GORGE WORTHY FOOD, FRIENDLY SERVER AND NICE SEATING! We were in the old city when we found this gem. We saw outside seating and went right inside to enjoy the brunch on perfect day. The ambiance was very soothing and the place itself has palatable french cafe feel to it. The outside tables had little slow service compared to the inside table but once we were attended, the waitress was very quick and friendly. We like the place so much that we went again for the dinner. The pricings were little on teh higher side but totally worth it. On food itself, for the brunch on weekends they had different menu to choose from. We opted for Le paris brest sale & Trout gravlax. Both of our dishes were served with side salad and a shot of smoothie which was a unique experience in itself. The beet root and sprouts salad was very refreshing a and berry smoothie was okay-ish. 1. Le paris brest sale - The pastry itself was very flaky and full of flavors from chesse and mushroom was giving the dish a well deserved earthy flavor and the topping sauce was the actual punch of the dish. I loved it. 2. Trout gravlax - This was another well thought of dish. The trout and lemon cream sauce go toghter very well and ofcorse all the sourness is balanced by adding the poached egg on top. 3. Beet Root Salad: This teh one dish that I brough back with me in form of recipe. It was perfect for summery hot night. The beets are fresh, the argula have the slightly punched flavor, blueberry for sweetness and the dressing (maple syrup, apple cider vinegar, olive oil, black pepper and salt and lemon) was the hit ingredient of the dish. I loved it so much that I had to ask for the recipe and they were kind enough to share that :) 4. Duck Roast: This was the dish that tempted my husband to go to this place again for dinner. He was super impressed with his duck. It was cooked perfectly, the gravy was to die for. Every component in the dish was going along very well. The wine that was suggested by the waiter paired really good with the duck. 5. Maple Creme Brulle: OMG! what a mouth watering dessert it was! A must try! My friends and I really enjoyed the well decorated interior design- it was dim, warm, and aesthetically pleasing. The food is good, but I think the food is a bit more expensive than it's true value. My friends and I ordered the cheese & charcuterie, steak & fries, and sea scallops. The line was short when we arrived, but became quite long once dinner peak time arrived. Great french food without the great expense and fuss. We ate at Le Hobbit summer of 2014, Quebec was in the middle of a Summer Heat Advisory. Coming from Texas, we laughed at the 85 degree high temp advisory, but it was real. Le Hobbit has no A/C and the interior of the restaurant was humid and hot. But the food was all perfect. My son LOVES Steak Tartare and theirs was exactly how it should be. Decent portion too. We sampled local cheeses and even tried a red wine from the region that was pretty good. I ended up at Le Hobbit on a bitterly cold, blustery Friday afternoon after what felt like a very long journey from my yoga class back to my hotel. Have you ever seen the classic Campbell's soup commercial where the snowman sits down in front of a bowl of soup then begins to melt into a smiling young boy? Picture that. With a perfect omelette. And beer. First - the servers at Le Hobbit were terrific - we muddled through as I tried to use my French and they tried to use their English. None of us were speaking very properly but happily, we all understood one another. Good enough for me! It was around 2:15 by now (because I got lost trying to find the Escalier Faubourg) but I was still craving petit dejeuner so I went with l'omelette delicieuse - tomato, mushrooms, lardons and goat cheese. It was served with fresh fruit and a pile of lovely, silver dollar sized potato pancakes. The baguette was grilled and buttered and although I rarely eat bread these days, I couldn't resist the perfect slices of gluteny goodness. I washed down my brunch with a (large) Cheval Blanc and finished off with a cup of tea (which they comped). I really enjoyed the vibe of Le Hobbit but it can be a little confusing. The servers wear ties and the bar looks quite chic but the food, atmosphere and prices are blissfully casual. This is a truly comfortable, welcoming spot - especially on a cold day. I feel like I'm the Eye of Sauron spreading negativity among the Shire... haha sadly I wasn't too impressed by this restaurant. I DID like the cheese and charcuterie platter and the french onion soup. Even though the cheese selection in the platter