not eligible for the linguine (strange?) - only the penne. The waitress acknowledged that we did order linguine but said the chef told her that it was not possible. We were frustrated. Our frustrations started to heighten when were then told that the kitchen had just closed (it was 9PM) and there was nothing more we could order. We returned the penne and advised them once again that it wasn't what we ordered and would just like to have the bill so we could leave. We were of course charged for the meal which we didn't order and returned. By now the patrons beside our table added to this "fine dining" experience by managing to find a suitable place for the f-word in every sentence. They were loud and abrasive yet the waitress, and owner of the restaurant walked by them several times without even an acknowledgement of their behaviour. When we respectfully asked our waitress to remove the plate that we returned from the bill, the owner got involved and put the icing on the cake. She told my mother in a loud aggressive manner that she "was ridiculous and had something wrong with head" for returning the plates that she did not order, that "there are people starving all around the world and that pasta is pasta - it doesn't matter if it's penne or linguine". These types of comments continued in a loud aggressive manner while she refused to remove the $17 dollars from our bill. Finally she told us that "fine, I'm removing this from your waitresses pay so I hope you feel disgusted with yourselves". My mother was completely embarrassed and we left feeling terrible at the situation. We were polite, calm, quiet and respectful during the entire exchange yet this women felt the need to raise her voice, point her finger and ridicule my mother for something so simple as getting an order correct - and as we explained to them, if the linguine was not an option on the table d'hote, simply tell us and we would have dropped the table d'hote and ordered it from the menu, very simple - they shouldn't have made the decision for us and brought out something that we didn't order. Anyways, I can go on but the point is, the owner's attitude towards her clients was so off that I wouldn't be surprised if we see this restaurant close down. There is no way you can last in that business with terrible customer service. It was truly awful and the worst dining experience we've ever had. read more

First time to la Balneo started out okay, staff was very nice and friendly throughout. But when my large salad came, I could not be more disappointed. With all of the wonderful restos in and around Montreal, this was a total let down. Dressing was "Meh" the few orange segments were watery and tasteless. The whole thing was bland. No pizzazz, anybody could whip up something better at home. I ate perhaps 5 bites at most, and thought to just take the rest home and jazz it up myself. I must have left the resto for 5 minutes when I realized I had forgotten the full salad and ran back in. They had thrown it out already, which sucked as it was the large salad barely touched. I get it, they want to clean up. But rather than feel badly at all, try to offer me a certificate or an apology, or a coupon to come back and enjoy, maybe bring some friends...or take if off my bill (something - anything - anybody with and ounce of common sense would do) the OWNER of the resto pulled out a bunch of crap from the GARBAGE that was over the salad, and tried to convinvce me to take it home to eat. The salad from the garbage. To add insult to injury, she proceeded to scold and yell at me that it was not her problem, and she can't keep everybody's food. When I told the party I was with (who had been there before) what had just happened...they were not surprised at her attitude, to put it nicely, Will definitely NOT be giving any more money there.
