Even the sales are expensive toys. And, just walking in to look around was extra expensive for me. They had a toy sitting in the way of the aisle, that I didn't see as I was checking out things in the store and looking up, and kicked it hard - chipped my big toe nail really bad and hurt my toe... my brand new $75 pedicure down the drain. This toy shop has a great selection of unique and hard to find toys. The staff is helpful and provides great service. They offer free gift wrapping and we will definitely be back for all our gifts. If you're in a rush and need a gift, I would definitely suggest you call ahead of time and let the manager know what you need and in the price range that you want. My boyfriend and I were walking by one night after dinner next door and were intrigued by the scooters they had outside their door on display (window shopping works!!!) We had been looking for a scooter for his 4 y/o daughter for Christmas, so we stopped in. The seemingly small store is STUFFED with all kinds of goodies. We're talking the kind of toys you can't find at Walmart or Target... games, pillows, and little Knick knacks, scooters, and stuffed animals - a kid's dream world!! Even us adults were mesmerized by all the toys. The employees were really helpful in telling us about the scooter and letting us try it out. They were thorough and kind and were definitely patient with us as we touched a million things in the store. We ended up getting the scooter, and his daughter loved it! Would definitely recommend if you're looking for a neat toy or want to treat your kiddo. Will be returning :) read more

I hate leaving poor reviews but this is ridiculous. I came in to get some gifts for my kids. Theres not a lot of people when i walk in, i think i was 1 of 3 customers. Well the lady that manages ends up showing me a few things. So im thinking this is pretty cool, shes somewhat helpful. I end up getting some lap trays and she tells me they can customize and put my kids names on them. So i give her all our information, names, spelled them, etc etc. I pay for everything and leave without the trays because she said they will call me when they are done. Which was fine, i wasn't in a rush for them as it was about 2.5 weeks before Christmas. I end up getting a call that night that they are ready, cool. This store is a little far from where i live so it took me a few days to get back there to pick them up. Finally i make it over to the store, hoping i can run in, grab them, and run out. I also have my 2 year old son with me. We go in and i wait, forever, for some one to help me. My son is getting antsy. Finally i am able to tell a lady im just here to pick up my trays, she goes to get them and i notice my daughters name is spelled wrong. Seriously? I check the paper the lady wrote the names down on, it is spelled right on the paper. They didn't notice when they wrote it on the tray it was wrong? It's pretty obvious. My daughters name is Bailey.. no funky spelling, pretty easy. They wrote "baily"... I was so frustrated, I couldn't give that to my daughter. So i told the lady and she got rude and said they would have to see if they could fix it. She came back to me and told me the manager lady would fix it if i gave them "just a sec". Fine, i can wait "just a sec". 20 minutes later i am still waiting with my son that is getting into everything because its a freaking toy store and of course. The manager just kept ignoring me and helping her friends that where in there, disregarding every other customer that needed help. I finally got so upset i just grabbed my other tray and left. I had my husband call them to tell me to let us know when it would be fixed so we could come get it and the manager was extremely rude to him and told him it was ready. So again we go to pick it up and it looks like crap. Obviously they were upset that i wanted them to fix THEIR MISTAKE! The name looks horrible and you can tell they tried to make it look bad. So sad to take out their problems on a childs gift. I will not be back to this location. I'd rather drive all the way to memorial and go to the Learning express store in city centre! read more

Would not recommend shopping here. Instead of greeting you with "hello" or "welcome", the lady greeted us with "here, let me spray some sanitizer on your hands". I get it, you don't want covid but at least have some manners. Price not listed on many items. They ring you up secretly, prices are not displayed on payment window. No receipt given for purchase. I was being polite and said "thank you" after we paid and were about to leave, to which she responds "uh huh". Wth. Must be related to the rude cash register lady at HEB down the street who also says "uh huh" when you say thank you. My 9yo was appalled and has more manners than these folks. This place in theory would be nice. It's smaller than the big chains and has some cool stuff, although at a slightly higher price. However, the staff/owner(?) are awful. A woman followed us around the whole time in a rude way, even though I told her we were just looking around and didn't need help. I was even holding items that I planned to purchase. My toddler was not being disruptive at all. He tested a few toys that were out on the floor as if they were supposed to be played with. I was asking him which ones he wanted, which should have been a signal that we were there to buy something. (But really, who cares if we were just checking it out? Good business practice would