is pretty generic e.g. brie, blue cheese, and this cheddar-like one (people really liked that one!), my fave part (as a non-cheese eater) was this fabulous smoked bacon that somehow retained all of the smokey flavor! They also included some jams and tiny cornichons on the side, always a win! The french onion soup was SO lovely - rich onion flavor, not too salty, and the cheese was not overpowering, the bread just soggy enough. We were NOT fans of: - the super SUPER cheesy duck cannelloni (Cannelloni de canard confit, fondant de Douanier et buisson de roquette citronnée) & that's not just me being anti-cheese -- everyone agreed the cheese was too overpowering. - the seafood risotto (Risotto façon paëlla Crevettes, calmars, pétoncles, chorizo, safran et bisque de crustacés) It was undercooked on top - the risotto rice was chewy & grainy. We thought about sending it back, but the servers were way too busy by then. - the Duck Duo (Duo de canard Magret poêlé mariné au soya et érable, cromesquis de canard confit en croûte de pistaches et chutney d'abricots au vinaigre de cidre). I liked the pistachio crust in the Duck Duo , but the chutney was way too sour! The duck breast was also inconsistently cooked - tough & overcooked in some parts, raw and chewy in others. - the beef tartare (Tartare de boeuf Chorizo, basilic, parmesan et réduction de balsamique) No home run here, but nothing terrible either. It came with homemade or shoestring fries, but the ketchup came so late into the meal that we were all too full. The plain arugula salad on the side was much welcomed to counterbalance the heavy meal. The wine menu is rather non-intuitive and confusing until you realize that the grayscale of the bottle name font matched their headings. Service was decent until it got busy around 7PM. The two servers (the only ones we saw) seemed incredibly overworked, running around the two separate dining sections as well as the terrace seating. Doubt I'll be back, but convenient location! One of the most American-friendly places we are at in Québec City. To some that could be a negative but let me explain before you change the channel! The service was some of the most attentive we experienced (many Québécois restaurants have a decidedly more relaxed take on service compared to the typical American restaurant), they all spoke very good English (also not as common as you might think amongst Québécois), and they have English on the menu (this is pretty common). We also overheard one of the only English conversations the entire time we were in Quebec here. Besides the device the food was very good! The best French onion soup I've eaten anywhere and a great steak! Mixed drinks were also top notch. Atmosphere was very dimly lit but nice. No sign of Frodo anywhere though. There's something special about Le Hobbit, and it might just be one of the best things to happen to you in Quebec City if you eat at this restaurant. Our dinner at The Hobbit was one of, if not, the front runner, of impeccable French cuisine we've ever experienced. Once you step into the restaurant, the rustic decor and the charm of the staff was felt throughout the entire night. Dishes were explained, water was poured consistently, and the overall ambience equates to a nice and relaxing Parisian dinner. Moving onto the food, we ordered a selection of charcuteries, as well as their appetizer of the day, sweetbreads. The charcuteries were paired nicely with the selection of cheeses offered, and also surprisingly inexpensive. The sweetbreads with the wild rice was delicious as well, with just the right sauce consistency, such that the sweetbread's own flavours stand out. Clearly the usage of sous-vide cooking for the sweetbreads stay true to it's technique, and the results it produces. Onto the main dish, which was a roasted duck with root vegetables, gravy and mash with a slice of foie gras. Our other dishes were the pan seared elk and medallion of fillet minion with vegetables. The protein was cooked very precisely to our desired temperature, but what stood out was the gravy that came with the dishes. The flavours were incredibly deep and savoury, without it being too cloy. It was definitely one of the best flavours I've had. Impeccable service, relaxing atmosphere, sensational food techniques, and price reasonably. The bowls of cafe au lait are one of my favorite things about Quebec City! Plus, you get a free re-fill (according to JH, maybe I should fact check that though). Stumbled upon the little gem while cruising thru Quebec City on business. No reservation, is sat at the bar. The bar tender was awesome, gave