Visiting France for the past 5 days we have had nothing but great experiences. Being vegan for the past 1.5 years we love and appreciate all vegan friendly restaurants. We made a reservation with Le Potager and we're told on the phone that we had a time frame reserved of 730-9pm. We arrived at 7:50pm to the Restaurant and we're told to leave that we could not be seated. The guy turned us away and told us we could not sit. WE MADE A RESERVATION for 7:30-9PM!!! Not to mention there were 2 open tables there until 9pm!!! Maybe discrimination towards us? Not sure. Terrible service and people here. Not acceptable. Will never come back here nor reccomend. read more

I mean, Paris should have more vegan places and they don't... finally a place that serves french dishes. The food here is absolutely, completely delicious. Why no five star you say? Because: a) it was WAY too hot in the restaurant; it made me almost not want my scrumptious vegetarian onion soup, and it wasn't a particularly hot day. b) the tables are SO close together that you have to move yours to let someone out, and I did NOT enjoy the seriously annoying whiny-whine complainy-complain American family at the next table where even the kids seemed unable to put up with the mom. This was true in all of Paris, but exaggeratedly so here (the close proximity, not the annoying Americans, though we did have some experience with them too) and combined with the heat it didn't make for the best experience and definitely detracted from my food enjoyment. Owners Peter & Stefan, who is also the head chef, have done a really nice job with Le Potager du Marais. I searched a couple of weeks in vain for a bio (organic) restaurant in Paris and finally found this one just a hop and skip from where I lived on Rue Saint Martin. They had just opened this location but Stefan said they had another place across town. Maybe it was that, or just the fact that the style was far different from what I'm used to, but nothing seemed to taste "there". Most items got close but fell shy of the quality I'm used to in vegan restaurants. I had the Soupe a l'oignon, to start, with gluten-free bread crouton that Stefan said was made of chestnut flour. I paused to jot a note or two and when I took up my spoon not two minutes later, the whole bowl had turned into sludge with a few sad onions sitting at the bottom. l couldn't finish it. I had so wanted to like it, too, but the gluten free bread was bitter, like nuts can be if you eat the skins - that kind of bitter. The salad was the same salad you get all over Paris, only with no ham. The chevre baked onto croutons was lovely but for the bitter taste of the bread. The main course of tofu 'goulash' on quinoa was the best item and though it could have benefitted from more assertive spicing, was quite passable. I had the chocolate decadence 'cake' dessert with almond-milk creme anglaise and a cappucino made with hazelnut milk for dessert. Neither of them quite worked. The chocolate taste was lovely, but the creme was starchy tasting more than vanilla-y. And I wanted real cream in my coffee, the nut milks really don't improve the taste. I loved the fact that these two guys were really trying to put it out there, and that they're being creative in their menu options. Also that they've got the balls to open shop in what feels like a glorified boxcar (as others have mentioned, it's beyond tight accomodations) and ram home the vegan agenda while they're at it. Let Potager du Marais is an excellent place to pass the time sitting at a sidewalk table with a drink and maybe a pastry. I'd like to come back in a year and be able to give them a more generous review. Keep it up guys, you've almost got it! Mad props for originality and gutsiness. read more