be to allow someone to look and they will come back later if they like it.) So, having been rushed out of there like we were a bother (there was no one else in the store), we ended up buying $50 worth of stuff for valentine's day and a new baby. As we are walking out, I see a poster saying "Free personalized bucket(or tote?) with $25 purchase." There were no qualifications on the sign. They also have it on Facebook after I went back to look. I went back in and asked the lady about the deal. She said it was for purchases with a "theme." I asked if it had to be certain items. No, she said, anything in the store. So I kept politely asking about what she meant by theme. Like if it was for a special present, she said. I said it was for Valentine's day. She just stared at me. I said, I guess I just don't understand. She said, mmmhmmm. And that was that. Ok. This bugged me. I emailed the owner who took a week to respond (and answered in the same convoluted way.) I went to return the items the next day because of it, with a different clerk and asked again what the policy was. She said the same thing. So you have to buy everything for a package theme present, like I did for Valentine's day. Still not sure why we couldn't get the free 10 cent tote, but it was the principle of the thing. I certainly wasn't being rude or disruptive. Not sure why they would advertise a special if they wouldn't honor it, and not sure why they would be so rude at the get-go. There are much better independent toy stores in the Houston area that cater to their customers (who are, ultimately, the kids). Don't waste your money here. read more

I am a lover of small, privately owned businesses. I love supporting the smaller guys. But .... First, the woman who runs it (she is not the owner as she curtly informed me) is stuck up and only gives prompt and courteous service to either repeats or those she perceives as having a lot of money. I look young for my 40 year old age and was treated like an ignorant young mom who knew nothing about child development, despite my having 2 kids and an extensive background. She put down places like Target and Amazon, scoffing at my shopping there. She assured me her store was far better. (Eye roll) After all, according to her, they track purchases when they sign you up and can send you emails about special events, etc. When I was browsing a shape sorter, she remarked my son was too old for that toy. I never said I was getting it - just looked at, but geeze..."thanks" for your unsolicited opinion. Birthday came and when the wooden toy (Melissa & Doug) was opened, our toddler discovered the front of the toy was splintered. We immediately took it away and I called 2 days later (party was on Sat evening) and explained the situation. Same lady said I could bring it in and exchange it. It took about 3 weeks to get back there. We walked in and as I was trying to talk, she interrupts frequently and does not allow me to finish a sentence. When I explained who I was again, she looked at me like I was literally crazy. She then says "Do you have the receipt?" I said, do you not remember me? (And don't they track purchases?) We already spoke about this - just here to exchange, not return. She rudely told me they were out of the toy and she had to order them. I asked when it might be back and she made this face saying she was going to have look at her PO (only she didn't go look) and maybe mid Nov - no real idea she could give me. I told her that wouldn't do, so could I please have a refund. She said no. I said fine, I'll pick something else and pay the difference. She followed us back to his section (why?) and as I was trying to concentrate, she points to the same shape sorter she rudely told me my son was too old a few weeks prior for and says "Does he have a shape sorter?". I said yep...I wasn't about to get into all that. I got his toy, paid MORE money and left. Well, that toy was a bust too. Cheaply made and topples over when we barely touch it. I called her to explain and once again, she was curt, cut me off and her only solution was that I could come back to the store, unbox another toy and build it there so we could make sure it was acceptable (really?!). I said no...I just want my difference back. I'm done with your store and the now 2 toys. And she repeated, like a robot, 3x, that I could only have my difference back, which is exactly what I asked for. It was like someone had pressed the "play" button and it was stuck on a loop. I was done. I told her I should have shopped at my usual places like always because at least there, I don't have the hassle of returns, exchanges or money back. And then I ended the call. She runs this store like this because she can. She is the only one there 100% of the time. She has to answer to no one. I won't set foot in this location again. It isn't worth it.Like others have said, toys are marked far higher. There are many items you can find at Target, Wal-Mart and Amazon for much cheaper, including a Halloween necklace from the dollar store. They sold it for $5.99 and I paid $1. Same packaging. It is these kinds of reasons people are not shopping "local" or "small" anymore, sadly. Edit: This woman thinks she is funny by contacting Melissa & Doug... I know this because M&D contacted me personally about this matter (which also means she shares your contact info!), only I had to correct them. Not a pleasant experience. Terrible way to do business. I was told by a group that this store had