This review only touches upon my numerous delivery experiences with the restaurant. Le Gamin's delivery service blows me away - fast, relatively inexpensive for the quality of ingredients, and delicious. Their french fries are perfect, and the brie & onion baguette is a favorite as well. Everything was still warm upon getting to my apartment. Portions are perfectly sized. Delivery staff are professional and if there are any problems in preparing your order, the restaurant will call to sort it out before you're delivered something that you don't want. I really want to love Le Gamin, because the laid back French vibe and peaceful garden are right up my alley. But the last meal I had there made it impossible to love this neighborhood spot because the food was simply mediocre to poor. The biggest offender was the hanger steak, which my friend ordered. It tasted like a cross between old mutton and a shoe. It was also rolled into a strange, rope like piece of meat (isn't a hanger steak usually flat?). Oddly enough, the menu claimed that the steak was grass fed. My friend had a total of two bites. At least the fries that came along with the meal were fresh and tasty. I had their fish special -- forget what fish it was, but at least that was cooked well. It was served with risotto that was incredibly bland and mushy. I must have been sitting in a pot stewing all day. We also shared a salad, which was fine. Go to Le Gamin for the chill vibe, skip the meals. read more

The food here is great. I gave it 4/5 stars because the waitress this past weekend greeted my family with a look on her face like this x-( and said "is he/she sleeping?" When we said yes, she told us "then that's ok" for us to take a seat. Huh. Thanks. Like France, rude people but good food. My family and I have been to Le Gamin twice for dinner only. The atmosphere is cozy, nice music selection & love the decor. The friendly staff make for an enjoyable dining experience. My son and I are vegetarians so I must say that the selection for us was limited but we were able to make do. The french onion soup smelled amazing. Too bad no one can make a decent vegetarian version. The beet soup was okay. Not the consistency that I expected. The quiche was perfect and a pretty large portion. The wine selection is nice and priced reasonably for both red and white. The creme brulee was amazing! This is defiantly a place I would recommend to someone who is not a vegetarian. For a non vegetarian you can't go wrong... lot's for you to choose from. I'm sure I will go back because it was an enjoyable dining experience for us all. read more

My problem was the service. And I looked through the reviews before I posted this one, it's a problem. You go to brunch on a nice sunny day off from work, you don't expect the service to kill your mood. I get there, and I start to the back where my friends are. The waitress tells me that there are no seats left in the back. I explain that I'm meeting friends. When I go through the kitchen to get to the back. I see that there are extra tables.... okay. I sit down with friends I haven't seen in a long time and order tea with lots of honey. I have a sore throat. It shows up without the honey. I ask for the honey again. She brings another table who sat down and ordered after me their coffee and creamers, so I know the only way I can get honey before the tea turns tepid is to go to the kitchen and get it myself. read more

Went to Le Gamin for dinner on a Saturday night with a party of six around 6:30pm. There was plenty of seating available. The venue was great for us because we didn't want to be dining in a loud busy restaurant. It was one of those "let's relax and chill out" type of moods. This restaurant is NOT BYOB like the greenpoint location. I wish it was though ... We had the meat and cheese platter and escargots as the appetizers. I really like the escargots (they were big and juicy!) and the cheese platter (they gave a lot of cheese). The meat platter didn't wow me as there wasn't much of some of the meats to go around for 6 people. I had the salmon which was flavorful and filling. Definitely liked my dish than the crepe dishes. I had some of my boyfriend's crepe (ratatouille, egg, and caramelized onions) and was a bit disappointed in it. We had the chocolate mousse to share with the 6 of us. What was funny was that only the females ordered it but the guys ended up devouring it. Overall, it was a good experience at Le Gamin. Charming little spot, with a server who was accommodating towards my rambunctious toddler. There were no other guests there, so Mr. Learning To Walk played more than he would normally be allowed in a cafe (although we ultimately left the place essentially in the condition that we found it). Do not miss out on the fresh squeezed orange juice - comes in 2 sizes but I regret getting the small it was that good! Iced coffee was ok. Eggs florentine was perfectly cooked. Came here in July and forgot to write a review sooner. There's an adorable backyard patio like 99.9% of the bars/restaurants in Greenpoint and a decent amount of tables inside. The food was excellent, and our waitress recommended a really nice bottle of wine to go with our meal. I used to live in Greenpoint and this was my spot to eat! Very fresh and delicious French food! I tried my first escargot and pâté at Le Gamin and it had me hooked! My favorite dish here is the steak, so juicy and cooked perfectly. The staff here is really warm and friendly. They are also very helpful when it comes to answering any questions you might have about the menu. If you're thinking of a cute spot for a Prix Fixe dinner for NYE make a reservation here! Was not overly impressed--particularly for the price. There are much better French restaurants in North Brooklyn. Just an FYI, THIS PLACE IS NO LONGER BYOB. I don't hold this against the restaurant at all, but I think it should be noted since the former policy is mentioned on so many reviews here. The french onion soup was ok, but kinda sweet. My entree was a tiny 'chicken pot pie' that ran about $19 and was literally doused in salt--so much so that a few bites had that 'burny' saltiness. The creme brulee was weak--it tasted like Jello pudding with a torched top. Service was spotty at best. In addition, the waiter kept running in and out the front door which brought in really cold drafts. Everyone including us, and both tables next to us had to wait a really long time to get the waiters attention to get the check. We're talking well, after we'd finished dessert. The decor of the place was okay, but seemed a little lazy by NY standards. For instance, photos and miniature French posters were hanging in the bathroom that were clearly printed on copier paper from an ink jet printer. Just sayin'.... My girlfriend's duck was pretty good, I'd probably recommend that. All in all, dinner for two with tip was over $100--I just felt like there's better executed options out there in that range. read more