This was one of our favorite vegetarian restaurants in Paris. Merci for the Yelp reviews as this helped us locate the restaurant. We both started off with the soupe à l'oignon and were so appreciative. It is unusual we get to enjoy our favorite soup as the broth is rarely vegetarian. It was so well worth it! My partner ordered the Bourguignon de seitan and loved it. I ordered the Roulé de lupin à la florentine et aux champignons and also enjoyed. My husband and I were in Paris for a couple of days and it's actually ironic to us that a city known to food lovers is not very vegetarian friendly. Unfortunately no fois gras for me. We made a special trip out here and it was definitely not near our hotel, but were just looking for a place that we knew we wouldn't have a problem with ordering anything on the menu(also we wanted to try something that was not necessarily only catering to tourists). I used reviews on happycow.net(which I often use when we are abroad). My husband and I both went with the prix fixe menu and our soups were great. My husband enjoyed his quinoa burger. Dessert on the other hand was practically inedible. I ordered the carrot flan which was definitely a wrong choice. I took one bite and called the waiter over to see if they could take it back(Unfortunately, " when in Rome"...it's not customary in France as it in the US to make the diner happy...it was obvious that it was lacking something but the waiter said there was nothing he could do). I ended up just sharing my husband's dessert with him, which was plenty. The other dishes weren't memorable(or lacked flavor, spice...). Overall, I gave the place 3 stars because though the waiter wasn't able to take back the flan and replace it with something, he was friendly. Also the atmosphere was much needed. It turns out that being a vegetarian in Paris is no longer unheard of. The organic movement is here, too, although one might rightly point out that France has always been famous for its fresh, regional food (I think they invented the concept of "local" - we've just adopted it). Le Potager is a totally vegetarian, organic café near the Pompidou Center in the Marais district of Paris (which might explain why most of the clientele seemed to be native English speakers and/or tourists). Sitting right next to an organic food shop, it is small and unpretentious and its food mirrors the décor. We had the set menu and started with the soup of the day and a green salad. The soup was warming and tasty, although it succumbed to the classic "throw a bunch of things together and then blend it" vegetarian soup curse where you can't really pick out any specific flavours. Still, it was well seasoned and yummy. The green salad was the disappointment of the evening. Literally some lettuce leaves, undressed, on a plate (they give you oil, vinegar and some nutritional yeast to dress the salad yourself). My advice is to skip the green salad and go for something more interesting. Our mains were delicious. I had a quinoa-based pan-fried patty, served with a terrific broccoli and hazelnut puree and a side salad (this time with shredded beets and carrots and other veggies included). My husband had a stick-to-your-ribs chili with brown rice that was simple, but filling and tasty. Dessert was even better. Their vegan chocolate mousse is dense, dark and unbelievably good. It's so rich that you'd expect it to be filled with cream, but it's dairy-free and lighter than it seems. Prices are reasonable (25 euro/person for the set menu) and not much heftier than most restaurants. Vegetarian score: 10/10. With everything vegan, how could it be otherwise? read more

To the surprise of literally anyone who has met me and my baby bro, he has become the more high maintenance eater of the two of us...so when he recommended PdM, I suspected that it was going to be tasty - but given that the salads we'd been served thus far were anemic at best, limp at worst, my enthusiasm was guarded. And while it's no hippy-dippy lovefest like Life Alive, it's pretty tasty nosh. Started with green salads (happily ample), buckwheat crepes (massive for a starter), French onion soup, and the soup of the day - all were happily consumed - and then moved onto quinoa burgers and the "eggplant surprise" - all came with mashed potatoes, ratatouille, and ... pears, which was weird, but overall, pleasant, flavorful, and surprisingly hearty vegan twists on traditionalish French food. If you're averse to gluten, they make it easy to avoid gliadin-goodness, but if you're nut free, it might be more of a challenge, though do-able. Also, don't make the mistake that we did, which was assume that as it's a vegan place in Paris, it is going to be at best half full of American trustafarians finishing up a year abroad from Oberlin in Paris - make a reservation - there are no more than twelve tables in the place, and in the two hours we were there, it was consistently bustling. Starters are around €10-12 , I think entrees are €16-20. Desserts are worth the splurge, and ring in around €8.5. If you want to get your fiber on, or even just take a break from endlessly bland steak frites, it's a good, casual spot where even a dedicated carnivore will be happily satiated. read more

The food here made me want to cry. If you are vegan, put this on your bucket list. Having been vegan for 19 years, I had never had French cuisine. So I never understood what all of the fuss was about. This is really just as well since I would have been missing out, but at least I didn't know what I was missing out on. Now I know. I have simply never tasted anything like this before. I have no idea how food that appears to be so simple could taste so delicious. More than anything, this restaurant gave me an appreciation for French culture that I did not have before. I live in New York City, and what was really sad was how none of the vegan restaurants there can even begin to compare with this. If this restaurant were in NYC, it would be packed constantly. I have since come to learn that there is a French restaurant in NYC that has a vegan menu. It is true what most reviewers say about the maître-d essentially giving you a time limit (and that not being a very romantic affair), but it's usually a reasonable amount of time given how small the restaurant it. That being said the staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. Generally the food tends to take a vegan and sometimes gluten free twist of traditional french classics. And when ordering, I would recommend leaning more towards the traditionally french plates rather than anything else. I will say...in the entrees (appetizers), the potato is really just a baked potato with olive tapenade (albeit a really good homemade one). However, the seaweed tart was really good. The dessert, which was the chocolate fondant, was just unbelievably dense and delicious. I'd go here again. read more

