This is one of the best gluten free bakeries I've visited in the world. Great hours and open every day. You can dine in or get your items to go. Indoor seating is limited and can get a little busy on the weekends. I just spent the last week in Montreal and visited 4 times. Croissants, pain au chocolates, milles feuilles, tarts, cakes, madeleines, oh my! I tasted so many things and as I sit here in the airport I am eating my final treat, a croissant sandwich with smoked salmon and a variety of fixings. When I find really good food I often forget to take pictures because of how fixated I am on enjoying it. This is one of those times. No pictures, only memories. We visited 2 locations as 2 of us cannot tolerate wheat and we haven't had croissants (in 16 years and never ever) so having fully GF and wheat free croissants and other pastries and all tasting like real ones was a treat. We tried this bakery/cafe this morning and we were blown away. My husband has celiac and we are always on the hunt for gluten free food when we travel. The almond croissants were amazing, including for me who eats baked goods that aren't gluten free. And the price was so low, around $5 for a HUGE croissant. The extra bonus is that the cafe sells frozen croissants and phyllo dough. We bought plenty to bring to our home in NH. While visiting Montreal this week and staying in the Plateau Mont Royal area, my wife and I have gone out everyday walking to different areas of town. After enjoying the pedestrian-friendly Ave. Mont-Royal, we decided to walk up Saint-Denis to the pedestrian-friendly area of Rue De Castelnau Street east from Saint-Denis to De Gaspé. It was a long walk for us, but we were soon rewarded because almost as soon as we turned the corner onto Rue De Castelnau, we came across Boulangerie Le Marquis, with a sign out front stating that it was gluten-free. And since my wife has Celiac Disease, that sign was like a beacon of sunshine in an otherwise dreary, rainy morning. And it even got better as we learned that everything in the bakery was gluten-free, including not only all the pastries, but the wraps and other items as well. And as a vegan, I was also pleased to see several delicious-looking vegan pastries as well. The only downsides to the boulangerie if you are planning to dine in, are that they only have seating for two near the window, and they don't serve coffee. On the bright side however, we were told that we could buy a cup of coffee at the cafe next door, and then bring it back and drink it here while enjoying the gluten-free pastries. And that is exactly what we did. My wife ordered a gluten-free almond croissant ($5.25) and I selected a vegan almond and pear tarte ($6.49). And since it, too, was of course gluten-free, my wife was able to taste some of it as well. Both items were so delicious that, as soon as we finished metaphorically licking our plates, my wife ordered a couple of items to take back to our apartment to enjoy later. This time she selected an eggplant wrap ($11.99) and an almond and chocolate croissant (5.49). She also made plans to return just before our trip back to Savannah, so that she can enjoy some of the delicious items once we are back home. She has pronounced this the best gluten-free bakery she has ever been to. read more

My wife loves this place because it is hands down the best Gluten-Free bakery she has ever encountered. I don't care about gluten, but she does which means I love this place too. The bread is great, soft and fresh... just like real bread but the kicker is the croissants... I swear if you held a taste test between these and their gluten filled counterparts you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. If you are celiac and craving that amazing crusty crunchy yet soft in the center croissant... IT EXISTS. You know that song "and I would drive hundred 500 miles, and I will drive 500 more". Yeah. That's how I feel about these. Seriously. (Well... I sort of did drive a few hundred miles. Cross a country border, got tested, stayed at a hotel... FOR THIS CROISSANT.) I seriously thought I was dreaming when I had it. In the almond tarts. And the quiche. And the pastries. And the keto hazelnut cakes. I think I seriously died and gone to celiac heaven here. Yes, it does definitely take an effort to get here, but it's so worth it. It was quite hilarious when I cross the border back to the US, and the border patrol asked what I was carrying. We popped in here for pastries our first monring in Montreal. It smelled WONDERFUL. We had yet to get any real Canadian cash so all we had was a bunch of coins given to us from friends who had been to Canada and weren't returning any time soon and credit, but this is cash only place. The gentlemen behind the counter was very patient with us and worked with us and our broken French and his broken English to understand what we could afford with our coins. We wound up with an apple turnover and a strawberry apple pastry. The latter was best but they were both amazing. Apple turnovers are my mom's favorite so I've had many growing up and this was the best one I've ever had. Worth a stop for sure. Side note: