Inside the theater, the seats were ok, but you can't expect extra comfort since I'm sure they can only do so much to improve due to its historic status. The nice amenities, decent gym and friendly staff are what creates the environment for a pleasant experience. Two of these were met and the friendly staff, was mostly there. . .but one sour apple truly changed the course of our stay. Even my wife, who worked once upon a time in hospitality at Kiawah Resort, was started by the interactions from The Loutrel Hotel staff member. Long story short. The daily complimentary breakfast was served. I accidentally went to place the granola lid on the yogurt, my wife told me that was the wrong lid and I went to correct. From across the room the breakfast attendant yelled, "sir that doesn't go there." Startled, I immediately removed it and placed it accordingly. I laughed it off. Moments later I went to sit my breakfast down where my drink was located. Same attendant, "you're not even sitting at the right table with your wife." Again, my error, but don't call me out twice in one morning. It's a small lobby, so many staff members overheard the interaction. Nothing was done by other management. The next morning, I walked down to look at breakfast. I saw the same attendant and said, good morning. She looked at me but wasn't pleasant in her response. Unlike the rest of her colleagues at the restaurant who are polite and kind, the same customer service I expect and provide to my customers. Breakfast offered salmon with some type of eggs or shellfish. I can't eat shellfish, allergic. So, I went to grab a biscuit at a local coffee shop and a coffee. We came back to the hotel and sat our food down. The same rude attendant came over, nudged my wife in her back and said, "you can't have this here, cross contamination." So, I left. Allowed my wife to eat her yogurt in the area. Funny enough, my wife asked where the utensils were, because every table had them. Same attendant rudely, pointed to another table for her to get them. I should have just sat down and ate my food as I didn't see any signs for "no outside food." Either way, stay somewhere else. It's unfortunate that a hotel like this allows such rudeness from a staff member. I did report this to the manager, and online but was met with more passivity. Comped two nights of valet. Honestly, it wasn't enough. I would never stay here again and it ended the trip on such a sour note.

I was hoping for sweeping views of Charleston but the scenery didn't quite live up to my expectations. One thing to note is that the nearby stables for Old South Carriage Company are close enough that you'll occasionally catch... well... the aromas drifting through the air. Not exactly what I was hoping to pair with my cocktail. Overall, I'm glad we stopped in for a drink, but I don't think it's a place I'd go out of my way to visit again. There are simply too many other rooftop bars and cocktail spots in Charleston I'd be more inclined to try in the future.

It used to look like you were stepping back into the parlor of one of the houses on the battery, including earthquake bolts from the 1800's in some of the rooms. Some of the guest rooms had canopy beds and all were quite romantic. I am southern and it was the epitome of old South beauty, grace and charm. It had a parlor like room off of the lobby where visitors sat, like they would have in olden days and the hotel served wine, cheese, crackers and grapes etc, and cookies at night. Guests used to sit and chat, play checkers and just relax. They now give out wine and later at night, they still have tasty cookies, but no one eats, drinks or really sits in the lobby because it is filled with some awful perfume or scent. Now the hotel looks like it belongs in Vegas. Red and black lacquer everywhere, in the lobby and rooms, the ladies room in the lobby is lit by red light bulbs, like a house of ill repute-see my photos. For some reason a designer seems to think this is a French look, but I think the French would be appalled. The French have beautiful understated tastes, think Christian Dior. I assure you, this is not what the French quarter of Charleston would have ever looked like. I sent some photos of the room and the lobby to a friend and she said that it looked like we were in a Disney hotel. She expected Mickey or Minnie to step out any moment. After that comment, that's all I could see -even the lobby floor and some fabrics in the furniture look like Alice and the white rabbit could show up. On top of that, if The Vendue management sees this review, please, please, please stop pumping that scent into the lobby. It's painful to just walk through to the elevator. All this said, the staff is wonderful. They're friendly, helpful and they must watch a video feed of the lobby because the minute you stop in the lobby they pop out from somewhere. There is no front desk. I'm glad for them, I would hate to have to spend my day in a lobby that was so heavily scented. I usually like scents, but this one burned my nose. I'd give the staff 5 stars and the look of the hotel one star since it is Charleston, since people come to Charleston for the southern beauty and charm. We think we'll look for a more Charleston charm-like place when we visit Charleston and save the red and black for our Disney visits and the lacquer for Vegas trips. If you are from other regions or countries, please don't think this look represents anything of Southern beauty or charm. It does not.

Every single person I interacted with was friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. You can tell the staff genuinely cares about making guests feel at home. My room was spotless, and one of my favorite things about the hotel was all of the artwork. There are unique pieces displayed throughout the property, and I thought it was really cool that you can actually purchase them if something catches your eye. My room happened to be French Bulldog themed, which I loved because it immediately reminded me of my best friend, who's obsessed with French Bulldogs. Another thoughtful touch was that every morning they left a small bag of pastries and fruit outside my door. It was such a nice surprise to wake up to each day. I'm also someone who always keeps the "Do Not Disturb" sign on because I usually don't want housekeeping coming into my room. Instead of assuming, they texted me each day to confirm that I didn't need anything or want my room serviced. I really appreciated that they checked in without being intrusive. The location is excellent, the rates were very reasonable for what you get, and the overall experience exceeded my expectations. I wouldn't hesitate to stay at The Vendue again the next time I'm in Charleston.

We then got to watch and learn as Brett started the dinner. Members of our group helped as we moved from course to course. Once dinner was ready, we moved to the upstairs rooftop patio where we had a singer waiting for us. We had a wine pairing with each dish and Brett explained the wine and food each time. To start, we had a watermelon, tomato and feta salad with a nice vinaigrette. For our entrée, we had chateaubriand with mashed potatoes and asparagus. For dessert, we had a berry compote panna cotta. Everything was delicious. The beef was super tender, creamy mashed potatoes. Loved the panna cotta. Smooth and creamy. Definitely a wonderful night with great food and great company.