It's okay, maybe I am bit spoiled and am comparing this place to the fantastic veg restaurants in my hometown of Los Angeles. That's not very fair, now is it? BUT, with all that being said, it's really one of the few choices for vegetarians in Paris that want something other than crepes, bread, cheese, and "exotic" food. This is a great place for non-meat eaters -- which is quite hard to find in Paris. If you're looking for a dining experience with vegetarian items, this is the place to be. Service was extremely friendly, specifically to a boorish American such as myself. I definitely recommend stopping by. This restaurant is well located and the most important, the food is tasty and well prepared. They try to replicate traditional french dishes using meat substitutes and they are generally very successful about it. Service is friendly but somewhat interesting. When you arrive you will be asked if you have a reservation. You will probably say no, then the hostess will tell you that they are fully booked but that he can sit you if you finish your meal in less than 2 hours. You will say yes and be very happy. The odd thing will be that he will say exactly the same to every single party arriving to the restaurant either in French or English. I'm just wondering, if the restaurant is full with people who didn't reserve, where is everyone who reserved going to sit? There is another pattern that I observed. If you are non-European they may forget to put bread in your table. For some reason they think we can eat without bread and we won't be offended as most European would. So you should ask for it, since French food (even meatless) should be eaten with bread. read more

My favorite restaurant in Paris. The food here is simple and fresh, but so flavorful and interesting. Classic French cuisine made vegan. On the pricier side, but worth every penny. Impressive wine list with some really nice local choices. I like that you can order wine in 5 different sizes. The service here is always warm and welcoming, and knowledgeable of the menu. Deceived by the good reviews I tried this place today. At ~euro 25 per person this place is not cheap and I expected better. The dishes looked beautiful but lacked flavour and texture. We ordered the French onion soup which was probably the ok dish , trust me whole foods has much better vegan / vegetarian soups. Worst vegetarian food in Paris. Actually, the worst vegetarian food I've ever had. We ate here on the first night of our trip and strongly disliked the food- we only ate it because we were starving. We had the stir fry and artichoke dip. The 4/5 star rating is deceiving. I was nervous about other dining experiences in Paris after this but found that all the other vegetarian restaurants were amazing. For as many appetizers/starters that they have that rely on bread to accompany them, I was shocked how horrible their choice in bread was. I mean, this is Paris for crying out loud.... there are bakeries everywhere that had bread 100x better. By far the worst meal we had in Paris, and three of four of us were vegetarian. The mushroom pâté was okay, but overall pretty bland and not quite creamy enough. The soup was fine but really nothing remarkable. We ordered the seitan bourgogne, hazelnut veggie tarte, goulash, and quinoa burger with mushroom sauce. The burger was the only main we enjoyed, as the others were over-salted, lacked flavor, or just plain tasted bad. 1/4...Not such a good success rate. The carrot flan (though perhaps not too surprising for a vegan flan) was pretty dreadful. A vegetarian's boeuf bourguignon dream come true :-D The mock boeuf was made of seitan and my carnivore husband was surprised that it tasted just life beef! The second dish was not as exciting- Aubergine with brown rice. The dessert was delicious- it was a soft brownie like cake made of nut flour with a custard caramel sauce. The owners are the servers and the place is a delight being right next to Pompidou! Expensive place as 2 main plat along with one dessert came to an approx. 50 euros. The portions are nice, the waitstaff is very courteous and the ambience is cozy. I had zucchini soup with fresh basil and it was good. Quite a find. Vegetarian/vegan fare is difficult to come by in Europe and this place makes an excellent effort and succeeds impeccably. I had the Eggplant Surprise with mashed potatoes. The menu description was lacking and I wasn't sure what to expect, but the dish came out looking like a work of art and was delicious to the last bite. The eggplant slices were rolled up with sun-dried tomato and potato and the mashed potatoes were served topped with freshly fried onion strings. Perfect with a glass of Bordeaux. I also had the fennel soup as a first course and that was quite tasty as well. A bit on the expensive side, but the server was kind and indulgent of my limited French ability, so I have no complaints. I was so impressed that I tried to return the following evening only to find out that they are closed Monday night. All in all, worth the money. Possibly even worth a trip to Paris. read more