We later discovered the is am ATM on this same street just a block or two (walking away from St-Denis) on the left. I forgot to go back for to-go crossiants, and I regret that now. My partner and I walked by this place completely randomly. But once there we had to check it out: we walked in around 2pm, shared a little pizza there and walked out with a quiche, a financier, an almond croissant and a mini tart! If you have issues with gluten, you are gonna love it here. They have everything you've been missing out on: pizza, quiche, opera, tart, financier, almond croissant... And, what matters most: everything is really tasty compared to all glutenfree baked goods I've tried before. There is limited sitting space though; so perhaps not ideal/kinda risky for a sit-down meal. I had a taste of about 4 or 5 different items from this gluten-free bakery. Everything was delicious. A white chocolate and nut covered cakey pastry, a baguette, potato chips, a chocolate cake, and some other pastry I don't remember. The desserts were amazing. Tasted like a normal fantastic dessert. The chips were... well... chips. And the baguette was pretty good, but not like normal bread. It almost seemed gritty. But for gluten-free, it was good enough. I was so beyond happy to find this place and on top of it the pastries were AMAZING!!!! The girl that helped us was so sweet and helpful. Even when her card machine wouldn't take our card she was so apologetic and showed us where to get cash. Only downside, bough the cake at 1pm for an 8pm dinner and at 9:30pm it was still frozen. The pears inside were chunks of ice. The chocolate filling was delightful. I had marqued this place to try for my short visit to Montréal. Although not gluten intolerant, I find it better to avoid it for digestive reasons. Coming from the New York area, it is hard to find good gluten free pastries. I tried a croissant and a pain au chocolat. They were very good, but a tad oilier than the regular version. Otherwise, they tasted delicious, were flaky, and had the same appearance as a regular one! I also got some lady fingers in a little cute package. They were tasty, light, and I enjoyed them the next 2 days with tea. Their pastries looked very appetizing and beautiful. Gluten free bakery from HEAVEN! Now I'm not actually 100% gluten intolerant but I do enjoy baked goods of all varieties and every now and then I do a cleanse or give my body a break from all sorts of things. Before it became a gluten free bakery (a few years back) I used to enjoy the little fluffy on the inside crispy on the outside Portuguese rolls they sold for .40 a piece amongst other delights. With a new schmantzy French bakery a few doors over and my lessening of gluten/baked goods intake I walked past Le Marquis many a time without popping in to see their new line of goods. WELL I'm VERY VERY happy that I went in today on a whim. They have a brilliant selection of finely made gluten free baked goods. The baker gave me a sample of the quinoa bread that was absolutely perfect (and recommended by a woman in front of me who was stocking up on almond madeleines, quinoa bread and other GF sundries). The bread contains: Organic quinoa flour, organic flax flour, egg white, a touch of molasses, apple vinegar and a few other ingredients and is absolutely fluffy on the inside with a crispy brown crust on the outside. It may look dense and ultra hippy but I assure you with a little butter, compote or what-have-you = bliss. At $6.95 / loaf (they also have sunflower bread, cranberry bread and millet) it doesn't come "cheap" but is well worth it as it would be difficult to replicate this at home. As I was reeling over the bread sample, the baker fetched me a little sliver of melt-in-your-mouth GF dark chocolate brownie (focus on chocolate - not overly sweet) that was also perfect. At $3.95 it seemed a little steep for a brownie but after sampling it worth every penny. I highly recommend this understated bakery and shop (they carry a line of Gogo Quinoa products amongst many others). They have truly honed their recipes and anyone who only eats GF or wants to try something different should head to Le Marquis. **I just removed a star from my review due to the inconsistency of the chocolate brownie. I have been back 3 times since my initial visit to buy said brownie and they either didn't make any that day or had 'blondies' to sell instead. this place is ridiculous. an absolute paradise for folks who avoid gluten. They have two pastry cases: one is gluten-free/dairy-free, and the other is gluten-free. Then they have baguettes, bagels, sliced bread. And THEN they have prepared foods: sandwiches, pizzas, quiches, cold salads. Oh and as a bonus, they have some grocery items -- all certified gluten-free. Are you craving an eclair? mille-feuille? chocolate mousse cake? key lime pie?? they have every pastry a "normal" french bakery would have. TIP: Go early in the day! My girlfriend is gluten intolerant (genuinely so; she swells up like a balloon if she has just a tiny bit), and thankfully enough this bakery nearby has the best looking and tasting gluten-free desserts I've ever tried.
