Our family stopped by this restaurant for a quick and inexpensive meal after a walk in Quebec. The prices where definitely very reasonable; 4.95 (Canadian dollars) for each entrée. Service was great. I was not a big fan of the dark and boisterous atmosphere, however once you stay in the restaurant for a while you get used to it. We each ordered an entrée: mushroom burger, chicken quesadilla, barbecue wings, and chicken tacos. It was a good serving size for a great price! The taste, however was mediocre. The tacos that I got were stale and sloppy, and the meat was dry and cold. They did serve a sauce on the side, however it wasn't enough to satisfy my taste. It also took quite a while for the food to get to the table. The rest of the food that my family ordered was okay, the mushroom burger was probably the best. Our party of 4 had the Chicken Ceasar Wrap w/fries, two Calamari, and 3 The Works burgers w/fries, one with sweet potato fries. Very good especially for the price! $4.99 for each plus $1.99 to substitute the pepper fries with sweet potato. The pepper fries were a nice surprise! Very tasty! Based on food alone I would give this place 3 star. Food was decent, but nothing overwhelming. However when you receive the bill and realize that indeed all your meals were 4.95 each, my rating jumps to 4 stars. We had turkey club, quinoa and avocado salad, poutine and beef spaghetti. All decent servings sizes and appetizing meals. Some paces would charge double for the same food,same quality. This is a great stop if you want to get away from tourist overpricing and find yourself a decent salad for $5. Or if you like the greasy stuff, there is plenty of that! The only potential drawback, based on your age or comfort level, would be the ambience. Feels like a bar and while the younger crowd would enjoy, not sure your parents or little kids would be into it. We are in our mid 30's and definitely sensed our lack of coolness compared to our neighboring diners. Another consideration is the area. It's not the same as old Quebec City within its walls with tourist friendly ambience and safe streets. This resto is in a area more akin to queen st west in Toronto. Gentrification in process. So lots of cool stops but if you are not familiar with area you may not want to be walking around late at night. It's only 20 min walk from old city, but you have to walk down a big hill or take a stairway. Again might not be suitable for some. read more

What a splendid place this was. Walking in I was greeted by a delightful lass; her ears gaged, her smile polite, her nose pierced and her long-sleeved and maroon and white skater-Esque shirt aflow. Needless to say, I was terrified. The beers and cocktails were inexpensive and the atmosphere--lively, to say the least. In fact, everything food-wise could be had for a mere $4.95! Even with small plates, you can't contend with that kind of value. Maybe that's why, even on a Sunday, the place bustled with life. The music was rapturous and the splendour and excitement of youth pushed its way up into the ceiling. This would not have been a problem except that, as a young boy, I once encountered an alternative looking boy on a skateboard who I attempted to move out of the way for on the sidewalk but stepped onto the street accidentally and a car honked at me and I shrieked involuntarily and I inadvertently peed a little into my new Costco shorts and the droplets showed didn't go away on time and, at the park, Tommy Favelview laughed at me for it and told me I was too old to be on the slide with peed pants. Other than that, I had a really good time at Bureau de Poste. It was worth the feeling of abject terror that's never left me since. read more

Very smart business model; since everything was only $5, we ordered more than we normally would, ordered drinks, and happily spent more than we'd normally spend on a meal to have a mini-feast. And, the bonus is that if funds were tight, we could have spent $5 each and still enjoyed a filling and tasty meal. They had nicely done English menus for those of us still learning French (or relying on high school French from over a decade ago). We did have to wait for a minute to sit down, however it was truly only a minute and we opted for two spots at the bar. The bartender was super nice and personable, so these seats were actually much more ideal for us than being isolated at a table. Food: we had the pierogies (loved them), beet & goat cheese salad (unexpectedly good), spaghetti bowl (very solid), and the Works (Le Constructeur) burger ("for the money, it was a very good burger"). My spaghetti sauce had braised beef which was delicious, and the burger came with the option of poutine for the side, which was decent. It's important to note that this is a bar-style establishment that offers food, not a cozy restaurant with a maître 'd, and that's the standard on which we rated our experience. Music playlist made us laugh; it ran the gamut from hard to soft and back again and seemed to stay in the late 90s to early 2000s. At one point, the bartender was singing along to 'N Sync as he poured drinks. I didn't use the ladies' room; the feedback I received on the men's room was that it was a bit rough. Totally worth the walk down all those hills (remember you have to walk UP afterwards) and the line at the door. There is a ridiculous little man who, unfortunately, ruins this place from behind the bar in the evening. We were staying at a hotel nearby and stepped out for a drink and this place looked busy so we checked it out. We sat at the bar and a perfectly cordial bartender got us our first two drinks, a beer and a Caesar (both of which were pretty good) and, after he upsold me to a double on the Caesar and added taxes (unlike all of the bars we'd been to, they added tax to drinks here; is it because it's a restaurant or just their choice to not fold the tax into the drink cost?), the round was around $20 so, after paying with a $20 bill, I needed to dig around in my wallet to find a couple of loonies for a tip (we don't do coins much for dollars in the US so I needed to make sure I found the right ones). After that, things got nutty. Once we were done with our first $22 round, the two bartenders refused to make eye contact with us. They served everyone around us and made a big, silly show about ignoring us. There seemed to be a bit of a Napoleon complex going on as the shorter, less friendly bartender seemed to be in charge and ordering his taller colleague not to serve us. So, was it because we didn't speak French? Or because we were outsiders in his sacred, Québécois-only establishment? Maybe it was ageism (it's a pretty young crowd in there)? Or, dare I say it, racism?! Perhaps he didn't like the caramel tone of my girlfriend's skin or my Spanish good looks? Could it be racism?! Well, after some ridiculous huffing, the guy finally decided to make us some drinks (which he made extra tiny and which, again, came out to around $20 for the round) and, when we handed over a $20 bill to pay, he told us it wasn't enough and accused us of not tipping for our first round, which is why they weren't serving us. Now, this guy is a terrible bartender and likely just a terrible person all-around. A sad, insecure little man. And these are clearly his moments to feel like he has some power in his life. He can keep people waiting for drinks. It's likely all that he has. But it's not good for this business to have this guy running the bar at night. Coming from NYC, we would have been happy to spend (and tip) way too much during our one night out in Quebec City. Instead, little Napoleon man decided to power trip and just made things weird. I don't know if his colleague was lying a bit and not pooling all of his tips or if some sketchy kid just grabbed the loonies we left on the bar (someone did grab something out of my jacket pocket so be a bit careful with your stuff in there at night) but the entire situation was just ridiculous. Thankfully, the manager we spoke with the next day was perfectly polite and apologetic and offered us a couple of free drinks to make up for it (we had to hit the road, but the gesture was appreciated). And maybe the place is great otherwise. Sound like it from some of these other reviews. But they really ought to consider relieving the little troll man they have running the bar at night of his job. Yaaaas finally we found a bar that wasn't touristy or full of old people! And man you'd be surprised how hard that is in Quebec! I wish this was ranked higher on Yelp because we never would have found it without a local guide. Fair enough, keep it authentic, right? If you've ever been to Barcelona you may recognize the concept (well, minus the self-service thing). Cheap pub food and crazy drinks! I got a pleasant buzz with a younger crowd (I'd say average age is 23 inside), and some yummy poutine and the vague smell of chlorine or bleach in the air, mixed with very heavy humidity of something or other. Such a place that I would visit over and over again if I lived in Quebec. The repurposing of a historic building like that, too, is also a commedable idea. Love it! read more