BAD EXPERIENCE! I'm a vegan food blogger excited to review this place in Paris. Our rice from the stew dish came out overcooked & we asked the male Indian server to please change it out. He rudely snatched the plate from us even though we said we wanted to keep the plate & just get a fresh new side of rice & he gave us the biggest attitude making us feel so uncomfortable. He also took our fork so when we asked him for a fork he threw it on the table from a distance & walked away. We couldn't believe how rude & disrespectful this employee was. We left the establishment immediately & didn't even eat we were so horrified people can treat others this way. This place is amazing. My favourite vegan restaurant I. Paris and potentially the world!!! Their french onion soup is sublime, the cheese tastes like real cheese! I also really recommend the lentil rolls. I did not like the crepe. They have an amazing berry crumble sweetened with only agave. They offer little snacks of olives and nuts. We were welcomed and treated with extreme kindness/great service throughout our meal. Great vegetarian food, with staff attentive to food allergies. This was the first vegan place I ate at in Paris and it was delicious! We went for lunch after I had just gotten off the plane. The service was great and the food was delicately seasoned and comfort food for sure. And they had great soy free options. The waitstaff was friendly. All-vegan French comfort food just a block or so from the Pompidou Centre. This place is small, maybe 10-12 tables, so we made reservations... But for the record, we were there at 8pm on a Saturday night in June, and there were still about 4-5 empty tables. Your mileage may vary. Service is friendly, the youngish guy running the place is very eager to say hello, and the portions are MASSIVE. My wife ordered the seitan Bourguignon with mashed potatoes and it was like two pounds of solid food. I had some sort of mushroom loaf thing (way tastier than I am making it sound), and with potatoes and a little side dish, it too was quite filling. We even shared the 15 Euro "cheese" salad, which was a big pile of greens with three big scrumptious slices of sun-dried tomatoes and three slices of bread with astonishingly tasty blobs of cooked vegan cheese on them, after the waitress warned us that the salad is too big as an appetizer for just one person. The place is cozy, the food is very hearty, and the wine is good. But I do think it's a bit overpriced: Our dinner was $100 for two, just for the shared (big) salad, the two main courses, and a couple half-carafes of wine. (We were too full for dessert, which is a shame, as the dessert menu looked great.) For vegans looking for a nice dinner out in Paris, I recommend Gentle Gourmet Café for the same price. But Le Potager offered us a fine meal that filled us up, that's for sure. read more

As noted, this place is not cheap so it's good for a treat. The food is varied and tasty, portions are generous. Very friendly staff. My only complaints: their new phone number and opening hours are not on their website. We had tried to make a reservation but since the phone number didn't work, when we just showed up we had to wait about an hour. It wasn't a big deal because of our particular circumstances but that's something that should be easily and quickly corrected. Also, there's a major draft that blows in on the benches near the front door. They need to seal that up. Otherwise, I'm really glad I came here and would recommend it to anyone looking for upscale organic vegetarian and vegan food in Paris. My parents are vegetarian - but I wanted to give them an experience of Parisian restaurant cooking idea. After reading reviews I went for this one, it's not particularly haute cuisine but it's I think closest when you want vegan-vegetarian offerings. Me and my parents were fascinated with what they could do with simple ingredients like aubergine, quinoa and peas to create elegant dishes. The service was great, and the waiter sat down at the end to explain the concept of their cooking to my father who was curious. read more
