A really cool restaurant that takes shape of an old diner cart, with a bar inside and surprising amounts of seating. Diner has been around for quite some time and it has a lot of charm. The servers come directly to your table and they write down the menu for the day. The menu generally run American classics, but a bit more "chefy" than a run of the mill diner. Unfortunately, I think I came on an off day, as there were some miscues. The clam dish had a ton of potential, but was noticeably overseasoned, and I'm a self-proclaimed salt lover. It was mentioned that the pork chop was going to be medium to medium-rare, but what we received was in the edge of well done (and even burned on some ends). The burger and fries, though, were fantastic. A bit hit or miss, but I do want to come back as the menu is creative and I'm sure it would have been great on a better day. read more

A New York institution. I first came here about 15 years ago, and I'm happy to see that not much has changed. I remember dinner being exceptional back then, but this visit was for brunch. The food was very good, and the service was excellent. That said, I remember being even more impressed by the dinner menu years ago, so perhaps a return visit in the evening will earn that fifth star. Either way, it's great to see this New York classic still delivering after all these years. read more

The Caesar salad was a knockout as was the burger. With the passage of time I can't recall the particulars of the Fitzcarraldo but I liked it. It was priced like one might expect in an ironically named Brooklyn venue but they were generous with the good stuff. Even the bread was impressive. So this isn't my usual spot but I'm glad that more highbrow out-of-town friends chose it. The absence of a formal menu in favor of the server writing down the day's option may be a gimmick, but after a few bites I was swayed. We came here based on a recommendation from a friend who said the servers are super kind and knowledgeable. They were right, the service was incredible. There is a lot left to be desired about the food. We ordered a burger and it came out almost raw. The fries were burnt, and way too salty. The train car ambiance is fun for a quick drink at the bar but not quite the place you'd like to go for dinner or a date. Cozy interior, but the concept seemed like...trying too hard to be different and hip...? Why do you make your waiters write down the menu on the table for each group of guests? Doesnt even save paper since those menus are not reused. And honestly, our waiter's handwriting was sometimes hard to read. Also, quite pricey. The crab pasta was $35, the celery root was also $35 (like what?!), the squash was $23, and the Caesar salad (not pictured) was $22. One of the most memorable dinners I have had in Williamsburg, thanks to both the food and the incredible service. Our waiter Benjamin set the tone right away. He came to the table, unrolled white paper, and literally wrote out the menu for us, walking us through every dish with so much detail and enthusiasm. It felt personal, special, and set the stage for the meal to come. We started with the crudo, which was absolutely out of this world. Fresh, bright, and paired with the most insane garlicky dip in a little ramekin that we shamelessly saved to dunk bread into after. Next up, the Caesar salad. They called it "robust" and they were not lying. As a Caesar purist, I can confidently say the anchovy dressing was perfection. The sweet corn risotto was probably my least favorite. I expected it to be a little "cornier" (ha) and thicker in texture, but everything else more than made up for it. The brick chicken was a showstopper. However they flatten and crisp that bird, they brick the hell out of it and lock in every bit of flavor into the skin. Absolutely unreal. And dessert. I did not know ice cream could be this sinful. The Wendy's Ice Cream Sundae was unreal. Chocolate, cherries, bordeaux. It was decadent, nostalgic, and had me literally drooling at the table. If you want a dining experience that is both elevated and full of character, Diner is it. Benjamin made the night, the food blew us away, and I am already planning my return. read more

Went for dinner on a Sunday evening and we were able to get a reservation very easily. The restaurant was steadily busy, but not jammed during our visit. The atmosphere is cozy and casual, the music is fun, and the staff seem to enjoy working at Diner. All of which makes this an enjoyable spot. Then there's the food! We shared a Caesar Salad, had a cheeseburger and a pork shoulder over beans and rice for entrees, and finished with sorbet and a cobbler. Everything we ordered was excellent. With the feel and flavors of having been home-cooked just for us. The menu is a little limited, and its best to be in a mindset to trust and take advantage of the kitchen's creativity and expertise. Service is trash. We have been sitting for forty five minutes after ordering and still have not received any food. After telling us that half of the menu is unavailable, the server clearly forgot to put our order in because everyone that was seated after us has been served. The server tried to charge us $20 for a side of bacon and has not offered to reimburse us for the extra time waiting for our food to arrive. Overall, very disappointed with my experience here. What an amazing culinary experience! Every dish that we had was absolutely stunning. For appetizers, we had the beet salad and the country pâté with sourdough, as well as the lamb sausage. For entrées, we had the pork, cheeseburger, and half chicken. For the side dish, we had a polenta with wild mushrooms. Everything was absolutely sublime and cooked to perfection. Came here for dinner with my friends and I go the catalan fish dish. It had black sea bass in it and monkfish along with potatoes. It was super delicious and great for a cold night. The broth is a white broth but very unique. All the fish was cooked perfectly. We sat outside in the heated dining. Only minus is the table on the otherwise kept the door open making it a bit cold for half the dinner. Plus was they gave you warming blankets which was definitely a nice touch on top of the heaters. This was on my list of places to try and finally gave it a go. Overall it was okay but probably missed the mark on my expectations based on other reviews and from what I'd heard of the place. The place is really cute essentially set up like an old school diner with an elevated feel. The service was good throughout the night. Might just be me but I wasn't a huge fan of writing the menu down on the table. Its totally playful and not a big nit but just didn't see the point. Also, the menu is written as the server faces you so essentially it's sideways as you read it. Plus, in a small & loud place it's hard to hear the server anyway as they talk through the items. Food Ordered the burger. One w salad and the other w fries. Burgers were really good. Cooked to order and the sides were both clean. The fries were awesome. Ordered the Caesar salad and I really enjoyed it. Loaded with flavors and liked the larger romaine lettuce style. Two small nits- slightly over dressed and it was a bit too forward on anchovy. Ordered the shisito peppers and I liked this dish as well. Lightly battered and fried and the white sauce was a nice cool contrast. Ordered the lamb steak and this was a big miss. A bit too dry and the dish overall was just underwhelming. The eggplant purée essentially looked like a grayish paste. Felt bad for the person that ordered it at our table. I tried it so I could weigh in on it. Drinks Ordered the chilled Pinot noir on the recommendation of the server and it was horrible. Basically a homemade grape juice. I accept fault for ordering a chilled red. I always make that mistake but the overall wine itself, which apparently is made exclusively for the restaurant, just fell flat. So very into Diner these days. This is one of the older restaurants in Williamsburg but it is so fresh and cutting edge. They have a new weekly, seasonal menu which the server goes through with you by writing it out on the paper table cloth. For a place that is nautical theme (i.e. the inside of the restaurant is a boat), I thought the menu would be heavily seafood but thankfully it was not. FOOD - We tried to many things here, but my fave was the pork chop ($42) followed by the chicken ($36). The plates are ideal for sharing so bring a group. DRINKS - Cocktails and wines, all about $15. What a find in South Williamsberg. A converted antique railcar diner. I can not say enough about the staff from the front of the house to servers and waiters. We had the Caesar salad, stracciatella, swordfish, and the classic cheeseburger. Everything was delicious and well prepared. I asked for a rare, and it was perfectly cooked. Loved the detail of the waiter writing out the menu on the table for us and giving us great recommendations. Because they source different local ingredients based on what is available, causing the menu to shift frequently while also having some core staples like the burger. It was explained that beef and bread are sourced under the supervision of management. It's easy to access from NYC. I took the East-River NYC ferry to South Williamsberg. Also easily accessible by subway, via Brooklyn L or M. I love this place. It's on my list of stops while in NYC. read more
