My uncle in Manhattan is getting older and needed some help. He was resistant and not really in the right frame of mind to look for someone. I'm in Maryland but he doesn't have any family nearby so I am the next best thing. I didn't know how to go about looking for someone. I called a couple of home care agencies but they were expensive and was not sure what we were getting for $25 to $27 an hour. When i looked online there were many different ways to go and I was a bit overwhelmed. So I went on Yelp which i periodically due for restaurants and such. I was surprised that LeanOnWe jumped at me. The reviews were strong and they were varied. At first I didn't realize that they were any different than the home care agencies. Then i realized that they weren't an agency but just a way for me to connect with someone that my uncle would end up hiring. Very clever. Since my uncle would be hiring the caregivers, it was meaningfully less expensive but would give us everything we were looking for. So I called up and told LeanOnWe what my uncle was dealing with, where he lives, and what he was looking for. They sent bios of 5 people who fit the bill, my uncle and i spoke to two of them on the phone and decided to hire one of them. It worked out great. What a creative way for us to manage this process. We would have been stuck otherwise. So far the woman we chose has been working for about three weeks and all is working well. Unfortunately -I must give them a very negative review. I have asked them numerous times to assist me in replacing a live-in caregiver who has created a very toxic environment for us. The caregiver constantly manipulates the family against each other in order to get his way. Every time I try to replace him the agency interferes and ignores my requests even though I am the one hired them and I am the one who pays the caregiver who I dislike immensely. I should not have to be a situation where I am forced to keep a caregiver that I dislike. They don't return my phone calls and they ignore my requests to get a different caregiver. Instead of working with me to replace this caregiver who has created an extremely toxic environment, the agency will go behind my back and reach out to another family member who has very little to do with the caregiving, is easily manipulated and it results in arguments about replacing the caregiver. I don't want a caregiver who is only in it for the money and who does not have patients wellbeing in mind. I constantly have to step in and make sure the patient is being cared for. I should be allowed to replace a caregiver that I have no trust in. The caregiver should not be in charge and the agency should not be in charge. Thay have made a difficult situation even more difficult by pitting family members against each other. I dislike them immensely. Be careful read more

Our experience with Lean on We was remarkable. My 96-year old mother was an Assisted Living resident when she was infected with the corona virus. LeanOnWe is not your usual Home Health Care agency. They give you access to their roster of certified, pre-screened aides, and in their gallery on line, you can read their profiles, and also see videos of each one. So you can select your own aides! Brilliant! Then you become the employer, with total control over wages and hours, etc. and LeanOnWe provides all kinds of support and help when needed. They also set you up with a payroll company so that all that stuff is relatively easy. We hired two aides to take care of my mom who is in assisted living, but cannot be left alone. I chose the aides based on the videos and profiles, and interviewed them and had them meet my mom first. When they both seemed to "click," we hired them. It has been working out great. The two aides are godsends for us, and my mother, despite her dementia, really loves them. She calls them "my angel," or "my best friend." Any rough spots we hit were smoothed by the LeanOnWe team, who were always available and very responsive. As the employer, you have full control over the situation. But the caveat is that you do have to do more and be responsible for more than you would if you used a traditional agency. A traditional agency would decide on the wages of the aides and assign the aides to you, but they would also take care of all the administrative stuff. So that's the trade-off. I certainly would recommend LeanOnWe if you like to have control over who takes care of your loved one. read more

We found a terrific care giver for my mother through this service. She was among the first three candidates we were offered. The initial service fee and daily charge may seem high but it is well worth it in terms of the time they saved us in searching for good candidates. Also they saved me a lot of time because they did all the vetting and background checks. I also appreciate that once they have helped make a successful match they are hands off. The only time they contacted me again was to find a last minute substitute for us when our care giver was sick. Although, it's doubtful we'll ever need it, I like that LeanOnWe also provides insurance. read more

I hadn't thought of going to yelp for reviews on home care but I was having trouble finding reliable care for my wife after several bad experiences. A friend suggested that I look on Yelp so I figured I'd give it a try. As I started looking through, the strong reviews for LeanOnWe shocked me so I figured I'd give them a call. From the outset, it has worked out better than I could have hoped. The owner, Betsy was courteous, knowledgeable and not pushy. I told her what was going on at home and what I thoughtht I needed. She made some scheduling suggestions that went counter to my impressions and ended up saving us considerable money. There was no charge until we hugged someone, and their inexpensive pricing is creatively structured so they no financial incentive for us to pay a higher rate or hire the caregiver for more hours than I need. She sent me several profiles of caregivers that fit the bill for us. I interviewed the one I thought best for us and decided to hire her. Wish we'd had a better experience. We tried and tried with multiple caregivers through LeanOnWe. Ended up leaving. One aide scolded my very kind and undemanding 97 year old father for being "jealous" of her time when he needed help getting off the toilet and she was doing something else. Another rode my parents' stairlifts up and down for entertainment. The last one ate nonstop, leaving crumbs around the house and ignoring my parents. We asked her to leave after she "forgot" to give them food one day. There were one or two good people in the bunch, but overall, the people we got weren't up to even a basic level of caregiving. So wish it had been different. The owners were nice, and they did try, but in the end, when we remained dissatisfied, they were unwilling to make any financial adjustment - not that we had a right to it, but it would have left a better taste in our mouths. (We went with another company and have been thrilled. On Day One, the perfect person walked in, and she's still with us after 4 years.) read more