me a great recommendation, it complemented my starter and wine. The French onion soup is to die for. My son and I ate there last night. It was very disappointing, for the most part. Our experience lasted practically three hours, which was pretty ridiculous. We saw other people arrive after us and receive their food sooner. We had the oyster appetizer and the liver one, and they were tiny and not very good. However, the caviar absolutely delicious, even though you get a little more than a swallow. The meatballs are not bad, but the halibut was amazing. For dessert, I had a delicious type of pudding or custard. The bill was over $225 and definitely not worth the experience. I wanted to leave right away and should had.I ordered the following: - Beef shoulder steak Whisky and pepper sauce, spring mix salad, cider vinaigrette and French fries. -- For a dish that costs $29.00 and being beef shoulder, you expect a big generous good meat, right? WRONG. The dish comes with a tiny little 4oz (max.) badly seasoned/cooked meat. The spring mix salad is probably 1/3 cup of spring mix with HALF of a cherry tomato (yes. Half.). The French fries were slightly burned and very soft (??). Also, when I did not tip the waiter 15%, she complained. We searched on Yelp for an upscale dinner during our visit to Quebec and this place showed up. Seemed to hit all the right notes so we decided to give it a try. I'm glad we made the small walk out of Old Quebec to eat here - we really enjoyed the experience. We had to wait a small amount of time because we didn't have a reservation - no biggie, that's our issue. We ended up being seated where, I believe, a canceled reservation was to go - right beside the window at a nice table. Service was great - our bilingual server was very helpful with the menu and explaining a few things. He was always available when we needed him as well. Our food was quite tasty. The French Onion Soups were good, although not the best we've had. I had the steak which came with a cheese sauce and mashed potatoes and my friend tried a different meat dish. Both were high quality and yummy. Overall - we enjoyed this place and it filled the desire of which we were looking for. This restaurant is in a prime location, unfortunately that's all it has going for them. Like most restaurants on Rue St Jean, most are not air conditioned. I feel that this was a down side to this restaurant, or at least on my visit - they decided to not turn it on. I think for a restaurant with their price points, they should at least offer air conditioning. Clearly, while dining you could see the humidity build, and ice water was melting faster than you can drink from it; furthermore, the wait staff was sweating profusely while serving food - thats so grosss! I had the beef cheek and gnocchi. Beef cheeks were good but needed more seasoning. Gnocchi was not light and pillowy. They were heavy and thick. My boyfriend had the burger. Hubby and I both ordered from the set daily lunch menu, which included a starter and coffee for around $17-20. To start was the trout tartare (+$1.25 supplement), which was delightful and displayed excellent knife work with its brunoise of mango and fresh dill. I couldn't put my finger on an Indian spice used -- cardamom? Fenugreek? In any case, it was delicious and served with plentiful baguette toasts and fresh bread with delicious butter. The rest of the meal fell a little flat. I ordered the vegetable Israeli couscous with pickled cruciferous vegetable salad. This turned out to be COLD curry-spiced couscous tossed with almonds and pistachios and faintly pickled cauliflower and broccoli spears. Decent but kinda meh and lacked salt. Hubby had avocado-stuffed chicken breast over rice pilaf with tiny shrimp and a few carrots. The chicken was a bit overcooked and dried out. Coffee was good. First the good news. The French Onion soup was good and that's all I can. This is my first time writing a bad review and I hope it's the last time I have too. Don't get me wrong, I have had bad food before but never felt I needed to publicize it like I do now. The drinks of vodka on the rocks was a small pour, in other words, a poor pour. I ordered the flank steak and received what felt like the hoof. It was the toughest and the hardest steak, to my recollection I have ever had. My girlfriend had the fish of the day and said it was tasteless. But the most disturbing thing was the service. Because I ordered the soup the waitress said is why we waited so long for the main course. Maybe so, but the wait, in my opinion, was way too long(25 minutes after the appetizer).