one of the hot new toys for retail plus shipping and they were able to buy it over the phone with only $12.50 shipping to another state. So I hurried up and called the store to talk about buying one and shipping it to me. I live approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes away from their. The manager stated they were out of them and would be getting more soon. I asked if I could pay for it and they ship it to me when they get them. She said no but would take my number down and call as soon as they got them. So after waiting for a call I finally got one. Only to be disappointed when she said they have them but would be $10 more than Retail on the item which is NOT what she was selling for earlier that week. And to ship it to me would be $27. I told her no thanks and that's not a great way to do business. First trying to make money by raising your price afterwards and then trying to charge me almost $30 to ship an item in the same state less than 4 hours away. And i regularly ship on eBay and for something that weighs more than this item doesn't cost me that much to ship across the US!! Bad business practices. Don't shop here. My kids love to come to this store. They always have such fun and unique toys and games for children. Now that my daughter is getting older I still find unique items to interest a young teen. I have even found a fun gift or two for friends. My kids like the events that are planned during the year to try out items that we would never even know about. I've shopped here numerous times and have always experienced friendly, helpful service. The owner, manager and other staff are all very knowledgeable about the products, don't push certain items and really seem to want to help me find exactly what I want. I love that they have unique and educational toys that cannot be found at "big box" toy stores and that they will personalize and gift wrap purchases at no additional charge. Sometimes I have a specific item in mind and they help me find it quickly. I've also come in just looking for a present for a certain age child and they've always helped me find great gifts. This is a great store with some really cool toys and things you can't find at the big box stores. My kids really enjoy going to Learning Express and always leave happy. The only reason I gave them 4 stars instead of 5 is that the prices are a little high. There have been occasions that I've seen toys there that I've also seen at Target for a lower price. Not a HUGE difference in price and I get it because they probably don't sell the same volume as Target but, nonetheless, it still bugged me enough to knock off a star. Since I am buying for nieces and nephews its my way of helping out the busy moms that are in a hurry for gift wraping . LOL Someone complained about staff attention??? I've read a couple of reviews that complain of slightly higher prices or salespeople who follow you around. This is a boutique toy store. That means it has unique toys and a unique toy buying experience. Yes, they carry some name brands that you might find elsewhere slightly cheaper...emphasis on slightly, but you definitely get what you pay for here. At Learning Express, you have easy parking right in front of the store. When you walk in, you get that cute boutique feel which is incredibly kid friendly. They have toys out for the kids to play with. The salespeople don't simply ring up your purchases. They will talk to you and make suggestions. Now that my kids are a bit older, I sometimes forget what a 4-year-old boy might want. So, when I go to buy a gift, I love that the salespeople will walk around the store with me to give me suggestions. And I've never had salespeople follow me around if I didn't want them to. Many of the same salespeople have been there for years, which means they know their products and market very well. They also tend to remember names and faces if you pop in there more than once. And, of course, they'll wrap your gift for free. Kids can make a "registry" for their birthday, so you are ensured of bringing a gift they really want. They put together cute buckets for special holidays like Halloween, Valentine's Day and Easter. So, yes, you might be able to find that set of Legos a dollar or two cheaper somewhere else. But there's no chance you'll get the Learning Express personal service or atmosphere at those bigger stores....If you prefer to shop at boutique clothing stores to get that personal attention and unique look, you'll love shopping at this toy store as well. read more

This place is amazing! Every time I walk in, I'm greeted with smiles and all kinds of help! I went with my two toddlers once and one of the ladies there actually walked around with my 4 year old showing him how each toy worked that he had questions on. She offered to personalize (for free) the bike my youngest bought and even wrote my oldest sons name on the Legos he bought so he would feel special as well. We bought a set of frogs from them once and had issues with one of the frogs- (aggression towards the smaller one) they gladly offered to return him and exchange for a new one. Today (months later) my frog passed away :( . I called the store to see what to do and they offered to come in and replace him. Hands down- best customer service I've ever received! I refer all my girlfriends to this shop! Thank you, Ladies! It is clear that you guys LOVE your "job" ! It's obvious they have a passion for what they do there- not just there to "work"!