This place was very close to the place where we were staying at in Québec city. We stumbled upon it randomly while walking around and decided to stop in for lunch. It was quite crowded on a Tuesday afternoon. All items on the menu are $4.95 which is a great value but I would say the food is average at best. We ordered the garlic prawns for the appetizer...which was surprisingly really good. It was served without the shell...had tons of garlic, sprinkled with avocado and served with crusty toast. Both BF and I got their 'the works' burger...which you could choose a side of fries, soup, or salad. Fries were average. Soup was tomato soup...which came out lukewarm. We got a pale ale which was decent. Beer is actually more expensive at over $6 for a 20oz. Overall an average food experience but a really great value. We got to Quebec City at 11pm and most places that were "open" had already closed their kitchens. Their kitchen was open and ready for us. It was a fun loud place with 90s and 00s music videos playing on the tv screens. My food and mocktail was delicious. We were staying at a hotel nearby and this was the only place that had a kitchen still open after 9pm on a Sunday. The BBQ pizza and the noodles were both really good, and the donuts at the end were the best dessert since we've been here. We don't drink so the bill came out to $25 CAD which with the exchange rate is crazy cheap for all that. Plus there were younger people our age inside at the bar and our waitress was great. All the employees we interacted with there spoke English and there was also a menu in English at each table. The only negative thing I can think of was the crowd of crackheads smoking outside the patio but the brave hostess went out and convinced some of the more obnoxious ones to leave. I guess it's Industry Night on Mondays. This place is definitely a locals hangout and it was packed and kicking it. They had a decent beer selection and the entire menu is just $4.95 per plate! This being our last night in Quebec, we wanted to eat somewhere where the locals eat and we wanted it to be a memorable experience without breaking the bank feeding a family of four. Mission accomplished at the bureau de postage. Affordable beyond belief. The menu items were creative but maybe lacked just a little in execution. An example was my beef dip. It was a great idea using braised beef, but the sandwich lacked a wow factor. Of course, for five bucks, maybe I should lower my expectations. We were visiting Quebec for a couple days and figured it was fairly close we would take a walk down. The waitress was very polite and friendly but that was it. I ordered the works burger with fries and a beer. The beer was flat and no head, fries were cold Nd the burger was soso. My wife had mushroom burger and yam fries. Was soso....the best part was when my wife used the washroom and it was disgusting. It had shit on the handle and back of the toilet. Great food, great atmosphere, and unbeatable prices! Every food item on the menu is $4.95 from appetizers to entrees. Drinks are more expensive, but affordable with the cheap food! Went today with a friend for lunch after hearing many rave reviews about the place. For 4.95 for anything on the menu, we ordered two plates each to sample à few things, it's a nice business model and you can tell they make most of their business off alcohol. I ordered the constructeur burger plus à poutine as an entrée and both were excellent. The same meal at a different restaurant would have probably been at least double the price. The only down side was we found the music à bit loud, we had to speak up abit so the service could hear us. We will be returning though. read more

We went here on a Friday night for drinks and had a terrible experience. The drinks are over priced (it's pretty clear they make up for the cheap food with expensive drinks) and the service was horrendous. I've never encountered such awful bartenders.. They worked together to visibly ignore us when we tried to order a second drink. After about 30 minutes of this nonsense, they finally told us it was because we didn't tip for the first drink. This was a completely false accusation..we are from the US so tipping is second nature for us. Instead of considering any other possibility, the bartenders wrongfully accused us and decided to make our night miserable. Ridiculous! We come to Quebec from Las Vegas every so often, and every time we make it a point to stop by one of our favorite spots! There's a bit of a line coming in sometimes, but it's always definitely worth it. Service is incredibly prompt, even despite the crowd, and the food is always stellar! Love the atmosphere as well - always so lively and upbeat. When it came time to order dessert - we noticed a "Buy the chefs a beer!" option, and obviously took it. We were met with a round of applause and cheers from the kitchen, which was pretty fun. Overall, i'd have to wholeheartedly recommend this place for anyone! read more