Came here for brunch. I ordered the french onion soup and croque monsiuer (yep, lots of cheese, people) and my husband ordered the Ratatouille. He said that his was good but the goat cheese hash brown was weird and under cooked. The french onion soup was sweet like other reviewers have said. But there was no savory aspect to it. It was just bland gruyere cheese and a small piece of bread with LOTS of onion, and not much broth. If you LOVE onions, get it. I also found that there was a TON of cheese contradictory to another poster. The croque monsiuer is a crowd pleaser. It's cheesy crispy top, sweet ham, and ooey gooey center makes for a PERFECT dish. I've had it twice now and it tasted the same. If you want something tasty, get this dish. Sure, it may not be the craziest thing on the menu, but it's a French staple. I've been here several times for brunch and enjoyed each meal immensely. When I was with a group of 7, 4 out of 7 orders were wrong, but all were delicious when they were eventually straightened out. To be fair, there were two other large parties there at the same time and I can imagine the kitchen was slammed. The waitress was very sweet and responsive, but clearly handling a lot at once which left us alternately with one too few and one too many bowls of coffee. Yep, delicious large French bowls of coffee - soymilk option available. The eggs were light, fluffy and cooked just as requested each time I've had them. The potatoes were perfect and the salad was pretty standard. When I returned with small groups of people, the service was spot on and fairly quick, even when I was a latecomer to a party of three who had already ordered. Le Gamin is a small French spot tucked away in Greenpoint with French home cooking on the menu. This is a pretty nice place. Most dishes range from $9 to $14, exceeding that range are a few dinner entrees and specials at upwards of $20. Overall, I really enjoy Le Gamin, but I've made an observation about there menu: there's a lot of stuff on it. I've come to think that a lot of their daily specials are amazing, particular their dinner entrees like a cassoulet with sausage, duck and chicken. Some other notable dishes are one of the best French onion soups in NYC, a surprisingly sweet baguette with caramelized onions and brie; and a goat cheese pastry served with a mustard-dressed salad. One thing that I was a little disappointed at Le Gamin: the sausages. They have a wide variety of specialty sausage dishes, but they all seem to be underwhelming. At first, I was excited to try them but each time I get a new one it seems small, soft with no snap and somewhat bland in flavor. The only one I was pleased with was the one submerged in my cassoulet along with its cousins. Really though, the sausages were more of a disappointment in my mind than a huge downside, since the menu has so much more to offer. The terrines and salads are really good and it seems like no matter where your appetite lies you'll find something to satisfy it. Regardless of what I order here I always get the French onion soup with it and I'll plan a visit if the cassoulet is on the menu. read more

From the Upper West Side I took the C train to the F train to the L train to the Bedford stop in Willamsburg and then walked a mile in the rain and wind on the night before Thanksgiving with a 4, 2, and 1-year-old and a hungry wife just to eat here. The place is so nice and in a cool, nice, and calm part of town (Green Point) just a mile north of Williamsburg and just blocks from the India Point ferry stop.
